No reason to get your knits in a ninny, but I thought this was an interesting article (http://www.time.com/time/asia/biz/article/0,9754,1172277,00.html) about a new law going in effect in Japan to ban retro electronics. By retro, I mean made before 2001!

"Worst Law Ever!" screamed Weekly Playboy, a tabloid geared towards young Japanese men.

If I got burned by paying full price for E.T. I would hold a grudge.

Sega fans have to be going crazy over there.

I see even Time magazine is still referring to gamers as nerds. Funny, how come they don't call homosexuals "fruits" or "queers" too?

Wow, now that is a very weird law. What's next? Grandma hit 70, send her out to the trash chute!

I'd actually like to see that.

Yes, I noticed that as well, but I would hope Time would have followed up to see if there was an actual law in place. Maybe that is asking too much... or maybe the Japanese government is pulling the biggest April Fool's joke ever.

There is an actual law that is going to go into effect in April, but it's not as bad as it seems. Here's two links that talk about it:

MutantFrog (http://www.mutantfrog.com/2006/02/22/2nd-hand-electronics-sales-will-not-soon-be-illegal-in-japan/)

Kotaku (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/retro/japan-regulates-the-crap-outta-used-consoles-156423.php)

Are police going to go door to door and search houses for old consoles and arrest the people that have them?

RTFAs hector posted. The first one is not only inaccurate but also doesn't give the government's reasoning (safety or pollution or some bullshit).

What's a Ninendo?

Do they have April Fool's Day in Japan? They should stage a Pong-In on April 1 to protest.

What's a Ninendo?

It is like a 9-10-doh, but with less RAM and the carts sucked ass.

hmm, thanks for clearing that up. I'll have to add one to my trade list so I don't miss anything for my collection.

It launched around the time of the Intellevision and got lost in the shuffle.

This is one of the MILLIONS of idiotic decisions made by the higher-ups in Japan.

So many people think Japan is this awesome paradise full of games and beautiful women (well it is, to a certain extent...) but there's SO much bullshit you have to put up with if you actually live here.

Well, good thing I'm going to Sofmap on the 25th I guess

The law even affect cars over there, which is why Japanese residents who actually own cars always sell them and buy new ones after just a few years. It's prohibitively more expensive to keep it and pay the extra costs for owning an "old and polluting" car.

CheapyD should start an old console smuggling racket.
