Rumors that should be answered tomorrow, but supposedly Iwata (IWATATON????) will give us the final name of the Rev and a release date, which could be pushed as early as June.

I'm just gonna go ahead and believe a June release.
One of the main arguments against it is that final Dev kits arnt out yet...and I dont think that matters especially when it comes to Nintendo developed titles. Nintendo 1st party studios probably have a bit more info than anyone else, so why couldnt they get a game cranked out before others?
As for 3rd parties, they've had at least the controllers for a while now, and frankly, THE GRAPHICS DONT MATTER. yep, they could do a Gamecube quality game, with new ideas/features and be ready for an early launch. Sure, there might be some shovel ware, but I can see things flowing pretty smoothly.

No way - Final dev kits won't be released till this summer. Unless, of course, Big N has a huge line up of 1st person titles ready to keep any kind of drought from occurring.

I agree. I don't think it sends a good message to 3rd party developers to release the system before they have even had proper time with the final dev kits. I think it is safe to say that 3rd party support for the Rev is going to make or break this system.
Nintendo makes great 1st party games, but they can't withstand long periods of nothing between their releases.

I'm curious about the classic games service. WIthout knowing when this goes live, I'm not that pumped about the launch yet.
What games are there for Revolution that have been shown and announced? No Mario at launch would be a real stinker. Sunshine sucked and I need a next generation Mario fix, soon. I've been denied since the 64.
I would be excited about a possible June Blast Corps marathon though.

June or November doesn't matter to me. I probably won't be buying it until around Christmas anyway. I have so much catching up to do and with games like Burnout Revenge for the 360 that you could play FOREVER because of Live multiplayer I know I never will.
Therefore, when people think of Nintendo, they'll think of going to Mars and boobies and shit.
I already do, man. What that says about me, I don't dare consider.
Buuuuuut ... yeah, it can't be June. Between this and the PS3 worldwide "launch" in November, I think everybody is just pulling dates out of the air.
Kutargi: "We will have one million units ready for US, Europe, and Japan in November! Demand FAR outstrip supply! People will kill each other in streets for Sony product! We win again!"
Iwata: "Sure, we'll launch in June. Hope you dumb muthafuckers like playing some Kid Icarus, bacause that's all you're getting for six months anyway."
Moore: "Oh yeah? Well, we ALREADY launched the Xboy! Two months ago! It was crazy! You should have seen it, mate!"

I love the company to death, but Nintendo hasn't exactly been the leader in the cool system name department.
Famicom = Nintendo Entertainment System (yawn)
Super Famicom = Super Nintendo Entertainment System (super yawn)
Project Reality = Nintendo 64 (64 yawns)
Dolphin = Nintendo Gamecube (how in the.. dolphin to gamecube?)
Nintendo DS = Nintendo DS (millions wasted on market research)
Nintendo Revolution = Nintendo RS (speculation)
Let's hope they do better than that :P

The development came from the idea that people wanted something new. The only real way to demonstrate the appeal of these games is to let people try them -- found that consumers without interest in games were soon hooked. Encourages gamers to share the title with their non-gamer friends and even parents.

That ain't all:
This release just hit the wire:
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Nintendo President Satoru Iwata
today challenged a crowd of game developers to think differently and take a
fresh approach to the creation of video games. During his keynote address at
the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif., Iwata said Nintendo will
provide developers with the tools they need to disrupt the traditional methods
of game creation, much as the company already has.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050915/LATH122-b)
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050516/NINTENDOLOGO)
These tools include the controller for Nintendo's next home console
(code-named Revolution), which lets users control the action on their
television screens through the motion of the controller itself. The
controller lets game developers create new kinds of gaming experiences, ones
that enhance the experience for hard-core gamers while making video games more
accessible and less intimidating to novices. The new forms of innovative
software that can be created by any size developer will be made available for
download via Revolution's Virtual Console service.
"This new approach is like stepping onto an unexplored continent for the
first time, with all the potential for discovery that suggests," Iwata said.
"No one else can match the environment we're creating for expanding the game
experience to everyone. Our path is not linear, but dynamic."
Iwata also announced partnerships with Sega and Hudson to offer
downloadable access to their classic games via Revolution's Virtual Console.
Revolution owners will be able to relive their past gaming glories from the
Sega Genesis console by playing a "best of" selection from more than 1,000
Genesis titles, as well as games sold for the TurboGrafx console (a system
jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). These games join Revolution's access to
20 years of fan-favorite Nintendo games from the NES(R), Super NES(R) and
Nintendo(R) 64 eras.
Iwata also revealed for the first time that a new game called The Legend
of Zelda(R): Phantom Hourglass would be released for Nintendo DS later this
year.
Iwata, a game developer himself, revealed behind-the-scenes stories about
the development of three key initiatives.
For the industry leading Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, internal engineers and
developers overcame a series of hurdles to make the system seamless and
flexible enough to allow players to choose to play wirelessly either with
friends or against unknown opponents. The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection reached
1 million unique users in just 18 weeks -- nearly five times the adoption rate
of the leading online game console network.
He described a pivotal meeting in coming to agreement on development of
the incredibly popular "brain games" in Japan. A leading Japanese scientist
attached a sci-fi-looking wired helmet to a Nintendo staffer and then visually
demonstrated stimulation of brain activity as the staffer played prototype
software.
Finally, he described the hundreds of sketches, dozens of prototypes and
company-wide collaboration that led to the final form of the unique Revolution
controller system, which resembles a traditional TV remote control. He called
the related research and manufacturing costs of the new control system,
"...our method to disrupt the market...realizing a new way to connect a player
to his game."
Sega Genesis too?! DAMN!

