I'm surprised there isn't more talk about this game on here. This is an excellent platformer (probably one of the best to come out for the GBA) that deserves to be played. It's an excellent combination of quirky gameplay, interesting mechanics, puzzle solving and just fun platforming.

I'm only about six levels into it, but I'm really enjoying it. About the only bad thing I can say about it is the cart is incredibly ugly.

They could have made you touch the screen for some non-important reason and packaged this as a DS game and everyone on this board would be talking about it right now.

Well... I still just think Nintendo did a bad job letting people know this game was around. The only type of advertising I ever saw was a video on one of the Gamecube kiosks, and I did some checking around... it seems like a fun game, its just not hyped at all anywhere.

It got pretty decent reviews, too.

I'm interested, just not in a position where I can plunk down any sort of change for it right now - espically with the last few GBA games I bought all dropped to $19.99 (Mario Tennis, Gunstar Super Heroes) fairly quickly.

Price drops for portable games is a dangerous gamble. If you don't get it now, chances are it might be hard to find complete and new. Still, 35 is a bit too much for me. If it's still around at 20, then I'll get it.

I supported it and GR last week as part of a $130 tab, I might get around to it after I finish Advance Wars or FFIV that are filling both slots in my DS.

I played some of it last night and I really do like it. So far, which isn't very far in the game, it seems much more of a platformer like Mario. Perhaps when I get more into it there will be more puzzle solving.

This is a very polished game. The graphics are great. The idea, story are simple, but neat. The controls are easy and don't take a way from the game.

I don't want to rate it, but after playing the little I did, I would say this will be one of my favorite platformers, if not games ever. Right after Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3. It really is that nice. The game has it's own little charm/personality it seems.

Just my initial impressions. Doesn't seem like it is going to be that popular or in demand. If you want a copy, perhaps you should go get it now. Just in case. Best Buy that I went to still had them in back not even out on the shelves.

Yeah, I'm getting that feeling too, but I didn't want to jump that far in until I completely finish the game. This could very well be one of the best 2D platformers ever though. It feels like a lost gem from the SNES or something.

I picked it up yesterday, and let my son (who just turned 6) play it today. I was too busy today to play it myself. He really likes it but keeps getting stuck and handing it to me. There's nothing quite like getting a GBA shoved at you while you are trying to work and being asked to solve some problem in a game you haven't yet even looked at :D. All I get so far is there is a bunch of R-clicking  - he doesn't quite have a handle on clicking R, letting go, and clicking again (multiple gears?), though I think he's figuring it out. And he did beat the first boss all by himself (at least I assume there was a boss - he cleared the first stage anyway).

On a completely unrelated note - your family might just be playing too many video games when your son (my other one who is 3) tells his mother to stop singing a particular song to him in the car because he "hasn't unlocked that in Mario yet".

Maybe I'll just hold onto my credit for Metroid Prime Hunters.

I don't think so... whenever Target does that, it's not like they put up a sign that says "Drill Dozer - 19.99!" by accident. The price tags always have the name of a different game on them. Very different scenario than the infamous $99 DS catalog pricing from a while back.

Works fine in the DS Lite. At first I was worried that the rumble would make the darn Lite feel like it was going to come apart, but it's more of a mild vibration than a rumble.

It only sticks out a little farther than a GBA cartridge, so if those don't bother you, it's unlikely this will.

I finished it the other day (bought it months ago at full price) and it is an excellent game. The water level was painful but I hate water levels in platformers in general - they tend to slow down the action way too much.

After beating the game and starting the extra levels, I realize that the controls could use a little more tweaking. They definitely have an "old school" type of response. If they were as responsive as say, Super Princess Peach, I would have liked it even more.

After seeing the enthusiastic X-play review I knew I wanted this. I kept an eye out for it during the CC sale but no luck. Someday...

I hadn't noticed until reading this thread it was published by Nintendo. There must be some political reason they've put nearly no marketing behind this title. Perhaps they had an obligation to Game Freak to publish a non-Pokemon title in exchange for their continued work on the series.

