View Full Version : The Official PC Topic for TES IV: Oblivion

Here it is, the official PC Topic, to not only talk about the game, but upcoming mods as well, using the TES Construction set. Since the 360 dosen't have the Construction Set, and as such our experience with the game will be drastically different from them in due time, I figure an official PC thread is in order.
So... I am pumped. I'm also pumped that the LE for the PC is only $60 (even though I'll find a way to get it cheaper!!).
Modders turned Morrowind from a great game into an amazing one, I cannot wait to see what they will do to Oblivion.

Just out of curiousity, what kind of mods were made for Morrowind?

Morrowind had all kinds of mods.. some added more extensive crafting to the game, others added random npc generation(and traveling npcs) to make the world seem less static.
Still other mods allowed for fillable bottles and containers, some gave the npcs daily schedules (something that they lacked originally.. they just kinda milled around regardless of the time of day), one mod called "better bodies" replaced the character models in the game with better looking ones, and several people made better bodies compatible clothing mods.
Still other mods re-textured the entire game with higher resolution textures and a whole bunch of other tweaks and improvements. Some mods even fixed spelling errors and typos left in conversation dialogues and in some of the world's books.
Here's a list of just some of the mods made for Morrowind..

Don't forget the mod that added about 100 new monsters into the game, either.

So basically the mods are more just tweaks rather than total conversions? I dunno, I think I'd rather stick with the 360 version cause I know that will run well but I don't know how it will run on my PC.

The mods were tweaks, yes, but huge tweaks that drastically impacted how the game looked and played. Some of them may as well have been total conversions... one mod that I mentioned added 100 new monsters to the game, which pretty much changed the entire game.
I don't think anyone did a total conversion for Morrowind... nobody really needed to.
I went from the PC version, to playiing it on Xbox, and it felt so...limiting. I sold the Xbox copy the next day.

Wow I never did beat Morrowind. I just lost interest after a while. How were the two expansion packs? Any good?
I did however Beat Arena (back when it was new) without cheating and some of those damn riddles were hard. I also layed the crap out of Daggerfall but I made it to the end and then there was some glitch that stopped me from opening the casket? I vagualey remember this as it was a few years and many games ago.

Everyone forgot to mention that there are going to be official mods for Oblivion that you can buy. Since they're being made by the company, I'd assume they could be major in what they add to the game, especially since they expect us to shell out money for them.
Hopefully one of the mods will be to make it so you can fight while on a horse. Although they'll have to do something to make it so it's not super easy using that strategy. More "pikemenish" warriors/creatures?

Here's a part of an interview - http://www.waiting4oblivion.com/fan_interview3.html
The announcement of the availability of regularly produced downloadable available content which will be charged for generated much controversy. Can you describe the overall strategy / philosophy behind the new approach? Is it purely a lucrative endeavor?
We are taking a different approach than we did with Morrowind. We want to be able to have content on a more regular basis and be able to dedicate the necessary resources to doing them at a certain level. Charging a small amount for this extra content allowed us to do this. Doing them for free this time around wasn't really something we contemplated. We didn't like the way it worked before and wanted to change it and do it better. Much like the game, if people think a plugin is worth it, they'll get it. If not, they won't.

I had such a blast creating my own house with the construction kit for Morrowind... I finished the Fighters Guild and Blades in the main game and was close to finishing Bloodmoon but lost my save game. I want to get back into it but Tribunal and Bloodmoon require high level characters and that would be a long, long time before I could get into it again.
Ah well, Oblivion ho! I can't wait for tomorrow!

The game will auto detect a 7800 GTX at "ultra high" settings..
I should be getting it within a couple of hours.. I'll post screenshots and impressions when I do.

Really? That's pretty awesome then... if 7800GTX's automatically fall under ultra high (most games recognize it as high rather than ultra), then I'd assume that Oblivion's well optimized... which is important.

Picked it up this morning (10:00 am) at CompUSA in Tustin, CA.
Wasn't on the shelves so I got a representative to search it on the computer for me, he said it wasn't there. So I start to walk out the door when the manager comes up and asks what game I was looking for, I tell him and these two workers at the cash register tell him that they have it. Stoked.
I'm running it with Max. settings with HDR - enabled.
Runs well on:
3.4 Ghz
3 Gb Ram
Geforce 4 7600 GT

I'm running it on:
Athlon 1600+ (which is actually below minimum system requirements)
GeForce 6800
1G RAM
and it runs very well at 1024x768 with the graphics options set on the autodetect level of 'High'. The only performance problems I've seen so far is that it takes a while to open up my inventory/map/status windows. This is definitely a well-optimized game.

