View Full Version : Auction is up!! Thanks for all the assistance :)
I wanted to get some feedback from my fellow CAG members before I did anything further on this, but here's what it is basically.
I ordered a copy of that idiot Jack Thompson's book through half.com (so he wouldn't get any of my money). Through a series of devious emails, I managed to get him to sign the book. Now I did this for a reason. I want to raffle or auction the book off and send the procedes to charity, probably GetwellGamers (http://www.get-well-gamers.org/) if I can get the ok of the guy who runs it. I'm not sure if I want to do this through an ebay auction or open a paypal account for raffle donations, but however I do it, the winning person would either get the choice of keeping the book, or having it destroyed in a fashion of their choice, and having it videotaped, with a copy of it being sent to them, as well as any remains that may, well, remain, of the book.
Like I said, I'm just looking for feedback right now, so could I get some thoughts please? Any preferred method? Alternate charities? Other thoughts in general?
Auction is now up at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7609543430

Sounds like fun! Do it on Ebay cos you'll get more publicity that way. And make sure to contact various game related websites to get even more publicity for this.
Well I thought about doing ebay, but there are concerns with that:
1. they charge - and I don't want any of the money being taken away from the charity.
2. Thompson can, and will bitch and moan to ebay to get the auction pulled, which wouldn't be hard to do, then threaten to sue me for slander or something stupid. I toy with the pitiful bastard over at gamepolitics, but I don't need any interaction with him outside of that site, aside from getting him to sign the book.
Then again it would be better to have Thompson bitch at ebay than here.
Haha, nice idea. Good luck with this.

Sounds pretty cool. Fun idea.
If you need, i can shoot it apart, blow a couple dozen 9mm through it or something like that...
Now that i think about it, that sounds interesting. Never shot a book before.
THanks for the kind words, I just hope I can get a big enough response here on CAG to see if its worthwhile or not.

I'd take you up on that offer, but transportation getting here is up to you, as I'm in Connecticut, and the only person I knew in Oregon is back in Connecticut ;)

On what grounds? Someone selling a signed copy of his book and donating the proceeds? What kind of legal threats could he possibly make that would make eBay consider pulling the auction? We know he's completely apeshit batty, but I don't think you would have a problem there.

For the amount in fees versus publicity you could be able to obtain from ebay I think it's worth it.
I doubt he could stop you from doing it, I mean having his book destroyed does not constitute as slander does it? Just make sure you use caution in wording your description though.
Destroying a book doesn't even come close to slander. Slander is verbal defamation of character, and by destroying a book you would not, in any way, be ruining Jacks credibility or reputation (besides, he's already done that himself).

You may have heard his bitching about wikipedia , and they caved rather quickly.
If he told them that my actions were a defamation to his character or some BS like that, he may succeed, but I don't know much on lawyein' so I can't be certain.

That I mislead him on the actual signing of it for one. I told him it was going to my cousin for his son's first birthday (that was last Saturday, he cried through the whole party - the baby, not my cousin). While the cousin and birthday thing were truths, I decided to keep the book for myself.
How would he know that it was this particular copy that got signed? Surely he's signed more than one of these pieces of shit.

Well I know that Jack doesn't have many fans here in Connecticut - even Senator Lieberman stopped listening to him, but he knows I'm from here from our "discussions" over at gamepolitics - that and when I used an alternate email to get him to sign it I gave him my mailing address. My concern is he sees the auction, sees its from the same town, puts two and two together, doesn't get 16 for once, then tries to get under my hair with potential threats and what have you.

eBay it, but let the guys over at Penny Arcade know about it. You'd probably get a higher bid if it's publicized on their site.

Oh definately. Penny Arcade, GamePolitics, Joystiq, here, 1UP, Gamespot, a couple other web comics, I'd be sure to let them all know if/when I get this off the ground.
I'm pretty sure there's a way to setup an ebay auction that is donated 100% to charity...I don't know the details, but I would definitely go that route.

Its not that I'm worried, even if he does sue me whats he going to get exactly? I just graduated college, am working part time, and have huge college loans to pay. Its not like he can really take anything from me. I just want to save a migraine.

Do it on ebay. It would give your idea the most exposure.
If Thompson gets word of it, and complains to ebay, thats huge! Great publicity for the charity, and bad publicity for Jack. Another step closer to getting him completely disbarred and unable to waste taxpayer money with frivolous lawsuits. If he makes a big enough stink, the story could snowball and get national coverage.
Just heard back from get-well-gamers; they love the idea, so I think I'm gonna set it up, I'll hopefully have the ebay auction up on Sunday, when I'm off from work.

Awesome. Awesome that this is all going to charity, and awesome that we either get a vid/pics of someone doing something to a Jack Thompson book or the man himself gets involved, somehow stops a charity auction, and further taints his image.
Awesome.

not pics - video. I make that a promise to the winning bidder. And I PM'd CheapyD asking if he'd help get some publicity for it. I hope he says yes.
Now I just need to think up a new ebay account name; I'm thinking BookBreakers'R'Us, or something similar.

