I dunno, I don't think it's as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. The music scene is pretty dismal, but Austin is only an hour and a half away so it's not that big of a deal. If you're into movies there's decent number of theatres, plus we finally have outlets for those of us who are into the niche arthouse junk. The heat can be a bitch(where the hell did winter go this year?) but we don't have to deal with bullshit like shoveling our driveways and driving in the snow. My biggest gripe I guess is that there's seemingly always some inconvenient road construction going on but aside from that traffic isn't too bad compared to other big cities.

As far as shopping goes, it's OK. We're missing a lot of stuff(Fry's?) but it's getting better and I get into a lot of CAG deals without issue(I guess there's not too many active CAGs around here yet?). The only problem is occasionally asshole FatWallet/SD'ers will catch wind of something and take advantage of it but that's pretty seldom(In fact, the only issues I've had are with the Circuit City Summer '04 sale and with tracking down a 360 for the holidays).

Kinda OT, anyone check out the new Best Buy locations that opened over the weekend? I checked out the City Base store on Friday and I have to say I'm pretty dissapointed. At first I was pretty thrilled considering that I've been wanting a BBY on this side of town for a while but it's way too small IMO. Maybe it's becaue there were a ton of people, but I figured the store is at least half as small as the Ingram/San Pedro locations, if not more. Not sure if it's because of space issues or if BBY is trying something new, but the DVD/Game aisles(I assume it applies for CDs too) are really cramped and setup diagonally so it's kinda weird. It's still good for me though since I don't have to drive all the way to Ingram anymore so it's not too bad. Anyone check out the La Cantera location?

I was actually at The Shops at La Cantera today but did not hit up Best Buy.

The heat shouldn't bug me since I have been in Louisiana and baghdad in the summer. How is the housing apartment market?

6669
02-27-2006, 08:33 AM
Apartments are pretty cheap (some starting in about $600 a month).

La Cantera is for rich people, so I wouldn't even bother looking for a deal there. Dont expect to find any "hidden gems" when the deals start, because all the good games are usually long gone before they go on clearance. The only good thing is that there are a lot of stupid people here, which works to your advantage when there's deals like the last CC sale.

You can get some pretty good deals in the medical center area, which is a great area. You could get something there easily for less than 600 with your military discount.

Another thing you'll have to get used to is the humidity, every time I visit SA it takes me about an hour to get used to it.

When did the Alamo Drafthouse come to town?

San Antonio is a great place to visit, but I'm not sure if I'd live there again. The housing is dirt cheap, especially compared to San Diego. There are quite a few things to do in SA to keep you busy; you can visit tourist traps like the Riverwalk, Rivercenter Mall and of course the Alamo. There’s also Fiesta Texas, Seaworld, Tower of the Americas, many museums, the symphony, the zoo, botanical gardens, any many other interesting places. Of course SA has quite a few clubs if you’re into that scene and there’s also 6th street up in Austin which is a short hop away.

The food there is great, at least IMHO. Texmex is the local flavor and the BBQ there is awesome, lots of great places to eat cheaply. Also SA doesn’t shut down at 10pm like a lot of places I’ve been. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a bite to eat or do some shopping in the middle of the night which is nice.

If you have any specific questions feel free to shoot ‘em my way.

IIRC the Drafthouse opened up circa summer '04 so it's been a year and a half, I think. Anyone have any opinions on it? I know that Austin locations are great but the local one seems a lot more restrained. I assume(because of the location) it took over the Westlake theatres by the mall? I never checked them out so I'm interested in hearing about how good it's set-up. I was actually going to go this weekend since it's the closest place that's playing Tommy Lee Jones' new indie/western movie but I ran out of time.

Oh yeah, are there any other GameCrazy's around aside from the one on SW Military and the other on Castroville Road, I think(across the street from the cemetary). I tried looking it up on their site but it doesn't let you select the range.

Not really. There's maybe 2 more, but one of the ones that supposedly has one doesn't even have the GameCrazy sign in there. Its just Hollywood Video.

there are 4 gamecrazies in san antonio and 2 around it. I have visited most of those. The draft house have the best wings i ever tasted. The prices are reasonable too. It's like 5 bucks each for the movie and like 6-8 for a decent meal. I go there all the time with my girlfriend.

I've been looking very closely at Grande Communications. (http://www.grandecom.com) I've heard good things about them and it looks like I can save about $75 a month by dumping Time Warner & AT&T and going with these guys. I'm probably going to sign up with them when I move later this summer. The only drawback I see is they don't offer on-demand channels, but I hardly ever watch those anyway.

