I read that but it's not very detailed into what exactly it provides other than a new questline. It says new weapons, armor, and enemy types but I'm curious as to what exactly they are.

ya when that came out my hopes where high of finally enjoying the game again, but it turns out that you have to complete a mission and then buy something for the place that costs $10,000+ (if I remember correctly) I only had a few thousand at the time so that shot that dream down.

I'm guessing that for the 800 point Knights of the Nine d/l on the marketplace, 360 owners aren't going to recieve all of the back catalogue of downloadable content as well... or are they?
Can anyone who has taken the plunge clarify?

I have a question about the Oblivion games disc.
First off, its been a love-hate relationship with this game. I have had constant issues with Oblivion, Dirty Disc Errors, lock ups and glitches since about hour 20. I noticed that there were several scratches on the back of the disc, the only disc in my collection that had these scratches. So I returned the game to the store where I bought it and received a replacement. The lock ups and dirty disc errors stopped.. I was convinced my original disc was the culprit and I was back in gaming heaven, I logged a good 40 hours with no issues.... but the problems returned along with the scratches, (still the only game in my collection that is not in pristine condition).
I managed to keep myself playing through all the hassles because I loved the game so much. I logged over 200 hrs and created 2 characters when it was all said and done. I felt satisfied that I did enough with the game and stopped playing it a couple months ago.
Since then my Xbox 360 had died and I received a new one (before I get flamed, I'm not blaming any particular game on the death of my system... it just simply died). Since Bethesda was offering Mehrune's Razor for free, I decided to give it another try. I was curious if my faulty system had anything to do with all the issues I had before and I was hoping for some problem-free gaming. I've been playing with this new console for quite sometime and it has worked like a charm but when I put that Oblivion disc in, the tray started to vibrate. I ejected it and put in a different game.... No vibration.... I put Oblivion back in... again it started to vibrate... It only happens when I put Oblivion in the disc tray. At this point I am not willing to risk any damage to my new console so I'm never playing that disc again.
That was a long back story but back to my original questions. Has anyone else had a similar problem with this game? Is it possible that the disc is not balanced and it's causing the vibration? Is there any differences between the limited edition and standard edition dvds, like a different graphic on the top or anything like that?

The old system was scratching the disc, it's just a coincidence that it died. Something was wrong with the system. I think Oblivion is one of the games that pushes the 360 to the limit. I haven't found a person who hasn't had the game freeze up their 360 at least once. It happened to me a handful of times throughout the course of me playing the game. You'll be fine playing Oblivion on your new 360.

I agree that Oblivion had nothing to do with the death of my last console and it almost certainly caused the scratches. The reason I'm reluctant to play Oblivion in my new console is because when I put the disc in the tray it vibrates. It makes a quiet rumbling noise that none of my other disc make. You can't notice it when the games being played and its spinning at maximum RPMs, but when its idle, like when I'm at the dashboard, you can hear the disc spinning and vibrating in the tray. Its even worse when I turn off the system and it rumbles to a stop.
I would actually really like to replace the disc if I can find it cheap and I know for sure its not just going to happen again.

My disc vibrates, but the system goes normal in about 5 min.

Quick question I contacted vampirism and not really digging it. I was going to deal with it because the quest I saw in walkthroughs seemed too difficult. But someone at work today mentioned one of the extra content download gets you an easy fix for it. Which download has this?

You mean you can download a cure? Do you know how far I had to go for soul gems? Now I kinda feel like a badass though.
In a side note related to vampirism: Early in the game I contracted the disease and spent two weeks getting all the goods for that old' wench. I also had some dealings with the Count of Skingrad. Anywho, I got the cure for myself and the Count. Now, later in the game, I joined the Dark Brotherhood and the Leader (Name?) mentioned the count again. That is where I quit last night. I was wondering if there is yet another vampire mission or what?
Finally, in regards to scratchy discs, I don't know if I have them but I can definately report a few lockups and freezes here and there while playing the game. Not only that, but slowdown while outside is a total bitch. I kinda ruins the beauty of the game for me at times.

I have yet to play it, but
I believe the count is a vampire from what I read on the wiki and the Dark Brotherhood will offer the opportunity to become a vampire though if you were already a vampire you cannot become one again.

