With the news that Samgoody is going under, I stopped by at a samgoody and found the ds is dropping in price as well. I will wait til it hits about 30-40% off before i get it as I know I probibly won't find any at 50% However with the news of the revision model coming, should I just wait anyways or just pick up the normal ds at the discounted price?

Knowing Nintendo as one of the masters of marketing, there will probably be a plethora of revisions to the DS when it's all said and done.:bomb: Just look at all the phases the GB and GBA have gone through. So if you have the patience to wait for a better revision of the DS, you can save yourself some money, instead of trading your old DS for the "new" DS whenever that may be.

At least wait for the DS Lite to release. But if you can get the original DS at 50% off, then by all means take it:D. There are a lot of good games out for the DS, more so than the PSP (in my opinion). However, it's entirely up to you. Just ask yourself, if you really need those "revisions" done to the DS at all.

Yea after seeing Nintendo's "revisions" to the gameboy, then to the GBA, then to SP, now the DS, way too much for my taste..but 40-50% off a PSP doesn't look too bad right? :P

The only game i would get for the DS would be that castlevania game :)

thanks

Ima just going to keep my silver DS and spend the 50-60 bucks I would have had to spend to trade up to a Lite on 2-3 good games for the DS, like Metroid, Tetris, and Mario. I just can't justify getting the lite when it just doesn't add any functionality at all, and I'm wary of those new screens Nintendo is using because they have poor refresh rate...

Also, the DS's current screen is a backlit transflective screen...with a straight bright source of natural light its playable without the backlight on...thats no longer possible with a true backlit screen like the screens nintendo is using in all its new handhelds, so I just don't find the new screen that compelling anymore...

Wow, I have to disagree that the current DS is playable without the light on. Ever try to play it in sunlight? Can't see a darn thing.

Personally, I'd wait since the DS Lite will have better battery life at lower brightness settings and equal battery life at the brightest level.

I just want the new DS for better ergonomics... the higher button placement, new D-pad, longer stylus and brightness control make it more appealing to me. Also, if anyone has seen the extra nice screen on the Micro/newer SPs, you'll know how amazing some games look due to the high contrast ratio, natural brightness, and deep colors.

But it's not small expendature. I think I'll just sell my DS and use my brothers if there's a game I really want to play. I'm waiting on price drops for most games anyway or can't find them (Phoenix Wright & Lost in Blue).

you might as well wait until you can hold both in your hands, you might prefer one over the other. personally, i like the way the ds feels, i can pull the stylus out very easily so i like where it is, and i like the size of it too, it fits my hands nice. i might get a ds lite, but not until ive played around with one to make sure i like the way it feels more.

I would say unless there's some feature of the DS Lite that you must have (i.e. brighter screen, what have you), you might as well get the current DS. It seems that the DS Lite will be at least if not more expensive than the current DS. And it might turn out as stated above that you will prefer the current model over the Lite, for any number of reasons. I've always been amused by the people that say they're going to wait for revisions, because if that's your goal, you'll never get it. I said it a while ago: if you had waited for the "next" revision of the GBA, you'd probably have just gotten one a few months ago, after the system had been around for years.

As for me I will be following the advice above. Once there's a demo unit in the stores, I will see how it feels to me. I think the smaller dimensions will actually be unfortunate. The GBA SP is too small for my hands, so I tend to use the DS more; I don't think the brightness of the screen is too much of a problem. The DS Lite might have the same comfort problem.

unfortunitly i am on a time limit...some fool could buy them all up at 30% off..or even at 50% off and ebay them :| DS lite won't arrive before sam goody folds up in another month :(

See the option was clear for me this last nov-dec...I got a DS for 100 dollars w/ that Target misprint, even though the rumors around a redesign had started and I suspected a revision with the new LCD tech and a more Revolution-matching design were inevitable...but for 100 dollars, I HAD to...I had just traded in my old front-lit cobalt SP for a new backlit graphite one, only paying about 10 bucks more out of pocket (traded in a game and got some sort of bonus value)...

Then I realized that I was paying almost as much as a new DS, which was, in essence, also a GBASP, but so much more...so I returned it and somehow got a full cash refund, thanks to a kind EB clerk. Then there was the Target misprint, and I knew that was it. For 20 bucks more, I had a GBA SP and a NDS. I can live with platinum, although I if I had a graphite DS I would have absolutely zero draw towards the lite. As it is, if they eventually release a black DSL, I will be someone drawn towards it...I think lighter colors, even metallic ones, tend to distract the eye a bit...but a black system lets your eyes focus a lot more on the screens...

Anyways, to make a long useless post short(er), I got the original DS in a special circumstance for a great price, and BECAUSE of that, I really don't feel as compelled as others to get a DS Lite. If you could get the original DS for 100 bucks, I'd say get it, since the differences are mostly aesthetic. But if the best you can do is 115-120, then maybe you should wait for the redesign, hold it in your hand (as others have suggested) and then make up your mind. I guarantee you that some stores will have sales on the original DS when the lite comes out, so "get the DS now for cheap" might apply 3-5 months down the road also.

wow, i see your point.
The only games I would like to get for the DS would be Mario Kart, Castlevania and RE even if all the games are pixelated hell :(

Well yes technically the pixels are larger than the higher resolution graphics of the PSP, but I swear, if you've yet to play Mario Kart DS, the first time you play it you will completely forget any complaints you had about the DS or its capabilities...its THAT good. Its runs at a BUTTER smooth 60fps, boasts graphics better than the n64 version and in some ways successfully imitates the graphics of the gamecube version, and just has a TON of content. I really really recommend it. It's almost worth the price of admission alone. And if you like RPGs, you should really consider Mario and Luigi also.

ok i caved in..got the LAST DS for 91 bucks :) It seems to be the original release with the metroid prime hunters demo. Haven't opened it yet and it still has a 149.99 tag on it. It was there last one (they had 4 on friday). I think 30% is the best I can do since it was the last one in the store. Now need to wait for Castlevania to go on sale :)

I better take it out of my car before it freezes up lol

I wouldnt wait on Castlevanie to long. Most likely it will go out of print and be hard to find at even retail.

I'm just surprised that Nintendo put so much effort into the aesthetics of the DS Lite but made it so the GBA carts stick out a little bit... that's gonna look as ganked as a GB or GBC cart hanging out of a GBA SP...

I generally like the style of the DS Lite and think that with games like New SMB and Brain Training/Brain Age on the horizon, it'll sell tons, but I can't justify it to myself right now.

Sam Goody is going under everywhere? I thought it was just local like with the Toys R Us. Well I noticed that even after their little 20-40% off everything in the store, their prices were the same as most retailers when it came to the cds and movies. I did get an AR Duo (which turned out to be an old model that doesn't work with Animal Crossing!). I'm so glad I didn't renew that Replay card though.

yep its going under...suncoast says they are "restructuring" but you know what that means.. a sam goody at fairoaks mall, va went away in 2003 I believe without warning...one week it was there and then 3 weeks later poof gone..but of course FOM is the worse mall you will ever go to.

I say wait for the Lite, I returned mine (dead pixels) instead of exchanging cuz the current DS just isn't comfortable for long periods of play. Hoping the controls of the Lite are better.
