Well, if that's trun it sucks. I was planning on saving my HD space. Plus I passed on the used Oblivion for $17 deal at EB games because I was waiting on this. Fuck.
I hope that info is wrong...
nope it is 2 disc

Well the GOTY is out and according to people on gamefaqs, it is just the regular edition on 1 disc, and the expansion on another disc that can be copy to the HDD. It also looks like you can install the expansion multiple times.

Well, that's interesting. It is kind of lame that it wasn't worked into the game. But that might have meant the game would have gone over 1 disc, and since this game isn't linear that would probably be too much of a pain.

I like that it installs to the HD. So it is sort of nice in that you get the DLC but have a disc to up the trade/sale value later if you want to get rid of it. On the other hand, this seems like a cheap approach for it to still cost $60 - the same old game on 1 disc and the DLC on a second disc. I figured a little more work would have gone into it...

But knowing this I am tempted to just get the plain version and wait on cheaper DLC and/or some availability of the second disc (either used or after price drop). I need to think this over a bit... In the mean time I have a Gamecrazy preorder for this to pick up. I may just let that sit a few more days...

at this point the cheapest thing to do is the buy the regular edition, rent the GOTY edition to get the DLC

How likely is it that Blockbuster/Hollywood will have the GotY edition, though? It seems like something they might not bother to carry.

Unfortunately no, it seems that the GOTY is in high demand (probably due to this topic). I got bumped to my #2 item on my queue as it wasn't in stock. I will post and update if I get it sent out to me sometime soon.

After reading GameFAQs, it sounds like you can rent the second disc and copy it to your hard drive BUT you will need the GOTY edition of Oblivion to access it.

some people on gamefaqs are saying you dont need GOTY disc

"I already own Oblivion, so could I rent the GOTY edition, install the second CD, and then send it all back and play with MY copy? Are the first discs exactly the same?

I just did this today actually. And I went to my BlockBuster and they did have it... 3 copys. @Dave, Yeah the first disks are the same. Its just the new one has a black cover. But I have tested this out and it does work. All you do is put disk 2 in and load the add on's and poof you get them. Oh I had to wait 24 hours in game, ( just use wait for 24 hours ) and then when you wake you should get a message that a door appers. Idk you may not have to wait but I did."

So, just to clear something out (for me) here.

1) Is this just Shimmering Isle and Knights of the Nine (not the other stuff like Wizards Tower).

2) Can we rent this and get the content? If so, I'll be off to Blockbuster to grab it. If not, I may just have to purchase it.

Can anyone personally confirm or deny using the second disc GOTY content with a non-GOTY copy of Oblivion? The people posting on the gamefaqs boards have very conflicting reports and I am trying to decide if I should try and pick up a cheap copy and rent the second disc, or buy the GOTY edition.

Soory for the noob question, but if I'm just starting the game, should I immediately install the second disc on the HD or wait until I progress pretty far in the game first?

Well, I was excited to find that Shivering Isle is getting it's own disc release (just saw it on an Amazon email). Still, I wonder why not release it with all of the DLC on that disc? What is the point of holding off on that content?

Also, does anyone know if another expansion pack is planned? There was 2 last time, but since they released a GOTY version of the game, I figured this last DLC might be it.

I suppose, but you're really talking about the difference between 160 and 165 hours of gameplay, y'know? I do totally understand, but only think that the smallest portion of gamers will find that they've run out of things to do in Oblivion.

I know what pisses me off: getting RROD on my 360 this week so I can't download the content during its exclusive free week. I'll have to pay for it if I want it, since Microsoft has a console with a 100% failure rate. Thanks guys!

He wouldn't even need a memory card, just someone he trusts enough with his account information. They recover on their 360 and download it so it's tied to his account, then he can redownload later.

No. It's free for a week, and will be priced after that.

First, I wanted to let you know that we are finally releasing the last piece of downloadable content we created for Oblivion. We had mentioned it a long, long time ago but we hadn’t released it, until now. Starting Monday, October 15 it will be available to download via Xbox Live (for Xbox 360) and elderscrolls.com (for PC). And, for one week, it will be free to anybody who wants to download it and play it. So mark it on your calendars and don’t forget.

Not that it'll matter, free dlc to my favorite game on the 360, I'm getting it.

I haven't had a chance to go through the entire side quest that's attached to it, but it's a nice castle as far as I understand. It's northwest from the first abbey/monestary place you visit in the main quest.

You fend off maurader's and then take the castle. Then you get the joy of repaying the debt. I wonder what'll happen when I do... so that's the next "to do" item for me.