News on an opcoming Expansion Pack:
The first solid details from the upcoming Oblivion full expansion hit the newsstands today in the latest issue of PC Zone Magazine. The add-on will offer over 30 hours of new adventures, with new quests, monsters, a new land, and new quoest paths that branch more than before. The storyline begins when an ominous looking gate opens in Nibben Bay, a new doorway that leads to a "Torn Realm," called the Shivering Isles. The land is ruled by Sheogorath, the god of madness and dementia. When players meet this god they must go through his trials, and it is even said players may end up replacing the diety. You can expect this expansion in the second quarter of 2007, no word on how Bethesda plans to work the Xbox360/PS3 versions of the expansion.

Hopefully they deal with the Oblivion expansions like they did with Morrowind. Wait until all the PC expansions are out, and then release a discounted ($40 or so) Game of the Year edition with the base game and expansions (and maybe the DLC).

That would be sweet if they were able to port that expansion to the 360. Although, it sounds like it's going to be a lot bigger than the previous expansions, so it won't be a tidy little 200 or 300 meg download. And does MS think people will stomache paying 1600-2000 MS points for it?
I'd rather this be $19.99 (or however much) on a tangible disc.
RelentlessRolento
01-05-2007, 08:40 PM
Highly unlikely that it's a disk... if it is it'll just be an installation disk. Expect it to be just a marketplace download, but a package for PC players.
I personally don't mind if it's a 1 gig download since I already have a ton of 1 gig demos, but no actual full game add ons that are 1 gig.
if it is it'll just be an installation disk.
What else would it have been?
The idea of a disc isn't unbelievable, but it would put Bethesda in danger of not selling copies, as a sole purchaser can pass it on to his friends (I.E. Halo 2 map pack).

Unless they do what Koei did with the Xtreme Legends expansions. Where you have to put both discs in to access it everytime you boot it up. Annoying? Yes. But really the only way they'd be able to do the disc route. Other than making us buy the whole game again.

I think you may have stumbled onto how Oblivion is like anal sex.
I`ve got it, Oblivion is like anal sex because...
It may seem too big and Painful at first but once you bitches learn to relax, it can be quite an enjoyable experience.. and if you really get in to it you wont have to worry about having kids... too bad its for totally different reasons...
anyways just got the game a few days ago and it rocks.... well maybe thats not a good term for it ... its immense ... i had a less then legal copy of the PC version a little while ago but never completed it b4 i had to return my kickass work laptop... anyways i decided to show my respect for the company by buying a second hand 360 version which i guess is better, cause it only screws them a little ... but at least they`ll get a reach around when i get Knights of the nine...

Unfortunately...
That is the artifact I gave to Martin...
but I rarely break lock picks so I'm ok.... It is much more time consuming though, when you take the time to pick a lock right.... Life would be easier with the skeleton key....
And by the way, from my earlier post... I bought my friends copy of the game for $25 to replace my damaged disc and it works like a charm. He bought it on release and played it for 2 hours and never went back so it was in like new condition. Now I'm addicted again...

He's a journeymen in Armorer, Athletics, Block and Light Armor, and an expert in Blade. The aforementioned skills are all under Major Skills. Right now I'm using a Glass Longsword, but I've also got a Claymore of Fire and a Longsword of the Dynamo I occasionally use. So far, my problems have been as follows:
Using the enchanted weapons seems to be far too expensive to be feasible. I understand that you can cast Soul Trap on enemies to fill Soul Gems, but I don't have enough Magicka to cast Soul Trap. So that leaves me with my crappy Glass Longsword which seems like it isn't doing the job. It takes seemingly forever to take down enemies. And I seem to suck at combat, because I can't take on more than a couple enemies at a time without having to rest afterwards. Is that normal? Or do I just suck? And for what it's worth, with a shield my characters defense is 33.
I guess I'm kind of at a loss at what to do. Did I just build my character poorly or do I need better equipment? In your experiences, are melee characters less fun to play than mages or stealth-based characters?

don't worry, alot of that happened to me as well... just don't focus too much on recharging an enchanted weapon over a weapon with better damage. Personally I use shortswords or longswords since there damage and speed are good.
Best way to fix your soul trap problem is to either a) buy wizards tower and make your own custom spells to soul trap for less magic, or b) work on joining the mages guild to get acces to the university... in there you can make your own spells as well.