I'd disagree: so far, to me, it feels far less 'consolish' (if that's a word) than Morrowind. The controls are still extremely simplified, but the scope of the game is clearly far more ambitious, much closer to the level of Daggerfall.
Its still far too early to tell if the game will stand up as well to extended playing as Morrowind did, but so far, its looking pretty good.

The inventory system is horrible... I can't hit I just to get to my character inventory, or J for my journal, I have to hit Tab and go through a convoulted menu system just to get what I need.
Morrowind really took advantage of the fact I have a keyboard, Oblivion does not, using barely half the keyboard, maybe 10 keys top.
This is probably my only main fault, is that the inventory system sucks.

Surely the game is flexible enough to let you bind a key for inventory. Morrowind was known for letting you alter the game any way you want, after all.

Surely the game is flexible enough to let you bind a key for inventory. Morrowind was known for letting you alter the game any way you want, after all.
What I'm saying is that there is no bindable keys for seperate parts of your inventory. There is no J for Journal, there is no I for Inventory, there is no M for Map.
It all goes through Tab, and you have to work your way through this menu system. I understand why it would be that way on, say, an Xbox 360, but cmon, this is a keyboard, make sure of all the keys!
Other then the inventory system, which I'll probably get used to or hope someone mods it, the game is amazing.
BTW, speaking of maps, the map system they have in place is worthless, imo.

Yeah, each skill has 5 training levels, and when you gain enough skill to get to the next level, you generally gain new moves or advantages. Looking in the manual , hand-to-hand seems to gain the most moves of any combat skill, as well as a chance to disarm, knock-down, or stun your opponent.

They did, 1680x1050 is more playable on my machine now(still drops into the high teens in dense foliage, especially when fighting.. but I can deal with the drops if I'm not watching a FPS counter because it looks so damned beautiful).. I've decided just to cut off FRAPS and deal with the game itself, rather than worrying about framerates. If it gets so choppy that I can't play the game, I'll do something about it, but I'm done with numbers.. I've spent more time tweaking my settings than playing the game.

I got a chance to try the game with the aforementioned 7800GTX and it runs really, really well with Vsynch off (and I haven't noticed any tearing with it off.) Oh, and this game is fucking awesome. I can't believe how fast time passes when you're playing it.
Thanks for the tip. Just picked the game up today. I'll have to update my drivers tonight and turn off V-synch.

Well, i updated, installed, and fired it up.
So far so good. One thing I don't like is that they do a poor job of explaining things to start. I got killed by rats three times in row before I could figure out how to strip corpses and equip items.
Is there a way to see your frame rate in game? A consol command or series of hot keys. My frame rate has been pretty good so far, but I've been slinking in the dungeon and only fought a few rats. I still need to make my character proper.
I decided to go with a Breaton because I always liked their magic resistance and the few extra sp. I'll probably go with light armor to use magic. I read that heavy armor has a negative effect on magic. It would be nice to be able to use heavy armor and magic. But I dont know how much of a hit it'll be.

"FF" icons in the system tray
Some users have reported having numerous "FF" icons in their taskbar during or after playing Oblivion. These icons are from a seperate video/audio decoder you may have installed in the past called "FFDShow." This program is processing the sound files for Oblivion, which some users have reported slows down the game, and can leave the icons in their system tray. Simply moving the mouse over those icons will get rid of them after you stop playing Oblivion. Uninstalling FFDShow can fix this, but it is NOT necessary. You can follow the steps below to tell FFDShow not to handle sound for Oblivion.
Instructions for disabling the FFDShow for Oblivion without fully removing it:
1. Click Start
2. Click "All Programs" (or just Programs, depending on the version of Windows, whether they're using "classic," etc.)
3. Go to the ffdshow folder.
4. Click "Audio decoder configuration."
5. In the left hand pane, click "Info & debug." This is the second entry in the list.
6. In the right hand pane, near the bottom, find a check box labelled "Don't use ffdshow in:"
7. Check that box, and in the text box underneath (it lights up when you check the check box), add "oblivion.exe" (don't include the quotes). If there is already something in that box, put a semi-colon ( ; ) after what's already there, and oblivion.exe after that. Do NOT use spaces, since ffdshow will think that's part of the filename. A valid entry would be "explorer.exe;oblivion.exe" (without quotes).
8. Finally, click "Ok" and start Oblivion.
***
The thing is, when I get to step 6, there is no "Don't use ffdshow in:" check box.
Anyone know what i need to fix this? I tried upgrading ffdshow but that just made things worse. I lost the ability to edit the audio options. Then I reverted back. Is there a specific text file I can manually edit the fix into?