Oh and here is the house I am trying to rent. Is there anything kooky about that neighborhood I need to know about?
It's a fairly new neighborhood where the houses are crammed in tight. Average lot size in S.A. is 60x120, in that subdivision it's 45x120. I'm trying to buy a house just a few streets over to the west. (http://www.bradfieldproperties.com/property/property.asp?PRM_MLSNumber=579092&PRM_MlsName=SanAntonio) Overall it's a pretty nice area, but like everywhere else, it's getting crowded very quickly.

The newest mall is La Cantera .... very expensive. From there, it goes to North Star, then Ingram.

Mojimbo

Ingram is pretty close to the house you listed. CAG-wise, it has a Sears, EB Games, FYE and KB Toys. There's a shopping center right next to it with a Gamestop, Best Buy and Circuit City among other stores.

Every time I walk in there, it looks like it has been bombed out. I understand it's a mall store, but the Gamestop at North Star doesn't look that bad.

Mojimbo
06-06-2006, 06:03 PM
Oh yeah, I don't really look forward to going to EB/Gamestops in general because they're so cramped. It's akward taking your time to look for something when you feel like you're always back to back with an employee.

FYI: The Best Buy @ San Pedro still had every guide from Monday's penny drop as of this morning. I only picked up 3(DQ8, MGA2, FFIV) because I didn't want to look like a jackass but I'll probably go back and see if I can snag some more(GTA:LCS, PD0, M&L2) that I was interested in. The one at Ingram already pulled theirs unfortunately.

my dad used to use bb online before they had that center here in town. we thought it was horrible. we had a bunch of movies on que that were avaliable and they never shipped them. there was even a whole month where they didn't send jack, and my dad was paying for it. idk, maybe it was just us. too bad they didn't have that center here earlier.

I think by "run out" he meant "we're not expecting over 100 people to wait for hours on end outside the store on the 18th."

So by now they're probably all gone.

BB at the forum did run out that morning, as did Target and TRU at the Forum.
The Lackland and Ft. Sam AAFES's had drawing to determine who gets a Wii. When the Randolph PX gets theirs, they'll do the same thing.

Anyone know of any independant game stores around SA? There was one tucked away in Schertz that I used to go to before I moved up to Austin a few years back, but it's gone now that I've come back to SA. D=

Hmm, I think I remember seeing a "Gamer's Edge" on Rector, behind North Star Mall(Basically go north on San Pedro, turn right on Rector right before the mall and it should be in a shopping center on your right before you hit the light). I was always curious but I figured it wasn't worth checking it out because I get better deals fucking over the chain stores because they're always anxious to get rid of stuff to clear shelf space.

How did you guys do today? I don't really have the money to invest into the really kickass Black Friday deals nor the inclination to camp out overnight for something I can't afford so I just ordered a $90 Canon all in one printer/scanner/copier for $20 at Best Buy with in-store pickup and went in after noon when they were all gone, as was much of the crowd. Great for me because I needed new ink carts anyways and it turned out way cheaper than that. Got in and out in 10 minutes. It was at the new SW Military BBY that they built over the closed TRU. I thought it would be too cramped but it feels way more spaced out than the Brooks store, so I'm happy.

Hah, I saw on the news tonight that one Best Buy already had a shitload of campers, they said NW so I assume it's Ingram. Fucking ridiculous, I'm glad I can wait until they work the kinks out and it's available for 10% off and no tax. I'm hoping the Wii will be like the DS, where it won't be readily available everywhere but it also won't be too hard to find if you drive around.
Hahaha! I went with my friends when they picked up their Wii at the GameSTOP in front of that Best Buy for the midnight release. We yelled "WIIIIIIIIII!" at the people over at Best Buy. One of the guys I know from SAC held his Wii aloft and did the Zelda item get fanfare.

And the reason I was interested in an independant store is because they usually have the older stuff I'm looking for. Right now I need a couple Saturn controllers to disect to make some homebrew Twinsticks for Virtual-On. And I need to get some stuff for some of my older consoles.

During today's shopping I did pick up a couple Dreamcast controllers for under ten bucks total at a Gamecrazy as well as a new PS2 network adapter for $11.

They've been closed for about a year now. Store wasn't much to write home about anyways. GameFellas in North Star was much better, but it too closed down about two years ago.

How did you guys do today?
Picked these up at Circuit City:
--$2.99 after rebates - 1GB SD memory card (for when I finally get a Wii)
--$9.99 ar - Netgear wireless router (for my PSP and eventually Wii)

In all I saved about $166, but I had to wait in line almost 3 hours. At least I had my PSP to keep me company! :)

I've actually been thinking about that a lot recently, mostly because I'm getting tired of getting cut-off on the highway by no-blinker-using jackasses with Mexican plates but I feel guilty about calling them out.