Very nice setup. My level 15 Dunmer Warrior/Mage is using an Elven Longsword (which I'm going to enchant), a Dwemer sheild, and the Imperial Dragon Armor from the main quest,

jfunkdpg,
If you cannot cast a Soul Trap spell because you don't have enough Magicka build up your characters Intelligence by casting low level conjuration and mysticism spells (especially mysticism try to get it to at least leave 25). The best place for low level spells is the bargain spells shop in the imperial city. Just get bound dagger for conjuration and the lowest level life detect spell for mysticism. If he has a cheap Soul Trap spell that takes less magic then the one you currently have pick that up too.
If you kept the Azura stone, recharging your enchanted weapons won't be a problem at all, otherwise you will have to use soul gems which isn't a big deal. The low level soul trap spell won't take much to cast if you get your mysticism up and bump up your characters intelligence. If your willpower was higher you'd be happier too because that determines how fast your magic refreshes.
Hope that helps you out.
P.S. By the way, you are right near the level where you will start seeing some ebony and daedric weapons and armor, which are more powerful than glass. So don't be discouraged if you cannot use enchanted weapons.

I'm deep in the clutches of Oblivion right now and I wanted to see what other folks have fun doing besides the quests or dungeons...
My favorite activities...
- Horseback Riding (Barbie Horse Adventures!!) from town to town....sometimes trailing a bear or mountain lion behind me and trying to get an Imperial to kill it for me. Even better if other characters ride with me!
- Bare-knuckle boxing in the Arena. I love to knock down some dude coming at me with a big-ass sword.
- Betting at the Arena was fun but I wish you could bet more than 100. I would love to see Bethesda make a whole handicapping mini game out of this, let me know about the warriors before I bet on them!
- walking through the forest, picking flowers
- diving and looking for underwater secrets
(is there another thread on this?)

The only two I say you should definitely get are Mehrune's Razor and Knights of the Nine. They add lengthy quests. Then you can grab one of the lairs for whatever type of character you have. Like if you use a lot of magic I'd suggest getting Frostcrag Spire. Vampires will want the Vile Lair. Also if you use magic grab the spell tomes download.

I stumbled on the "dupe" trick entirely by accident, and I use it to great comic effect. I like duping 20 or so of those "Mother's Head" s that are from the traitor of the Dark Brotherhood's hideout and just kicking them around. Dungeon crawling gets boring, so you gotta make your own fun sometimes.

I'm a bit stuck on my game. I am tring to finish up on the Theives Guild. I just got a new fence and a new chick lizard person to report to. She said I need to fence atleast 200 gold worth of stuff and I did about 3K maybe even more. Everytime I talk to her I get the same reply. She doesn't give me a new mission or anything. Could I have an old existing mission I'm not seeing? I pop the Theives Mission up and the red arrows lead me right to the Lizard lady and my lizard fence.
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If this is truly 30 hours I may bite, but for $30 it better damn well come close to doubling the land area of the original game. When asked how Oblivion fans who don't have Xbox Live could get the Shivering Isles expansion pack, Nesmith admitted that they were working on a retail version.
Segway into admitted retail version:
According to Nesmith, there will be a new special edition of Oblivion available at retail that will include all of the previously released content including the new Shivering Isles expansion. He also went on to say that there will be more downloadable content for Oblivion in the near future.
Then the blog, who interprets the same way I do, gives the reader two choices:
So, does this sway your decision to download Shivering Isles by just selling your current copy of Oblivion and purchasing the new special edition when it releases? Or are you happy with downloading the expansion and having it stored on your hard drive?

With the latest expansion, they're closing in on $60 of additional content having been added to the game:

Thieves Den: 150 Pts
Wizard's Tower: 150 Pts

If they bundle all that in plus another expansion that's sure to come out before the end of the years for $100, it'll kinda look like a bargain to people like me who've been holding off on a purchase, and will also be at a pricepoint that won't offend the tens of thousands of current players who've already sunk their money down for the d/l's.

Cleaned the disc, cleared patches, and still nothing. Might have to call and see if Rhino still honors the lifetime warranty with receipt now that they are GS..
edit: Well apparently randomly filling your cache with other stuff fixes the problem. Played a few other 360 games and now it loads fine..go figure.