And this is the year 2006. People shouldn't be required to read manuals.
Yeah, the manuals not huge. how els ethey fit it in the little box. But it's in some ways more descriptive than the in game menus. For example, itt has more detail in the manual than it does in the in game description for the races. And a lot of basic stuff is buried in very small type.

Man, I have a relatively high end system (AMD 3200+, 2 gigs of RAM, GeForce 7800GT), but Oblivion is kicking my system's ass!
I absolutely love the game so far, though. The characters feel a lot more specialized this time around. Being a Thief feels a hell of a lot more like being a Thief than it did in Morrowind...
Ditto for a Mage. So happy they balanced the game out.
I haven't played it as much as I've expected, because I've been kinda busy. But man, I see myself locking some nice hours into it this weekend.
Very satisfied with what I've seen so far.
I'm gonna try and avoid this topic, because inevitably, shit is going to be spoiled. But damn this game rocks......!

I had such a problem with this game at first. I had a FX 5200 card, which on the box is sais that it supports all FX cards, but it would just not work. It sucked, I thought I wasted $50. I dont have a lot of money right now to upgrade the video card.
But a friend of mine let me borrow his radeon 9800, and I can finally play the game. What a relief.
Hope everyone has fun playing the game. Anybody have any favorite player types yet besides the one mentioned. I am talking about for example a mage, or theif etc...

Okay, here's what I did.
I had the Mastroka whatever codec pack installed which included an older version of FFDshow. So I opeened up "ffdshow audio" and followed the instructions given. Unfortunately, there was no button from step six.
So then I went to ffdshow proper and installed an update. That screwed my whole system up. I couldn't get the au8do configuration to come up at all. And the only thing that worked was the "Configuration" screen. And I still had the problems.
So then I uninstalled the update and tried it again. Still no luck.
Then I uninstalled the Mastroka codec pack completely to wipe the older versions of ffdshow off my drive. Then I installed the latest version of ffdshow and that fixed the problem.
In other news, I'm playing at one notch above the normal difficulty level. And I don't know if it's a lot tougher than normal or if I just suck. The first creature I came across while leaving the prison was a crab. A CRAB! And he kicked my ass twice. Before I decided to back up and flame ball his crusty claws.
I've come across my second open encounter and it's a wolf. I'm too slow to run away, so I have to get past him. I've tried twice now but I was just tired last night. Going to try again later today.
OIn other news, I'm also disappointed you can't change the mouse button configurations. At least, I haven't found out a way to do so yet. A much more optimal setup would be if you could use the mouse wheel to move between your hot keyed spells, items etc. Then click once to select. Alternatively, when not after a selection, have each click cast a spell. That way I could swing with the left, block with the right, and cast with my middle mouse button.
Edit: i figured out how to assign mouse keys in oblivion.
Three more things. I'd like to post some screens. Don't know what the print screen command is in obv.
I was reading on the oblvion forum that changin the FOV to 90 in the game will boost frame rate from 5-10 fps. Just bring up the console and type FOV 90.
I'm still trying to fidn the framerate command. I heard it was TRD but didn't find it.
I'd search around on the oblivion forum but their search isn't working. So I have to muck around manually.

IIRC, Roufuss used $10 worth of Reward Zone Certificates while I used $5 (hence the $35 I paid.) 1. Yes, you can pricematch something that's more than an hour away. I've used the Fry's ad countless times despite the place being far, far away from where I live and it's never been questioned.
2. The Friday Fry's ad expires on Tuesday of the next week, but it's not as though BB actually pays attention to that. Nobody's done more than glance at the item in question in the ad. For me, the Friday ad comes in the Chicago Tribune and I get a smaller ad on Wednesdays and Sundays in the Naperville Sun (the more local paper)... so that hopefully tells you where you'd be able to find it. Of course, you'd have difficulty if you don't have a Fry's in your state, but BB probably won't give you any problems with pricematching either way.

