View Full Version : Is the XBLA Marketplace headed down a slippery slope?

I just bought Crystal Quest for $5 and I think it's worth the money but as I was browsing the downloadable content I noticed that for an extra 100 marketplace points you can buy an "Xtreme Scenario" version of the game where everything is worth twice as much scoring-wise. Obviously it's easier to get to the top of the leaderboard when everyhthing counts double.
Either charge 500 points for the whole game and be done with it or don't pull crap like this. I can live with useless skins or whatever costing extra if they don't impact the game but to give players an advantage who pay more for "bonus material" is headed down a path that is going to end up pissing everyone off.
I don't think it matters as much to people who don't ONLY use their 360 to play XBLA games like you do man.

Yeah, I love the 360 arcade and all, but I'd consider it more a bonus feature than anything else.

right, personally, i wouldnt be dead without it, but its awesome to have in the dashboard to mess around with. MS added it to make some more money, and theyre gonna do it however they want. Go play some real games, the games you spent $400 on the system for

Umm, I agree with OP, there shouldnt be this unfair advantage to whoever wants to spend the 100 points. Id be pissed if I cared about the game and scoring on the leaderboard.

isn't the solution simple? make 2 leader boards?
i'm assuming they haven't though, thus arises the problem.

I had no idea they had a 'double your score' mode. I'll have to check it out. I thought it was onky music/graphic remix.
Anyways, 3 new games will be coming out in the next week....SWEET!

The XBLA sucks. Huge potential, totally not being used at all right now.

STFU! You suck!
No seriously...
I never see you on here and thought for a bit you had left CAG. Nice to see you alive, man! And, I 100% agree with you. I do enjoy my 360 but yet to spend a dime on XBLA. I might buy Street Fighter II. Maybe.

I've bought about four games now. The only one worth it has been Geometry Wars. The others are more like short disctractions than any kind of addictive fun. They work great for me since I have two young kids and don't want to expose them to too much violence. I can fiddle on GW or Hexic if I want to play they're awake, and throw in a real game once they're in bed.
I could care less about different versions. It's kind of lame, but seriously - if you value the leaderboards that much, that's actually kind of sad. The only leaders I ever check out are my friends scores. And I'd just rip on them and call them pussies if they had to buy a higher scoring version to beat me.

The 360 website has some pictures/videos.
One is called Feeding Frenzy where you are various fishes trying to eat other fishes. The other two are puzzle games...again.

i play my XBLA games more than my 360, i love the arcade, without it, my 360 purchase would have been meh : /
though when Oblivion comes out >_>
The XBLA sucks. Huge potential, totally not being used at all right now.It just came out 3 months ago. It's not going to immediately explode with weekly game releases.

But I shouldn't have to (or they should charge 100 points more for the game to begin with). What happens when Tecmo releases a new DOA4 character for 800 Marketplace points that inflicts twice as much damage as the other character? It would be complete BS and a slap in the face to those who already shelled out $60 for the game. I'd have no problems with releasing extra costumes or whatever for sale though... you know, stuff that doesn't fundamentally affect the original game.

Every character has its advantages and disadvantages. If a new character inflicted twice as much damage it would probably move and hit very slow.
Just like in the upgrade to Crystal Quest, the game is harder. You may score more points, but who cares if you die all the damn time.

The release of SFII will likely open the floodgates and bump the quality and quantity of games being released up a notch. I'm not expecting a ton of stuff this soon after launch. By summer we should be set with a lot of good stuff to keep busy with when not playing regular 360 games.

yes but the difference is you only spent $5 initially, not 60. Theyre seeing how much do people really want to get on those leaderboards probably, to see if they should do it in the future if a lot of people buy it for this game

I'm more pissed about late demos for games that have been out for three months. I mean come on, they just NOW released Call of Duty 2 and King Kong as demos. Who cares about those games anymore? We done played them all! Lets get something NEW.

I agree as well. Paying for an advantage over others is just wrong. I wouldn't play that game. Bring on Street Fighter! That will be my first game purchase from live.

So has anyone actually bought the Extreme Mode and actually felt like they had an advantage? I'm planning on buying it, but it just seems like a whole lot of speculation over a very little thing that nobody has experience with in this topic.

I have not bought it and I don't think I plan to. I know 100 points isn't a lot but I already paid $5 for a $0.99 game. Right now the leaderboards aren't too crowded with "Xtreme Mode" players yet but time will tell if that changes.
EDIT: I do love the game though for some strange reason.

That has a lot to do with developers more than Microsoft, although i'm sure Microsoft has some say in it. A lot of people still care about those games, mainly Call of Duty 2. I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet, and I don't see any harm in releasing the demo at all. It was a launch title, so people who just got their 360's might want to play the demo if they didn't get the chance to yet.