I went back to my game to finish up the Thieves Guild stuff and get all 1000 achievements. Total play time: 185+ hours. I was surprised it took me a while to get reaccustomed to the controls, but it had been about 8 monhts since I last played.

30+ hours for ~30bucks(less with deals and such) is pretty good for a console game. It's heavy for DLC, but pretty fair for a full fledged expansion pack.

So yup, you're right.
Just played it for a few hours, and been having fun. I started forging my madness armor, and it looks damn cool. I hope I can find the sword matrix soon. Hopefully it'll be more powerful than Umbra. From reviews I read it's more like 18 Hours, and often times I find myself chugging through things faster than that. Like knights of the Nine did not take 10 hours for sure. That's why i'm a bit skeptical. Also all the dungeons in all the expansions pretty much have looked the same which really bugs me. Don't get me wrong, I love oblivion and played it to death, but after awhile the dungeons get so repetitive and the environments feel stale.
Now my question is if the environments in shivering isles are actually quite different looking or are they just redesigned dungeons like we saw in all the other packs like knights of the nine?

I downloaded this and now have been trying to boot it up. However, I'm stuck at the title screen with a window up that says "Loading extra content. Please wait." It was like that for a good 20 minutes. Figuring it was locked up, I turned off the 360 and restarted. Now it's back stuck on that screen. Any advice?
With no Live for the near future and me leaving for several days on Wednesday, I'm already pressed for time to review this beast. I really don't want to have to delete that big ol' file, but I also don't want to lose my 185 hours of play time on my saves.
EDIT: I cleared my cache and it worked. Here's how to do it, should you encounter the same problem: Go to the system blade and then memory. Press Y on the HDD, then press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X. Once you do this a blade will pop up saying: This will perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices. Do you want to continue? Pick yes or no.
EDIT 2: Okay, the game works now, but I don't think it's recognizing SI. The Download section is grayed out under Options, and I waited about 5 in-game "days" for SI to start, which it didn't.

Well you have a tiny problem. From experience, DLC seems to require one of the patches, which have all been cleared by clearing your cache. So you have to wait for live to go back online to get the latest patch, then it will recognize all your DLC again. If you happen to have any content already (mehrunes razor, etc.) and you have an item from it, DO NOT save as you will lose the items once you get things working.

You sound just like my contact at Bethesda who called me after I emailed him about it! Apparently, Microsoft jumped the gun by putting the game up yesterday. As I hadn't played Oblivion since the new patch went up, I was unable to get SI to work. easiest way(without having to time pressing a button with the game loading) is:
at the dashboard go to the system blade > memory. highlight your hdd and press Y.
Then press the following code in. X X Left Bumper Right Bumper X X. It will ask you if you want to clear the cache , choose yes. All this does basically is delete all the patches and temp stuff. Any DLC and saves will not be harmed at all. Load times may be a bit longer at first, while it recaches things.

Anyway i put on "the cowl" and knocked him accross the room with a heavy swing. When he regained consciousness the pathing reset. I tried this after waiting, coming back a few days later, rebooting, etc.

Does anyone have a link to a FAQ or webpage describing the "leveling trick" people use to get the maximum +5 for each skill?
Apossum
04-18-2007, 11:53 AM
Here's an explanation from another forum Myke:
Its based on what skills you raised between the two levels. Each skill is goverened by one of the attributes. Blade is strenght, Conjuration is intelligence, sneak is agility, etc. Each time you raise a skill it increases the ammount that the governing attribute will be raised should you select it at level up. So if you want to get your intelligence higher in the next level up, raise the skills goverened by it mulitple times. I'm not sure how many it takes, but I think its +2 for the first and second skill for an attribute. Each skill raised for the attribute then adds an additional +1 up to +5. And non major skills are factored as well, so its not just the major skills that are monitored for skill raises. And if you don't level up right away, it continutes to monitor what skills are being used during the next 10 major skill increases. So if you raise your major skills 20 times between sleeping you would then raise 2 levels and the game would have kept track what skills you used during the 11-20 skills.
not sure if that's entirely accurate. I just level up skills and never sleep in the game, then when I do level up, I should get 5s.
mykevermin
04-18-2007, 11:59 AM
Thanks. I figured it would be something like that. I don't believe that you level up more than once if you sleep one time, so something in that quote may be inaccurate (or I'm a dolt).
lordxixor101
04-18-2007, 12:31 PM
Apossum,
I'm not sure your right here. I have leveled up two-three levels consecutively before. I didn't get all 5's. It depends what you leveled up between those 10 primary skill level ups that matter.
I had some times where I could gain a 3 in strength, then gain another 3 in strength the next level up, as opposed to getting a 5.
I'm also not sure why everyone avoids leveling up. I like the stronger enemies. Early on, they can be a bit tough, but it's never so bad that it ruins the game (and most of the time you should be able to run away).