Problem? What problem? Edit yer posts to remove the bits about lying (to cover your tracks), and claim your cousin turned down the offer of the Birthday Book. So... you opted to destroy it for charity. :D

None as of yet outside of here and of course, Get-Well-Gamers. Once I talk to Ryan, the president of the foundation a little more, I plan on sending info to all of the following:

In order to get the most bang for your book - maybe set up the auction as a dutch auction(though im not exactly sure how that works)? Like auction off the pages individually in one auction a.k.a having it so the auction says 310 available . That way a lot of people can bid and stay within their budget, instead of having to rely on one person paying a large amount. And this way you might get more money donated to the charity. But then you might have to change your strategy of sending a video, and instead post it somewhere everyone can see it.

Wow good idea. Glad to see its coming together for you. I am interested in seeing how this turns out.
Also I think selling the book piece by piece may be better.
Where was it signed? Cover? Maybe you could do a page by page sale and the high bidder could get the signed cover framed? Then you can upload a video of it being ruined for all to see.
I dont think you would have a problem then at all.
This is the sort of thing that could snowball into something big.
Although I do think it's best to not further legitimize Thompson by continuing to give him attention.

I'm not going to read 3 pages of posts to see if this was addressed, but...
If he does go off on it, and it does turn into a big deal, there's a good chance you would end up getting quite a bit of publicity on it - then people want to know *why* you're doing such a thing. Now you have 1) Free publicity for your auction and 2) A free SECOND (much larger) forum to further your campaign.
If Ebay pulls the auction and nothing happens, what are you out other than having to do it elsewhere a few days off-schedule?

Another update- it seems the PR guys for Get-Well-Gamers have pretty much nixed the idea that they take an active role in it, therefore its up to me for the most part. I can still donate the procedes, and I'm hoping they can assist with the destruction, but for the most part I seem to be on my own.
As long as there are no setbacks - the auction will be going up tonight, and will be one week long.

Anything that can bring Thompson down (legally), I'm all for. All he is about, is to slander/destroy things that will gain him the most popularity regardless of how illogical his arguments are, and to stay in the spotlight for as long as possible. A true drama queen.
So it's kind of hard to say what can and can't be used against him, as it seems in his case there is no such thing as bad publicity.
ok, based on what our friend Lice is saying, I'm not in a bit of confusion here, I can either wait a day or two and let AOTS get first dibs on this possiblly, or I can continue as planned for a 7:30 auction start tonight, which more than likely has a good chance of reaching VGcats.com, Penny-Arcade, Joystiq, and Ctrl-Alt-Del by tomorrow.

Ok, talking to my 5th ebay chat person today, this one may have good news for me, keep your fingers crossed.
Ok guys, heres what the serivce rep told me: because GWG isn't officially registered as missionfish.org yet, I can't officially make this a charity auction in the ebay description. If I so much as mention the word charity in the description I run the risk of getting it pulled. I can still post it as a regular option, then donate the procedes afterwards to the foundation. Or I can wait a week longer for registration, but I'd potetnially lose the chance for AOTS. Personally, I think I shoud go for the regular auction tonight. and make sure to clarify with all the sites I publicize to that the intent is to send the money to GWG, make it absolutely crystal clear.
Here's where everyone here comes in - I have earned a pretty good reputation here on CAG, and I'm willing to put it on the line for this auction. If enough of you are still willing to go along with this I'll post the auction for 9pm tonight. Feedback now is imperative for this. The worst that can happen right now is the auction will get pulled in which case I'll just repost it after GWG is officially registered with missionfish.
Rather than drag this post on and confuse myself towards the end of it, let me just paraphrase - what do you think of this idea now?

The worst that can happen right now is the auction will get pulled in which case I'll just repost it after GWG is officially registered with missionfish.
Rather than drag this post on and confuse myself towards the end of it, let me just paraphrase - what do you think of this idea now?
Run the auction this week and explain exactly what you did above- that it's for a "good cause" but not listed as a charity auction because of Ebay's own rules. That way bidders definitely know it's for charity, AND you can still get publicity by having it this week.

Actually I can't mention anything at all regarding charity, even the word I was told by a service rep for Ebay - I can however make that aspect perfectly clear when submitting it to various sites. I was told by GWG to give it a shot tonight though - so you all agree?

I don't really care when or how you do it, just do it! And get the word out! Spread this through the various forums you guys all visit. I know once it gets posted, I'll link to the auction over at ocremix.org, and maybe some other sites.

Funny you should say that as I just posted the auction :bouncy:
Ok guys, Auction is up and running, 10 days long. I had to remove the charity listings due to Ebay being a dick, but its up nonetheless. Happy bidding!

If it was either of them, I'm betting it would be Gabe - but I'm rather curious, if *you* won the auction, how would you vie for the destruction?
I cant gauruntee I would destroy it, as I think there is a perverse humor in turning it into a feature in my collection of interesting books and other items.
In fact I would display the book proudly next to my copy of Peek from the Kinsey Institute. http://www.indiana.edu/~kinsey/publications/peek.html
HOWEVER, if it must be destroyed I think that shooting it might be the most entertaining option. Here in Indy Don from Don's Guns (http://www.donsguns.com/) might take interest in shooting a book.

