Then I get a pm from someone saying-

I seriously take offense to that term. You may be joking and kidding, but that is a very derogatory word. I kindly ask you edit and just use Asian.
Sensitivity goes a long way plus you do have a young audience in these forums. I would hate to see people drop the "n" word next and think it's funny. I hope you see my point.

Am I wrong or that out of touch with today's society that using the word oriental is racial slang?

That's our word, you can't use :-x.
But all joking aside, oriental is an outdated word, to me it's like saying someone is "colored". I don't particularly mind if someone uses it in a non-derogatory manner, but I would prefer they just use Asian.
Yeah, oriental is out and asian is in, which is dumb since they both denote the same region. Still, go with the flow, I guess. Me, I call people by name rather than any descriptor other than gender.

Nope, can't say Asian either...
Some people think the term "Oriental" is derogatory, largely because of its connection to imperial 19th century Europeans and Americans who are thought to have held a patronising attitude towards the region. Many of these people saw the East as backwards, while the West was seen as logical, rational and more modern. Furthermore, it is claimed that some courses in "Oriental studies" were riddled with inaccurate information that was used to justify colonization of these countries. Some Asian Americans see parallels between the word "oriental" and "$$$$er", though many see it as simply old-fashioned and functionless, as many African Americans see the word "Negro". The main criticism of the term is that it is overly vague, referring to a category of peoples with widely divergent cultural and ethnic backgrounds and no clear division between which groups belong to the term and which do not. In the USA, the location where most of the objections to usage of "oriental" occur when describing people, the term is often replaced with "Asian", which is also criticised as overly vague and confusing.

I can see what the problem is, but as a non-Asian, I wouldn't have read anything into it. I call people whose families are from Asia "Asian" because I knew a lot of Asians in school and that's what they referred to themselves generically as. Oriental is frankly a lot more accurate since it doesn't refer to the Middle East and whatnot (at least not that I've ever heard), which is a totally different culture but still part of Asia.
I guess next time just say Japanese or Chinese or whatever?

Oriental is offensive to some. Older asians usually do not find it offensive, but it's very risky to use with younger ones. I think there's a few reasons for this. One, it was a name placed on them, not one they chose. Two, it's a name that has often been used as an insult. And, three, as someone said, oriental is often understood to refer to things, not people.
Though when referring to chinese, japanese etc. the "modern" term is east asian.
Basically, this is one of those things that only some will find offensive. Some won't like the word, but won't say anything as long as they don't think you mean offense by it, other will just correct you politely. I think it's unlikely someone would immediately jump in your face because it's not something that they expect everyone to know.
My opinion is if there is a significant risk of someone finding the term offensive then don't use it. It's just a word, why risk insulting and/or making yourself look bad when you can just use asian, east asian etc? It's not that hard.
For some reason this thread now makes me think "Dong, where is my automobile?"

Oriental is outdated but doesn't have the offensive level of the n-word. And yeah, as mentioned, it's used for objects while asians are used for ppl. Although, ppl need to fcukin' lighten up. Communication is difficult enough as it is without all the offensive words. Speaking as a asian, I'd probably be more offended at being called a chink, $$$$, nip, or flip and be up in his face. If someone called me oriental, I'd just laugh it off and call him an ignorant 'tard.

I actually find caucasian a stupid term. Can't I just be called white? Does any white person ever get offended when you call them white-unless its white-ass-honky-cracka-mutha-fucka? I find terms like Asian-American or African-American totally asinine. Most "African"-American families have been in the country for 100-200 years. Why can't we just say black and cut the pretentous bull shit? The only way you should call yourself a 'something'-American is if you have a dual citizenship, otherwise you're just a plain American.
Tangent- Why do minorities cry about being narrowed out yet insist upon being labeled Mexican-American? Doesn't it only go to furth single them out as a minority trying to stand out of the collective?