Oh, right, after I close the gate of Oblivion.

Because Blockbuster changed their rental policy for games to like $.99 a day recently.

To me it sounds like the content is on a second disc and you just install it from there. I'm guessing the first disc is the regular Oblivion game or one that is enhanced with better framerate/gameplay.

I can confirm that the 2nd disc of the GOTY will work with the original copy of Oblivion. I just downloaded Shivering Isles from the 2nd disc and it works fine with my original copy the game. I rented from Gamefly. It copies the expansions to your hard drive as if you downloaded them from the marketplace, kind of like the Halo 2 map pack disc.

Get the regular edition, rent the GotY edition, download the content, return the GotY edition.

This was my plan but no one rents the GotY edition anywhere around here (not Hollywood or Blockbuster, anyway, and I don't want to sign up for Gamefly just for this - all my HV and BB rentals are free now).

So now I've ended up just not getting any version. It is funny, this is THE game I wanted to get a 360 for but now I just can't get myself to shell out for it though I've bought plenty of other games for nearly the same price. Now I'm going to probably wait for a price drop on the GotY edition. I just know I'll sink countless hours into this and it will render all my other games useless so I have no problem waiting ;).

By the way, there is the ultimate compliment for Oblivion in the new Simpsons Game: At the end you confront God (and do a DDR style dance-off to "Rock You Like a Hurricane"). Afterwards Bart gets a hold of God's memory card and uses it as a bargaining chip. The reason God wants it back: he's on the final boss in Oblivion and doesn't want to have to start all over again. ;)

I am making a christmas list, and since most people spend 20-40 on me i thought maybe i could get the 30 dollar Oblivion and use some of my 4,600 MS points on the rest that comes with the game of the year edition. But as i look at the things you can add to this game, Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine are for sure locks. But thats 3,100 points right there! Thats almost 40 extra dollars right there. So GOTY edition seems the right choice. But does that game come with the small extras like Spell Tomes, or The Vile Lair? One more thing to ask, if i did get the 30 dollar oblivion, could i rent the GOTY edition and use it to save the extra content onto my hard drive? I am not sure how that works.

thanks for any advice.

GOTY = better deal as its not on the Hard Drive taking up valuable space.

Not sure if it comes with the crappy extras.

You could NOT save the extra content to the HD. It doesn't work like that.
The data streams off the disc so there is no practical way worth trying that would equal success.

Hope I helped, haha!

So do you even have the game? Even with the GOTY version you can only copy the content to the HDD and not play them of the disc. I am Sorry, but you dont know what you are talking about.

To actually answer the OP's question. You only get Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine on GOTY and not the other DLC. Yes you can rent borrow disc and copy the content on your HDD and return it.

So it would be better to buy the 30 dollar version, rent GOTY and get the extras for 5 bucks. Do you know how much space it takes up? I have the 20GB...errr 12GB hard drive.

Shivering Isles is 994 MB, and Knights of Nine is 142 MB. But either way, you have to save it to your harddrive, its just your choice if you want to rent the disc, buy the GOTY edition, or buy the DLC with MS Points.

Edit: Regular Oblivion is only $22.50 at CC this week; http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Elder-Scrolls-IV-Oblivion-Xbox-360-710425390135/sem/rpsm/oid/152696/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do?linkid=j13774608k31063&affiliateid=k31063&mid= .Although I still do not support CC, it is worth getting there I get.

I just picked up a used regular Oblivion since GC had the B1G1 deal (with system purchase - got the Zelda DS bundle). I was going to do the rental thing with the GotY but the big problem is that it is not available for rent at any place I've seen (several Blockbuster and Hollywood Video stores). I'll keep looking when I'm out and about but I'm not optimistic. Short of Gamefly, where can you even rent it?

But I figured I could start the regular game and wouldn't even need to get into Shivering Isles right away anyway. What other DLC do people recommend getting? I got the free one a few weeks back. So to take advantage of that do I need to be a fighter? Or is it a guild thing? Anything else you guys could recommend downloading for the start of the game?

Most of the DLC is generally geared towards various classes... the Fighter's stronghold, Frostcrag Spire (which is nice if you're a magic user) and the thieves den (IIRC)

Shivering Isles is wholly contained and doesn't influence the main quest that I can remember, so getting it later in your travels (when it's available to rent) will be fine. Horse Armor is useless.... particularly after a certain point and a horse you receive becomes your main mount...

