...And it's not about selling opened games as "new".

I went to take a game back to the closest B&M store during my lunch hour and the manager told me that they couldn't take games back from the warehouse because they've converted to gamestop's system. I didn't make a big deal out of it, so I called the online customer service. I was prepared for them to act like dicks but they said they'd send me out a prepaid envelope, so I was cool with the fact that they were willing to do at least something to help me out.

I was wondering, could it be that the store manager didn't want to take the game back because it would count againt the bottom line of his store (or that he didn't know what he was doing)?

I was prepared not to do business with EB anymore, but I've thought about it and since they're willing to send a prepaid envelope I'll buy from them again but not until they have their merger worked out - assuming the manager was telling the truth. Still sucks that it says on the reciept that I can return games to their stores.

I'm not an EB employee, but I just returned a game in-store that I bought online on Sunday or Monday. Until EB officially changes their policy, it is what it is.

EB just changed their computers last night, however.

I don't know if you're being serious, or are just using a joke I considered throwing in at the end of my post.

But for the record their corporate policy remains:

Items may be returned or exchanged by shipping them to EBgames.com, or by taking them to an EB Games store location in the United States. Items returned to an EB Games store location must be accompanied by the original packing list. To ship a product to EBgames.com, include the packing list, identify the reason for the return and send it to the address on the return shipping label.

What I meant is that, apparently last night was the night EB switched all their computers over to some new system Gamestop is putting in... of course your return worked Monday, they were still on the "old system".

I know you can return them to EB, but times are changing, and they probably just didn't update the EBgames part of the list... it makes sense though that the new GS oriented system couldn't process EBgames.com returns, since gamestop can't process returns from gamestop.com either.

Ah. I was actually gonna add to my post "Unless they've overhauled their system since then" kinda tongue-in-cheek, but I guess I would have been right.

Needless to say I will be ordering less online if the no in-store return policy becomes permanent. Though I thought someone said not long ago that GS was now accepting returns from the website. So hopefully its just an issue with the system change-over.

What exactly do they do when you return defective games ordered online? The ones I've returned the store, I just tell it's defective, they look at the order form(to make sure it was ordered from them) and then swap the disc. There's no paper work or anything.

If they ditch the no-instore returns, that's going to piss a lot of people off(including me). Cause that means that if you want another copy, you'll have to take your chances that you won't get another defective copy from the warehouse.

Your lucky, my EB store will refund me if a game is defective, they will even give me the refund on a gift card so I can use the credit online again, but they wont swap my bad disc for a new one, cos they cost more in the store. Because I got the extra 15% off from buying online, they try to charge me the difference if they swap, so I always just take the credit.

They do the return as most stores would. Credit back the amount for the copy I had, and then charge me for the new copy.

When I have done this at GameStop, they just gave me a new disc as you described.

And Puffa, whenever they refund me money (exchange or cash refund) they always refund me their list price. Meaning even though my packing slip for Breath of Fire II (GBA) said I paid $16.11 ($14.99 + tax), they refunded me $21.49 ($19.99 + tax), so I usually make a few bucks profit when I return an item. Only once did they manually edit the transaction to match the amount I paid. So, the one time they actually exchanged an item (usually it was defective NES/SNES carts, so they never had anything to exchange with), there was no cost difference.
