What exactly do they mean? Is it just for respect, or can you eventually maybe get stuff with them?

Why are they so desired to be unlocked?

Just adds replayability to a game to try and unlock the points. They essentially mean nothing, only proves how long you've played/how skilled you are at a game.

Its for when Halo 3 is released, people can look at your gamerscore in the pre-game lobby and call you a noob or retard for not having it so high before the game even starts.

Ah, that's what I assumed.

Definitely makes me much less enthusiastic to get them, as now I do not care.

Whatever. All I know is I have TWICE as many points as you therefore I rule twice as much.

I think most people overlook some of the best parts of the achievement system. You can examine games that other players have played. Did you have fun with a player on a game of Perfect Dark? See if he/she plays other stuff you like.

Plus you can prove that you've beaten a particular difficulty, etc. without having to just have others take your word for it.

It's not the best aspect of Live, but it's a cool addition, IMO.
