PlayStation 3 to Require HDD for Games
Mar. 15th, 2006 7:20 am
At the Sony's PlayStation business briefing, Kutaragi revealed that a HDD will be required for games but it wasn't clear if the hard drive will ship with the units or not
"The hardware was developed with the hard disk in mind," Kutaragi said at the event. "We view the hard drive to be mandatory for the PS3. Rather than have developers create games for the PS3 with or without the HDD, we will be asking them to develop games as though all PS3s have the HDD installed."
He continued saying that Sony hopes to avoid a situation where some units have the hard drive and others don't but then he said Sony "might end up installing it in all PS3s, though that depends on the market".
So it's not clear if the PlayStation 3 will come with a hard drive or not but then how is it possible that all games (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/10468/PlayStation-3-to-Require-HDD-for-Games/#) require the hard drive if the company doesn't include one with every unit?
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/696/696056/ps-biz-brief-06-ps3-hdd-required-20060315025251472.jpg The PS3 will use a 60GB, upgradeable hard drive that comes pre-loaded with Linux
If you can figure out the puzzle, let us know.

Update 3/18:
First, the confirmation that every PlayStation 3 game requires a hard drive and the comments by Kutaragi that the HDD might not be included with every console were a contradiction so we checked with a few sources in the U.S. and Europe and we can now confirm that the PlayStation 3 will include a 60GB hard drive right out of the box. In addition, there will be bigger hard drives available for users to purchase.

not sure how smart it is to require it. Might turn a few people off. This is good news for me since I would've bought a HDD anyway. This only means it will definitely be supported.

My understanding was that Sony was going to require the registering of games kind of like Half Life 2. Although I wasnt sure how reliable that was as renting games and the used game market for PS3 would be non existant then... But maybe thats what Sony wants? Those are all lost sales anyway.

So you are excited about having to buy a required acces. for a $500 machine? I don't see why they wouldn't bundle it in, whatever the market will be.
360 fans got enough shit for the system of their choice so fuck a PS3... (although I still plan on getting a PS3 for free).

My confidence in the PS3 has been dwindling for sometime now ... hopefully there will be some things to change that because I expect an excellent product considering it will be the last console released for this new cycle and the most expensive.

I cant see Sony being stupid enough to ship without a HDD if the games require one. They probably meant that when they were deciding on the final specs they just told developers to develop for a HDD because its easier to take it out later than to add it in later.

If this is true that ALL games REQUIRE a hard disk and the PS3 ships without one, then that is just fucking stupid. Fuck shooting themselves in the foot, Sony just blew their own legs off if thats true.

Some good news for developers and gamers: the PS3 will ship with a 60 GB hard drive included with the system, meaning that game developers can assume that one is present.

Okay, yeah that makes more sense. Now I just wonder how much the PS3 is going to cost. I've been saying $400 up until now but I think $500 is probably more likely now.

I think it all depends on how much sony is willing to lose. Regardless of the price it will probaly sell out at launch anyway.

Nope i was just marveling at your level of input. Pointing out that Gamefaqs would be a good home for you has nothing to do with me wanting to buy a HD or not.
We shall see what happens At e3 with sony, thats when the big accusations can be thrown around. cheers!

I never trust the word ASSUME, b/c we all know what happens when you do that....i'll not assume anything in regaurds to this system anymore

After checking other sources most people aren't ready to confirm the system comes with a hard drive standard. I wonder if they plan to do two SKUs like the Core/Premium 360s. I think it was a bad idea then and would be a bad idea now, but then I don't run either company unfortunately.

The HDD is confirmed to be included.
Our Sony representative has confirmed this morning that PlayStation 3 will come with a 60GB HDD as standard, but that can be upgraded if preferred.
Some of the larger US websites have been speculating that PlayStation 3 would be shipping with an optional 60GB hard disc drive. However we can confirm this morning that all PS3 consoles will be sold with the HDD out of the box. Sony's president of Computer Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi, announced on Wednesday that all PS3 games are being developed to take advantage of the 60GB HDD.
Another essential use for the HDD will be Sony's online service, which will offer downloads in a similar way to Microsoft's Xbox Live platform. Clearly now it is Sony's intention to standardise the PlayStation 3 community, so that all developers know that everybody who owns PS3 will benefit from HDD-related features in-game. Bizarrely this used to be Microsoft's standpoint with its original Xbox, but the Redmond corporation has since taken an about turn with Xbox 360.

^^ Sweet hope that source is true. If PS3 has most of the games (like this gen), the most powerful hardware, and a HDD I'm pretty sure it will be my choice. I just might have to wait 3-4 years to be able to afford one...
If they made the HDD optional many if not most developers would code their games expecting it to NOT be there IMO. Only exception would be if Sony actually locked the thing out from booting a PS3 game disc if the HDD wasn't present. Or if the attach rate for the HDD really did hit a very high %, say 80%+. Just doesn't make sense to alienate a portion of the buying public if you don't have to.

The PS3 is starting to sound like the system to go with on yet another unexpected front (a universal online system and now a mandatory HDD?). PS3: required HDD (that dev's can take full advantage of) and Blu-Ray discs. 360: a fraction of disc storage on DVD-ROMs and a HDD that's optional and not really being taken advantage of other than game saves and non-gaming media. I'll bet Microsoft is regretting the release of the core system right about now.

Awesome, I cant wait for the PS3 now. Its easily the best sounding console IMO. Many awesome confirmed games to be coming out for it (MGS4, DMC4, KZ2, I-8, etc) and a required HDD. Sony learned their HDD mistakes from the PS2 and decided to be smart about it. Not only that, today I read (in the newspaper) that the PS3 will not exceed $500...I'd scan in the paper for proof if I had a scanner, but I dont.

Affable on stage, Harrison grew testy at the questions directed at him. After repeating Sony's previous assertions that all PS3 games would require the hard drive to run, he rebuffed questions on whether PlayStation 3 would ship with it. "I'm head of software studios, not hardware," said a vexed Harrison. His remarks appeared to contradict recent European press reports which said Sony had confirmed the next-gen console would come bundled with a 60GB HDD.

I think its the same situation were already in with ps2 and memory cards..U get ur ps2 out of the box u play and realize...holy shit without a memory card i cant save shit now i gotta go out and buy that seperate and there 30 bucks??
There just gonna pull the same thing with the hard drive perhaps more like the 360 and they will drop 2 versions one with and one without.

On the other side of the coin, it'll be hard for them to make even a $500 price point with a 60GB 2.5 inch hard drive. But I doubt they require it and don't include it, that makes absolutely no sense. Theres no way in the world they could require it and not include it.

This is great news that it is bundled. Now I am just worried about price. Everything else sounds great so far. Region free, improved online, and bundled HDD. I really doubt they could price this the same as the premium. Since it has been delayed, I think it will be a while before we get the price.

That's totally different. Without the memory card, you could still play games exactly like they were meant to be played. But if you don't have the hdd, then you won't be able to play the game at all.

price was just stated to be at least $800 in Forbes or Money I forget which...this price point seems more accurate with options supposed to be included with the ps3 (built in Wifi, 60gig HD, BlueRay, 1080p, etc)...M$ can't meet even their $400 price point without these options and still are selling the 360 at losses over 150 bucks...so with the inclusion of the BlueRay drive and 1080p capabilities be prepared for the closer to $800 price point...
If the HDD gets rid of load times I'm all for it.

Smart move by Sony. The HDD really reduced load time for Xbox. Nice if every PS3 has one. It is too bad MS took a step back to the dark ages and not have every X360 shipped with a HDD.
