Just wondering if there is a plug in that makes hyperlinked address open a gmail window, rather than outlook. tried searching through the plug in site, but didn't see anything.

Yes, there is an extension that when you click on an email link it will open whatever email client you prefer (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.) I had it a few weeks ago and uninstalled so I don't have the name with me right now.

if you have the gmail notifier, then you can set it to do that.

you have the actually gmail notifier thats in your windows taskbar right? not the firefox extension
