View Full Version : Games of the past, that you would remake if you could.

I just thought this would be an interesting topic because so often, I play a game for 2 weeks, and go... "why didnt they do that? That would of been so much better!" or "Man, this game really had potential..." I'm currently playing Kingdom Hearts and I'm collecting dalmations, and I was thinking to myself... this would be so much better if they barked when you can within a 10-20 foot radius... then it would drive you nuts until you found them... but instead... they're in a chest... just like everything else. I was unimpressed when I found my first trio of pups.
Often, I think about when the PS1 first came out and 3d was new and everyone tryed all these unique 3d ideas before one way was the standard... for example...
Making a Fighting game? Get the SoulCalibur enigine!
Making a Platformer? Get the Mario 64 engine!
What about an action game... hmmmm.... Syphon Filter engine?
You get the point... though things change, the standard stay the same...
But I've always thought that the Toshinden engine could be reworked.. or what about blast runner or silent bomber?
I thought that the Gamecube Resident Evil Remake was brilliant, but everyone bitched about the controls... so when they changed it for 4... I played it and was like... this is pretty good... but its kinda lost its Resident Evil feel to it... Now its Splinter Cell, with zombies.
No one really took gaming seriously in the past, and the voice acting was horrible, as was the FMV. Seriously, watch the Warhawk FMV again...lol
Anyways, I would like to hear your ideas for remakes or use of old engines for new games.
Like I've always thought that the Bushido Blade engine would be a good fit for a Ninja Scroll or Blade of the Immortal game.
And if I could remake any game for the Next Gen systems it would be Silent Bomber.
I thought the game concept was awesome, laying different types of bombs for different effects... the gravity bomb that impoded was pretty cool. But you couldnt throw bombs on the robots? Or how come theres no people in the game? And the voice acting was atrocious.
But the concept art was awesome, and the characters and premise was pretty cool. The game was a little shallow so I would add some hand to hand fighting, but no guns. And maybe have like 6 diffenent bombs and have the different bombs be needed for different bosses...
Like use an firebomb to blow off the door and throw a gravity bomb in the engine... add some physics to all of that and distrctible enviroments and you've got a pretty awesome game. You could also have a pretty awesome co-op and nice multiplayer if done right.
I'll add more ideas, and organize them better in an edit later... when I brain storm.. but lets see how many awesome ideas we come up with... hell, you could add to this and I would draw up some designs and we could write a story and submit it... lol.
Anyways, just post whatever you want. =)

I couldn't think of anything more awful. The cel-shaded engine is godawful.
I think it might be cool to make a 3D Final Fantasy 2, or Illusion of Gaia, but both of those would have to be carefully done. Illusion of Gaia in 3D would be awesome.
Definitely Bionic Commando. The idea was unique, the character was unique, and to this day the game stands up for me. Bring it back dammit! The setting was somewhat futuristic without being over the top which was cool. You still had your regular old army guys. For the love of god let him be able to jump! I'd love to see a 3D version of this maybe using the POP engine or a Spider-Man type engine with some crazy platforming using the claw. The engine would also have to accommodate 3rd person gunplay. Maybe throw some new unique weapons into the mix.

That would be incredible, at least for Mario. I'm not sure if the style would ruin the feel of OoT/MM, although I suppose you could do the cell-shading in a darker style that would still be impressive. I loved the living-cartoon style of WW. Cell-Shading can be done very, very poorly. But when done well, it's just amazing. :)

I'm totally for this... a jump, or at least a dive/roll would be nice just for getting on crates and what-not
Maybe go for a Perfect Dark/Halo type of future? Not too far, but far enough for flying military cruisers and stuff. You could do alot of swinging from one ledge to another while running on walls... and maybe grab weapons and items with the grapple? Or you could sneak up and grapple people and drag them away?

Twisted Metal 2. The gold standard for auto combat, IMO. Its sequels and imitators have tried to overtake its gretaness, all have failed.

