It seems the single player demo for Rainbow Six: Vegas (http://wiki.xboxic.com/Rainbow_Six:_Vegas) won’t be exclusively available to OXM readers after all (http://www.xboxic.com/news/1742). In an official press release Ubisoft stated that the demo will be available on the Xbox Live Marketplace October 23rd. This is a month earlier than expected, but I’m sure nobody will object.

Kicking off the countdown to the game's release, Ubisoft announced today that a single player playable demo of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas for the Xbox 360 will be made available to consumers. The Xbox 360 demo will be available exclusively this month as part of the December issue of Official Xbox Magazine in the U.S., on sale at newsstands on October 24th. The demo will be made available for download on Xbox Live Marketplace in November.
The single player demo features part of the "Dante's Casino" level of the single player mission. Players will Observe, Plan and Assault (O.P.A.) their way through the Gothic-themed casino that is under construction and believed to be a hideout for the terrorist leaders.

Update 7/13: Vegas Mayor wants to prevent game from releasing
Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman is taking exception to the setting of another Tom Clancy game, Ubisoft's upcoming Rainbow Six Vegas. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2006/Jul-08-Sat-2006/news/8367726.html), Goodman has an issue with the game's plot, which sees terrorists taking over a swanky casino on the city's Strip and seizing a number of hostages.
Goodman reportedly said the game was "based on a false premise," adding he has been repeatedly told by government officials that Las Vegas is "the safest place imaginable" when it comes to terrorist attacks. The mayor also said he'll look into whether or not the city can prevent the game from being released. "It could be harmful economically, and it may be something that's not entitled to free speech [protection]," Goodman is quoted as saying.

Here's the details:
Monday 03.06.06 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas! (http://rainbowsixgame.com/us/newspost.php?id=14984)
UBISOFT GOES ALL-IN WITH TOM CLANCY’S RAINBOW SIX® VEGAS FOR NEXT-GENERATION CONSOLES!
SAN FRANCISCO - MARCH 6, 2006 - Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announced that it is developing Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® Vegas for next-generation and current-generation video game consoles. Scheduled for a fall 2006 release and developed by Ubisoft's award-winning Montreal studio, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas is the fifth iteration of the multimillion-selling Rainbow Six tactical shooter franchise.
The stakes are high when the world's most elite counter-terrorism unit enters Las Vegas, where over 36.7 million men, women and children visit each year. "Sin City," the home of the famous Las Vegas Strip, flashy hotels, high-rolling casinos and world-famous celebrities, becomes the setting for a terrorist threat of global proportions. What happens when one of the world's most famous cities is held hostage by terrorists? Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas will be Team Rainbow's next-generation console debut on the heels of the critically acclaimed Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter™ and the highly anticipated Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent™. Today, with more than 13.5 million units sold worldwide, the Rainbow Six franchise is known as one of the best multiplayer experiences and is hailed for its immersive single-player games.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas will push the envelope of technology through graphics, artificial intelligence, physics and animations created by Ubisoft's award-winning Montreal studios, which house some of the world's best talent, including Senior Producer Chadi Lebbos who was the lead on Rainbow Six 3®.
"Rainbow Six is back and better than ever," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft. "Building upon the online success of the Rainbow Six franchise and harnessing the power of the next-generation experience, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas will be the benchmark against which all next-generation games will be measured. With Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter being released this month to wide critical acclaim, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent also due out this year, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas makes it a perfect trifecta for the Clancy series in 2006."
Rainbow Six fans will be pleased to know that Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas is featured in a world-exclusive first-look in the April issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, available on newsstands March 14, 2006.