I'm Mexican-American(as in, I was born in Mexico and immigrated into the US as a kid, got citizenship a few years ago) and I still have family over there so I have a lot of compassion for the plight of the Mexican people. It doesn't seem to me that the people who come with travel visas to blow their loads at Macy's are the ones I should give a fuck about though, they're usually the yuppies from the cities near the border who shit all over the people lower than them on the social hierarchy back home.

To be fair, the shopping centers in Mexico are usually more like flea markets stocked almost exclusively with cheap counterfeit shit and the real malls are even more expensive than here so I can understand wanting to save up to get a deal over here on quality stuff, this is CAG after all. Basically as long as they mind their manners I welcome them(even the yuppies), but if they fuck up they deserve whatever shit they get thrown at them.

Anyone trying Best Buy tomorrow morning for a Wii?

I know exactly what you mean about their driving.
Try shopping at North Star Mall when they are there in full force. They make huge messes, they stand right in front of you when you're looking at something, and they cut in line when checking out. My b/f was looking at a videogame once (the last one) and a Mexican kid grabbed it right out of his hands and ran off to give it to his dad. Luckily, my b/f doesn't speak very good Spanish, or he probably would have said something. I remember even after the mall closes, they stay in the stores and wont leave until over an hour after we closed.

any luck on the wii at bestbuy?Got it!

I showed up at 8:30, since the BB website (and phone recording) said they opened at 9am. Turns out it was really 10am, so I waited an extra hour. I was number 18 and when I picked mine up, they still had many left. I heard people saying each store got 50, and that looked about right to me (they've since sold out). The one letdown was that they had no controllers of any kind, so the hunt continues for a bit longer.

Well, I'm off to my brother's place to play some Monkey Ball and Wii Sports! :D

sweet, hopefully i can pick one up later this week. how was the game selection?Well, I had already bought Zelda and SMB: BB earlier this week at CC, so I didn't look too hard. From what I saw they had a pretty decent selection. In my hunt over the last week, I've noticed that many places (Target, Wal-Mart, BB, CC, TRU) had a bunch of games, even Zelda, still in stock. One of the few I'm interested in that I haven't seen all over the place is Trauma Center, but if you check around a bit, you can find most any launch game fairly easy.

Wii Points, Wiimotes...

...I don't even have a Wii yet.

However, in true CAG fashion, last week I went to Best Buy at the Forum with the CC ad and purchased Red Steel and Rayman - total of $64.93 - minus $20 thanks to the gift card I received for my birthday from a friend - $44.93. And I have Far Cry on the way from the Dojo of Pain site.

Yeah, my Wii library is probably bigger than that of most people that actually have a Wii.

So, uh, anybody have some inside information on the whereabouts of the Wii in Guadalupe county? I'm finally getting impatient. Tomorrow I'm going to try to get the assistance of a BB employee that I know (don't know why I didn't do this sooner).

Not sure how accurate it is but here's the in-store pickup link for the Wii Points cards, it shows them in-stock at all the local stores, I think.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17006&type=page&sourceId=1153337017735&sourceType=product&skuId=8054428&productId=1153337017735&itemId=959493

I'm pretty sure I saw some in-stock at both Best Buys I hit on Sunday(South Park / Brooks) when I picked up my Wii but I can't say for sure. They basically had all the accessories out when the store opened including Remotes and Nunchucks but they were selling out pretty fast. I left as soon as I got my ticket and by the time I came back to pick it up(30 minutes after opening) all the Remotes were gone. I got lucky and was able to grab the last one at the South Park store though.

Speaking of Wii, I've been pleasantly surprised by the stock of Wii games at Hollywood Video around where I live. They have pretty much all the games up until Wario with multiple copies on most and usually at least 1 available. I was able to pick up a sheet for 12 coupons for free game/movie rentals on ebay for a little over $12 so it comes out to $1 Wii (or 360 or even PS3) rentals. It's really nice for stuff like CoD 3 or Red Steel which don't call for a purchase for me but I'm interested enough in them to throw one of my coupons on them.

Terrible. This morning at the EB on Rector (behind North Star Mall) 25 year-old Amber Belken was killed before she could open the store at 10am. Both doors were locked, so she wasn't found until 2pm. There were no security cameras present, and the killer is still at large.

This has me pretty freaked out. I work just down the road at a comic/game shop, and frequently stop by that store after I get off work. The girl wasn't a friend of mine, but she was a nice person and deserved better. I really hope they catch the person responsible.