"Sure, I thought Lolo was a decent puzzler on the nes.... lets make it in 3D!!"
Thats not what I asked, I asked if you were to make the game... what you do. Just making stuff in 3D does nothing for this topic.
-What engine would you emulate? Is it a mixture of 2?
-Would you take out something?
-Would you add something?
-Who would be your voice actors?
-Would you add in current characters from later sequels as cameos?
You know, that kinda stuff...

welll... since you were speaking of kingdom hearts, I would change the voice casting. I mean come on, lance bass, haley joel osmet, and mandy moore? I think the game woulda been better if the voices cast were of no names, than ou wouldnt bring outside info in while you were playing. I kept thinking of the sixth sense, bye bye bye, and candy whenever I heard any of these three peoples voices. Its what made me quit the game half way through... perhaps Ill start again now that kh2 is out.

Regarding my first post. I would update the engine to something 3D (similar to the Rachet and Clank engine). Update the sound and that's about it. Keep the original just like it was except for a fresh coat of paint.

mkay... i'll try and do that this time...
let's go with the Killer Instinct franchise...
In terms of graphics I would actually make all character models real 3d instead of 3d generated sprites. If not that I would probably copy Rumble Fish in terms of animation.
Play would still be primarily on a 2d feild except no corner edges... ie infinte plane to fight on much like the old tekken games. No 2d fighter has really done this, so it would be nice to see Killer Instinct do it for a first.
The combat system would still be very much like the originals except I would add counters or parrys to add some depth. In terms of combos I think it would be nice to split different combos into differnet styles that you can choose before the match. Some choices could be to play with the old Killer Instinct combo styles, super combos (toned down since it might be too easy for most people), or something along the lines of V-Ism for people who want to be creative with their combos.
The sound I would hope stays very much like the older games since it was and is very cool to listen to the characters making crazy vocal noises when hitting or getting hit.
Also, there would have to be a few new characters and imrpovements on the old. In terms of story, I would make Fulgore the very central character that ties eveyone elses story together. Fulgore is loose and set out for ultimate power, Combo's arms are going bad and he needs special components from Fulgore's body in order to improve them, Cinder is jsut out for revenge on Fulgore for no reason, and maybe other characters look for mysterys behind the people who created fulgore... yada yada whatever...
did I do it right this time?

Thats awesome...
You know, originally... Killer instinct was going to be the first game to allow you to beat up someone, busting them through wall after wall, through room after room until you ran out of building and you fell off. Thats where the falling on a car animation came from... unfortunatly the ULTRA 64!!! processor still couldnt do that.
Also, Fulgore's voice is a pig squealing... **random trivia!!**
So, your remake would kinda make good on the original idea... my favorite fighter was the boxer...

I would be more true to the first than the 2nd though... IMO orchid looked like crap in the 2nd and everyone lost the fun 3D anime-ish look and looked like strung out sweaty people in the 2nd. Also, the fonts used in the 2nd looked like that crappy Mac font "sand". Ugh. As an ex-designer...sand fonts are my most hated fonts.

OK, to expand on my earlier post, I would remake Mario 64 using the Wind Waker cel-shaded engine. I think this series would play excellent as a "living cartoon." I'd expand each of the levels so they were 3 to 4 times as big (go back and play it - those worlds are small by today's standards) and add another 120 stars to collect with all new objectives.
I'd also get rid of the "cap" powerups and have something different instead to represent the different powers (like the racoon tail for flying, maybe a pair of shiny metal boots for the metal powerup, etc.). I'd add in tons of breakable bricks and more question mark blocks to every level in addition to differentiating between regular mario and mushroom mario (2-3 hits and you're dead depending on your current power-up level - none of this sissy coins = life crap where you can get hit a ton of times before dying). I'd make sure to include a playable Yoshi with his own objectives.
Also, for every level I'd add in a TON more enemies - goombas and koopas of all types, bullet bills, buzzy beetles, hammer brothers, bob-ombs, shy guys, ninjis, monty moles, spinys, thwomps, boos, etc. Make it crazy.
I'd link the worlds together with more than just the castle hub - like you could take a warp pipe in each level to another level with objectives spanning multiple levels (like find a key in one world and open a door in another).
I'd bring back the classic mario theme but I'd enlist an orchestra to perform everything for the soundtrack. There are a ton of things you could do to make this almost a completely new game but still be a remake of sorts. I loved the Wind Waker graphics and I like cel-shading when it's well done and I think it would be perfect for the Mushroom Kingdom.

