It’s hard for me to say whether this item is actually cool and interesting or whether it is something that will appeal only to uber-geeks (like me http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif) that have to own everything even tangentially related to all things produced by Peter Jackson. The cover of this product reminds me of the cover of Mallrats (maybe it’s just the crudeness of the drawing and the inane looks on the faces of the people fleeing) with a lava spewing volcano in the background. King Kong is pictured with his arms raised and he appears to be chasing a number of people which I presume to be Peter Jackson and probable other directors. There is also a crude robot with arms a-flailing and what appears to be the Creature from the Black Lagoon (!) moving about on the right hand side. I am finding ZERO info on this title through IMDB. Soooo… it may be an actual true collectible or might be as worthless as used gum. Caveat emptor!

although Kong was a good movie, to my surpise they managed to fit it on a single disc when the movie was 3 hrs long :O With a extended edition eventually coming down the road, might as well wait right? I would have been really pissed if I have to swap/flip the disc for the second part of the movie. This is also why i haven't bought the LOTR trilogy because of the spread out over two discs :(

Whats the difference between the King Kong 1 and 2 discs?

Does one have a longer, uncut movie, or is the second disc just extras and junk I don't need to pay an extra $8 or $10 for because I'll never watch?

There is an extended cut of the movie coming out later, but the 2-disc out next week just has extras. From Amazon:

Great prices on Quantum Leap (1-3) and Northern Exposure (1-3), but I wonder if they are getting universal drops. I'm half tempted to buy them at Best Buy now and get a pricematch next week, but I really shouldn't be dropping $100 on dvds right now.

Thanks for the post, LP.

Any concrete info on this extended edition? Has it been confirmed? I just did a search and the best I could find was a P.J. interview where he mentioned probably doing one. I know if he wants to do one, they'll most likely let him, but I was just wondering if there was any further confirmation or especially a date on when we can expect it? I'm trying to decide whether to bite on this one this week (I haven't seen the movie at all yet...).

Kong wasn't the hit Universal was expecting. It only made 217 million in the US box office and cost 207 million to make according to IMDB. That's not exactly a major profit and Universal was expecting Titanic size numbers.

Whether or not there will be an extended cut, which Jackson would like to do according to an interview up at IGN, will likely depend on how well the current set sales, so if you pick one up, you'll help the likelyhood of another edition. Jackson also isn't one to repeat special features, so you won't be wasting money with the double dip. Nothing is repeated between the two versions of each Lord of the Rings film. Even the cut of the film is different.
