Let's talk Transformers!

G1 vs *, Leonard Nimoy, Scatman Crothers, Unicron, Megatron, Optimus Prime, Stan Bush, Transformers figures, whatever. How about that new live-action movie? Want to share some peotic odes to Starscream? Talk about whatever you want to discuss regarding our favorite transforming bots in here.

CAGs, move out!

My original post that started this thread
:
OK, so I am so completely rusty with my Transformers (pity...I used to know it back and fowards), especially the Japan-only series. I know I may need to take this to a dedicated Transformers forum, but I figured, eh, why not see if someone on CAG knows?

I've got this female character here, and I have no idea who she is. I don't even know which series she's from, actually. Can anyone identify her? Thanks in advance.

I’ve loved Gen 1 ever since I was a kid, and I actually thought the domestic Beast Wars series was tolerable. The places the show seemed to go in Japan never cease to amaze me: all the stories we never heard like the weird-assed Headmasters/Targetmasters shows and the Battle Beasts cross-over.

Seriously, though, don’t write off the latter Japanese TF toys and cartoons too quickly. In Beast Wars II the Optimus Prime character (which would be the Convoy character in the Japanese incarnation) was a Lion, and in Beast Wars Neo he was a mammoth… a wooly… fucking… mammoth!

oh, i'll write it off - he was a mammoth eh? where's the mammoth now? Bein' eaten by some ruskies in the middle of nowhere.

What was Prime originally? A motherfuckin SEMI!

Remember in the movie when all the other retarded autobots couldn't kill one measly decepticon, and then in like 20 seconds, Prime runs over almost all of them and then gats everyone else WHILE HE'S IN THE AIR!?

that's what I'm talking about. None of this, "me ape, attack you" bullshit.

You people who write off the newer TF series really amaze me. Ever realize that it's not 1984 anymore? The G1 cartoon really hasn't aged well and TF series like Galaxy Force and Super Link (currently watching) are amazing and surpass the G1 series in storytelling and have a better toyline.'

I am looking forward to the live action movie though.

yeah, it's not 1984, i'm no longer 5 years old, and the idea of a robot turning into a volkswagen beetle doesn't impress me as much.

neither does the idea of a robot turning into a monkey or whatever.

I didn't have a whole lot but I also had...

Cliffjumper
Swoop
Bombshell (Insecticon)

Skywarp

Hahaha, I was really suprised when I saw this thread had nearly 30 replies. :D

For what it's worth, I'm also really only into the classic G1 stuff, and some of the Japan-only stuff. And yes, for all the reasons mentioned so far (Leonard Nemoy, Orson Welles, Eric Idle, Scatman Crothers), Transformers: The Movie totally fucking rules.

The reason I wanted to ID this character was because I own an animation production cel of her (bought it on a whim cause it was cute), and I realized the other day that I don't even know who she is.

Anyway, Do you guys think I should change the OP to make this the "official" Transformers topic? Cause I will, if you want.

If I understand what you're saying, they did. Beast Wars characters are NOT G1 characters at all. Optimus Primal is NOT Optimus Prime, and though they share the same name Megatron (dino) is not Megatron G1. Beast Wars imo is the best written TF show I've seen. I grew up with G1 and it will always be my favorite, but going back and watching most episodes of it is only good for nostalgia. BW entered it's prime about Season 2 and really tied into the original G1 series in season 3. It's even done in an almost believable way.

Now I'll agree with you that making these characters animals in the first place was kind of dumb, but I think they sort of changed the thinking a little bit when the "transmetal" conversion happened at the beginning of season 2.

Of course the whole show was about ruined with the followup series Beast Machines.

Hey, if any of these series were really good, I wouldn't be complaining. I would probably still buy the fricking toys. I'm not saying they don't have any redeeming values (although Headmasters is questionable) but I'm not a fan of the animation style (the CG is weak), the voice acting, the reimagined characters (wether they actually are or not.. Optimus Primal? give me a break).
The musical cues to the shows/theme songs, forgettable.

And here's a clue too.. the fact they change into animals? Tigers and bears and spit... lame. Donkeytron? Give me trucks and jets any day. I could handle the dinobots and the insections but the WHOLE cast as animals? The punny names are out of control too.