For each of the "class specific" (for lack of a better term) areas like Frostcrag and the fighter one (name escapes me)... main advantages are geared towards the particular discipline, but there's no need to specialize... My character was a magic heavy melee fighter with good heavy armor skill (some of the heavy armor's great to use...) Frostcrag has unique features for the mages guild fellow too... like spellcrafting and enchanting of items... that assumes of course you want to go that route...

I also liked Mehrunes Razor... it's a nice quest with a good reward... Spell Tomes are good, but Frostcrag gives you more features making spell tomes obsolete.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head... I finished the main quest of Shivering Isles just last week, and that makes (off and on) Oblivion the longest I've ever played an RPG game (May until November.... heh.)

Another way to do the "rental thing" would be to pick up a used copy of the GOTY ed. from EB/Gamestop. Just be sure to return it within 7 days and you get a full refund.

Greetings, all.

I'm going to pick up Oblivion for 360.. sometime soon. My question to those of you who have either copy, is it worth the extra $40 you spend for the two extra expansion packs in the GOTY edition, or, should a person go for the Vanilla edition of Oblivion for $20 and maybe download the extra expansion areas later on?

Many thanks.

Considering how long it'll take to get through the main campaign, I'd save yourself some money and just get the base game. The expansions are already on another disc, so you can wait for a drop later.

The nice thing about Oblivion is if you get stuck in an area, just use the difficulty slider to lower it a bit for just that one section, then raise it back up again.

Yeah, there was one side quest I was stuck at (you literally were in another dimension and couldn't escape until you finished) and I was scared I would have to restart the entire game, but was able to easily get through using that method.

I remember that spot. I was stuck there for a bit too, I managed my way through it without moving the difficulty slider. Really, that might have been the only part I was really stuck on for any length.

All I know is that I did some of the side missions before even starting the main mission, so I wonder if you just need to level a bit more (I know, classic RPG answer, but even with the enemies getting stronger, I felt like I was getting stronger as the game went on).

Hmmm... I'll have to try the difficulty slider. I met up with a guy locked in a tower who gave me a key and told me to get to the top of the other tower so that's where I'm at. I can barely see in there though. Maybe I have to keep playing to "get it" or something? My in-game times says I'm at 3 hours and if a game doesn't grab me by then chances are it won't but this game is so huge and so many people like it that maybe 3 hours really isn't a fair shot...

So whats teh deal with this game, itw as GOTY in 2006? Is it an MMORPG where you pick a class and group up with other hunting parties and you can play a role within that party and go and level up and stuff like in WoW?

No, it's a single player only role playing game. The battle system is in real time (Right trigger swings sword, etc) and there is a huge land to explore and tons of quests to do.

I never finished the main quest and went and did my own thing(like probably most other people did). Great game.

Oh, it's addicting.

I've spent over 60 hours on my main character...I just got back into it because I recently got Shivering Isles (great DLC, by the way)

I can't really explain exactly why I love it so much...I guess it just has a certain charm to it that I can't get enough of. Some times I love to just drop all of my equipment/potions/etc in my house, take a hunters vest and pants, and just go hunting deer/bears/etc in the wilderness around Cyrodii with my bow. It's good fun and is generally relaxing.

I'd just make sure you finish the main quest before doing that though, I hate running into Oblivion gates while roaming around the mountains hunting game on a snowy day.

Keep trying and finish that Oblivion gate, you're almost done with it anyway. Maybe adjust your screen brightness? After you get through that part go explore and give some of the other things to do in the game a shot. Remember to rest in areas where there aren't monsters to regain health. At some of the begining levels you don't have much health, but that changes later on.

yeah, my goal was to at least close one Oblivion gate (for at least an achievement!) - is there a "boss" or something I'll find impossible to kill once I get to the top? I did like the overworld even though it seemed overwhelming when I popped out of the sewer but I've been stuck in this brown/red area for what seems like ages and it's not that fun. I also have no idea if I'm getting everything I should be getting or exploring where I should be exploring. Just in this area alone I feel like there are a bunch of doors and stuff I still have to wander into...

Anyone who has given up on this game should keep playing. I wasn't impressed until after I closed the first gate. It gets really fun when you join the different guilds. The game gets easier as you progress because you'll level up and be able to carry stronger weapons and cast stronger spells. I've been playing this game for a couple days and it's slowing growing on me.

I'm kinda stuck in the main quest though. I've closed the first Oblivion gate and went back to Savlian Matius who asked me to help him rid the city of those fire-throwing creatures. I helped him clear the area infront of the chappel and then went in to the chappel to speak with Brother Martin who refused to leave until it's safe. Then I went and opened the city gate to allow the soldiers to come in and deal with the rest of the creatures. I further help this Matius guy by bringing him a ring from some dead guy.