I figured out why i was getting my ass kicked. I hd set the difficulty to 80%. 50% is normal. I thought the slider was notched like veasy/easy/norm/hard/vhard. But it's a % slider. So i reduced the difficulty to 60%. Norm is 50%. That helped a lot. Now it's challenging but not enough where I get my ass kicked.

The key is to not go overboard on the distance. Keeping the distances for stuff like grass and objects at the default really does help the frame rate. Turning V synch off is a must since that basically doubles your frame rate and I really haven't noticed any "tearing" without the option turned on. I also opted for bloom lighting rather than HDR an I turned the specular distance all the way up and put on 4X AA... so that's definitely better than HDR's lighting. I'm using a 7800GTX 256MB, so decide for yourself how those tips apply to you.

So you've never shared something with a friend?
Or borrowed a game for an extended period of time and beat the hell out of it?
This is personally the first time I've "jointly" bought someone with someone, but people go in together and games all the time and share it. For instance, a friend and his buddy both payed half for Half Life 2.
And to any pirate comments: to be honest, I probably would have pirated the game, but I got a letter from my ISP like literally a week before this came out about copyright infringement. I download a lot but I still buy more than my fair share of stuff. Oblivion was kind of the exception to the rule, because this is a game I would have legitimately paid full price for, but I was extremely strapped for cash because I'm in college and get paid $5.15 (I'm not kidding) an hour.
I realize that doesn't excuse piracy, etc, but... whatever. Giving my cousin $15 for a game is better than straight-up downloading off the internet.
Obviously, I could defend myself, but then I can realistically assume the people I am talking to are probably just being hypocritical. Have they never had someone copy a CD or game for them before? I would really doubt they had never done it.
So you guys turned distant viewing off, then? That's one thing I adore about this game, Reasonably enough, it is going to be an absolute system hog, though. So you just set the view distance down (thus eliminating the "view forever" feature)? I don't know if I could do that! It looks too pretty.
I'm playing with most settings on high and AA on 2x. I get some pretty bad stuttering when I'm outside, though. I'd say my frame rate is only like 15-20 when I'm outside or around really huge buildings in a town.
I am having just a fucking blast with this, though.

I have three I play... I switch up every couple hours:
- A Khajitt thief
- A Breton warlock
- An Imperial good-guy warrior
All of them are pretty much dominant and heavily skewed towards that class... I mean, I made custom ones, but none of them are very balanced. Unlike Morrowind, I want to play as really specific characters this time around (that wasn't really possible in the last game since sneaking around and magic sucked)
Every so often a game comes along that makes me yearn for a gaming comp. I guess the time has come.
I'm considering:
AMD 64 3700+
1 gig RAM
Geforce 6800GS CO SE

My system is quite similar, except you have a little faster CPU which I believe will help you more then another GB of ram in this game. The frames in my game are: 20-35 outside, 30-50 in town, and dungeons 40+. I have some settings on which brings frames done quite a bit but I like the graphics more then frames. If it was a Shooter i would probaly go for more frames. Now 20 may sound low but with this one coolbit tweak everyone is talking about, it really didnt boost my frames but it made them smoother and the mouse smooth so 20fps feels like 30fps actually.
IMHO, I would go for a 7800 instead of the 6800...but if money is a problem the 6800 will be just fine.
Edit: Some reason signature not showing, go up 4 posts to see my system.

I honestly wouldn't bother with AGP anymore. I'd really recommend replacing the mobo and getting a PCI-express card. AGP cards simply aren't worth it anymore.

The thing is, despite knowing this, it's just completely out of the price range I can afford to update the mobo and get a PCI-e card, since I would then need to get a new processor too. I've already seen people online who have the 7800 GS overclocked card from eVGA, and Oblivion plays on the highest settings very smoothly. That's all I'm asking for, and to let me get through the next year at most of games. And I don't even need to play at the highest settings, as long as it runs smoothly. I just can't even get Oblivion to run smoothly on this computer right now, where the only weak link I can see is the video card, as the rest is a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor and a gig of DDR400 RAM.