Also, if you happened to be in that area between 9-10am, police are looking for any information that might help lead to an arrest. Call (210) 207-7635 if you think you can help.

On a lighter note...San Antonio is officially a cheap ass city. We give the least to charity according to Turbo Tax.

Apparently EB is closing the store on San Pedro forever. I always found it odd that there were 3 of them in the immediate vicinity.

BTW, if anyone was waiting for Wii nunchucks at Best Buy so you could use the GGC, check out the Ingram location, they had 10+ of them and a couple of classic controllers. It's probably chain wide since I saw a ton of them at the South Park store last week.

Just got back looking for clearance stuff and ran into eight Wiis at the Target past SW Military and Zarzamora. They also had some Wii accesories on clearance, the bundle pack with a stand / remote glove / 512MB SD card was down from $50 to $12. On top of that they had DS Lites in Black / White / Pink too. I'm surprised they had any of it, I would've though they'd be gone by last night because of the circular.

Rockgamer

I saw some Wiis yesterday too at the Super Target next to Crossroads Mall. Someone had just bought one, so there was about three or four left. They had the Wii accesories on clearance as well, though I didn't see any DS Lites.

I went there searching for games on clearance, but it seems like it's getting increasingly harder to find anything other than crappy PC games. Out of the three Targets I go to (the one next to Crossroads, the one near SW Military and Zarzamora, and the one near SE Military and Goliad), I haven't found any console or handheld games on clearance since about February. I don't know if they're sending them all to one location or what, but it's beginning not to be worth it to go check anymore.

Anybody here do any yardsailing? Reading this (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/archives/follow-that-sign-yard-sales-your-video-game-collection.php#more) and following some of the deals found here (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123000) have got me itching to go find some deals of my own. My main problem is I work Saturdays 12-8pm, but I do have Sundays off and Fridays I don't go in 'til 2pm. I've also occasionally found some deals at flea markets and pawn shops (just got ICO for $8).

So any bargain hunters here (retro or current-gen)? If so, what's your best or latest find?

if anyone is looking for some good video game deals, games like phoenix wright (1) for the ds and final fantasy XII collector's edition, all the gamestops on military dr. have alot of them. I was able to pick up PW for less than $20.

I picked up all the games I wanted from the Gamestop at the store in the Quarry. They still had every game by the time I went there (on Monday), and most of them (out of the ones I bought, anyway) weren't gutted.

I'm not a big fan of the Gamestops on Military anyway. A long while back (like probably about three years ago), I finally found a new copy of The Bouncer at one of them (I think it's one that has closed down since then), but the disc looked pretty bad for a supposedly new game (not anything major, but you can definitely tell it had been played before). I was just so happy to find it though that I didn't raise a fuss, though if it happened now I probably wouldn't have bought it.

That's not even the kicker, though. I was also going to buy a new copy of Z.O.E., but the copy they tried to give me didn't have the original case or instruction manual. I said 'I thought this was a new copy' and the guy was like 'it is', so then I asked how come it doesn't have the original box and manual and he said some kind of bullshit excuse like 'I can't help it if people steal the cases'. I said whatever, and obviously didn't buy it. Looking back at it now, I'm assuming they were trying to sell me a used copy of the game as new, just so they could sell it for more.

So now, the only Gamestop on Military that I go to is the one near Brooks, and sometimes I might go to the one at South Park Mall. But enough of my rant.

SL4IN

well IMO, the one by southpark mall and target/lacks is the best one to go to.

Rockgamer
06-02-2007, 12:10 AM
Now that I think about it, I've never even been to that one by Target/Lacks. Honestly though, I'm not on that side of town very often anyway (only when I need to go to a Target or Best Buy), which is why I forgot about that one.

The one I usually go to is the one on 410 and Rigsby. It's not the closest one to me, but it's the best one I go to, so it's worth the few extra miles it takes to get there. They usually always get their new games on time, they have knowlegeable employees, and if I ever do buy used games, they're always in the best condition.

Yeah, I always thought their method of doing things was weird, too. My friend worked at the Gamestop on 78 & Crestway and it's store policy that they allow you to "rent" games from the store, as long as you don't play them on the job. My friend rented new games of which they had "run out of copies," but they'd keep one copy for the staff to play. They'd also allow employees to rent "new" games, open the boxes, play the games and return them three or four days later and still sell them off as "new" copies. If anyone asked, it was their last copy and they had to use the one set out for display.
I always found it ridiculous that they use it and still sell it off as new. Yes, it's probably still in NM+ condition seeing as how it was rented only by the employees, but it doesn't change the fact that it's used.
It's not just the one on Crestway though, from what I understand every GameStop does the same thing.