I head back to the Chappel to take Martin with me back to Weynon Priory but the guy isn't to be seen anywhere! The dumbass locals don't know shit about him either. Have I missed something here.. any help would be appreciated.

I'm finding the guilds part of the game very enjoyable though.

It's good to complete the Thieves guild before you do Knights of the Nine (for reasons you will see as soon as you get closer to doing the last T.G. quest.) I didn't... and it made for some annoying things to happen dialogue-wise...

If you've not finished the Mages guild quests, skip that spoiler. :)

I generally recommend you making some enchanted weaponry and armor for the main quest, because at some point you're going to encounter things that don't die from anything but daedric, silver, or enchanted weapons... and unless you're great at heavy armor, you're most likely going to benefit from a decent shield, or depending upon your weapon specialty, some great enchanted headgear, etc.

Try to carry as many feather potions as you can (or better yet, learn the spell) because when you hit some of the main quest, there'll be so much loot you will want to hock or put somewhere for safe keeping that no matter how strong your character is, he can't carry it all.. (or she).

Remember some of the conversations with NPCs and you'll discover another guild to get quests from as well (that yield a nice bonus, btw.) Dark Brotherhood

Don't know if this helps but when I first started the game, I wasn't familiar with the quest log which helps finding people. Make sure for this particular quest, it's set as the active one and he'll show up on the small compass and you can just follow it until you find him. I didn't know about this at first so I had a hard time finding people.

Other than that, not sure as I completed the game with no major problems regarding glitches like that but I wouldn't say the game is glitch free either.

by far the best stories in the game have to go with the theives guild (hardest also IMHO) and the dark brotherhood (best and most rewarding). The deadric quests are fun as well, but more worth it if you plan to do them all since they give you a huge stat boost.

Same here, but I might play Mass Effect first. I haven't even turned on my 360 in at least a week or two though . Besides playing a few Wii games with my son I haven't had time to do any gaming. It is like the "holidays" provide way LESS time for me to game than usual!

But I do want to start this eventually. I may have asked this before, but I'll restate it: I bought a used copy of the regular version since I didn't want to lay out $60 for the GotY. Besides the free fighter's guild thing I downloaded, what else would you guys suggest I get for the start of the game (ie, pay to download)? I pretty much know nothing about Oblivion, though it is the reason I wanted to get a 360. I've put in about 70 hours and all I have is the free Fighter's Stronghold, which is your own castle that you can store your stuff in without it disappearing (in the hidden section of the private quarters).

As for the best class, I don't really know because I've only played as a Breton assassin. I like it because I'm good with physical attacks and I just leveled up my restoration and destruction so now I'm good at both. Being able to sneak comes in handy too. After playing for a while you can level up to be good at anything though. You can even change your class before you leave the sewers if you find out you don't like the class you chose.

It doesn't matter which guild you do first as far as I know. Personally I went mages, fighters, thieves, then I'll do the last one Dark Brotherhood. Is this even a spoiler?. I guess the thieves guild might be easier after leveling up sneak some. It's not like once you choose a guild you can only do that one. I suggest doing a mission for each and then choose the guild you liked best.

You might want to play Mass Effect before this if you hope to play it before spring comes.

Yeah, I learned a feather spell just for that reason. :D

I've killed someone and I'm on the admittance mission. I'm just waiting until I'm done with thieves and the arena. Are there any downfalls to being in the Dark Brother hood? It seems like the Blades, fighters/mages guilds wouldn't like knowing I murder people.

I don't know this for a fact, but I have heard rumor that you can just rent the GotY edition and install Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles to your hard drive. If that's true, those are well worth it; Knights of the Nine was a solid set of quests and SI (from what I've played so far) is a great change of place from the main world of Oblivion.

I'll start it eventually, and then it will consume me. I have the strategy guide, so I've no worries about getting stuck anywhere. So...just got this yesterday from TRAINN. I chose an imperial born under the warrior. Good choice? What should I do for my class?

yeah, my goal was to at least close one Oblivion gate (for at least an achievement!) - is there a "boss" or something I'll find impossible to kill once I get to the top? I did like the overworld even though it seemed overwhelming when I popped out of the sewer but I've been stuck in this brown/red area for what seems like ages and it's not that fun. I also have no idea if I'm getting everything I should be getting or exploring where I should be exploring. Just in this area alone I feel like there are a bunch of doors and stuff I still have to wander into...

Nothing to worry about at the top. There will be some enemies there though. Don't worry too much about missing stuff in that first Oblivion gate, it's pretty much just some other similar looking rooms and hallways.