Wasn't really your fault. It was worded vaguely. On closer inspection, it looks like they're talking about the software that is developed, not the development software itself. Still, they do say "by any size developer," so chances are a development kit will be easier to get than in the past.
I don't know if the console world is ready for manufacturer-endorsed homebrew games. Still, might be cool.

Not even "those that we didn't even make", but more along the lines of "the ones we directly competed against" I never had a Genesis (played it at my cousins once in a while) because my parents sure as hell weren't going to buy me two systems.

Oooh, that's not a bad idea. OR vice versa, like 10 free games with the purchase of a shell for a given system. I do hope they make Nintend-quality shells mimmicking the systems' controllers. Nope, they haven't said that yet. Personally I'm hoping for a combination of the two. There are plenty of NES or SNES games I know I would want to buy for the right price, but since I never played Genny or TG-16, it would great to be able to "rent" them somehow, either unlimited access to a set number for a month, or one game for 50 cents a day or something. Sadly no. Just about everything revealed was unexpected; all the stuff everyone was hoping to see will remain hidden for now.

Wow, just wow. I am sold. I will have this badass system on launch day! I am just so speechless....this is just amazing... I wonder if we'll be able to download games that were not released in the U.S.(not translated of course)? Nintendo just needs to get a line up of Sega Saturn games for download now!!!

that would be sweet. I imagine the service will be more of a buy-to-own rather than subscription based

And hey, they have 30 second clips of everything on iTunes .... maybe everything will have a demo period (5 minutes, 1st level, etc.)

I don't think you can read any more into it than it will be online and it will sell stuff.
That, and Nintendo would love it if just for one second someone confused them with Apple. ;)

Well, I was referring to the question of whether it would be subscriber-based or a buy-it-and-own-it-forever system. iTunes is not subscriber based, unlike other music stores.

I think we can all rest easy knowing that Nintendo really is on the right path. I wasn't expecting a lot from GDC, but got a couple awesome surprises -- Zelda PH looks so cool, and the access to Genesis and TG-16 games? SWEET!
The only thing that hurts is knowing there is no chance in hell I'll have enough time to play as much as I want to, between the 'Cube backlog I've got, the DS, new Rev titles, downloaded games, and the GBA which still ain't dead yet.

Nothing really good announced to me. The only Genesis games I'd care to get are already released in the Sonic collections and I don't care about TG-16 games. I've already posted about Zelda its thread. I look forward to E3, though.

I am still in a little bit of shock at what Nintendo has come out with. I think they are really going to do well this generation and they probably just solidified their lead in the handheld market for years to come. I can't wait to pick up a DS Lite and about 10 games that I've had my eye on... Metroid, Zelda, Mario Bros., etc.

99 cents per game? I'll need to save up like $250.

Probably more like $0.99 per level and $9.99 for the whole game. Plus the biggest games won't be available due to licensing issues. ;)

I know you're just being facetious, but I hope they do come out with a reasonable price ;)

Neither can I. I thought the WindWaker style was done for but now that I see it's making it to the DS I'm elated. Really wish there had been an announcement about DS Lite availability to go with it but I'm guessing now it'll be announced at E3 and available very shortly after.

If we weren't all so painfully aware of Nintendo's trouble keeping up with DS Lite demand in Japan alone, I'd say they might try to pull an Apple: announcing the product and then releasing it for sale the next day. I don't think they could get enough DS Lites manufactured in time to make that work, certainly not without telegraphing what they were up to way in advance.

I hate that about Apple. It re-enforces the image that their customers have lots of money to burn at any given moment.

That's because they do. No one needs a new iPod yet they sell like crazy everytime a new one is released. If the rumors about the "true" iPod video are, um... true, then I'll probably be buying one soon after it is released... because I'm a sucker.

Yeah, those of you who complain about Nintendo releasing improved hardware like the GBA SP and the DS Lite every couple years should try walking in an Apple junkie's shoes. Imagine you lay out $400 for a 60 gig video iPod (as I did) and it's pushing obsolescence in less than six months.
Nevertheless, Apple makes a great product and I love my little geek totem. Even if a new iPod is announced next week, it won't undercut the functionality of the one I already have. It might make me envious, but that's my problem, not Apple's.

It adds nothing of value to me. Nothing in this address made me excited for the Revolution. I hope E3 changes that.

How about the fact that, before this year, Apple always waited until after the Christmas holiday to release new iPods. So every year anyone who got an iPod has theirs outdated within the month.

I have a Turbo and...the games ain't that good. The only games I'd want to buy are the two Turbo CD games that I loved but never could own (didn't have a Turbo CD): Cosmic Fantasy 2 (never gonna happen, especially since Working Designs went under) and Dracula X (I'd give that a high possibility at least).
Here's hoping they announce Sega CD or 32X games next. I'd actually pay for Kolibri, arguably the finest humming-bird based shooter on the 32X, and probably Sonic CD. Maybe Vay, though, again, a WD game.

You're right. I own a Turbo as well and the only games I own are the first two Bonk games and Air Zonk. Honestly I just think its exciting that Nintendo is willing to go this far with its "Virtual Console". Sure it wasn't the announcements everyone was hoping for but that is exactly what E3 was originally designed for -selling. Although I do think Iwata could have dropped a US DS Lite release date/price into his keynote...

Does anyone think Goldeneye 64 has a chance of somehow making it to the Virtual Console?
And I don't think Iwata answered the question whether we can play online multiplayer with the retro games. And will the new Revolution controller work at all with these old school games. I want E3 now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
