I use BTmod and colored map as well, they're the most useful without being gmae changing. I also use no psychic guards, the way I see it, if I kill someone and no one can see it, why should a guard come arrest me.
I also use a simple smaller crosshair mod, the default crosshair is so big, I wish I could turn it off, but still retain the other icons (open door, open crate, pick that up) that way I know if its illegal for me to do what I'm about to do.

I was doing the quest where you go into the gate with the Bruma guards and their captain. Apparently one of the guards was about dead and I had an errant swing at enemy that had fallen right before I hit attack. Well I killed him accidently. The captain was the only one that survived and he was thanking me profusely for helping him with the gate. Well, I get arrested once I get inside Bruma. That's so retarded.

3.2Ghz P4
Geforce 6800 OC w/ extra pipelines unlocked
1GB Ram....
maybe I just need a new video card? But then upgrade goes the whole system for PCI express =/
Any settings that will prob help? i'm running it @ 1280x720 and w/ HDR. I tried bloom instead of HDR but it didnt seem to help that much.

I can top that. I went on a mission to clear a cave of vampires. I killed them all and went back to town. I was arrested for two murders.
And then, someone was kidnapped so I went to the town where she was. (remote shit hole) I found her and the villagers all attacked me at once. I killed them all right propper. I get back to the city and return the daughter. As I'm walking out of their house a guard bursts in and arrests me AGAIN for murder. Side note on this quest. There are like 3-5 named townspeople in this village. When you're trying to get the girl out of the town they attack you on sight. So i stealth killed them all first. However, the game arbitrarily spawns a generic villager when you kill them. I killed the first two people near the girl and as I killed the last she was attacked by 2 other guys that came from no where. I reloaded and tried to change my tactics and they fucking spawned behind me... very cheep.

Only two people who never wanted to fight where the inn keeper and the general goods lady... also the guy who offers to help you out never wanted to fight.

Turn your resolution down to 1024x768, and turn some of the other settings I'd imagine you have cranked down or off. I'm running with similar specs (Pent D 3.0Ghz, GeForce 6800, 1GB Ram) and a few tweaks just fine. The CoolBits registry hack where you turn down extra frames rendered from 3 to 0 also seems to add a good amount of FPS if you haven't added that yet.

Thanks for 'extra frame rendering' tip, Genocidal, my computer ran this game fine, but there are a few locations that just bogged waaaay down, for no apparent reason (the pirate ship at the imperial city waterfront, for one) and that seemed to have taken alot of the load off.

I'm running at 1680x1050. Indoors I get 50-100fps and outdoors I get 10-40 FPS.
Grass taking grass off raises it ~18FPS.
Shadow complexity has little to no effect on look, but it costs a few FPS on high, so set it low.
Draw distance on tress doesn't make them pop up out of nowhere. What it does do is affects the distance at which a more detailed texture is put on the tree model. If you set it at about 50% trees about 50-60 feet away will go from dark brown mucky things to lighter brown, normal-mapped bark trees. Going between 0-100 i noticed little impact on FPS
Turning on LOD will cost you 10-15 FPS, but really, it looks so drab without it.
I found turning on water reflection will cost you 5 FPS in the middle of a forest... turn it off if you don't spend much time near water/care how it looks.
Self shadows didn't seem to have much affect on FPS, but they really only detract from the look anyways. They tend to just make the whole model really dark or the shadows don't feel like they're in the right place.
Specular distance... no clue what the hell it does nor does it seem to impact FPS.
Character draw distance seems to have little effect on FPS and at max can let you see enemies about 100 yards away.
Object draw affects how far away things like rock formations and tombstones appear. Maxing it costs about 3-4 FPS, but I think its worth it to avoid popups.
Item draw doesn't really need to be that far. You can't really see items from far aways anyways, even if you could, you couldn't pick them up. But eitherway, it doesn't seem to affect FPS much.
Canopy shadows will cost you a couple FPS, if you're watching a slideshow, turn them off. It essentailly just draws shadows on the ground from the tree tops.
Shadows on grass is probably what it says. I didn't even think about enabling it because grass is cripling enough without realtime dynamic shadowing.
Theres some of the big things I can think of.

