I can see this game being really... intense, I guess. Intense in the context of how crazy Street Fighter can get once you've mastered it. Just one of those intense niche titles that you have to train with.

I don't know if I'm for it, though. I hated playing table tennis back in high school gym class.

It'd be more appropriate if Rockstar made a wild-ass dodgeball title. Then again, I think that's included in Bully (which I can't fuckin' wait for).

Also, that female player is really a hooker.

Rockstar is talented enough that if they wanted to make a good sports game, they could.

But to me this just looks like a "let's make a game that nobody else has really attempted yet" move. There's a reason there aren't many (or any, for that matter) table tennis games out there. Nobody wants to play them.

But hey, Rockstar could prove me wrong. I hope they do.

DomLando

They also said oh well its ony $39.99. To me thats still to much for a realistic version of pong. I like innovation and Im not complaining about that but its not a game that should have any hype. Its table tennis.

Yes it is table tennis but no one can deny that graphically and gameplay wise it looks really, really good. I can't believe they made a table tennis game either but it does look like it would be fun to play. If only it cost the price of one of those arcade games, that would be great.

I think its good that they have an original idea....but original ideas arent always good. Graphics wise it does look good but I mean there really isn't that much going on in Table Tennis so that is expected. Gameplay wise you still dont know how its going to play. ^ Not much going on in table tennis? Have you ever seen high level table tennis?? Slices, loops, power shots, drop shots, on and on, at a high level it gets crazy, especially with how fast-paced everything is.

CAGcast I think said there was only one asian out of 12? Thats a little wonky. There should at least be 2 or 3 Chinese guys, maybe one from Taiwan, plus a Korean or something.

To me thats still not a whole lot of gameplay. I think it might be a fun arcade like experience but just not for the price they will offer it for. I also disagree about it being like Virtua Tennis. It will be totally diffrent. To me you just cant have that much variety in a Table Tennis game.

You just dont have the strategy of drop shots and lob shots in table tennis either. Im not saying Table Tennis is easy or thee is no skill but variety wise I just dont see it being a game I can play and have a diffrent experience with a lot. It might be good...and I will give it a shot when it comes out (because i do have a tabel and play in real life) but as a video game I just dont think it will be that great.

I'm sure we're not getting 'just' a table tennis game. Most other sports games add depth to the original concept of the sports, especially things that can't be easily done in real life. I've played table tennis since I was a kid, so I know there is more than just hitting the ball to the other side of the table, much like tennis, just on a smaller and faster scale. Plus this sets up for a lot of possible mini games. The only thing I'm concerned with is how much control we'll have on the player's hitting style. There's lots of different ways to hit the ball that requires different arm movements and precision of strength in real life. I mean, we have volleyball, pool, surfing, bowling, golf... so why not table tennis too? If Rockstar does it right, it could have potential to be good.

I'm curious. I think this is a decent idea from rockstar, at least from a business perspective. You put together something with simple, fun gameplay. Make the graphics incredible. Then drop it at a "budget" price at a time when the market for 360 games is pretty much chomping at the bit for new stuff and nothing is coming. I just don't consider $40 a budget title. If Best Buy ends up with it for $30, I'll probably use a GGC and nab it for $25. No Fry's around me to pm...

Don't underestimate simplicity. Geometry Wars reminded me of that. This could be a great time on-line, and I can see some long volleys getting very fast and very intense. I'm certainly not sold, but I'm looking forward to some reviews.

I just completed the tutorial mode.

The controls are insanely deep, tight and intuitive -- and I think that's the most important part (and where Top Spin 2 fucking failed; why didn't that have a tutorial?). The graphics blew my ass away, too.

After completing the tutorial, 100%, I played an exhibition match. It gets very intense as the ball as whacked back and forth, faster and faster. I lost, but it was a hopeless loss.

The learning curve is, probably 30 - 45 minutes; it'll take some time to master what you've learned, though.

I think everything is pitch-perfect. Very impressed.

As for the music note, I had to type it in at Xbox.com. I copied the music note off of the Character Map (Start > System Tools > Character Map). ;)

I got this from Fry's ($29!!!) and I echo these sentiments...first impressions is that this game is brilliant. I reserve my final thoughts for until I've played multiplayer, but I think this game is at least on the level with virtua tennis in terms of fun-factor, control, and depth (probably more deeper). as a single-player game, it's underwhelming. As a whole package, it's disappointing. There are no extras here. There is no career mode, no mini-games, no doubles games (and we understand why). As a game design it's clearly simple and lean, and while that was the point, you can finish this game in a mere two hours. It's just too short and lean for our tastes.

I don't care about the single player, because I already put in a good 20+ hours into the Top Spin 2 career mode and personally I wanna jump online and go with max stats. The question being is how is the online mode? Rankings and what not is it better then Top Spin 2 and how?

