MTV's Stephen Totilo reports on big ideas coming out of the annual Game Developers Conference. Forget the next-gen hoopla expected from Sony and Nintendo later this week, yesterday was all about "Serious Games." Take, for example, an abortion game being developed by Georgia Tech's Experimental Game Lab, where mini-games range from "find a condom" to balancing your reputation with friends, your baby's health and your future earning power. Georgia Tech's Ian Bogost claims that the game's real innovation is its ability to present multiple angles of an issue. The game is designed to change depending on a given player's biases. So, if a player is shown to express pro-life tendencies, the game will stress the importance of personal responsibility and adoption.

Also on tap where presentations that featured GPS-enabled cell phone games that encourage obese youths to actively explore their neighborhoods while hunting for virtual prizes, technology that monitors players' brainwaves and rewards those that are paying attention, and a climbing wall that doubles as a game controller.

I love transfering real life issues to the digital world. Eventually there will be tons of these hyper-realistic games. Just think, one day we can be yelling at our televisions as we try to find out what the hell an "Alternative Minimum Tax" is as we fill out our standard 1040A forms. Better not itemize! Or even better, a hyper-realistic STD simulator where contracting Gonorrhea will cause the forcefeedback in the controller to punch you in the balls! Mazel tov!!

WOW. hot coffee will look like a cherry bomb next to the media eruption that's sure to happen over the abortion game. I'm all for it.

I always loved using the item (I think it was Frita the hooker?) in South Park Rally where you give the other player herpes, and red splotches appear on his screen obscuring his vision. The great thing is they're cumulative, so the more you use the more dots the other guy gets making it really hard to see.

The Revo controller could be used as a belt too when the wife needs discipline

I'd only play the abortion game if, during the abortion, the woman comments on how it tickles. Just like real life...

This man has some innovative ideas. And in the end, thats what the Revolution is about, innovation.