Update 3/13: EGM info:
- the game (http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=425634#) has been in development for nearly 2 years now
- after the debacle known as Suckdown...I mean Lockdown, development was taken away from Red Storm and given to Ubi-Montreal
- you will play as one character, don't ask me his name because I didn't care to remember it - all I remember is that it was some generic tough-guy white man name (Ding Chavez does make a return though)
- you will have 2 or 3 teammates who will have unique (ie, "cliche") personalities
- the game will be presented using the "Half-Life" (yes that is exactly what they said) style of storytelling using only the first-person perspective and no cutscenes (not that there were very many cutscenes in the previous games (http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=425634#) anyway)
- the game will have lots of destructability/interactivity in the environments and you will be able to do stuff like rappel down the sides of buildings and fast-rope out of choppers
- it appears that there will be no pre-mission planning phase (just like Suckdown) rather you will issue commands "on-the-fly" (like in Raven Shield)
- it will be a more "cinematic" presentation as your teammates will engage in conversations and ARGUE during the missions
- game is not using any form of the Unreal engine that previous R6 games used nor is it using the GR:AW engine, it's using its own graphics engine.
- THE GAME WILL FEATURE A "HALO-STYLE" HEALTH SYSTEM WHERE YOU WILL RECOVER YOUR HEALTH IF YOU STAY OUT OF THE ACTION FOR A BIT!!!
Quotes of interest:
"So, what should you expect? Less dying, for one: The Team is adding a Halo-style health system, whereby avoiding fire will give you time to heal, meaning you'll ultimately spend less time picking "Retry Mission" from a menu screen."
"Ubisoft has brought the new game back in-house at Rainbow Six 3's original studio in Montreeal and has thrown a team of 150 people at the title, wich has been in development since 2004."
"Gameplay will be very cat-and-mouse, kills will not come easy."
"Blind fire and "no look" suppressing fire will be important components as well; the action switches to a third-person, over-the-shoulder camera during these moments, much like in 360 launch title Perfect Dark Zero."
"As mentioned before, the game is also no longer limited to solid ground. With so much of Las Vegas towering some 80 stories above street level, the city provides countless opportunities to scale up and rappel down buildings. Standard rappelling, fast roping (quickly sliding down a rope, slowing the fall with only clenched hands), and inverted rappelling (also known as Australian rappelling)"
EDIT: This latest info comes from what I found in other forums....

I'm hoping its some sort of surprise and not just "Rainbow Six is being developed for XBOX 360..."
The news of a next gen Rainbow Six has been floating around for a while, it was in last months GamePro and the current EGM's preview for April's issue.

So this won't be just a 360 version of Critical Hour?
I was worried it was going to be similiar to the Far Cry 360 game, something like Lockdown (minus all the features fans complained about) and Critical Hour.
I wonder if Ubi is taking the franchise in a new direction, I believe John Clark is retiring during the course of Critical Hour. Ding is supposed to be in charge of the group, so we'll see.

Rainbow Six - close, indoor combat

Suck on that Killzone 2 MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH... Seriously though those images fucking rock. I'm not a huge fan of the series and when I say that I mean I don't buy the game when it hits shelves. I do own a few of the games, most recent RB6 3, but the direction Clancy is going by immersing the player into Vegas is outstanding. I guess this means Clancy will reign in squad base games for at least another gen.:)

Recharging health system? For Halo it makes sense because your wearing an armor suit, for the characters in R6 it doesn't make sense. This rainbow team must have superpowers.

LOL, that is very true. I wonder if they will incorporate any type of side games for the hell of it since it will be in vegas. Side games like blackjack, poker, callgirls, etc... That would be just as ridiculous in this game as their magical recharging powers are.

Today we find out that the game will allow users to facemap their faces onto the ingame characters:
Ubisoft's Rainbow Six: Vegas enables players to map their face onto an in-game character (like Neversoft first did with Tony Hawk's Underground).

How did Tony Hawk do it on the PS2? Was there approvals or was it just for single player?
THUG (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/sports/thug/review.html?page=2&q=):
The process to put your face on one of the game's skaters is a simple one. You must take a clean, straight-on, shadowless photo of your face. Then you send that shot in via e-mail or by using a cell phone camera. Shortly after sending in the shot, you'll receive an e-mail reply with an eight-character code. You then take that code to the game and enter it. The game then gets online and downloads the shot. From there, you need to line up the face's points to match those of the polygonal model, and you should ensure that the skin tone of the face texture matches the rest of the body.
THUG2 had EyeToy support:
The PC and PlayStation 2 versions get the additional bonus of online play and a face mapping feature that lets you take a picture of yourself and put it onto your created skater. The face mapping works largely as it did in the previous game, though the PlayStation 2 version now has EyeToy support, making it a bit easier to get your face in the game. The trade-off is that you'll usually get better results with a photo from a digital camera. On the PC, you simply must crop a face image down to 128x128 pixels and import it from the game's front end.
Las Vegas reminds me a lot of Splinter Cell from the video I saw at E3, which doesn't surprise me since Ubisoft Montreal is behind it. It might be the first Rainbow Six game I've ever been interested in.

Doubt it, they aren't gonna just cancel the game and say "oh well" because the mayor of Vegas has a problem with it. They've got way too much invested in the game at this point to throw all of that away.

The outfitting was one of the things I enjoyed from the strange, strange world of Rainbow Six: Lockdown.

Yup, thats correct:
As for online co-op, the game will include the always-excellent Terrorist Hunt mode and span 23 maps. You can create a unique character for use here, which brings us to Ubisoft's Persistent Elite Creation 2.0.
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/733/733601p2.html
In addition to the varied adversarial modes, Vegas will also feature a cooperative element for up to four players. You'll be able to play through the whole single-player campaign with your buddies, as well as some missions that were created specifically for the multiplayer maps. The competitive game, on the other hand, will allow for up to 16 players, and you'll be able to customize the experience in whatever manner you'd like, such as kit restrictions and respawn options. Finally, the game will be playable in just about every configuration supported by the system, including split screen, system link, and via Xbox Live.