The one thing I noticed about Beast Wars that I will say it had an advantage over (in) is that they were allowed to show more damage... more direct hits. More violent in general which was a good thing. But you can't blame G1 for that, that's the 80's censors for you.

Admittedly the above is opinion but let me close the case here.

This is irrefutable science: the below is about as rugged as a Care Bear.

Hey that would work if he was in Beast Wars, er no?

I just wish I could find some decent quality fan subs for BW II and NEO. I've got Galaxy Force (Cybertron here in the US), and it is LOADS better than Cybertron. IDK why, but for Cybertron, they changed up some of the story/characters, and Galaxy Force is just soooo much better.

Other than repaints, I have every Transformers figure released since Beast Wars started except maybe about 6. I also have most of the Japanese BW II and Neo figures (man, BigBadToystore had some great sales on them a few years ago, making them the same price or less than the equivilent released in the US).

I also have an exorbitant amount of Gen 1 and 2, but a majority of my Gen 1 stuff isn't complete, cuz I got most of it at garage sales when I was little.

I like that with my Alternators display, my cousin who is in to cars asked when I started collecting model cars! Those things are beyond sweet.

I'm almost the opposite. I go for complexity. The Car Brothers, from RID/Car Robots, are imho some of the best molds ever created. Great alt mode, posable, and almost Chinese puzzle box complexity.

One of the only figures I regret buying is Energon Omega Supreme. He was huge, but a friggin brick. Ooooo, fold up my arms, and I'm a friggin trainish thing. 50 bucks well spent there *rolls eyes

Most of my Gen 1 & 2 figs are in pretty rough shape, but I have a fair amount of BW II & Neo imports. I also have some of the Hasbro Beast Machines repaints of the older Neo Takara figs.

I have a couple of animation cels as well: one with an emerging God Neptune (known domestically as the Seacons) and another featuring Heinrad and Stampy.

Never watched much of any TF after Gen 1.

Ironically, last week I was at a local used DVD shop, and they were having a buy 2 get 1 free sale. My mission was to find six DVDs that I wanted, and after I picked 5, I was having trouble finding the 6th. I was about to settle for something I didn't really want when I stumbled upon Transformers: The Movie stuck upside down in the Drama section.

Just watched it the other day after not having seen it in at least 10 years. It is every bit as good as I remembered, but what I've always really loved about it is the music. Nice collection of '80s guitar rock.

I bought the Beast Wars season sets a year or two ago on a DDD sale. Never saw the show, but figured I'd give it a try. Conclusions: this show started to grow on me by episode 4, and I'm just about done with Season 1. Beast Wars had far superior script writers than G1 ever did.

If any of you have old G1 toys in decent condition, I recommend eBay - I sold my entire collection for well over $1,000 over a year ago. Jetfire alone went for $300 but I still had the original box and instructions and all the armor and weapons... I thought I would miss them since they were such a large part of my childhood but in reality they were just taking up space in the attic...

yeah - do it! I think I started it off at $250 just to see if someone would bite but it ended at like $335 or something for the final price - I was shocked someone would pay that much. It was definitely played with too. I also sold a plastic bag filled with random weapons and parts (fists, etc.) for almost $50... people are nuts.

That's what I'd do if I had valuable old pieces.
Of course, I've always seen the things as toys, so even the ones I've bought recently are taken out of the box, and the box thrown away.
Of course, I'd never spend over $50 on one of the things, unless it was Masterpiece Optimus Prime, Fort Max or one of the other large scale ones.

I've always thought about selling them, but hey... I've kept my parents from tossing them into a garage sale for the last 20 years, so I can keep them a bit longer. I figure I'll wait till I see if my kids have any interest in them (once I have kids) and see about selling them at that point. I never took that great care of them, but most of them should be sellable.

Argh, how I hate thee ebay, for you have ruined any chances of me finding them for cheap at flee markets/ garage sales. People now know things are worth more on ebay, so decent garage sale finds are few and far between. I still hold hope for a complete Fort Max at a garage sale, just cuz it would be the greatest find ever.
