Five more titles en route to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade; Xbox 360 titles include Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Paperboy.

LOS ANGELES--The success of Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade has been a surprise to gamers, publishers, and developers alike. In addition to new games specific for the service, such as Geometry Wars Retro Evolved and remakes of PC games such as Zuma, Crystal Quest, and Bejeweled 2, classic arcade games are getting a second shot at life in the homes of Xbox 360 owners.
The largest contributor of old-school quarter-drainers to Xbox Live Arcade is Midway Games. The publisher has released four games for the service: Joust, Gauntlet, Smash TV, and Robotron: 2084. That quartet is getting joined by a quintet of games this year, Midway revealed at its press event in Los Angeles yesterday.

Defender, the futuristic side-scrolling shooter and one of the most recognizable games from the arcades, will make its debut on next-gen consoles more than 25 years after it first appeared in arcades.

Also out on a new route is the 1984 hit Paperboy, the surprisingly challenging game that puts players in the seemingly mundane role of an everyday newspaper delivery boy.

Gamers will then be able to go from slinging papers to slinging drinks by downloading Root Beer Tapper. Doing their best Sam Malone impression, gamers are tasked with delivering sarsaparilla and other libations to needy, parched customers.

Fighting fans familiar with Midway can thank the publisher for one of the genre's most recognizable catchphrases--"Finish him!"--by downloading Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Though Mortal Kombat creative director Ed Boon clearly implied that the franchise will one day appear on next-gen systems, gamers can get a head start on the spine-pulling, head-popping action of the franchise with UMK3.

Gamers who think that the next-gen player models in Madden NFL 06 look stiff and robotic haven't seen anything yet. Cyberball, the futuristic football game featuring machines in lieu of humans, will also be headed to Xbox Live Arcade.

"We've been generally surprised by the response rate...the paid downloads are more than we expected," Midway CEO David Zucker told GameSpot. "It's not going to change our economic success overnight, but it's a nice little business on the side, and we're glad that people are happy with the product." Midway's chief executive also expressed interest in doing similar projects with the PlayStation 3 and Revolution, should they provide that functionality.
Though all five of the upcoming Midway Xbox Live Arcade games are expected this year, the company has not released specific release dates or prices.

Not buying UMK3 unless you can play online with it.

May get Paperboy, UMK3, or Cyberball depending on the reviews.

Defender and Root-Beer Tapper = bad ideas.

Too lame and too short.

Why would they release an Xbox Live Arcade version of it WITHOUT online play? That's the ONLY reason they are releasing it.

Those games are best saved for a bit of game hustling around the Ultracades at local Dave and Busters. Wait until a few older men hit the machine, watch them down seven beers apiece, then stroll up to the machine and jump in.

Ahhhh...alcohol + idiotic bets = hilarity.

Nice to see UMK3, but I don't get why they wouldn't do MK Trilogy instead. Same game with more characters/backgrounds. Still nice to see I suppose.

Isn't Street Fighter going to be on live?

Oh please let this and MK be playable over the net (sure/hopefully they will)

Also, is there anywhere that announces release dates for XBLA games?

I'm ready for some Mortal Kombat action.

I dunno about Paperboy, though... that shit's a little on the "it's-so-old-and-didn't-age-well-that-it's-unplayable" side. That and Root Beer Tapper.

As far as I know, there haven't been any arcade perfect ports of any MK game to date. Hopefully with Live, they'll be able to bang one out or at least patch the issues after release.

Oh and Midway, way to whore out the back catalog.

I wonder how much they will charge...since these are basically just the Midway Arcade Treasures disc.

omg umk3!!!!!! now i want a 360 lollol, that's the same reaction I had. I'm already doing research on buying a 360. :D I'll pull the trigger once I get confirmation that they don't screw this up.

What's the track record so far with multiplayer Live Arcade games having netplay? Have there been any multiplayer games that are offline only? As others have said, it would be truly worthless to bring over MK without netplay.

All of the Midway games on XBLA so far have had online Multiplayer (Joust, Gauntlet, Robotron, SmashTV). I think it's safe to say that MK will have it as well.

These are early 90's arcade games, why would they expect people to pay money for them WITHOUT online play.

I guarantee MK3 has online play, same as Street Fighter 2. And they will be fine on the 360, the 360's D-Pad is excellent.

the 360's D-Pad is excellent.

haha, funniest thing I've read all day.

I'm hoping custom arcade sticks can be made using the usb ports.

If not, I guess I'll have to get the DoA4 stick.

And they will be fine on the 360, the 360's D-Pad is excellent.I think the 360 controller is great, but for certain games (UMK3) I just generally prefer a joystick over a gamepad. With an arcade stick I can keep my thumb on the run button, use my pinky for LK charge moves, and have the rest of my hand free for autocombos and all that. I would suck at UMK3 with a gamepad, having to use my thumb for all the attack buttons would just be too drastic of an adjustment for me.

I agree. They need to release MK1 and MK2 on live aracde I am not a big fan of the run button and combo system of UMK3, but that does not mean I will not purchase it.

Paperboy, Defender, and Root Beer Tapper are all excellent games. That said, I'm not going to be buying them on Live. They're not co-op in any way. Are they going to have a 2 player alternating mode on Live? I just don't get the appeal of these particular choices for an online format.

I do wish they'd gone with MK2, also.