I'd take Kid Icarus and remake it into something resembling Banjo-Kazooie.
You'd be able to fly for limited distances, and you could have the option to go into an FPS mode when shooting an arrow (much like Kazooie's egg). Hell, just replace Banjo for Pit, Grunty for the Eggplant Wizard, the areas for something more..."heavenly", and update the graphics and I'd be golden.

I think games of the NES era and PS1 era are the ones that need remakes.
Let's face it, SNES games still look pretty darn good, and current generation games did 3d as it should have been.
But the 8-bit and 32/64 bit games are a bit of an eyesore at this point.
Seeing games like Xenogears,Crash Bandicoot or Little Nemo and Zelda I and II come to life like REmake did would be awesome.

I'd remake River City Ransom for the nes.
I know most companies have failed miserably when it comes to 3D brawlers, but I refuse to believe it cant be done well. I heard the Warriors was good, so maybe we steal their ideas for a 3D brawler, only with super deformed Technos characters.
A high school themed brawler where you run around and beat people up and take their money, then spend it on heavy RPG elements like ability upgrading, and new attacks and techniques. The original game was soo innovative and ahead of its time that you dont really need to add much, just update the look and gameplay to 3D.
And I wholeheartedly agree with some of the other games people have mentioned, like Bionic Commando, and Kid Icarus.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 2d update of Blaster Master.. hey if this is a fantasy here... lets get a symphonic score too! And get this, how about a SAVE feature so I don't have to yell at my mom when she turned off my NES because it had been on for 39 hours straight.
How bout a new tileset for Ultima V.. haven't seen any RPG with depth like that one. Remake any of the RPG's of today:only addendum... a cloth map. What happened to those. I dunno if that's relevant to the topic here, as far as upgrades, but dammit, we need more cloth maps in our game boxes.

ROCKET JOCKEY, for gods sake... a little-known PC game that sprung to mind as soon as I read this topic. A totally unique game that NO ONE has even bothered to rip off yet. Here's how it goes... you fly on these rocket-powered things that resemble the speeder bikes from Return of the Jedi. You can't "turn" in the normal sense, only lean left and right to slightly alter your motion. However that's where your cable launchers come in. There are poles scattered around the arena, and if you shoot a cable at pole you will latch onto it and swing around, until you release the cable and resume your forward motion.
The object of the game is to knock all the other riders off their rocket and string them to a pole. With one cable attached to a rider, you have to drag the guy towards a pole, shoot your second cable at the pole, then hit the release button to attach the two cables and leave the guy just hanging there.
And there were many fun ways to knock people off the rockets, oh man. You could just shoot a cable at the guy and time it right; that would yank him right off. Or you could shoot your cables at two different poles and join them to form a booby trap of sorts; any rocket guys who run into that would be clotheslined right off. When you're knocked off a rocket you could run around on foot and try to get back on your rocket (or someone else's if it's not occupied). So you're not really out of the game until you get strung up onto a pole
ANYWAY, what would I do with a remake? Well first of all there would be the requisite graphical engine update. This was on mid-90's PC, and while the graphics were 3D they were still quite primitive. The arenas all had completely flat surfaces, so I would change that.
Secondly I would definitely put it on consoles since it really is more of a console-type game. Splitscreen and online multiplayer would totally be in. I would keep a similar soundtrack, as the original one was awesome (all this surf guitar stuff by Dick Dale and simlar bands), but custom soundtracks would be a definite option as well.
Some new ground combat would be added, as you were pretty helpless when you got knocked off your rocket in the original. You SHOULD be at a disadvantage on the ground, but at the same time you should get a little more of a fighting chance. Hand-to-hand wouldn't really make sense against flying rockets, so perhaps the ability to lay mines of some sort would be good. Or maybe some way to jump and hijack a rocket, but it would require ridiculous timing so as not to be abused.
Finally I would just add OPTIONS, OPTIONS, OPTIONS to the multiplayer. In the original you couldn't even change the time limit, which was unfortunate since many battles had the opportunity to be really epic affairs but had to be cut short.
Damn I get excited just thinking about this. I can't even get the original to run on my newer PC. :-( Man, someone please remake this!!!! Or at least rip it off, because I'll gladly take that too!