They created a pretty nice site for the game but who would know it's there?

It is a nice game that could have been something really special with a little bit extra. I found that it was a bit too repetative at times. I have it and just got bored after a while goign through the same puzzles over and over again.

I think a DS version could help that. Adding the touch screen ability to it woudl be cool. Also adding a sort of multiplayer/co-op portion would be awesome. I want more variety in puzzle design though with the levels.

Very fun platformer, definitely up there with the classic 2-D side-scrollers in overall quality. I highly recommend it.

I'm digging it too like many of the rest of you.

I have a question for those of you who've put in more time with it than me: Do you eventually get a drill bit that'll cut through those steel crates? In the first few levels I've noticed some red blocks and other potential goodies that are placed behind steel crates. I couldn't figure any way around to access the goodies so I was thinking maybe you eventually unlock or acquire a stronger bit and I could come back and pick these up.

For those unlucky like me where CC has nothing to offer in the clearance sale, and BB doesn't carry squat in the GB/DS section, I saw Drill Dozer on clearance at Target for $14.98 last night.

Of course this is probably a YMMV situation.

Pretty fun, but nothing exceptional. It's a shame though that if they called this game "Mario Drillenator" it would be pushing a million copies, instead of filling up the $10 bargain bin at every major chain.

People are buying it tho, I read a gaming magazine the other day that said it had jumped into the top 10 games for last month in terms of sales numbers. It was pretty high up on the list. So better late than never and hopefully we will see Drill Dozer 2.

That was because it dropped to $10 at Best Buy. I don't know of any other GBA games at best buy that dropped in price that much. It would have to sell shittier than hell I would think. Too bad, cause it isn't.

Well at least its selling. Of course no one is gonna buy a game unless its got a recognizable movie or cartoon license, or is a sequel. Its damn near impossible to get a new ip off the ground. Hopefully everyone picking up the game for $10 will learn to give new things a chance.

I disagree with that. It feels like a Treasure game to me, and I consider that exceptional. I wish more games did.

I do think if the game had a better name (I like it now, but it sounded gimmicky and slow) and better cover art (it scared me, and doesn't really represent the game at all) it might have had more of a chance.

Mr. Driller is good for $10. It's been the same game since it came out in the arcades. nothing different in the ds other than you can drill by touching the screen.

Would you call this a "metroidvania" game? That is, do you levelup/powerup as the game goes on, gain access to new areas... is the world map all connected? I would definitely seek it out if that were the case...

Not really like a metroidvania at all. It is set up like a lot of platformers. There is a "world map" that you move through (2 stages per area). You do get upgrades but they are area specific (except for upgrades you can purchase). You can travel back to past stages and play them again, but there is no fully connected world map at all.

I picked this up last night and played it for about 1/2 an hour or so.

Not a bad game. I'm not (yet) seeing the facination with it. It was only $10 so I don't regret it. I, generally, like the 2d platformers.

I had just found the 3rd gear for the drill before I had to stop so maybe I didn't give it enough time and I'm still in training mode or something.

I would have never picked it up had it not been for this thread, though. The box cover just reminds me of the Anime/Japanese stuff which doesn't normally intrigue me. Bomberman was a little like that (I wouldn't have picked it up except I kept reading about how great it was on Usenet back in the day). Bomberman is a truly great game, though. The (current) one out for the DS is the traditional Bomberman and a great deal at ~$10 at Circuit City.

My only complaint with this game now, is that the 'hidden' levels and treasure questing is so much more fun than the main story. You can see the devs really went wild with the level design on some of these extra levels. It's too bad that level of quality didn't extend to the whole game.

Alright, just got back into this game after a long time away. Can anyone give me an idea of how many areas there are? Kind of funny how at the beginning of the thread it was being discussed if the game would drop in price or not or if it should be picked up before it was hard to find and almost a year later it's down to under $10 everywhere and even at K-Mart it doesn't sell well for $3 (though that's probably because it's tagged at $21 at the K-Mart I got it at). Once I get through my backlog of DS and GBA games I'll try out the game. I figure it's got to be worth $3

I know this is an older thread, but I had to bump it. Does anyone else believe that Drill Dozer might be one of the greatest platformers ever? I really think it is, but wanted to hear some more opinions on it.