Shamelessly copied from the Oblivion Settings Guide (http://ideveloper.pandora-studios.com/files/OblivionSettingsGuide.txt)
NVIDIA card Coolbits tweak
This is one of the greatest driver tweaks I have ever seen. At first, I couldn't believe my results.
But the benchmarks don't lie; I nearly doubled my framerates after applying this tweak. There is no
noticeable drop in quality and no apparent side effects. I encourage everyone to apply this tweak.
It really is pretty unbelievable. Steps:
1. Download and install the latest NVIDIA ForceWare drivers.
2. Download and install the "Coolbits" registry tweak:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815
(To install, unzip then double-click the .reg file to apply the registry mod)
3. Go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings tab -> Advanced -> GeForce XXXX (your card model)
4. Expand "Performance & Quality Settings"
5. Click on "Additional Direct3D Settings"
6. Change "Max Frames to render ahead" from 3 to 0.
7. Click "Apply" then "OK" to exit the settings page.
Start Oblivion and note the huge, huge difference in input responsiveness and framerate consistency.
Please note that I have heard that 7xxx card users have not been seeing much improvement from this
tweak. It may only relate to 6xxx series cards and below.

No... quest goes like this -
You find it this girl is kidnapped, she went to Hackdirt to deliver some goods. You go there, find her horse, no one wants to talk about her... except one guy. He tells you how outsides burned their town, he hates them as much as everyone else, but that he dosen't agree with sacrificing an innocent girl to the Deep Ones. You can find the Deep Ones bible in the church, some kind of freaky religion. The dude gives you a key to go underground to the caverns, you fight the brethern plus the townspeople, find the girl and that's it. You never meet the Deep Ones, the quest never goes any further, it really sucks.

Wow...Oblivion looks awesome now on an X1600 Pro. Wow does that make a world of difference. All that's left is to find a way to make it run faster, as I still only get like 20-25 FPS everywhere. But it looks amazing and it's playable at this point, so I'm happy.

Ok, so what's the deal with stealing? I break into someone's shop, expecting to find that awesome weapon or piece of armor they want to sell me for 6500 gold, but instead the shops are just full of leather, iron, and steel garbage.
When do I start getting more powerful weapons, as well? Kind of sucks I just can't find them in a shop.

I use the XPTC guide on there every time I reformat. Lots of nice tweaks, helps quite a bit.
Now, back to Oblivion.
When do I start getting more powerful weapons, as well? Kind of sucks I just can't find them in a shop.
I got most of my stuff off of bandits, mauraders and rogues. They attack you on roads and some ruins. I killed a couple and got some daedric armor off of them. Is there anything better?
Okay, I wanna hear what you guys have done for fun that is part of the regular gameplay. For instance, I collected several hunderd (600ish) bottles of different alcohols and dumped them on the floor of my shack house on the waterfront. I then proceeded to fire ball them to see the physics effect. Well as cool as it is it causes so much lag, rendering a couple hundred bottles flying and calculating the phyics strains my computer quite a bit.
I also dump stuff the roofs on the water front. Such as cups and plates. Also, in one town I was able to jump on the roofs and jump on the town wall and then jump out with out using a door, it messes up bad. It shows nothing but the foliage. The ground is invisible even though you can walk on it. You can move around and it moves you on the map and you can discover places as well. But you will see nothing and feel nothing but foliage. You could potentially use this method to safley discover everything but I think that ruins half the fun as all you see are trees and shrubs.

Theres a glitch in the the game where if you draw your bow, go to your journal, unequip your arrows and then try and drop an item it drops as many of that item as you have arrows. I used it to drop 1000 sigil stones. It crashed my game hard... I also did it with a stack of different arrows and it was hysterical. It made the snake of arrows that thrashed around my house exploding everywhere. Then I went to a merchants and dropped about 500 tower sheilds. The filled a room about 4 feet deep and then poured out the door and down the stairs.

So here seems to be the three main files...

Extract them to (probably...)

The start the game with the launcher and click on data files. DLC horse armor should be in there, make sure its active and you should be set (hopefully...).

I downloaded it off you Kayden and the game definitely accepted it as the real thing, but I need to get a horse first to get the armor put on it. As soon as I get one, I'll let you know if it actually worked. I'm fairly sure it's fine since it did tell me about the quest when I started the game up.

I downloaded it and seems to be working fine. The game froze for a 10 seconds or a so a couple times after I installed the mod but who knows if that was related to the horse armor pack or just a game freeze. Also had my first crash to desktop today.
I bought a nice black horse for 5 grand before I got the armor. I'm not sure I really like the look of the steel armor though. The back side (which is what we see most of the time) is very plain looking.
I can't wait til they fix the memory leak. I start the game with just a little lag in the busy areas but after an hour it becomes unplayable until I restart the game. I also found a glitch by the east gate at Cherodil (spelling?). I exited the city's east gate and fell through the bridge into the ditch.