I agree that $40 does sound steep for this game which is why I'm waiting for a sale or $20 down the road depending on the reviews and online impressions over time.

My friend picked it up today. The single player is terrible and as stated there is no career mode which makes me not want to pay $40 for this. BUT...the game has surprised me big time. I was very skeptical about this game. For one, it looks amazing (and it should.) Characther models are very nice, looks great in HD. The game is very deep which is great. I didn't think Rockstar could pull off making a deep Table Tennis game but they did. Live is where this game is at it's best. If you want a great multiplayer game this is it. To me because the single player is so lacking I'm probably going to wait for a drop.

I think his point was that your "review" is worthless, as you didn't give any apparent reasons for thinking it should be 800 points (aside from the underlying "lololo itz ping pong gayz" aura) -- which would lead one to believe you haven't played it, which would, could and should create an educated opinion on the game...

For anyone that's played:

Does this game support 2 player within the same X360?

Yes 2 player on the same box. ie against each other.

There are no doubles matches. So if your thinking Topspin 2 no it does not have 2 players on 1 box online.

My take. Very fun Game. Addicting. Once you start getting a high numbered Rally (# times ball hit back and forth by players) the game gets insane with the music and slo-mo and stuff!

I like this much better than my Top-Spin2 purchase. As said before Controls are deep and really well thought out.

I played some two player with a friend who has the game and it is really fun, if you've got someone right there playing against you. I don't think online would be as fun, because I don't see the (rockstar) community being real curteous or playing nice.

This has a fight night Rd3 feel to it.. real fun in multiplayer.. so so in single.

I'll pick up the sequel when they add Virtua Tennis type minigames, a career mode, and create a player. Until then I'll be loving the multiplayer on my friend's 360.

Indeed, Table Tennis is pretty good. But it's (obviously) also a lot more like Pong than the real sport: fun in five-minute intervals, but can't sustain itself over any real stretch of time. In that respect, the game isn't much different from any given Live Arcade title. So why are we paying forty bucks? Oh, right. The name: Rockstar

Ummm, I haven't seen ANYTHING from you in this thread of substance, other than one-liners and quotes from ign/yahoo (in which case, they are neither original, informed, nor valid). Why let ign/yahoo speak for you? I don't need them (or anybody for that matter) to tell me whether a game is good or not...I actually decide for myself! Also, I NEVER judge a game based on price...once I've bought it (AFTER doing my due diligence and actually RESEARCHING the title), that money's gone and I judge whether or not it's worth keeping based on it's own merits, not on how much I paid for it (that's just me, though...if money is tight for you, then YMMV). :)

Anyways, we get it: you don't think this is game is worth $40, even though you went ahead and bought it anyways. If you're not enjoying it, then sell/trade it and move on from this thread...you won't be missed.

***MORE IMPRESSIONS***

After some extended online play, I'm ready to annoint this as the 360 sports game of the year so far. It's every bit as enjoyable as virtua tennis (which I love), except it's faster, has better graphics/sound, deeper controls/gameplay, and has an online interface that is tailored to really minimize quitters, in my experiences (a timed, round-robin format that is quick to get into, short, and let's you play a variety of opponents).

What makes this one a classic for me is how simple it is to learn, but how seemingly difficult it's gonna be to master: so many nuances to learn about the sport (what spin do I use? how should I counter this shot? is my opponent strong with their forehand or backhand?), so many skills utilized while you're playing (your reflexes get a workout, your mental-toughness is tested during long rally's), and enough random events to keep you on your toes (shots trickling just over the net, or nicking the side of the table). There's a definite learning curve with this one, but it's rewarding rather than frustrating...and best of all, FUN!

I'm also semi-glad that there's no create a player...the last thing this game needs is for the online portion to turn into a "battle of the maxed-out players". I LOVE the character designs (thank you rockstar for not going the DOA route and giving us supermodel-bimbos!). I've unlocked most of the characters, and there's a good balance to choose from, with no one "superior" character that everyone can cheese with. It really reminds me of SF2 in a way: a mano-y-mano fighting game (albeit, in a ping-pong setting) with a great variety of "fighters" to choose from, each with their own styles and strengths/weaknesses to exploit.

I highly recommend this title for sports fans, tennis fans, table tennis fans, virtua tennis/topspin fans, and even fighting fans(!)...at $40 it's a bargain and at $30 (the price I got it for from Fry's) it's a steal. See you guys online!

I didn't refute anything you said? Ok.

That's a pretty good copout of being called out and proved wrong, 100%. I've used it before... in second grade. Further more, every "argument" (and they're not arguments; they're ignorant, defensive commentaries pertaining nothing to you opinions on the game, but your opinions and commentaries on LinkinPrime and myself). So, in the "argument" of your "review", you won just as much as I did... after all, there never was an argument with your review or opinions on the game at the core of any verbal skirmish. Shadowbox much?