The overworld is great, but keep in mind there will be some long dungeons. Still, before moving on try out one of the guilds and explore a little. I barely touched the main quest until I was over 30 hours into the game.

I've put in about 70 hours and all I have is the free Fighter's Stronghold, which is your own castle that you can store your stuff in without it disappearing (in the hidden section of the private quarters).

I've killed someone and I'm on the admittance mission. I'm just waiting until I'm done with thieves and the arena. Are there any downfalls to being in the Dark Brother hood? It seems like the Blades, fighters/mages guilds wouldn't like knowing I murder people.

No, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why it never caught up with me. :) As long as you don't have a bounty you're okay... and the Dark Brotherhood quests are set in such a way that if you do them right, no one will know you did it... You never really kill anyone in other guilds, so the penalty for that is moot... the only penalty I saw for the Thieves guild was the last quest... but I was already the Arch Mage... so it really didn't matter. ;-) Once you finish the Dark Brotherhood, you've got a great source of income .... more quickly replenished than the fighters guild...

I love reading forums where Morrowind fans bitch and whine about things in Oblivion, like fast travel, unkillable quest NPCs, and the fact that the game has fewer books. Yeah, cause running around bland wastelands, accidentally breaking quests, and spending hours reading were really the highlights of that game.

User-friendly. Yes. That's exactly what I would call it. The quest journal, fast travel, and quest indicators make Morrowind seems hokey and obsolete. I remember very vividly having to run around for a half hour in order to find some cave that was "NE of such and such", and then I would just give up and look it up online. Now the game just tells me where the fucking Shrine of Goodoodbag is. So much smoother and more fun.

Oh, and the 360 version of Oblivion runs 10x better than Morrowind did on the original Xbox. Holy fucking shit.

So I started this game today and it's awesome...except one thing. Whenever I engage in combat if my enemy strikes me first, my character seems to glitch and I can't swing a sword, block or jump, actually I can't do anything but sit there and take it. I know this isn't the way it's supposed to be because while in the sewers it played fine. Any suggestions?

I've never seen anything like that. Maybe turn off your 360 and load it up again? I couldn't see my weapon in Half Life 2 and that worked for me.

I played this game on my PC around when it first came out. I thought it looked great on my computer, but I didn't have a 360 back then, so I had no idea how good it could've looked. ( I was playing on very low settings). I stopped playing it once my computer started to slow down.

Now, a few years later, I've got it on the 360, and I'm loving it all over again. I traded for it here on CAG, and I swore to myself that I wouldn't start playing it until this summer, because I know how this game can just steal countless hours of your day, and I need to be concentrating on school work.

I really wanted to see how much better it looked on my 360, though. So I told myself "Ok, I'm just going to get through the sewers and walk around outside for a bit just to see the graphics, then I'm shutting it off."

I played for eight hours straight.

Come on man, don't be a jerk and just let them get it for free. It's a friendship not a business!I wouldn't have bought it if they didn't come up with the idea of us each paying $10 for it. They are good friends, but we're splitting the cost between us so that it's cheap for everybody instead of one guy (which would be me in this case) paying $30 for it. It's not like I'm charging a rental fee for when I let them borrow the Orange Box. ;)

This game will suck you in pretty easily. I'm definitely doing the Dark Brotherhood and the main quest again while I'm pushing through Shivering Isles. That stuff was great.

I spent hours in Morrowind just organizing stuff in my house. I easliy spent over an hour getting my money pile just right the first time and I would add a little more to it on every return trip. It was little touches like that that made Morrowind a truly immersive experience. It was almost like being in another world. Oblivion didn't feel the same.

So, I just recently started this game (I'm now addicted), but I have a couple questions:

Has anyone played through the whole game as a vampire? Was it a pain in the ass, or were the benefits greater than the drawbacks?

I'm doing the quest to find the cure for vampirism, but I kinda like having the extra boost to my stats/abilities. I don't want to not be able to deal with shop keepers and other NPC's, though.

If I keep feeding every day or so, will I remain normal-looking?

Yes, if you keep feeding every day or 2, you'll be normal looking and it can be managed. I actually stumbled into this very early in the game, and probably played 40 of my first 45 hours of the game as a vampire. The problem is it's really more of a hassle than it's worth. Early on, the stat boost is impressive, later in the game, you really don't need it, and the hassles just get annoying.

So, it's really up to you. What isn't bad is to do the mission for vampire cure, you'll get a vile. Then, you don't have to take it right away, just hold onto it and when your sick of it, take it then.