Also a random question: I dont have a 360 but i have an HD tv. Whats the process of getting the video out to run on the HD Tv? I have done it on my old analog tv, but Im not sure if the HD would change everything which im sure it would. And would that even run well, Being the Tvs resolutions are higher.

It is so hard to resist "cheating."
I am SO tempted to just make a shitload of potions (which is effortless) to raise my alchemy ability to allow to me make valuable potions which will, in turn, allow me to sell them at high prices and get a lot of money in return... but I feel cheap doing that.
What are your views on this? I like my guy to get better as I use abilities (and I never train), but the fact that alchemy is almost effortless to level up kind of spoils it and ruins the fun...

I'm stuck on a stupid quets where you have to find this missing painting in the Chorrol Castle. I know what's up. There's this one lady whpo took it.
1) She told me she hated the ainting (Motive)
2) She lied about her whereabouts that night. (She said she was Stargazing when it was rainign out.)
3) I found a painting where she was hanging out a lot.
4) And then painting gear hidden in her room. So she's obviously an artist. But I don't know why she's hiding it. or why she bears a grudge.
Anyway, now I'm stuck. And I don't want to move on until I solve this. I''ve searched every section of the castle, talked to everyone, I'm now down to searching for secret compartments.

At the lowest they still add enough to make the whole thing worth it. Just feed on beggar since they are every where.

I was actually considering getting that Asus card. I've been told by some people on the Oblivion message board that it's actually a really good card and that with some quick and easy overclocking, it runs Oblivion really well. Add that in with the fact it's only $169, and I'm almost sold.
Woah check that card out at 512 mb of ram on it for a nice price... Im going to research this card a bit... ill report my findings...
ASUS Geforce 6800 N6800
Chipset Manufacturer NVIDIA
GPU Geforce 6800
Core clock 350MHz
PixelPipelines 12
Memory Clock 540MHz
Memory Size 512MB
Memory Interface 128-bit
Memory Type GDDR2
3D API DirectX DirectX 9
OpenGL OpenGL 1.5
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v48/licemasta/CAG/Cardspeeds.jpg
Ok so check out the comparisons. You can see they put in some really slow Memory in it. 540 mhz. I wonder why they went that slow. That mixed with the 12 pipelines doesnt make me so hot and botherd over this card as much. The 512 is nice, but the differnce is going to be negligible. My guess is this card will clock around if not a tad lower that a regular 6800. The 512 gets you all excited like, the cheap price makes you question it, and the specs make you say aha!
But none the less this card could most definately be over clocked. Unlock the other 4 pipelines which are on it but not open. Over clock the memory to the normal speeds and you should have a nice little card with a good price. I would maybe think of putting on a fan thats better for removing heart off the cards if your going to OC it all.
You know if I had to buy a new card and was on a budget i would definately consider this path...

I can't stop playing this game. I hated MorrowWind because all you did was walk for an hour to the quest and kill 1 enemy on the way and then do the quest and spend an hour walking back.
The fast move system and horses make things a lot more fun. You get to the action right away. However, I'm like level 14 and the dynamic NPC leveling is starting to kick my ass. If I get caught by 3 or more mobs I get raped. Stupid me though, I took heavy armor as a major skill and I'm running around wearing the Black Hand robes... stupid +11 bonuses.
I don't really get alchemy. I know you're supposed to mix crap to make potions, but where do you get recipies? What are the amblic, mortar and retorts for? Do they all do the same thing?
Soul collecting is kinda hazy for me too. Do gems fill up in one shot or is it cumulative? Like I've got a Grand Gem that says its current level is common, if I capture more will it raise the level or is it a one shot deal?

Yeah, that's a problem.
Look, I think Oblivion is a greta game. But it does have some problems that the reviews seem to overlook. There are the bugs with the AI. The dynamic mobs can be screwy. There's no recepie book for Alchemy. Poor explanations for some things. Not everything shows up on the maps like shrine.
I think the game is greta but it does have some issues.
Going back to the soul gems, I have yet to find a mage that actually sells the soul collecting spell. So I haven't tested it out in practice. But from my understanding, you cats the spell. Then you have the soul gems in your backpack. the spell lasts for say, 30 seconds. If you kill your enemy in that time, your gems fills with the soul of that enemy. More powerful enemies need more powerful soul gems. Then you can use the gems to recharge weapons.
That's my understanding, but I haven't actually done it yet.

