I have this problem a lot, and most often a different fix is needed everytime.
However, what works most often for me is unplug every cable, unplug the modem for about a minute, Plug all the wires from the modem to the router then, then replug the modem in. This resets the IP in the modem and assigns it to the router. Then proceed to plug the lan cables from the comp to the router.

Make sure your Cable/DSL modem is plugged into the 'WAN' port and your computer is plugged into one of the 'LAN' ports marked 1-4. Also, you should be using a straight cable (the color coded wired should be in the same sequence on both ends) connecting to the modem and the computer. Make sure that you have a physical connection to the router and see if the 'link light' is lit.

The link light is on and there is a physical connection, my uncle is getting internet but I am not.

Are you trying to access the router using the Wifi??

No , im just trying to get internet to my computer just using a ethernet cable. If I connect directly to the modem I can get internet, but not with the router.

Have you tried connecting your computer to the same port as your uncle's computer? Tried his cable?

Yea I tried switching ports, but nothing has happened, also I cant use his cable because mine is really far away form his and his wont even reach mine.
Also not wanting to create another thread, whenever I use my wireless adapter my computer freezes sometimes, if im not using the wireless adapter it will not freeze. Any ideas on how to fix it?
A few more details might be helpful.
Are you on cable modem or DSL?
What is the make/model of your router?
What OS are the machines using?
Let me get the rest of the details straight. Please tell me if any of my assumptions are incorrect.
1. When you have your PC connected directly to the modem, it works.
2. Now you connect the modem to the router's WAN port and your PC to one of the LAN ports. I assume the PC is connected to the router with the SAME cable you used to connect the PC directly to the modem.
3. You connect your uncle's PC to one of the other LAN ports on the router.
4. His PC can access the internet. Your PC cannot. (are you SURE about this because this is CRITICAL information)
5. You try hooking your PC to your uncle's port and it still doesn't work.
Ok, I'm going to rule out a bad LAN port on the router, because you did some swapping and it still didn't work. I'm going to rule out your PC's ethernet cable because when you use that same cable to connect directly to the modem it works.
First, note that every time you change the configuration to test, you should reboot everything before declaring that "it doesn't work". To reboot the whole network, you have to do the following:
1. Turn off or unplug the modem, the router, and all PC's
2. Turn on the modem and let it finish it's self test.
3. Turn on the router.
4. Turn on the PC's.
Here are some ideas...
If you're using DSL, then your PC may be set up to use a PPPoE broadband connection as the primary internet connection. This is what a DSL modem requires, but won't work through the router. To go through the router, you just want the plain old Local Area Connection to be the primary internet connection and you want to set it to Obtain IP and DNS Addresses Automatically (DHCP).
If you're using DSL, then somebody had to set up the router to use PPPoE because they're usually set by default to DHCP.
If this doesn't give you the flash of insight to get it working, it would be helpful to get the output from ipconfig from both PC's.
To do this go to the Start menu and click on Run. Then type cmd in the command field and click OK. Now you have a DOS window. In that window just type ipconfig /all and then hit <enter>. Post the output from BOTH PC's.
Then we'll take it from there.

I am on dsl, and yes my uncle can get the internet, but I can not through the router. Also which ones are the output?
How do I set it so that I am able to obtain Ip and DHCP?

Seems to be how my Linksys router is working lately. It would cut out every once in awhile which was an easy fix. Just cut off the router and modem. Turned them both back on and reboot. Everything worked fine. Now it seems the router would not work at all when I would start up the computer. Would only work when I reset everything.
I'm on dsl. Going to get a wireless router sooner or later, so no biggie. Just a pain in the butt. So should I stick with Linksys or go with something else?

Linksys routers are overrated nowadays. The Dlink GamerLounge 4300 router I hear is awesome. ZERO reboots. Plus the router supports QOS (quality-of-service) which prioritizes traffic based on what is set. You can be running BitTorrent WHILE on XBL with practically nil lag for example. Router is a bit on the pricer side ($125), but BestBuy has it for $100 at the moment.

Run > Services.msc > DHCP Client
Set it to start and automatic.

Did you read this?????

To go through the router, you just want the plain old Local Area Connection to be the primary internet connection and you want to set it to Obtain IP and DNS Addresses Automatically (DHCP).
Go to Control Panel->Network Connections <RightClick>Local Area Connection->Properties-> Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)-> Properties->general tab
Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is set.
Also, back on the network connections window, if there is an entry for your DSL connection, either delete it, or make sure that it is not the default connection. Your local area connection should now be the default.
