View Full Version : Why did I wait this long to play RE4? (tiny spoiler inside)
This game has been sitting on my shelf with many others (the unending CAG backlog) but after all the hype and someone at work telling me I should play it I dove in. This isn't really my type of game....at least that is what I thought starting it, then something happened. IT SUCKED ME IN!
I'm only on Chapter 1-3 and I'm up to the part where you fight in the lake aganist that big fish but I can't get over the presentation of this game. It's unreal.
I'm ususally pretty impressed by graphics from the PS2 and GC but this game just blew me away. I feel as if I'm playing a movie. If this is sitting on your shelf you owe it to yourself to play it.

It only gets better. I'm on Chapter 2-3 right now and the entire experience has been amazing.

I think I suck at it though because I've tried getting past this one part about 10 times with no luck.
I'm at the part where I'm with the President's daughter and the Spanish dude and we get forced into the house by a ton of villagers and they start breaking down the doors and windows. I just can't seem to keep them at bay.

That part owned. It was like the Night of the living dead. With shotguns.

Run upstairs and cap them as they come up. The high ground puts you at a great advantage, and Luis takes care of a few before they get to you(and he can't die!) Of course, if you're talking about the 2nd part where they start coming through the upstairs windows...that's just a matter of skill.

Also, after you defeat that boss, instead of moving forward in the game, go back the way you came and you should run into another interesting, extra encounter.
RE4 is on my top games all time list easily. I was blown away the first time I ever played it. It was one of those rare games that I played thru again immediately after beating it the first time. After that I spent weeks playing the mercenaries game, and assignment Ada kicks ass too.
I got the PS2 version for my friend as a gift, and Im currently waiting for him to finish it so I can borrow it and play the new additional content they added for that version.
And I second what Brainwave0 said, its all about the Chicago Typewriter!!!

Alright, I admit, I haven't played it either. So which version should I get? I've got a 'cube and PS2, and I know the PS2 has added content, so is there any reason I should get it for Gamecube? The visuals aren't a whole lot worse on PS2, right?

Ha... this is sitting on my shelf, as well. I started playing RE0 last week, but while it was pretty and fun, I think the save ribbons thing is gonna piss me off, from a convenience standpoint more than anything else. So I might open up RE4 finally; I don't know if RE4 has that feature as well, but that wasn't really the point of my spiel.

I did the same thing. I played through it 4 times, and did everything you could do in the mercenaries mode. I never thought I'd put 60+ hours into a Resident Evil game. Capcom proved me wrong.

The GC version's visuals quite a bit better (though the PS2 version gets true widescreen) than the PS2. I know how visuals are of minor concern and whatnot, but this is one fantastic looking game and is reason enough as to why the next gen systems (or at least the 360) are not that major a leap in terms of graphics.
Gameplay wise, the GC version feels more natural but the PS2 version has more content. In all honesty, the GC version's controls just feel better to me. I was getting headshots within the first few minutes of playing the GC version but in the PS2 version, it took a while.
It's a really hard decision actually.:)

The save ribbons are not used in RE4. It still uses a typewriter to save, but saves are unlimited (max of 20 save spots but you don't need a damn ribbon to save).
I could not get through 0. I tried many times but I just got sick of the switching back and forth. RE4, on the other hand, rocks. It is pretty much a non-stop escort mission, but it just feels natural. I think I'm on Chapter 4-2 right now. I picked it up when it dropped to $20.

You won't be able to go back to regular RE after you play 4. There's no way. It's one of the few games I played nonstop two or three times. I got it for $24 when it came out (Target Raincheck...now they're dead ) and felt like I was ripping them off because it was so awesome. Additionally, this game was meant to be played on the cube. While the extra costumes in the Ps2 version are cool looking, Assignment ADA is boring and the graphics/sound take a large downgrade. Not to mention it's impossible to aim with the Ps2's analog stick. I fucking hate that thing.

