What Harddrives fit into the and is compatible PS2????

I was jsut wondering Im pretty poor and cheap(hence the site im at), and just looknig to pick up a cheap hd off of ebay, but I need it to fit into the ps2 exp slot and be compatible, thanxs for anyones help

You're being too cheap though. Cheap to the point of "hell no, that doesn't work."

The official hard drives for the PS2 have some odd proprietary firmware on them that the PS2 specifically looks for. Also you'd need the HDD Utility Disk to setup the drive and Sony doesn't hand those out. Simply put, if you want a PS2 hard drive, you have to buy a PS2 hard drive. That being said, you can find them for about $89 at most places.

Even when it is coupled with FFXI, they've already said that you are only paying for the HDD and that FFXI is free. So I don't see it mattering.

I think if you buy the upcoming HD Loader (www.hdloader.com) it will format any hard drvie to work with the PS2. THen you will be able to rip your own games to the hard drive and load the games off that instead of the discs.

Yeah, but why would you even want the harddrive at this point in time if you didn't want to play FF XI, just to make RE Outbreak load faster? Not really worth it. At this time, the only reason to even think about getting a HDD for the PS2 is to play FF XI, untill more games are released that utilize it, you'd just be wasting your time.

I disagree.. the hard drive is about the price a large chain store like Best Buy would charge for a 40gb drive.

I never realized how much of a deal it is untill now! (actually somewhere amid all those 200 dollar drives, the maxtor and samsung 40 gb drives run from 55-90 bucks anyway so they can justify the price if they claim its a fast drive.)

News flash for in uninformed: EVERYTHING for console gaming suffers from over inflated prices. The mere 8MB of storage that the PS2 memory cards have certainly isn't costing Sony $25. They are making a killing on memory cards. It's no different with the hard drive. Sony is in the business of making money. The price of console gaming is having to put up with inflated prices. It's part of the cost of gaming. How do you not understand this yet? FFXI is indeed, truly, 100% free.