I actually just recently finished the main game and now I am going back through all the levels to find the 31 treasures. More and more, as I replay the levels, I see the thought and creativity that went into designing this game. I love the drill dynamic. It lead to a lot of unique level design choices and never became gimmicky. Game Freak seemed to put a crazy amount of polish and effort into it and the result is (in my opinion) a classic GBA game. It is a shame that Nintendo didn't see fit to back it with some kind of marketing. I really believe that if they did, it could have taken off as a profitbale new intellectual property. I want a sequel, but I think there is very little chance this happens.

It sucks that the one time Game Freak was allowed to branch out and make something not involving Pokemon, it bombs because no one knew about it.

For me, I wouldn't put it at the VERY top of platformers, but it is excellent, and one of the better platformers in recent years.

I like too that isn't it made by the Pokemon guy? He's got Asperger's, one of the few people to go public, for whatever reason (probably because it's so new as a diagnosis, and most adults got missed).

One of my favorite GBA games that I got for $3 at Kmart's clearance. I also saw it new for $5 (after 50%-off) at Blockbuster/Gamerush. It's $9.98 at TRU, but it isn't selling well as the store here had about 7 copies. Even though I've beaten the main game, like neschamp, I'm also going back to collect the treasures I missed.

I really enjoyed it, but I can't put it among the best of the best platformers (Even though I cannot think of all that many better platformers than DD.), mostly due to the fact that all non-boss combat was trash.

Still, excellent game that deserved lots more love than it got.

I agree, the combat is basically non-combat (except for the robot dog) - you just drill through them, lest you don't have enough gears to finish the job in one drill.

I am really enjoying this game, the production values are INCREDIBLE! The art, the backgrounds, the effects, the music, the menus - all of it is really amazing. The drill mechanic gives a surprising laundry list of moves. However, my one problem with the game is that it is often too obvious how to do things. When in doubt, drill. Also, the guys that communicate with you from the home base often tell you exactly what you were thinking; however, I'll count that as old-school cred since it reminds me of a SNES game.

The game is great and unique, and the gameplay mechanics are solid. Worth the $2 purchase from Best Buy, and I am simultaneously happy (for me) and sad (for Game Freak) that it was the only game left unbought at Best Buy that was a part of the recent clearance.

I would put it below most Mario games and the Genesis Sonic games (No 3D, no CD). But not much below them. I have to imagine it's the best GBA game that no one played.

I blame Nintendo mostly for its medicore reception. They did next to nothing to promote the thing, even once it hit. A brand new and rather creative IP and a new take on platforming and it just sat on store shelves. Sad. :(

neschamp

OK, so earlier today I finished getting all 31 treasures and I am more relieved that I am done with the game than satisfied with my overall gaming experience. Those last two secret areas have some incredibly cheap sections that are not fun or creative at all. It turned into "lets see how much shit we can jam into this one passage that shoots/electrocutes/slimes/smashes/explodes and then put it over an endless pit". What the fuck happened to Game Freak's clever but fair level design? I must be a masochist (or just an idiot) to go through some of those areas over and over again. Anyone else take the time to find all the treasures?

With that said, I do still think it ranks really high in the list of all-time great platformers. I was curious to see what some of you guys rank ahead of Drill Dozer in terms of quality and or originality.

I'd put it WAAAAAAAAAAY above any of the Sonic games, except maybe CD. IMO even the original ones were overrated (they were fast and looked great, which counted for a lot back then-in retrospect, they weren't half as good as plenty of 8-bit platformers IMO)

Hey, I'd not only put it first, I'd put Yoshi's Island WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY down the list of platformers. I've never understood the appeal of that game. I loved the graphics of course, but blew through it in a day and never looked back (and thought it was kind of shallow while I was playing it). My brother had the same reaction-actually he was actively insulting it while I played for how lame it was compared to the earlier games.