What about for someone like me? I am a casual gamer and love games like Mario platforms, Animal Crossing, and Meteos. I've never really gotten into first person shooters (I have the hardest time aiming) and am not a big gore fan.......
That said, I don't mind a little mindless violence and am open to new things. I'm tempted based on the near-unanimous praise RE4 receives, but worry it's really only geared to certain kinds of players.

It doesn't matter. This game has to be played. Even if you only play through the first chapter or so and puss out after that, it's still an experience that you won't soon forget.
I love hearing everyone talk about how amazing the game is from playing the first couple of chapters. Like someone else said, it only gets better. And better. And better.

I never finished it and I sold it.
I thought the game was kinda hard. I had to repeat alot of parts over and over. I made it pretty far tho. Well into chapter 3 maybe even into 4?
I did buy the game again recently for $15. I might give it another whirl.
I fought the controls alot the first time and got tired of it after nearly 20 hours and probably more with all my restarts. I had killed more than enough zombies by that point. I think I had my fill.
It didn't help either that the game had too many cutscenes and context sensitive press a button and watch your character do the action stuff. Or the go to the inventory screen to change a weapon slowdowns. Turn-offs for me.
I thought it looked great and was pretty intense at times tho. But after awhile I just got tired of it. You're mostly just killing guy after guy. IT's fun for awhile, but 20 hours? Nah. I've played too many pc fps games for it to hold my interest more than that.

For you and the guy above asking if its right for him. The weapon switching shouldnt have been an issue? maybe you were trying to play it like a FPS and not the game it is. If you need to break boxes use the quick change to switch to the knife. Otherwise run with your gun of choice. Its not like you have to switch a lot.?
To the person above asking if its right.. Its not a gore fest shoot em up. Its actually a lot deeper than that and very fun. I really really enjoyed it and when Toys R Us had some extras for $10 each I jumped on them for firends.
One of my all time favorite games.

never really liked the previous resident evils, the controls were HORRIBLE, especially how the analog stick reacted to ur character's position, not to their respective location, ie up is not ur up, its ur character's forward, which couldve been ur right, left, etc. remember playing that one resident evil where ur on the train at the beginning, think it was 0, played for like 20 min and didnt like it at all

Respectfully, I have to disagree. I love the CT. But, if we're talking reagular weapons, I liked my fully upgraded Red9 quite a bit. I tried the Blacktail, but vastly preferred the Red9.

Why do people have so much trouble with these controls? Especially in the later REs where you can turn around quickly by pressing back+B. Really, if you can't get it down within 5 minutes, you close-minded people should have your hands cut off.

Just the fact people were willing to try kind of means they aren't closed minded, IMO. Why should anyone play a game where the controls are so fundamentally screwed up that it ruins the experience? Some people are willing to overlook it and some people aren't which I completely understand.
Hey, not everyone likes Metroid Prime solely based on the controls and to me it's the best console game ever made. I wish people would look past it but I understand when they can't.
Controls should not be something that you eventually get used to from playing for 5 hours - they should be intuitive and you should get used to them in 5 minutes. Besides, there are already way too many great games out there and we can't play them all.

How do the controls ruin the experience? IMO, they've always added to the experience and atmosphere. If it were an action/adventure game, I'd understand, but it's not. It's survival horror. I think some people have always wanted it to be action/adventure, which is how we ended up with RE4. And what pisses me off the most are the people that say "RE4 best game ever made, all the other REs were complete and utter crap, this of course being based off my 10 minute experiences with the older REs", when RE4 and the older REs aren't really even in the same genre, and, imo, shouldn't be compared as they give different gameplay and experiences.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing RE4, it's one of my favorite of this gen. I just wish people would stop bashing the older REs for starting a new genre instead of conforming to an existing one.

Have you ever played a game that has a static camera that changes orientation frequently, but the controls are NOT relative to which way your character is facing forward? Yeah, it sucks. I just love going on to the next screen only to have my character turn around immediately back the way he came!