Click on a alchemy creating object(Mortar and Pestle, Amblic, Retorts, ????forgot????). Then it will be a screen with 4 slots. Pick an item and you will see several of the 4 attributes it has(you can see more as you increase in level). Then add another item, when they attributes match you can make a potion. The 9600 is the midrange of last gen and the 9800 is upperrange of last gen, there is a difference between the two but they still get smoked by the current midrange cards.

So theres no difference between the contraptions?
For soul gems- How do you know how good a soul is? I haven't been able to capture a human soul (says no gem big enough) but I just got some black soul gems that I'm betting may work. Is there anyway to keep from getting a crappy soul in a good gem? I have a Grand gem that contains a 'petty' soul =(. Additionally- I have a Daedric soulgem that I got from the daedroth you summon from the main quest... is that special beyond being able to use it for the story line?

Yes, a system where when you make a potion it is added to a list. Then you can click on the list to make that potion anytime as long as you have the proper items. Although I doubt that we will see this implemented by the patches I think that we can rely on the mod community to fix things like this. I would post around some modding forums somewhere and ask for this, it would be a great mod.

Right. He's in the town west of Chorrol between there and Anvil. Starts with an 'S' and has that paranoid guy. I literally found him last night after I made my post.
My problem now is that I've been to four towns. Yet I haven't found a single novice Mysticism or Conjuration spell. I've found novice alteration spells. But without any novice Myst or Conj spells I can't even practice to improve my skill to apprentice and use more spells. I have to train. Which I find very, very, very annoying sicne I'd rather not spend money training something so easily practiced. I can't believe they don't have any, but I can't find them.

Maybe you can fill a gem. For example, maybe you can collect a bunch of petty souls to fill a grand gem. I'm assuming no if you can only fill one gem with one sould as mentioned by a previous poster. But that sucks if you're wasting expensive and grand soul gems on goblins and other weak monetsers. Even if you have petty soul gems available in your pack.
I would think that it would fill your smallest gems first. Maybe you just didn't have any more room, activated the spell, and it just filled the gem.

Soul gems can be used to recharge your magical equipment, and depending on the level of the soul, it will recharge a different amount. The Uses shows how many times you can use it, obviously -- but for higher powered enchantments, you'll get a lower amount of uses out of the same amount of charge in an item.

Each towns mager guild sells different spells, basically every guild has a different spell type. Some times they slightly cross with some spells but the major in one type.
Charge is jsut charge. Say an item has a 1000 charge. It may have abilites that are either on hit or on use. They also have different costs so an ability that costs 100 will have 10 uses.

I've been to the conjurere, mysticism, alteration, and destruction towns. I haven't found a minor spell in either of those two types I posted about earlier.
I may have more lcuk in the capital. but I've been laying low. It might not be a good idea to hang out in the same city where I witnessed the emperor get killed by a cult.

I have a bout 50lbs of soul gems. I steal them every chance I get.
I had several dozen gems before I even got the soul trap spell.
I think the petty greats where gems I found like that. :-\
Anyone else hate trying to pick a lock? It says click when the tumbler is at the top and I do and the pick still breaks. :bomb: Some times I can just click right though a very hard in one shot and other times I have to reload 14 times just to get an average.
Oh yea, Don't level until you use your training!
You can train 5 skills per level. They arent cumulative so use them up! Use them on minor skills you don't use a lot, but do use. I use lock picking magic but dont use any other alteration magic, so I use a lot of my training on alteration.

Btw, Is Glathair the paranoid half elf really onto something or is he just crazy.
It would be cool if he was actually onto something. But I haven't found anything and thats after following everyone. I did break into his house and stole his notes. Not to mention, the 800 gold he had hiddne in his waste basket! And I stole an item from the suille broths that enttles me to stuff for my house. When my ccursor went over it, the note was valed at 1600 gold. But in my inventory it just says zero.
The trick to lock picking is the speed of the tumbler. If the tunbler is fast, you gotta click right when it hits the top. if the tumbler is slow, you have to wait a split second. And tumblers in a lock have varying speeds.
I've actually gotten quite good at it.

Hes actually crazy. You can play along with his delusions and he asks you to kill them. At that point you can tell a guard or actually kill them for more money. Course... he only wants them dead because you say they're spying on him. If you say they aren't following him he behalves.

