Not sure of the technical term for them, but was browsing eBay and this seemed to be the cheapest for them:

Is this around the normal price for these or could it be had elsewhere for cheaper?

I'm sure that a capture card would be cheaper but I really don't want to deal with that I just wanted something simple that I could transfer VHS to my computer.

Thanks for any help, not really good with PC hardware.

Word of advice. USB Based capture devices SUCK.
They drop frames left and right & the maximum resolution is crap @ 320x240. Better off getting a hardware based solution such as this at the bare minimum.

You get what you pay for.

Well, I'm only going to be capturing 10 - 20 seconds at a time (Yeah I'm the 1,635,230th person to try a Halo 2 montage...) If I have to try a few times to get it right it really wouldn't bother me. I guess sound wouldn't be really important either.

Is it really that bad? Or would it be suitable for something simple like 10 second clips?

Money would be better spent on a hardware solution. Hell even this would be better (AND CHEAPER)