So, do you sleep while you play or are your reaction times that slow?
Besides, that has little to do with control scheme, but more with the angles. 3D Final Fantasies do this quite a bit, yet I don't see people complaining about those.

I heard great things about RE4 that I decided to buy the game at full price in January 2005. It is one of my most played games for the GameCube, I just couldn't put the game down! It got crazier and crazier as the game progressed! You won't want to put this game down until you reach the very end! The Mercenaries is a blast to play too, it should definitely be released in the arcade.

correction...it rocks almost to the end.
the final boss is not as dynamic as previous in the game
I played a few of the older RE's for a few minutes but probably the only reason I didn't play longer was lack of time...kind of like now. As for the controls...no they aren't bad they are just different. If you play for about 5 or 10 minutes playing becomes natural at least that's what I found with those games.
I know a lot of people say you can't really go backwards but RE4 has me interested in at least trying the Resident Evil remake for the Cube. I know its pretty cheap now so even if I hate it I won't lose much.

I think the control for the older REs are meant to be that way. Personally I liked all the RE's, because I have played every single one of them and beaten it. The old, "Tank" like control also adds the survival horror experience ( i guess by making camera and control not as user friendly, ha), If you would want better camera angle or easy control, stick to adventure games like tomb raider. RE4 is more towards the action side, which the game tends to be longer, larger area to explore and more enemy spawn. (If you picture playing the old RE's in RE4 style, the game would end in like 3 hours probably)
To me, old REs are similar to Kuon (ps2), or old onimusha 1, except Oni got more action, less puzzle. But the control, camera and lack of ability to interact with scene are all the same.
RE4 is in it's own category, cold fear is closest but has mixed camera mode so quite a bit different right there.
I think SH3 is a great showcase that combines good camera angle and good amount of action. I do not like SH4 camera angle personally as somehow it reminds me of tomb raider.
I like all the RE's, maybe i am the only sucker that enjoys the tank like movement.

That's funny, I just beat RE4 last night as well. What a great game! I also played through Assignment Ada, but could not beat the final boss after around 20 tries and since there are no saves, I just had to give up. I was totally pissed that I wasted that hour.
Anyway, as far as the controls on the "old school" RE games go, they are supposed to be that way. I know this has already been stated in this thread but it is worth repeating. If you had true analog control, the RE games would be way too easy. I agree that it can be incredibly frustrating at times, but it really balances out the difficulty.

I love plenty of games with crap controls...
Resident Evil series...
Armored Core series...
the older Tomb Raider games...
When I first played Tomb Raider 1&2, I thought they were the greatest games ever and had no idea what people meant when they said it has crap controls.
Last fall I went back to play TR2 again and I could not believe how bad the controls were! Its like they had a contest for the worst way to control a 3D game. I gave up after 20 minutes of running into walls and not being able to turn around in less than 30 seconds.

It's terrible game design; the complaints are justified. It's called artificial difficulty and thankfully, for the most part, game design has evolved past that. The difficulty should lie in challenging puzzles and intelligent AI; a player should never have to struggle against awkward camera angles and frustrating controls.

What do you propose that the intelligent AI of a shuffling zombie could be? They only came up with a new solution in RE4 by having multitudes of fast-moving enemies. They had to get rid of zombies, period, to fix it. Not that that's bad, but the point remains that in so many years no one has yet figured out how to make a zombie game without a gameplay handicap. The N64 version of RE2 has an option for non-tank controls but that just makes the game unchallenging and thus not fun.

For all intents and purposes, the enemies in RE4 are still zombies.
And everyone I know prefers the N64 version of RE2 because of the analog controls. The "gameplay handicap" didn't make the games fun; people just weren't that discriminating with the controls and camera angles simply because the technology couldn't handle realtime graphics in RE1 - 3. Now that the technology is there, we have RE:Outbreak and how many people can stand playing that game? Most people hate it.