Just be careful because some/many Chinese get insulted when you think they are Japanese, and vice versa. There are many little rivalries among people and cultures in Asia for a number or historical reasons. Asian is probably the safer term, but some of them don't like getting lumped into one group with others they don't think of as being the same as them.
As for the other comments about race/ethnicity in the U.S., I'm waiting for the day when we wake up and simply have one category--American. Then we only have to worry about what to call the foreigners...

technically, it is (for some reason) derogatory or racist to call somebody of asian heritage "oriental." I have no idea why, but instead you're supposed to use "Asian."
I guess it's similar to how it used to be correct to call African Americans "Negroes" while today that is considered a seriously racism word.
I don't make the rules, I'm just telling you what the score is.

Originally, the term "oriental" had no negative connotations. I assume that this began to change after a famous scholar Edward Said wrote a book entitled "Orientalism" in the '70s, in which he criticized scholarly attitudes toward Eastern and Middle-Eastern nations that characterized the Orient as mysterious/exotic, and often as darker and less civilized than Western cultures. As is often the case with political correctness, it would seem the term fell out of disuse with controversy, and now is considered offensive and outdated.

I wouldn't say we're too good for it. I mean we're called homo sapiens (http://anthro.palomar.edu/animal/table_humans.htm) after all but it's too much like a medical term and who uses medical terms in ordinary conversation other than someone in the medical field? Even then, that term only gives the genus & species classification. There's hardly any consideration of the other descriptors such as kingdom, phylum, order, & family.

No, it's that there's far more difference in physical form between breeds of animals and "races" of humans. I mean, humans are all 99% similar. There's exceptions to the rule, but we're all basically the same model with different coloration or facial features. That's not enough to differentiate into subcategories for any scientific reason.

Mmm, on average everyone's pretty close. The only major difference you bring up, height/build goes away on a large scale. For instance, "black people," depending on how broad you want to apply that term, aren't necessarily taller on the whole. You just live in a country that prized tall, muscular slaves, so naturally their ancestors will share those traits. Height difference between Asians and other races isn't really that great either, rather it's caused by nutritional differences (average S. Korean height: 5'8", average N. Korean [which has a history of famine] height: 5'4". The average caucasian height is 5'9", btw.) Given the same diets, human "races" are usually within 2 inches in height variation.

Well there are more genetic differences between dog breeds than there are between races of humans. Races don't exist biologically because there are more genetic differences within a race than there are between them. The only things that set apart human races are a few physical characteristics that vary widely within that race, so it's not very distinctive, get it?

 Ok, the only difference between dogs is a few inches/pounds and they're different color.
That's true, but that's like saying "well they're both around the same size when measured in miles." If you go by percentages, a mini-poodle is a heck of a lot smaller than a great dane, but a white guy and a black guy or whatever you want to compare are only off by 1 or 2 percent and can can easily intermix genetics. Thus, the differences in "races" among humans can't be used to classify people into breeds. So, whoever said it was right, biology doesn't recognise race, and for good reason.

There are areas of china where the people are very tall, areas of africa where people are shorter on average etc. Most characteristics are shared by all groups in at least a minority of members. Also, different breeds usually have more distinctions than simply physical characteristics. For example, intelligence differs significantly in dog species.
Also, race is a sociological construct, not a biological one, as has been mentioned. Adding a distinction such as breed would have no biological basis, and simply add further evidence to inherent differences in the mind of the average uninformed person.

There are orientals, asians, Philippines, japanese, chinese, indian and so on, I am not gonna even break into the spanish, mexican, brazilian and so on. I guess it all depends on the back ground you have and how you were brought up and whether or not you can take a joke.
there are all kinds of names for other people-- but few of them have years of slavery and oppression attached to them. It's weird because blacks used the word as a form of empowerment (like a lot of races and ethnicities do to "take a word back") but now you hear white people say it all the time (but not usually in front of black people.)
n ot trying to lecture though-- i do agree that the word can be funny at the right time. :)

i think people are overly sensitive to terms describing their race. Honestly people could call me "cracker", "casper", "whitey" or whatever they wanted and i honestly would not care... inn fact i'd probably laugh.

