i was using zonealarm (the free edition) when i got a pop-up window saying there was an update available. so i downloaded the update and was in the middle of it when my comp locked up. i rebooted it and when windows was starting a got an "error starting program- a required .dll file was missing SSLEAY32.DLL" during the update it must have uninstalled zonealarm because it's not showing up anymore. so i went to try to install it again and it gives me "validation failed for c:\windows\system\vsmonapi.dll" and doesn't do anything else. also it's screwed up firefox and internet explorer. after i reboot i can get online, but after about 10 minutes web pages stop loading. any idea what i can do to fix this?

Few things to try.

1) System Restore: Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. Pick a date before the incident. This should work if you have it turned on, which it should be by default.

2) Download ssleay32.dll. Here: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?ssleay32

3) Download vsmonapi.dll:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?vsmonapi

4) Reinstall Firefox. Fuck IE. :)

See if that helps.

ok i think i got it working again. it turns out not everyting was uninstalled. i had to manually remove everything and reinstall zonealarm. i found those .dll's on that site too when i googled them.