The bittersweet irony of you attacking peoples' reading and comprehension keeps on flourishing. I'd recommend quitting while you're ahead... erm; even though you never were ahead.

Let's keep in mind, and you can review my previous post (to see your posts, and me addressing every point you made), me refuting everything you argued with me about -- not your opinions on the game, but your commentary on my reading and comprehension.

Think the game isn't worth a full retail release? SWEET! That had absolutely nothing to do with our argument -- rather, the absence of your opinion was at the core of our argument, in addition to your inappropriate defensive lash-outs.

Anything else you want to be wrong about?

I grabbed this today at wal-Mart with a price match of the Fry's ad for $29.99.

This is $29.99 well spent!

There is almost no depth to this game, but the gameplay, graphics, and online are just phenomenal!

I played through the tutorial, and housed the first tournament, and then decided to head online.......This is where this game really shines!

I pretty much suck with a 2-4 record right now, but 2 of my losses were real close, and the tempo combined with the smooth gameplay make this one of the most fun online games I've played in a long time!

I'm really jonesing for a Career mode after what I've played so far, but at $29.99, I'll take it for what it is; a super fun game, with slick gameplay, superb graphics, and super fun and competitive online mode.

Go out and get it, if you haven't already:)

Picked it up today. Aced the tutorial and had the impression it was a simple and shallow game. Then I got my ass kicked by an "easy" AI opponent about 5 games straight. I'm feeling that quick frustrated addiciton that Geometry Wars carried with it. The more I got my ass kicked, the more I have to play, and the more I realize how much reflex is involved. Man, to respond to the spin of the ball based on that little color blur... You have to have some insane reflexes. Fun so far. I'm looking forward to some more.

I got my ass kicked by the Irish Wench in the normal tourney, while I was slapping around everyone else with a large trout. Was like 12-0 then went 12-7 thanks to her.

I've read if you win 50 games, via exhibition or tourney with a character you pretty much unlock everyone. Shirts are pretty understandable on how to get, but what about venues/locations ?

This game is addicted like crack. Top Spin 2 still compliments this game nicely and I'm sure in the long run people will stop hatin' on that game, but for now this game should be the rage for weeks to come.

Well, that would be cool. If I ended up setting up the tourney, I would have used my $10 Amex from that promotion way back when (yes, I still have not used it), but Rockstar prizes would be alot more appropriate/cooler.

Anyways, we really only need 4 people, 8 at most, so at last count, 5 people including me are interested, so if 3 more want to join up, we could get an 8 person tourney (Hooray for run-on sentences). Or, we could somehow fit more if needed, like a two-bracket tourney, etc.

Edit: Scratch that, I looked at my Amex card (which I haven't done in a while lol), and it expires at the end of this month.

i get a little frustrated with this game. I feel like I've got it down for a couple of games, then someone just smokes me. I tried an easy tournie and dominated the first three matches easily, then the Egyptian guy pounds me. There's a lot to be said for consistancy. Hitting that mark where you're in the "zone" changes the play dramatically. Let your opponent get there and you may be in trouble. Fun stuff. Haven't played on line yet. Need more practice.

It was $35 used, so it cost me a little less than a Matrix: Path of Neo & a Marc Ecko's Getting Up. ;)

It's so tempting... $35 is just about 3 lunches one week so all I would have to do is pack something to justify it... hmmm...

$35 for three lunches?! Damn, if you're living it up that much just buy the damn game! I feel guilty if I spend $15 on three lunches.

I just got the game today and I have to say its pretty fun. I only played for about 15 minutes, but it seems really fun. I don't know any of the buttons because I haven't really done the training.

I've been playing this most of the day, and I've come to realize that I suck at it. I keep telling myself that I'm better than these other people playing on Live, but they all assure me that I am not.

Jesper is becoming one of my most hated video game characters of all time. I can't play single player without him beating the crap out of me and 75% of the people I've played against on Live also make him the most cussed out Swedish table tennis player of all time.

I gotta agree with you on Jesper...he's on my short-list for "most annoying videogame character of all-time".

You gotta admit, though, he's got some really nice calves. :)

I know I've looked at them a lot when thinking about cutting his achilles tendon and ending his table tennis career for good.

You have to nail Jesper with speed. Switch, back and forth, to both sides of his table... and keep on your toes, so you don't return to the ball to him with a weak, high shot, or you're fucking doomed.

I just don't think I'm good enough to beat him on the Pro Circuit. I can get through the first two tournaments fine, but anytime I hit anything to his forehand side on Pro, he crams it right down my ass.

Been playing alot more. Put it on easy to unlock all the places to play at and all characters. Mark is more enjoyable then Jesper imho and almost just as strong with better acuracy and speed. It all depends on your playstyle though, because Jesper is still the strongest. My only dissapointment is there are no characters with perfect serve abilitys, would have been nice to see more aces.