:applause: :)
I can't believe I forgot the auction link at first :wall:
Well it has been a roller coaster ride trying to figure out If or when visc was going to get it online or not. I have been streaming information about this down the line and it has made it to two producers of Attack of the show. They think its intresting and we should know by tomorrow night if they want to mention it on the show. I have been passing info on as much as I can and Im limited by the people im passing it too so any delays are out of my control.
The link has been forwarded And i shall call tomorrow afternoon to see If this has been looked at and passed around.
What i find funny is how the book is about games and violence and here is some gamers auctioning off to cut his book in half with a chain saw...
Never the less Visc, I want to say that you have done a great job and through all of this its coming from your heart to help some sick kids in the hospital, which what this really is all about. Not to blow up a book or get on Tv, but to make some kids stay in the hospital a little brighter...
Good show so far chaps... lets carry on.
for my first 100 post thread, let me say thank you for the kind words Lice, you really hit a soft spot. I expect to get a bit of a backlash from Jack about this, and the auction may even get pulled, but if it does, its just gonna come back stronger with GWG being a fully registered ebay charity.
I have another thread coming in the next few weeks too - but it involved all of you to do some home work - if you don't know it already, find out your blood type and keep it on record. Thats all I'm gonna say for now, as I have to talk to some people about it first.

So, if I win, could I make you eat the whole book? My second choice is to have you brutally kill a man and soak it in his innocent blood.
So, if I win, could I make you eat the whole book?
Well I'm gonna have to edit the page now to omit that option.

Great work, Visc. Also, I'd like to commend you on the donation idea, very noble.

I really hate ebay; I made a ton of errors in the description, including having it there twice, and the assholes won't let me fix it. These people are some of the biggest pricks I've ever had to deal with.
Gotta cancel and repost the auction, new URL soon.

:wall: After I've submitted it to three sites and others have submitted it to other sites as well. How do they not let you edit it though?
I was going to pull the auction, but ebay beat me to it, after I cancelled all the bids.they took offense to the CD-R reference and called them bootlegs.

It just said the video of the destruction would be put on a CD-R or DVD-R and sent to the winner. Clearly illegal

Am I the only one who thinks this is just playing right into his hands? I mean, it seems like whenever someone does something like this, it just ends up giving him more ammunition for what he's promoting. You have to remember that it's not gamers you should be trying to convince, but non-gamers. At least, that's the avenue he's been working. So, the questions is, while this may seem cool, does it actually just harm gamers in the long run?

I think this doesn't do much either way- it's a clever way to earn money for a game-based charity. Would anyone think more highly or poorly of an anti-Iraq war group who earned money for a Veteran's Fund by destorying some Bush effigy? I think most people would just note the irony.
(And this isn't even that extreme... the Iraq war is in the news every day... your average person is only barely aware of Jack Thompson and his push against games... hell, my mom didn't even know who he was.)

This isnt about convincing anyone of anything. Its about raising money for charity. Gamers are the ones who are gonna bid this auction up, so they are the ones this idea needs to appeal to.

Listing removed? or just a bad link?
this was specifically in the email ebay sent me when they pulled my auction:
"The following information may help explain the reason for your listing(s) removal:
eBay prohibits unauthorized copies of media (such as software, video games, music, television programs, and photographs). Unauthorized copies include (but are not limited to) backup, pirated, duplicated, or bootlegged copies. It is both illegal and against eBay policy to sell unauthorized copies of copyrighted media."
I've since corrected my error and made a new auction which can be found here:

Lets try this again now.

The word charity if vague. Do you select, or does the winner? You might want to clarify that somewhere in the beginning.

The charity is the get-well-gamers foundation, the fact that the word charity is on there may result in the auction getting pulled now, if someone wants to "ask the seller a question" about that through ebay maybe I can clarify it on the page.

I also sent them a post that the auction was pulled from the bootleg crap, and that there's a new one back up again.
Shrike you just made my friggin day, that put a huge smile on my face. I posted a little info for them too just to be helpful.
You might have already been over this, but why didn't you go through eBay's official system for charitable listings? Are there too many hoops or something?
nvm found it - http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1820863&highlight=charity#post1820863
You maybe should pull this one and relist without mentioning charity at all.
Also be on the lookout for fake bids. No idea how to really tell what's fake, but I know listings that get any sort of pub attract a shit ton of that asshattery.

Yeah we went through it, GWG is still registering through there last I checked - its gonna take upwards of a week to finish. Being a 10 day auction though, it should still be up when that happens and can mention it safely.
Well it happened, he called around 8 am today twice, first to threaten to sue for defamation or fraud or something, then shortly after to see if we had his number "so out attorney could contact him". Looks like he dodged the publicity and just went to the threats.