Damn I get excited just thinking about this. I can't even get the original to run on my newer PC. :-( Man, someone please remake this!!!! Or at least rip it off, because I'll gladly take that too!
Lol, Rocket Jockey was my 2nd choice. I played the hell out of the game with my first PC and the triggers and XBL support on the Xbox 360 would be perfect.
And install the game and right-click on the icon and select "Play in Windows 98 mode"
I personally love shooting both grapples and making a clothesline... also, the soccer was pretty fun.
Maybe in the remake I would add the ability to jack rockets, maybe some extra weapons? (Not guns, to unoriginal, but concussion grenades that would make your opponents screen blurry? Maybe Flashbangs? Smoke bombs?), and foot I would make the running a bit faster...

Panzer Dragoon Saga.
Excellent game that was seen by nearly nobody since it was released in very small quantities after the Saturn was given up for dead by Sega.
Ported to the PSP it could be a very inexpensive project for such an epic since so much of the existing assets could be reused with little work. Brought to the PS2, Xbox, or GameCube it could receive serious graphic upgrades but need little change to the gameplay. I was surprised Sega never saw fit to give this one a second chance.
Taking it to the PS3 or Xbox 360 would introduce so many new possibilities that it would have to almost be treated as an entirely new project with a lot of pre-existing material, like adapting a comic book ot animated series to a game.
What I'd really like is both a port of the original to PSP or current consoles, then a new game in the same style for next gen systems.

Resident Evil 2
Gladiator ( http://coinop.org/g.aspx/101692/Gladiator.html ) could be pretty cool if remade. Slick graphics and a 3d interface that works could make for a fun game. Actually a 3D version would maybe be a nice use for the Revo controller.
Or a Punch Out remake using the Revo controller. Hmmmmm.

I'd remake River City Ransom for the nes.
And I wholeheartedly agree with some of the other games people have mentioned, like Bionic Commando, and Kid Icarus.
Because of the hype with these, i am honestly shocked it hasnt happened.

I'd love to see a Ms. Pac-man remake. Same graphics just 100+ levels that are nothing more than one screen (no scrolling like in Jr. Pac-man), 4 power pellets, 4 ghosts and the bouncy fruit. That's it. No fancy powerups, no 3D graphics - keep it simple.

The Legend of Dragoon. Man, this game is so awesome. I would love to play it with next gen graphics.
It would also be nice to see the streets of rage series get a graphical revamp.
Just as a note, there will be a remake of the old ROCKET JOCKEY

hell what game couldnt do with some kind of remake especially the great ones.
Darkwing Duck. I loved this cartoon growing up and it sucks it never got a decent game( the nes title sucked bigtime) so id do it all over with next gen graphics and create the whole of st canard and give you free roam over it all. itd be cool to have to balance out being darkwing as well as drake mallard.
Resident evil 2 and 3 ( id use the re 4 game engine and rebuild those 2 games from the ground up and make them more action related games especially re 2. id love to make a sort of side bonus story where you get to be in racoon city as it falls and do it from the point of view of one of the cops. id make the zombies faster and make it necessary to do head shots to finish them and add in limb specific damage so you could take off an arm and thyed keep coming ect.
ET( id love to play that game exactluy the same only with next gen graphics. imagine falling into that pit over and over again but with sweet realistic graphics damn thatd be sweet (jk).
shadowman dc( that game was perfect as is but id love to see it with ps3 level graphics same thing for the legacy of Kain and soul reaver series which btw wtf happened with that series did it end or not because i played defiance and it seemed like there was more left to go.
street fighter 2010( i dunno how you could amke it a 3d game but id love to see it done).
Land of the Dead. I think they dropped the ball with that game completly as they do with alot fo zombie games. id remake it and do it from the point of view of either someone trying to get to the city from an infected area or from the point of view of people in the city. you can switch from being one of those peopel who go out for supplies, to one of the citizens in poor town and from the military guys protecting the city and to also be someone in the green. id also like to make a kind of action mmorpg with this story. and like always they need to make games where head shots kill not body shots.and tons of zombies all over.
castelvannia: i love most of the games but they need to change things up . id set it in a complete world and make it where you can hire out to do jobs like hunting werewolves, or fighting monsters and such. it sucks to just go into one castle and fight and thats it itd be cool to do more kind of in a vampre hunter d kind of way.
every freakin transformers game. i want to play a good transformers game period i heard the last one was ok but we need something great for those of us who grew up on the show. i want to play a 3d fighting game based off of the original transformers.