So did this game just die out of interest already or what?

I was making tournaments earlier and no one was joining at all. What happended to the CAG tourney?

So far I'm on a 17 game winning streak, I think im 23-4. It's sad because 2 of my loses came to the msg screen freeze glitch, one because my opponent was really laggy, and the other because I was dumb enough to play a ranked game for my first experience which was my only legitmate loss. Then again when all your opponents are Jesper and Mr. Ping you get use to the same tactics. Mark kicks ass.

Someone challenge me please.

I think people are still in the "lemme get the hang of the controls first, before I embarrass myself online" stage. :)

Anyways, I'm always down to play online. I actually think people who jump online right away to learn this game have an advantage over those who "come up" in the one player mode. I know from playing solo mode too much, I've had a hard time online from the bad habits I've picked up by playing too "mechanically" against the cpu (hope that makes sense).

Anyways, I'm thinking of just having an impromptu tourney every nite at a set time...nothing big, just show up and we can shoot the bull and get a couple of timed tourney's in. If anyone's down, just add me to your friends list or shoot me a message, and I'll set something up starting tomorrow nite (maybe twice a nite, one at 7pm pacific and one at 10pm pacific...that should cover all the time zones).

Thanks,

Toper

I'm getting a lot better now (well maybe not a lot, but at least better). The main thing that helped me improve was trying to hit more shots closer to the net. Before I was just hitting everything either right or left without paying attention to whether I was hitting it deep or short. This makes a huge difference in the game and is really where spin comes into play.

Tip: Try hitting cross-court backhands with "red" spin while holding the left analog controller down and to the right. This is a good way to get people/the computer running around and out of position. (Don't try this against a low-trajectory shot with back-spin though or you'll hit it into the net).

Are you telling me that there was a chance to have a "Win Wombat's Balls" contest and you didn't run with that? Cheapy, I think it's time to start having open auditions for the Podcast. Wombat's losing his touch.

Well, I was doing the tourney thing, but I decided with only abotu 8 people, and with some not even giving me their availability, I decided it really wasn't worth the effort for so little people, and I would most likley have to deal with the "OMG, liek, I said I couldn't get on at liek, teh time you put me on."

Seems like the tournie thread was up to about a dozen interested people, and there are a lot more folks here that seem to be up for it. Maybe we shouldn't worry about specific times, and just set up brackets and give everyone a week to play their game before moving to the next bracket? Then each pair of players will just have to work out the specifics of when they play their match or matches...

I'd always be up for a tourney. This seems like the only game I've been playing lately, so if I'm online, feel free to challenge me to a match.

I should hopefully be finishing up the All-Star Circuit in single player today. I tried 5-6 times yesterday to beat the last guy (Luc in my case), and failed miserably.

Generally, the only time you'll hit it into the net is if you are trying to return a shot that has backspin on it with a spin other than backspin. You can pretty much hit any shot short as long as you are paying attention to the spin the ball has on it when it is coming towards you. If you try and cut a ball that has low trajectory backspin on it, you will almost always hit it into the net if you don't either a) return it with backspin or b) return it deep with any kind of spin. Other than that, you should very rarely be hitting it into the net.

Thanks, maybe that'll help me with that bitch Cassidy, I can't fucking beat her, sometimes I wish for a cheat in the style of Rockstar games where I could just beat the crap out of her with the paddles or stuff a few balls down her throat. She is so damn cheap. :bomb:

Finally got throught the All-Star Circuit last night. I don't know if I'll actually take the time to play through that circuit with all the players though. The single player game is finally starting to get a little boring for me, which is not too bad for the amount of time I've played it. I'll probably keep the game because the online is so fun, and maybe I'll just dabble in single player from time to time now.

I spent over 2+ hours going at Carmen over and over again. She was a fucking bitch to face with Mark.

I have yet to tackle the All Star circuit. My 21 game win streak in live exhibition games ended yesterday when someone whopped me with Jurgen, then I got edged by a Luc and my ranking went all the way from 500 to 900ish. bah.

I wouldn't get rid of this game because the multiplayer is so simple and a blast, even though the single player is lacking (and I still have achievements to get).

If you lose a match in an offline tournament, do you have to start over again or does it let you retry that one match?

You can just restart the match that you are on. You can do that as many times as necessary.

To unlock all the outfits, you have to win 22 matches with everyone correct? Now does anyone know if this also includes online wins or do they all have to be done offline?

As for the natural achievement, where you have to beat any of the tournament circuits with every character, does it have to be on default settings or can I change it to 7 point matches?

I got all of my wins offline I believe, so I'm not sure on the first question. I thought is was closer to 30-40 wins, but I might be wrong.

For all of the tournament achievements, you can change the settings to 7 point matches.
