You want to make sure you get a good receiver primarily. Make sure it has enough inputs for both what you have now and what you intend to buy in the future. At this point you'll want no less than 5.1, but 7.1 could probably be had for a relatively decent price. Make sure you buy something not because it as 100 watts per channel, but has equal amounts of current. The better brands you'd want to keep an eye out for (that you can buy at stores like Good Guys/CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) are Denon, Yamaha, Harman/Kardon, Onkyo. Stay far away from stuff from a company that makes everything from telephones to video games ;) they have no interest in making something of the highest quality. Basically if you're just looking to get one of those home theater in a box deals, I'd say save up more money and buy some sort of package deal at a place like Circuit or Best Buy even. Buy good speaker cables because that's a big part of it too. Hope that helps, I sold audio at Circuit City for over three years, so it's not like I'm just going off to waste time, I think I know a little about what I'm talking about.