Even though I know it's more than just that one, it sucks that you mention that one specifically since that's the one closest to where I live. Thank God I hardly go to Gamestop at all anymore, and on the off chance that I do it's almost never that one, despite how close it is to me.

I usually only go to GS nowadays just to preorder games or to get harder to find older games, so that means the game I want is gonna be sealed or is supposed to be used, leaving no argument in either case.

Yeah, that's the one closest to where I live as well, it's within walking distance. I generally don't buy games from GS unless they're used and more than just five bucks off. I do go there from time to time to socialize with the employees though. Quite frankly, that's the only GS I've been to where not one person that works there is a douchebag. So I like that GS, despite the fact that I'm not a big fan of the company.

$199 computer, you say? I'm gonna look into that now, since my 7-year old PC just crapped out on me (I'm typing this on my PS3). oohh, get me a ticket!

It's an emachine. Not spectacular, but better that my 5 year old computer.

Minimum 15 per store, and it's a doorbuster item, so they say you need to stand in line for at least 15 hours. Line up on Wednesday to be safe  I just don't know how the lines are going to be.

I can remember when I bought my Wii from Bestbuy. Back in January they released an ad saying they were going to have the Wii. I looked online and saw that they opened at 11, so I went to the Best Buy on Military (the building that used to be a Toys R Us). I got there at 10 but there were already people in the store. After standing in line for 20 minutes they finally told everyone that they were sold out of Wiis and everyone left. My family and I just hopped in the car and drove to the Best Buy at Brooks, asked if they still had Wiis and they pointed us to an employee that was holding a bunch of tickets. He asked us, "How many?" and we just bought one and walked out :applause:

But everyone knows about Black Friday, so I'm not sure how many other people have been planning to stand in line. Probably more than I think, so there's pretty much no hope

I'm getting Cooking Mama for the DS ($9 but I have that Gamepro $5 off coupon)
If I can find a place that has the games available I'm going to try to price match Sonic Rush and Meteos Disney Magic. I know, girly, but that's all I found and they got decent reviews. It's that or a completely horrible Wii game. Chicken shoot, or red steel :bomb: I'm considering Sims Pets...

Circuit City is too far away so that's why I'm trying to pricematch, but the Gamestop black friday ad may change what I buy. I haven't been able to view that one yet. I'll probably grab a few games with the buy 2 get 1 free used game sale.

I'm not lining up for 15 hours for a $199 PC. I think my time is worth more than the savings for sitting there. I typically pass on most Black Friday madness. I just can't justify being up that early for any type of deal.

I went to the Bestbuy near South Park mall today. They added more games to their clearance bins, but the only real deals were Elite Beat Agents for $15 and Lost in Blue 2 for $9.99. They had plenty of Lost in Blue 2 and about three more copies of EBA. They had Wario Master of Disguise for $17, not that great. A few other DS titles were $17, like two RPGs, one had Mana in the title. The games for other systems were mostly Poker games. They do have a large display filled with loose DS and PS2 games, but hardly any of them had prices.

I wanted to scream becasue I just bought a used copy Elite Beat Agents on ebay yesterday for $15. I've gone twice before to check if it was on sale and they have always had it for $29.99 :bomb:

Oh, and they were out of the Rock band special edition for the 360  and they told us the Brook's Bestbuy was out of stock too.

I also went to the Walmart out on Austin Highway and asked for Rock Band special edition. They didn't have it for the 360 but they do have it for the PS3.

The BB off of San Pedro (near North Star Mall) had a bunch of them in the middle of the store, at least ten or so. Unfortunately, I didn't check which system they were for (they were closer to the 360 games, though), but regardless, anyone looking for the game should at least call there.

Also, where did you get your used EBA from? If you got it from GS, just take it back and then go get a new copy from BB. I don't want to condone lying, but it's pretty easy to get your money back from there if you want to return a used game.

I live closer to the south side so it's difficult to just get up and drive to North Star Mall

Thanks for the tip though. My family and I will call around to a few places, but it's not deathly impotant that we have it by Christmas. Bestbuy had Rockband on black friday but my brother hadn't decided that he wanted it yet, and he didn't have the money for it either.

I bought EBA on ebay. They go from $13 on up to $25. It was $15 shipped so it comes out the same. It's used, but I'll still get the case and instruction booklet, so no worries.

So did anyone else go to the grand opening of the new Circuit City (over by The Forum) yesterday? The wait sucked, but it was worth it for a free $50 gift card. Too bad there wasn't anything worth spending it on, though I was able to pick up one of those MGS4 pre-order bonuses for a penny (obviously not worth using the gift card on).
