Hurrah! This is great news for anyone who loves importing games!

Region-Free, fully backwards compatible, 60 gig HD, Xbox-Live-like online services? I like the way PS3 is shaping up, but I suppose the price tag and waiting til' November will be the only way we know just how good or bad it will be.

Wow, about freaking time someone steps up. I know some X360 games are region free as well, hopefully we'll see a trend

PS3 and PSP region free.......God bless Sony. This is much easier than searching for a modded console.

Does this mean the ps3 can play both ps1 and ps2 imports too?

Sweet, now hopefully this will mean more import friendly titles.

Since Blu-ray is so massive, this might mean that developers will make one version of their games and sell to all regions. So we may all have the option of changing the language. This could mean that I will be able to play games with their original japanese voice-overs!

Once again Sony has impressed me with PS3 features (the other being the required HDD).

Is there any other outlet reporting this? It's close to April Fool's and I'm a bit paranoid.

This is great news but I don't want to get worked up over the Sony Hype Machine. Remember they made a lot of promises for the PS2 and never really delivered. It could turn out to be region free for PS3 games and leave PS1 and 2 out.

Hell, I'm not big into PS2 gaming in the US, most of my PS2 games are import (SNK and Shumps). I even have a JPN PS2 (I hate modding systems), if the PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 titles I'll definitly pick one up after my JPN PS2 dies.

PS1 and 2 games already have region encoding on them. This means we probably still won't be able to play imports of those.

It is not an April Fool's joke, it was announced at this year's GDC.

It's a shame that Microsoft allowed developers to decide if their software was region free or not. I *desperately* want to play Wrestle Kingdom for the 360, but Yuke's decided to make it for Japan only, meaning that they will only sell 500 copies of the fucking thing. How dumb can you be to limit your software to a market that hates the shit out of the console it's on?

Awesometastic for Sony. I buy ~20 imports a year, and I'm glad that I won't have to explain to people why I have two of the same console plugged into my TV. whew!

I'm still a little weary of some of the stuff I've read about making PS3 games only playable on the original PS3, making used and rented games useless.
I saw this in one of the game magazines, and also an interview with David Jaffe where he was trumping this technology up pretty big.

I wonder if it will support PS1/PS2 games too (the region free-ness)....
If so I can sell off my import PS2 and pick up a PS3 at launch here in Japan.

Also, I wish the 360 was region-free too b/c I saw a used one at a game store here for about $200.....

I may have to hold my breath considering Sony's stupidity in trying to cockblock me in playing import PS2 titles. If this turns out to be true however I can't wait to import all the Japanese AND Korean titles that will never make it over here and if this plays PS2 and PS one imports it's a guaranteed buy for me. I just can't see how developers wouldn't throw a fit about it from the way I see it though.

A rumored confirmed fact that could be rumored? Surely, brains will explode upon reading this post.

I will only jump for joy if they can make the PS1/PS2 titles region-free as well on the PS3. It's still good news though.

Same here!

Although I doubt it will happen it would be fantastic!

Overall this is great news, and bad news. Good for the obvious reasons and bad becuase now there will be so many more games to buy and I am already low on money as it is.

I don't see why they couldn't make PS2 and PS1 games from any region work on a PS3. They could just leave the region detection out of the PS3 all together or set it to an equivalent of Region 0 so it can read all regions.

I'm pretty surprised to see that Sony is the one doing this rather than someone like Nintendo. Both MS and Sony seem pretty big on locking stuff up, so to see one of them go Region free is pretty awesome. Although if this is true, what is to stop Europeans and Americans from all buying cheaper Hong Kong versions of games, unless they are going to standardize prices worldwide (doubtful). Still, very cool for importers. As someone who can neither speak nor read Japanese though, it probably won't come in handy for me much.

This is a good move for Sony since a lot of people didn't even bother trying to get into the import scene because of the hassle of finding an import console or tyring to mod themselves. This might even help Sony decide to translate some more niche titles. It seems like it will bolster the PS3's new rep as a hard core gamer's best friend. With a big price tag, it's not like many people could afford to buy an import console anyway.

god bless your way of thinking. cheezy voice overs have ruined too many games for me.