But, it's definitely possible to have a rich fulfilling Oblivion experience as a vampire.

I finished off the Dark Brotherhood Quests, finished off the main quest, and did a good bit of the Fighter's Guild quests. Probably try to finish that and then the Mage's and Thieve's Guild questlines and then likely move on to picking up the Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles Quests.

Much less a game as long and complex (steep learning curve) as Oblivion).

It's definitely not for everyone, and I'd say it has the most flaws of any game I've enjoyed as much as I've enjoyed Oblivion thus far. But you have to give it a few hours to get used to the controls, menus, abilities, map/compass, and to take in the incredible amount of quests there are to do before you can really form a valid opinion.

Easy, if I play for ten minutes and it fails to grab my attention, why would I bother to keep playing?

Because many games, especially RPGs, start slow and it takes more than 10 minutes to grab your attention. Many games are just getting the story set up, having tutorial modes to show you the ropes.

Guess you should just stick to action games. Western RPGs are definitely not for the ADHD crowd. Nothing wrong with not liking them, but it's no much more than a thread crap to open a thread on one and say you didn't like it after only giving it 10 minutes.

Quit trolling and thread crapping. He gave you reasons, mainly being that you can't judge a game after only playing 10 minutes. You need to give it time so that you get used to the gameplay, story, etc. If you played for more than 10 minutes, say that next time, instead of thread crapping.

dmaul1114
12-15-2008, 05:51 PM
We already gave the reasons why.

It starts slow and has a steep learning curve. It takes a few hours to understand everything, and to grasp the scope of the game. There are a ton of options, the menus are a bit confusing, the map and compass system take getting used to. It just takes some time to figure everything out and really get sucked into the game.

There's no way 10 minutes can give anyone a sense of the game, it probably took me closer to 5 hours before I was fully sucked in. And I wasn't liking it much the first hour or so as the interface takes so much getting used to and the story is less linear and enthralling than in say Bioware RPGs or JRPGs.

Sorry for being an asshole, having a shitty day and I hate when people make comments about games they barely played espeically for RPGs which tend to take a few hours to get sucked into. :D

It's not a perfect game, like I said above it's probably the most flawed game I've played that I've enjoyed this much. As noted the menu's suck, weapon's degrading sucks, the map sucks, the compass sucks, there's a lot of slowdown and pop up, lots of glitches, it freezes up sometimes etc.. But at the end of the day the world is just so damn big and there's so many quests (with a lot of variety) that are so fun to do and explore that it's easy to over look the flaws.

So if you're really into western RPGs I hope you give it another shot and put some more time into it and see if you get sucked in.

Anybody have any advice on creating a character? I played this briefly for the PC, but mine couldn't really handle it, so I picked it up for the 360. I haven't gotten around to playing it, only because I remember looking at a character creation guide (so as to avoid doing anything really stupid to my character) and being completely overwhelmed. Is there any major pitfalls that I should avoid that would make playing with my character too difficult? I always like the idea of creating a stealth character, but a lot of times games have parts with unavoidable straight-up combat, and my guy becomes worthless.

dmaul1114
12-15-2008, 06:46 PM
I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it. I just new I didn't want a total stealth character (don't like sneaking around, though I have a lot) and didn't want a magic oriented character.

I ended up going with a dark elf scout, mainly because I enjoy R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Relams series so I tried to make my own Drizzt (the main character). Gave him the sign of the warrior as I wanted to be good with sword combat.

I put the difficulty 2-4 notches to the left and haven't had any problems. I wanted to just be able to explore the world and do quests, not play for any real challenge since it's really not a skill based game.

How do I access the GOTY content? How do I get to the Shivering Isles, IOW? I have the GOTY disc installed on my hdd, but dunno how to get there.
I think for the Knights of the Nine you have to seek out the Prophet, can't remember what town it is but it'll be a quest available to you in your journal (as stated above).

I don't know maybe it's just me... I played 10 minutes of the game and hated it. Returned it the same day.
Though this bothers me, I have a co-worker that said the same thing. After 3 hours he still couldn't get into it. I can understand not getting into a game (having this problem with Fallout 3), but Oblivion captured my attention.

It starts slow and has a steep learning curve. It takes a few hours to understand everything, and to grasp the scope of the game. ... There's no way 10 minutes can give anyone a sense of the game, it probably took me closer to 5 hours before I was fully sucked in.
It took me a good 5 hours as well, and once I realized you had to sleep in a bed to level up (went through 4 levels in about 2 minutes). I just love that I can build a character that I want to build. My Wood Elf is a sneaky little bastard that likes to pick people off with his bow and enrage people from the shadows (only to go invisible so the enraged attacks their own).