If they get shot while down and die, the demo ends.

I love how it controls though. Hold X to equip a silencer, hold Y to change weapons, hold right bumper to toggle between heat vision and night vision.. hold left trigger against objects to lean against them.. it got comfortable real fast.
I want to go buy that OXM now.. I can wait til Nov 1st when it comes on XBLM.. or whenever it wa coming. Haha on that roof part, you can either walk down a ramp or you can rappell (can't spell) down to the first floor.. I chose the latter and got lit up like a christmas tree the second I hit the ground.
Oh and when you get shot, the screen goes really blurry.. if you're near death, it goes black and white on top of the blurriness.

Well, you might not want to get too excited. I've played SWAT, but not a whole lot. So some might not agree with me. I guess the comparison for me is in level design not being as linear as the old Rainbow Six games and I felt being able to mark enemies and the breaching was a little more like SWAT.

You just press "A" to choose them where to go. If there is a ladder or something click A on that and they will go on it. The Door and Rapple Window part you hit either Up Left or Right on the D Pad to choose and Action. For the Door. Left will place a breaching charge on the door. Right will Open door then Frag room. Up will just open door. Simple stuff.

I didn't like it that much. Like it's been mentioned, the frame rate just plain sucks (which is one of the few graphical problems that really turns me off.)
aside from that, it just seemed like GRAW but in a 1st person view and not nearly as fun since you have less control over your team and surroundings.

The demo was ok. I was kind of expecting it to be much better, but it's just a demo. Kind of disappointed that you don't have much control over what your teammates can do, and I still can't believe after all this time (unless I'm missing something), you can't move your squad members individually. Regardless of where I tell them to take cover, one of the idiots stays out in the open and gets his ass shot. It's a squad-based shooter for crying out loud, and I think it'd allow for much more tactical scenarios if that was possible.
But whatever, it's fun nonetheless.

The game was pretty good but I don't see how everyone on CAG is wetting their pants over the demo atleast. The control was as good as past Rainbow Six games but the graphics were under whelming (although I have a SDTV) and I didn't feel it was above and beyond what I last played of Black Arrow, where as Ghost Recon was a huge step up.
I still want this game but I can't decide if I want to get this or Gears of War more.

How is that funny? Rainbow Six (and tactical shooters in general) has been done many, many times before. Gears of War is a fresh style on the shooter genre-- something gamers haven't played before.

This should finally answer it:
Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announces that Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six(r) Vegas for the Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft has gone gold and will ship to stores in North America on November 20, 2006.

Gold just means that they have finished the master copy of the game and it can be pressed onto the retail discs and packaged.

There's no one button cover to cover move like gears, but I really like being able to move in and out of cover so smoothly with the left trigger. I don't feel like I get "stuck" the way I sometimes do in Gears.

Was there supposed to be more included with the LE? I only ask because the paper sleeve is about 1/8" thicker than the plastic case is. In otherwords, there is a significant gap between the case and the paper sleeve that goes over it. I'm assuming it's just a mistake of Ubisoft either not finalizing the LE design until the last minute or someone there simply doesn't know how to measure right.