I would love remakes of:
Master of Magic
X-com (the original)
Wing Commander
Mechwarrior 2
The Gold Box PC Dungeons and Dragons games (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds and Secret of the Silver Blades)
Dungeon Keeper
Syndicate
I'm sure I'll think of others but these come to mind at this moment for me.

Only game I'd really like a remake of is Ocarina of Time in either Cel shaded or just an update like TP... then maybe I could actually survive through the game without being turned away from the graphics.

After spending hours in Okami, I would like to go back to Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker and strip out all the fetch quests, bottles, horses, boats, fishing, ridiculous 3D jumping/floating/swinging issues and all the crap that is just not fun to play but everyone puts up with only because it's Zelda.
Burning Rangers. Why Sega never revisited this idea is beyond me. Take something like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction's engine, with its cityscape and buildings, and let there be firefighting on the outside and inside of buildings. Decide to leave the characters the way they are and heighten the cheese factor, or go the whole 9 yards with the anime and voice acting.
And two words: Lego Batman

RIVER CITY RANSOM! lol ya that would be an awesome remake. But...actually I wonder if that'd be any good. I mean watching the expressions and the funny movements while you played with a friend and threw a stick at him across the screen was half the fun. If you did that with todays graphics it would just become like a GTA >_>

A fully updated Doom / Doom 2 game that doesn't go down the path of doom 3.
- Full 3d graphics with multiple planes, water depth/acid/lava.
- More to the roots of doom and not a re-telling of the story. Make areas of the game familiar to the oldschool doom players, but keep it fresh. Each episode would have about 2-4 more levels attached to them.
- Nightmare mode split into two modes: Nightmare Mode - Enemies respawn within 2-8 minutes depending on how powerful the enemy is (Weaker the quicker). Hell Mode - Same as Nightmare mode is in Doom Now: Enemies respawn within a 30 second timeframe.
- Full Aiming
- Headshots do more damage / Close shotgun blasts would almost always be
fatal
- 2 more weapon types and 2 grenade types - A Sniper rifle and a m16- type rifle that is a bit weaker than the machine gun (but still rapid fire, the new machine gun would be a faster weapon than doom currently offers) and a frag grenade plus a sticky grenade.
- Alternate firing modes for the weapons for double barrel shotgun and higher ( one barrel at a time firing mode, etc)
- 3x the enemy types, more humanoid zombie types with diffrent weapons ( a sargent x2 in hitpoints with a double barrel shotgun, etc)
- Same style of puzzles and new ways to die (Side wall crushers, saws, etc)
- 32 player support akin to Q3A
- Xbox 360 and PC support
and the number one change..
- Keep the old doom guy and upgrade his face as it should be a indicator on how badly your hurt.

Top on my list would be 3D remakes of the Baldur's Gate games (with expansion packs). I would want more sidequests, more characters, and more areas, and an update to D&D 3.5 rules. I would also give the characters from BG1 more personality like the characters in Baldur's Gate 2. I don't remember very many random conversations in BG1, which was something I loved about BG2.
I would remake RE0-3& CV RE 4 style (though I guess they are kind of doing that with the Wii Resident Evil game). I would also make them a little bit longer.
I would like to see Morrowind upgraded with the Oblivion graphic engine and other upgrades seen in Oblivion (I don't like loosing stamina when I run, and I don't like random dice roll combat in first person games). Hopefully someone is making a mod like this for the PC version of Oblivion.
I would also like to see a Chrono Trigger remake for the DS, and I really want to see Perfect Dark on XBLA (it doesn't even have to be a major upgrade. A higher resolution, a rocksolid framerate, and online play would be the only upgrades I need).

welll... since you were speaking of kingdom hearts, I would change the voice casting. I actually like Haley Joel's voice acting.
I say Earthbound Zero in english. Of course, that would be too obvious.