The game is not perfect, but it's WELL(!!!) worth the money you can pick it up for now. BTW, I'm 65 hours in and there is STILL a ton of shit left to do (that equates to less than $.50 per entertainment hour at this point).

I'm on the quest to find the band of female thieves who've luring the menfolk out out into the country and robbing them. I've spoken to Gogan's wife, and gone to the tavern to find out more. How long am I supposed to wait for these women to come and try to seduce me?

N/m: I had to speak to the Gogan dude first (I originally spoke to his wife, but that wasn't enough to trigger the females at the pub).

I've joined both the Fighter's and Mage's guilds now. It will be a while until I get back to the main campaign.

Has anyone done the Mehrune's Razor quest? Those bastards in the caves are tough!

I've really been itching to get back to this game & finish up the last couple of Thieves Guild quests I have left. I've been considering picking up a disc-based Shivering Isles, but I'm curious if I'll have any issues with buying a used copy? Is it like the Halo 2 map pack where you can do multiple installs? If nothing else, I might just pick up the GOTY edition seeing as it's about the same price. I just don't want to get rid of my collector's edition :-?

I'm still loving the shit out this game. Up to around 54 hours. I've done the main quest, dark brother hood, fighter's guild, thieve's guild and arena (along with a variety of random side quests, shrine quests etc.). Think the mage's guild is all I have left to get the full 1000 achievement points in the main game and then I'll move on to the expansions.

A tip for those who haven't done the thieve's guild quest line (and useful in general)--be sure to do the Nocturnal Shrine quest after you hit level 10 (not available until then). It gives you the skeleton key-and unbreakable lock pick which makes things much less annoying.

Yep, you can do multiple installs. And you don't' need the disc in the machine to play as you need the regular Oblivion disc (unless you installed it to your hard drive of course). It's just the DLC expansion on a disc that just installs them to your hard drive.

Yep. I owned an original copy of Oblivion (IIRC, I bought it before I ever owned a 360), and rented GOTY from GameFly. Just installed disc 2 and played the full game on my ol' original disc.

dmaul1114

Yeah, unfortunately Gamefly doesn't rent it our anymore--wanted to do a free trial to get it. I have the orignal as well as it was available right away on Goozex and the GOTY edition was on long wait.

So I'm basically renting it from another CAG and mailing it back after installing it. Wasn't going to buy it since it's still $30 even though the GOTY edition has dropped to the $30. Plus a hassle to sell it off after installing anyway since I don't want a useless disc sitting around.

I take it back - it was the Dark Brotherhood I have left to do. Whatever the last 2 ranks are & then I'll be done with the original 1000/1000.

Perhaps I'll have to look into trying to rent the GOTY edition or picking up a used copy of the Shivering Isles disc during the next GS B2G1.

Finished the Mage's Guild last night and got the 1000 achievement points for the main game--only game I've gotten 1000 on.

I love how the achievements were just all tied to the main quests and the major sidequests. No tedious crap of having to replay the game, kill X number of monsters, no collecting crap, etc.

Perfect way to do it in this game as it gives motivation to spend the time doing all the major quest lines. Unlike Mass Effect where you have to play several times to get all the Ally achievements, weapons achievements etc.

Great game, and can't wait to get on to Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles.

Yeah, I loved the game but would never even try for all the achievements. I would like to get back to it and play it through once more though. Just use the same character and play as a bad guy. Would get some more points since I could play on hard, get the level 60 cap, get the two ally achievements I didn't my first time etc.

And I'm definitely getting Shivering Isles, will have it early next week in fact.

Yeah, I knew that, but I wasn't sure if there was still a recommended level. For example, the solider(s) that fight with you in Kvatch will almost always die immediately at the higher levels, but if you do that quest at lower levels, you can actually get them to survive.

I haven't played this game in ages, what a time waster lol. Glad I'm on break, one reason I wouldn't play this during classes was the affect it'd have on my school work. Just got to the Cloud Nine Temple place, had already done that part but on PC before.

Yeah, requiring a person to play through a game a minimum of 3 times just to get all 1000 is overkill. I started using the two characters I wanted to stick with for the ally achievements too late into the game, so I didn't unlock them during my first play through. That would push me up to having to play through the game 4 damn times to unlock everything.

Thanks for that. I'll do the Thieves' after I finish either Mages' or Fighters' first. I suck at picking locks. If I buy a "open hard lock" spell, I should be able to use it to open locks at lower levels, correct?