Early on, they can be a bit tough, but it's never so bad that it ruins the game (and most of the time you should be able to run away).
i just copied and pasted someone else's response, but i thought it sounded plausible...I underlevelled to make sure I'm always strong enough and to make sure I get all the best equipment at each level.
speaking of which, I need to get my fix of oblivi-crack before class now :)

Finally, the patch!
(I just hope it doesn't get rid of the new dupe method that was found)

Pete Hines casually mentioned releasing a super edition of Oblivion containing everything down the road. But nothing serious. The general vibe given by Bethesda has been "marketplace only"

Grr.. I'm not a big fan of this digital download bs. I want physical objects for games.

Shivering Isles on Disc!!!
ife is good for fans of massive fantasy worlds who haven't yet found time to see what the whole internet craze was about. Not only will The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year edition be released next week on 360 and PC, but next month you'll be able to buy a standalone disc containing the Shivering Isles expansion along with the Knights of the Nine DLC. The disc will retail for $29.99, a $10 savings over those who bought the packs through Xbox Live.
But take note of that "Storage Required" sticker on the box, you still need to have a hard drive for the expansions to live on. Those of you rocking the Core systems are unfortunately still out of luck.

The question is, will the discs have some kind of DRM that prevents using them to install the expansions on multiple systems?

kinda sucks since i bought knights of the nine, but i haven't picked up shivering isles yet, so i'll probably buy this. the whole spending 20+ bucks on DLC thing scared me away.

Is there really that much content to justify a 30$ price tag? When I hear expansion, I think maybe a couple more hours worth of content. To me, a few hours is not worth 30$
For those of you who have played it, what price would you say it becomes a worth the money? $10? $20?

Hmm, so if you can unload a regular version for more than $20, you're guaranteed to come out ahead even before finding a deal on the GOTY. Interesting.

The "Storage Required" icon has a picture of both a hard drive and a memory card on it. If they really do plan to require the hard drive they need to come up with a better method of making that known.

I'd say Shivering Isles alone is worth the $30. I spent about 15-20 hours and I enjoyed the main quest much more than Oblivion, which I loved. I hear Knights of the Nine is about 10 hours long on it's own, so there's a good amount of content there.

I just want to know if you can use your previous save from the regular edition and use it in the GOTY edition.
The game plus Knights of The Nine and Shivering isles for $49.99
Is that brand new info? Everything I've seen indicates a rather sucky $59.99 price for it. I have it preordered at GC and that's what they have it for. I just checked EB and they have $59.99 also ($49.99 for PC though).
$49.99 would be really nice, but unless you have some brand new breaking news on that, I'm not expecting it to be that price. I'm only going to get it at that price because of the rumors of GC's (or, more appropriately Movie Gallery's) problems. I have a bunch of credit to burn there and don't want to lose it.

I guess I'm mistaken, I could have sworn I saw it listed somewhere for $49.99

Damn...$59.99 seems steep for an old game with DLC.

Wow that is a lot more then I thought it would be. I guess I am use to pc xpacks that only add a few more hours to the main game.
I think that may go on my "to buy" list eventually. Thanks!

I guess it's time to sell off my original edition.
Well the GOTY is out and according to people on gamefaqs, it is just the regular edition on 1 disc, and the expansion on another disc that can be copy to the HDD. It also looks like you can install the expansion multiple times.

Well, if that's trun it sucks. I was planning on saving my HD space. Plus I passed on the used Oblivion for $17 deal at EB games because I was waiting on this. Fuck.
I hope that info is wrong...