Picked it up today, and it was well worth it. The single player is just what you'd expect from a RS game, but the cover system adds an all-new depth to it. The blurry darkness effect (when you get shot) does tend to hurt your eyes though, but it works great and adds to the atmosphere of the game. As one would expect the AI isn't that smart (even on the "realistic" difficulty), though at times they are pretty good at flanking you. I still would have wished that you could individually command your teammates, so hopefully they can work that out for the next installment. To put it in simpler terms, it's almost like a fusion of Gears of War and GRAW if you think about it. It would have been better if they took some cover tactics from Gears of War though. The rappelling option also adds a different perspective on how to tackle the game and has a tremendous affect on how you plan certain assaults; not to mention it's awesome when 4 people break through different windows on opposite sides to infiltrate the building.
As for the multiplayer portion it's pretty awesome; especially when you're doing 4-player co-op story/hunt over live. For those of you wondering, I'm not sure if there is 4-player co-op on one console but I will check (I know that there is 2 player coop on one console though). With every game, you gain experience, which helps you achieve higher ranks, and allows you to unlock new equipment for your character. Multiplayer has various options to choose from, with the best probably being "attack and defend." The other options are your basic multiplayer games like deathmatch, team deathmatch, survival, etc. The max amount of players I've been in was 14, but I'm not sure if it goes any higher than that. I did experience some lag when it got all crazy in the casino, but that was due to some people with horrible connection speeds. No lag whatsoever in the co-op games though.
The graphics are nice especially in the single player, but (like in GRAW) when you go into multiplayer mode the graphics seem to take a major hit in detail and clarity (clearly not "next-gen"). It's no Gears of War graphics, but it's good in its own right. The gun sounds, explosions, and music all seem like they come straight out of "24," and it makes you feel like Jack Bauer sometimes. All of them are very authentic, and I think they did a great job on focusing on the realism of their weapons.
Using the Vision Cam (gets you 30 achievement points btw) is sort of a bonus than anything. While it does seem to get an accurate picture of the person (make sure you do this when the sun is still out) the face doesn't seem to blend in all that well with all the other graphical textures in the game. It just looks weird, and sometimes horrible from different angles. Maybe my friend did it wrong, but it's still hilarious to see his face whenever we get into a game.
Overall the game is a great addition to the Rainbow 6 series. It's a must buy if you've got a 360 (mainly for the multiplayer experience; especially the co-op gameplay). I would have to give it an 8.5/10, as there are still some issues that need to be fixed (AI, squad control, matchmaking). It's not the best game out there, but it's solid and the multiplayer will make you come back for more.
If any CAGs want to play some co-op add me. I'll probably be on all night. Make sure to set your 3-letter prefix to "CAG" to show your spirit.:D

Great review. Ill get it when it dips a little bit lower. Thanks!

or can someone post up scans about the co-op, because I want to be sure that the game has 2-player split-screen offline co-op.

Anyone playing the single-player campaign on Realistic? I am in desperate need of help on Dante's Casino..
When you reach the arcade and Gabriel, then what would seem like every terrorist within a mile radius starts storming into the room; how in the HELL do you survive? I did a good job fighting them off at first, killed several, but they just keep coming, the team and I get severely overwhelmed/mauled and that's it. Every time, no matter what kind of strategy I try to use.. it's driving me mad.

They are similar, terrorist hunt is just co-op in the multiplayer maps. Both have the same player limits.

Either the last mission in the campaign is glitched or I really don't know what the hell is going on. I wasted a couple hours trying to get it done and it was all for nothing.
In the warehouse where you have to hack the computer so you can get to Irena, no matter what I do, I always get a mission failed because "Irena got away" or something ridiculous like that. I'm not doing anything to cause this.. I just sit down there and fend off the terrorists the best I can while Jung hacks the computer. Isn't that what I'm suppose to be doing here?
I don't get it.. but I'm done trying for a while, too much frustration.

The computer got destroyed or the guy using it died. That part is pretty hard, the best way to beat it is to figure out where they rope down from and kill them before they shoot.

Oh okay.. seem to have run into another snag though. After I kill all the guys that drop down, Jung just seems to endlessly hack the computer and never finishes (I sat there waiting for about 4-5 minutes). I send Michael around the room to check for any that may be hiding but nothing.. and I can't go out to check myself or the mission ends.
What's up with this?
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. I moved forward a little amongst all the boxes and it triggered more terrorists to spawn. Makes no sense, but that was it.

The only frustrating thing about this game is the online matchmaking part. You get booted from games a lot. Also once you finish a game it kicks you back out to the multiplayer screen and you have to search for another one all over.
Don't get me started on the dweebs that sit in the game ready up screen and dont hit ready and make you wait forever.
These things make it hard to maximize your playing time and get promotion points.
Other then that, the game is more then I expected and incredibly fun.

Other then that, the game is more then I expected and incredibly fun.I haven't been booted too many times, but searching for a game to play in is pretty quick. The only problem I've experienced in online multiplayer is that laggy games tend to freeze my 360. So I would advise if you ever get in a laggy game just exit right away. You can usually tell if it's going to lag if there are 2 or more people with red connection speeds or if you hear someone consistently firing a rifle for more than 5 seconds (it tends to go on for a minute, meaning someone glitched out/froze).
Another glitch I've experienced is that in lobbies, not everyone can hear you (even those on your team). The lobby is designed so that everyone (even the opposing team) can hear you, but that's not the case. Just don't worry if your teammates can't hear you in the lobby. Everything is fixed to team speak only once the game is launched.
In addition, I love how you can hear the opposing team's chatter if they use their mics when they are in close proximity to you (much like Halo 2), so sometimes you can figure out how they are going to assault a certain place you're defending.
As for the single player (now that I've got some more time in), I still wish there was a way to individually give out orders to each member. They always stay too close to each other and then get fragged or even get in each other's way when shooting at hostiles. I also would have like to option to pick what equipment each squad member would use as well (like in the old school Rainbow Six games).