I'm a nice guy so I can't steal a horse lol. Although I got in trouble for getting on the Weynon Priory horse that thye gave me. Darn glitch.
My first horse was a painted one for $500 but I didn't want to get armor for it since it wasn't going to be my main horse for the long haul. I found a place that sold white horses for $4,000 but they said they were only the 2nd fastest horse and I want the best damn horse in all the land :). So found the black ones for $5000 and apparently they're the best you can get, at least for speed.
Maybe I'm having issues after just an hour because my PC barely meets recommended requirements. Definitely notice a gradual slowdown the longer I play though.

I'm thinking of upgrading my video card.
My system specs are:
Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz HT
2.5 Gb RAM (2 gb of which are Corsair) ^_^
128 Mb ATI Radeon x300/x550 series
the graphics card is the only weak link in my system.
Would this card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150130) be a good buy?

Not bad, and pretty cheap actually.
However, at this point, I personally wouldn't go anything less than the 7XXX series, as the 6XXX series is virtually out of date now/will be soon.

I have my card overclocked a little bit. I don't have it on the lowest settings but close to low. I have the resolution at 720x576 but showing distant landscape. It runs smoothly for a while until a leak starts bogging it down.

Just join the thieves guild. You can buy some before you really even join. When you are about to do the quest to get into the guild you can buy tons of lockpicks and when you are in the guild you can buy them as well. Just get a beggar to like you then ask about the Gray Fox. You will be given some information and then you will talk to a guy who gives you the quest to join and sells tons of lockpicks.
Also, there is a quest for a daedric shrine that gives you a skeleton key. A lockpick that can be reused.

You have to be able to access the Arcane University, then go in the Praxatorium or something similarly named. You can only make spells with an ability that you already know and are able to cast, however.
Example: The only spell you know is Weak Fireball. The only effect you will be able to use to make a spell is Fire Damage.

Innocent? They were all guilty... of not getting out of the way of my sword!
I wouldn't be surprised if my murders were near the tripple digits. I only got caught for 3 of them, none of which were really my fault. Twice it was a bug were I got in trouble for killing people that attacked me and then once it was from killing the guy with the magic arrow. I shot him in the dark, in bushes from 200 yards away while the guard wasn't looking and I still got in trouble. Just a bug in the game >_<.
Actually, my renown is over 100. My infamy is only at 55-ish. Its funny though, because I have most of my skills so high that everyone comments on something different. One guy will say 'go away scum' and then next will check out my legs and then another will say I look really smart. I like the "you've got pretty nimble fingers... what have you been getting into?" line.

Looked through gamefaqs. Pretty useless at this point.
Here's the thing:
Character is level 7, and I have attempted to do the "close the oblivion door" dealio in Kvatch several times. Every time I get to the blood tower/phallus of fear/whatever, I get my a** handed to me by two dark knight-types in a hallway. Now, I know the enemies are supposed to scale to your level, but apparently they don't scale all the way down to "retard."
So, is there a certain level one's character should actually be at before attempting this quest? Or should I just spend my time gathering clover berries and stinkwort instead?
Genocidal
04-18-2006, 08:05 AM
Try scaling the difficulty down a few notches. I know I got my ass handed to me a few times when I went into my first Oblivion gate. If you don't want to do that though, go ahead and level up to a point where your main skills make most other encounters a breeze -- may be different depending on your skill set. Also, if you just raise the skills without actually raising your level, I'm farily sure that the enemies stay scaled to your current level and not your actual level.

Morrowind had all kinds of mods.. some added more extensive crafting to the game, others added random npc generation(and traveling npcs) to make the world seem less static.
Still other mods allowed for fillable bottles and containers, some gave the npcs daily schedules (something that they lacked originally.. they just kinda milled around regardless of the time of day), one mod called "better bodies" replaced the character models in the game with better looking ones, and several people made better bodies compatible clothing mods.
Still other mods re-textured the entire game with higher resolution textures and a whole bunch of other tweaks and improvements. Some mods even fixed spelling errors and typos left in conversation dialogues and in some of the world's books.
Here's a list of just some of the mods made for Morrowind..