Im about to start Oblivion tonight, but i am wondering what race is the best to use? Also if anyone has any advice to give me before i start playing, it would be great. Like is magic better, more fun to use compared to melee combat. Whats more effective? What attributes are the best to get?

Also i have shivering Isles from the GOTY game, i suppose i wont even use that disc until i finish the first disc correct?

I don't necessarily think one race is better than the others but I may be mistaken. I've used this site so many times, its very useful:http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion
Check out their in depth guides on the home page. I have Shivering Isles but I haven't gotten far enough in the main game, keep just fooling around or doing side quests, to feel the need to try the Shivering Isles quests.

The cool thing about SI is that you can start it pretty much any time after you reach a certain level (Can't remember what it is though) though Kot9 requires you to have done something to make you famous which can get done in about an hour of play.

I'd say playing the vanilla game (Which it obviously is, being the 360 version) magic is the way to go. Destruction is the basic fire and lightning stuff so that's a must have, and restoration to heal yourself. Beyond that get anything you want. If you do go magic, Breton works well. Dark Elf is good for hybrid classes though if you don't feel content with any one choice.

I played as Breton and Dark Elf races, I agree they're two of the better ones. Some advice: save the immediately before leaving the starting cave, as when you leave you have the option to change anything about your character. So, you can mess around in the starting cave/prison, then decide you want to be melee focus, for example, and change things around. Other recommendations - watch your leveling, this is not a game you should try and power level through, as the way enemies' levels scale, you could get in trouble quick. And the guild quests, of which there are many, are probably the best part of the game. Magic is an excellent way to go, I found archery fairly ineffective unless I was using stealth attacks. Last tip: I didn't enjoy how dark the caves were, and found a solution online - there's a night vision helmet you can get at any point in the game, it made exploring more enjoyable.

I don't think you will ever get stuck in the game with a poor character since you can adjust the difficulty at any time mid-game. There were a few parts for me that seemed impossible to get through, I lowered the difficulty, finished that part and put the difficulty back up to where it was.

I'd really encourage playing the type of character you want and not trying to min/max to create the most powerful thing out there.

Well part of the reason I suggested magic is that if you realize that isn't the class you like you can just learn fortify skills to assist you in leveling said skills. Worst case you come out with the ability to heal yourself which is indespensible

If you're anything like me the best thing you can do to enhance the Oblivion experience is to remove the Oblivion disk, insert Fallout 3 and enjoy!

For some reason I just couldn't get into Oblivion (I got out of the sewer and that was about it for me) but I'm 12 hours into Fallout 3 in about 2 weeks time. OT...I know, but that was my two cents.

I made a Breton with Theft sign with Spellsword class. So far its alright. I have a ton of stuff that id like to sell but i dunno where to sell it. Its funny cos i once was carrying too much stuff, and i couldnt move. I must have missed the message saying i had too much stuff because i thought it was a glitch and loaded a previous save to where i start leaving the jail. LOL. Right now i have to go find this dudes son. I hope i enjoy the game, because so many people say its good. Its just that sometimes story driven games can go in one ear and out the other for me, and i dont remember half the story, or people names and other stuff. Oh, and thanks for the help.

I also strongly recommend the Oblivion Wiki that others have mentioned. I have it bookmarked at home.:D

Oblivion has a weird system of giving quest rewards by your level. Certain abilities can only be obtained if you complete the quest at a high enough level (and once you complete it you cannot do the quest again). If this matters to you, might want to look up on an FAQ site to figure out the rewards for the quest before completing it. Also, make sure to hook up with the assassin guild - they have some great quests!

And for water-breathing, there are potions, scrolls and other wearable items that allow you to breath under water. I found a sweet helmet the other day.

I look at my ratings and they are both in red. Are these going to go away after a set time and go back to normal?

Ive been playing the crap out of this so far.

My strength still hasnt gone back to normal, i think it may be in illness and need a cure. Ya think? Ive spent like 7 days in jail + more time on top of that and its still not back to normal.

I think ive mainly been doing side missions. Ive only locked 1 gate, found 2 more but didnt attempt to lock those. I like to walk/ride my way around, unless ive been to a place before, then i will warp to it.

Im trying to figure out how to level up more. Right now im just doing it naturally as it comes to me. But i cant do any speechcraft because it says im maxed, and wont let me play that little game.

EDIT, i guess my speechcraft was maxed out because you can only talk to someone for so long. Then i can talk to others and play the mini game.

The condition of your weapon is still at 98% health. You can use it 11 more times before the charge completely runs out. You'll have to use soul gems to recharge, and get it fixed by someone who fixes armor.