But white people are not as sensitive as some other ethnic groups. I don't understand how some groups say "That's a term that's reserved for us. You can't call us (insert racial epithet here), because we can only call each other that".

my psych and sociology professors said it's an empowerment thing for members of race or ethnicity to call each other by the derogatory terms. if a white person calls a black person a $$$$er, it's usually not meant in a good way and even if they're joking, there's a lot of history that kinda renders it unsafe for a joke...ya know? That would be on par with a bond hair/blue eyed German walking up to a jewish person and saying "seig heil." yet, some Jewish comedians do use the holocaust to set up jokes.

So, lemme get this striaght... you make a post with a semi-degrogatory comment explaining sexual actions you would take toward certain women... question the intergity of one female's sexual history...
... and this guy's worried that the word 'oriental' is going to fuck up the 'younger audience' on the forum?
Someone's got some weird priorities...

At least the derogatory terms for other groups haven't been made into a "cool" thing or game like "ninja" on CAG. To be honest, that offends the hell out of me. No other ethnic/racial/sexual group is subject to this here.
Putting an -a instead of -er at the end of that word doesn't change the fact that it is still the n-word. I can deal with it, but quite frankly I am sick of it being used in daily conversation. It's one thing for it to be used in satire like Chris Rock's "n-word vs. black people" or The Boondocks, but seeing some people here use it in a non-satirical sense makes me sick.

No offense but those professors are idiots. It's not empowerment. It's ignorant people being ignorant. Examining it in a real life setting would make them privy to that, not by reading books and listening to popular music. I went to McDonald's last year and anolder black female employee looked at me (didn't know me) and said, "You a big n-word ain't you?", because of my height. I shouldn't have to be subjected to that from my "people" let alone anyone else. That's the same as a gay guy seeing another gay guy and saying, "You a huge f-word ain't you."
Like Kayden said, I try to think of it in the same way Chris Rock does but that doesn't excuse the way the word has been glorified.

should've made it more clear-- they weren't making any definitive statements on the subject, rather than offering a p.o.v. on certain sub-groups of black people.
i agree that it's ignorant. but there are many dumb things that give the illusion of "empowerment" for ignorant people-- beer bongs for frat guys, promiscuity for dumb girls, genocide for authoritarian dictators.
Edit:
I feel like I'm digging myself into a hole by trying to explain this myself, so here's an article that explains it well in the 2 paragraphs starting with "The idea that the oppressed can empower themselves..."

I said that the first day cheapy implimented 'ninja'. People are going to start saying $$$$er because it looks cool and will be 'funny'.
And you don't have to black to be a $$$$er. $$$$er = slow/stupid/ignorant individual. Like $$$$ardly means cowardly. It doesn't mean coward because black people are, its the original meaning of the word. The same way gay used to mean happy, then homosexual and is now equivalent of 'stupid/retarted'.
SpazX

AFAIK, $$$$ardly is from a different root word, $$$$er is either a mispronunciation of niger (I heard that somewhere...) or just a slang of negro or other European words for black. While now it's used as a general slur, it was originally just black people.

Actually, $$$$ardly doesn't mean cowardly. It would be more applicable to the concept of this site. $$$$ardly means to be miserly in spending or only spending money where grudgingly applicable.

I agree with this: people shouldn't be busting out things like the n-word to people they don't know, no matter what color they are. Some people find it offensive, some don't. That's good enough reason to not use it. On the other hand, I do undertand the "mother" comparison. The use of degrogatory words can fairly be restricted to just the group that is the target of the slur, just like you're really the only one allowed to make fun of your own mother. I can call my mom a bitch, but if anyone else says it, he'll get knocked on his ass.