Well. I installed Oblivion last night thinking I would spend the long Memorial Day weekend playing it and I just can't seem to get into it. I haven't played any of the other Elder scroll games, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing. I got out of the prison and delivered the amulet.
How do people usually play - first person or third person. I want to play from the third person perspective but I need the crosshairs of the FP perspective.
I'm a Wood Elf with Archer profession under the sign of Warrior. I don't know if I should be wearing metal armor or leather armor. I keep collecting stuff but can't find anywhere to sell it. I made some poision to add to my arrows but don't really have a clue what I'm doing.
Please help me to get into this game - based upon eveyone's comments, it's a great game and I want to enjoy it. Any comments on how to better enjoy the game?

Hey there, in my opinion a lot of the questions you asked are part of the freedom of the game that this game offers. Honestly with all those questions you are gonna do whatever it is that you want to do. That is probably what people enjoy the most about it, you can really shape you character the way to want. But here's some of my opinions.
I think in playing it first person is more effective in the long run for the reasons you stated. Third person just seems to be useful if you need to see your surroundings better.
When you get out of sewer you should have been near the Imperial City where you can sell you goods to merchants there. You can not sell stolen goods (from NPCs not enemies) until you join the Theive's Guild and get a fence. This can be done in Imperial City too.
The armor question is really up to you, as a theif I chose to use light armor as it allowed me to carry more when I stole. Also in the end when you reach expert level with light or heavy they balance out to be even with the bonuses as light armor gets 50% damage improvemnt and heavy gets 50% less encumberance. So its up to you in what you think you need in the beginning.
Also beware that the enemies level up when you do and that was something I did not know until it was too late. This is specifically regarding the Kvatch quest which occurs once you deliver the amulet which you face a horde on enemies. I waited until I was level 20 to do this and had to face some of the hardest enemies in the game and all the support NPCs died. If you do this early you face pretty simple enemies. I didn't know this and it was really hard for me, especially as I was an archer who had only 'okay' blade skills.
In the end though, just do whatever you want to do. Go to any town and talk to people and you will get involved in different stuff. I never did the main quest for a long time and had fun exploring, and honestly I'm not even close to beating the game and I feel like I got my money's worth.

Thanks evophile for your response.
I "found" Imperial City - when I got out of the sewers I just headed out on the quest and never stopped in the city.
I am going with Light Armor since that's a major skill for me and helps me level up.
I wanted to use a bow but found it doesn't seem to do much damage - an imp takes like 5 arrows to kill. But then I found out about sneaking and now I can get a 3x multiplier when attacking while sneaking.
But what about all the crap that I find - spoons, cups, fabric, and non-armor clothing - is that stuff useful in any way?
Do you have to dismount a horse in order to attack?
I apparently stole some items (inadverently) and was being chased by guards on a road and in the city. Couldn't figure out what I did wrong or what item was stolen - ended up having to do jail time... sucks because my skills when down after it.
Do all stores offer the same $ for items - is there any point to shopping around to sell stuff within a particular city?
Thanks
evophile

Hey glad to help. Yeah bows can be tough if you fight up front, but eventually you do get strong enough, but like you said stealth is the key. Adding posion to your arrow helps a lot too with the 3x multipier.
Cups and crap are totally worthless. The non armor is just there for fun I think, but I've never done anything with it.
Stealing. When your cursor is has a "red" hand over an item instead of the "tan" color one, that means if you take that item you stole it. Also if you look in your inventory, the stolen item will have a red hand on it. If someone is around to see you do that most will call the guards on you. If you take something without anyone seeing you, you are generally safe. Also if someone sees you breaking into a house you can get in trouble too.
Selling and stores is determined by your Mercantile level. When in shops you'll probably notice the "haggle" button. From there you can try to get a better price to buy and sell from that merchant. You can generally do this a little with everyone, but it depends a lot of level. And each merchant only has a certain amount of gold they will use, so don't sell a 1000 item to a merchant who only offers 600 max. I honestly still havent figured out who has the most capital.
For example if you are a Journeyman of Mercantile you can most likely out haggle a merchant who is only an Apprentice or Novice. But it will be a lot harder to get a better deal from Experts or Masters.
Also, for everyone it looks like the next download will be ready soon.

Mehrunes' Razor is supposed to be the biggest dungeon in the game and you can get an item that kills enemies instantly (probably severly limited I bet). Although this one cost $2.99.