I fought them off with my Daedric Longsword. Took me forever though. After you go through the quest to "fix" the manor it ends up looking really nice. One of if not the best looking house in the game.

Grrrrrr.... I snuck into a castle to steal a ring from a countess. I got past the gaurd no problem, but now hes just standing infront of the only damn exit and wont move. I'm tresspassing so I can't just hit wait. :wall:
 In the Li... the far south L castle... there was an orc wearing a full set of ebony armor (cept the gloves) even a sword and sheild. I snuck up behind her to do a sneak attack and nailed her for 6x damage (my sword does 26 a hit normaly @_@-daedric longsword with fire enchantment) and she said 'hey, that hurt' and just stood there with about half her life. So I hit her again. "Ow, you hit me twice!" but the bitch was still alive! So I hit her a third time and as she was dying, she said "hit me one more time and I'll kill you." Additionally, I did this directly infront of the castle gaurd! No bounty or anything. I think they're racist and hate Orcs.
Oh, theres a quest I know a lot of you will like. Theres a daedroth shrine where you have to kill two village chiefs and make it look like they killed eachother and the two families maul each other. The coolest part is the reward; you get a staff that clones your target and makes the fight their double.

How about Elven or Glass weapons?

Silver will work, as will Daedric or any magically bound weapons (which are Daedric anyways from the look of it). Elven and Glass from what I remember don't.

You have to be a certain level, I think it's around 6 or so before enemies will start carrying them. If you're lucky, a shop might also get some in stock when you're at or above this level.

Out of curiosity, for anyone who actually knows video cards, what do you think of these two cards as a band-aid for now to let me at least be able to play Oblvion around medium settings?

Any help? I don't wanna spend too much as I plan on eventually just getting a new computer (not for another year or two though), so I just need an AGP card that isn't expensive but can get me running Oblivion.

Either will work fust fine, they would run it on medium just fine. I suggest the X1600 as it seems a bit better then the 6800.

My daedric longsword chops them up fairly quickly when the fire enchantment is charged, but when its not they take a lot more hits. I haven't actually used a silver weapon yet. The ebony sword you get from one of the daedra shrines with life steal chews them up. Arrows go right through ghosts I believe, that could be why they don't seem to hurt. Magical bows and arrows sting them well. Cept for cold, the stupid ghosts resist cold.
Far to the south practically due east of Leywin (?) theres the Shrine of Nocturnal, go there to get a quest where the reward is a skeleton key. Its a lockpick that doesn't break. I'm not sure, but I think it also raises your lockpicking skill.
The shrine of Hircine is South East of the Imperial City. The quest for that is killing a unicorn. The reward is crap, but that makes it good for the story line required daedric artifact. Also of note- the unicorn shows the horseshoe when you mouse over it. I was under attack from 2 minotaurs and a wisp at the time, so I couldn't try to get on him... but maybe...
When there are quests that send you into a fort, always look around for a second entrance. There have been two so far where I fought through an entire dungeon to get to someone only to find out that at the end of the dungeon theres a door that brings me out to the world right next to where I went in. The first one was for the Dark Brotherhood when you go to see the guy in the fort. The second was for a daedra shrine mission- I had to find an orb that a mage stole and fight through about 10 rooms of fire and ice atronotchs. :wall: I get to the end and find the mage sleeping. I grabbed the orb and there was a door that took me out 10 feet from the entrance I used- it was just under a bush. Use your close up map to double check for secondary routes.

what kind of FSB do you have on your PC? I have a slightly slower processor than you (p4 2.4), but a lot of games get bottlenecked due to it (part of the reason I want to sell my card and build or buy a new system next year, depending on how much vista costs).
When you get everything up and running, if you could tell me how well the game runs it would be awesome.
Thanks

No prob. I'll let you know when I get it all set up. Right now, I have:
Front Side Bus Information :
FSB Frequency : 200.5 MHz
Bus Speed : 801.8 MHz (QDR)
And I'm getting about 10-15 FPS average. And that's with everything turned down. I do get spikes up in FPS, which is always nice, but it's very random. And I definitely also have textures just disappear when the spike happens, so I think that's cause of the video card.

I kinda thing the speech has to be somewhat computer generated. Either that or they have some damn good compression. I can't imagine them recording the same dialog with 4 or 5 different actors
