View Full Version : BattleField 2: Modern Combat Review -- TeamXbox and GameSpot
-- Review from TeamXbox.com (http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1154/Battlefield-2-Modern-Combat/p1/)
Overall: 7.3
Gameplay: 7.2
The game is entertaining, but coming out six months after the Xbox version only brought a few new aspects to the table.
Graphics: 8.7
EA and developer Digital Illusions took advantage of the Xbox 360’s advanced hardware to deliver visuals in the console’s 720p resolution standard.
Audio: 8.8
There’s nothing like Dolby 5.1 Surround sound to bring the war action to life.
Longevity: 8.8
The title has a lot of gameplay to explore, with a single-player Campaign, single-player Challenges and online multiplayer. And there’s the ongoing Achievement hunting…
Next-Gen: 6.6
While the game has been upgraded with improved graphics and sound, it unfortunately comes off like an old car with a great paint job It’s just not as impressive as it should be.
In regular (and usual) TeamXbox fashion, subtract an entire, whole point for the actual, Earth reality score of 6.3, which is around what I'd rate it from playing the demo.

7.5
The Good:
Hotswapping adds a fun dynamic to the gameplay; lots of vehicles and weapons to play around with; varied campaign; 24 player online multiplayer.
The Bad:
Arcadey, shooting gallery-like feel; vehicles don't control well; friendly artificial intelligence isn't so great.

thanks. I've been sort of on the fence, whether or not to pick this one up.

Screw it, I'll stick to the PC version.

The term "hotswapping" has always bothered me for some reason. Anyway, I'm not going to make the same mistake I did by buying the Xbox version. When this goes to around $20 I may pick it up.

Some of the funniest gaming you can have ATM with 2 or 3 pals playing. A for sure purchase for me.

Seems all of the reviews are based on the assumption that people have played the previous version and that it doesn't offer much more in the way of gameplay... What would it have been rated had this been the first version? (I haven't played any of them)

Well after playing the demo, I'm not suprised. The gameplay was very "meh" and the graphics were ugly on standard def.
EA has done graphical polish on alot of these "Next Gen" titles, but Burnout is the only title so far that has really benefited from what It seems by the reviews, and maybe Fight Night.
I'll pick it up when It's $20 or less.

Need for speed on 360 is alot better than the Xbox version.

Very disappointing. This is not what a next gen title should be. They simply don't deliver the PC experience on the 360. They could've, but they didn't.

Personally I think the problem with the demo is that the map sorta sucks. The map that was included in the Xbox demo was much more fun.
I'm definitely buying this. I enjoy playing it.

Edit: I've now flipflopped on my opinion of the game and am going to pick it up. I'm going to EB to reserve it today.

Normally I wouldn't buy a game at full price that I've been playing for over a year already, but I know all my Live buddies are going to have it and despite what reviews are saying, I think it's a pretty good upgrade. The one complaint I always heard people say of the Xbox version is that the hotswapping was ass with that line-of-sight nonsense. So EA fixes that, polishes the graphics, and people complain they didn't change the core gameplay. Call me crazy, but when I play it on PC, the actual gameplay is pretty much the only thing that was really great about Battlefield 2. Still, charging full price is a bit much. But then, they did it with Burnout Revenge (which, BTW, from what I remember shows less of a difference graphically between current gen and next gen, and is exactly the same game as far as mechanics, ect). Why didn't people bitch and moan about Burnout?

After playing the demo quite a bit more I'm really looking forward to picking this up. The game is just plain fun. It is a little arcadey but it is a blast and some of the stuff that happens is just flat out hilarious. I really enjoy putting C4 everywhere and blowing stuff up. I put C4 on the front of a jeep I was driving and then jumped out and let it crash in to a tank. As I jumped out I denotated the C4 while people and vehicle parts went flying everywhere. I'm hoping that the retail version has a bit more polish graphically than the demo but either way this should be alot of fun

I was going to get it if they added more players online and made it more like the PC version. The Xbox one was pretty fun, but it got old pretty quick. Boo EA, give us some real next gen games.
oh, and about burnout, the new online features made that one worthwhile, that and I sold burnout on xbox a while ago and its just fun to play through again.

The game may be available today at EB. On the 360 main page it now shows the ship date as yesterday 4/10/06. So hopefully it shipped yesterday and made it to the store today for pickup. I'll be heading to EB after work to check it out.

Attack of the Show gave this game "Must buy for 360 owner", but that guy is a tool at times also. He did NOT like Oblivion....saying the combat system was pretty poor (which I can agree with), but still a good game.
I will pass for now, unless some of my friends get it. Ghost Recon is good for me.
If I can somehow get this for $40 or lower, the price is right.
$60 for a straight-up rehash makes the doves cry.
And it's a little hard to have "mindless fun" on this one, because of the feedback system. Then again, every time I play Far Cry, some dickhead is betraying his teammates the entire game.

I take back my defense of the game some. I don't know why but the game almost looks worse than the demo did (which I thought looked pretty good). I mean, it doesn't look God-awful, but I'm still disappointed.

I actually thought the demo was ho-hum...but I took a chance on this (since I liked the PC version so much) and I'm glad I did. It is a solid shooter, and the best fps on live 360 right now, imo.
I'm interested in playing others here...send me an invite if you guys see me online.
Thanks,

Does anybody know if GameCrazy still had that $49.99 thing going on for this game? If not, I'll use the $5 off and put the $55 on my RZ card.

I thought I was going to be disappointed by BF2 on the 360, but I played it today at a friends house and it was REALLY fun. The graphics weren't the best, and the gameplay definitely wasn't next-gen, but the fun factor was off the scale. Of course, he does have a 56-inch widescreen HDTV. That might have helped a little bit.

Are you people Jaded already on the 360 graphics. I mean yes this game is not the best looking but for right now next to oblivion and Fight night this is as good as it gets. If you don't think this game looks good. I recommend picking up a NES and playing that instead.

I'm happy that EA didn't kill the demo when the game came out like they did with the Xbox version. I still play this all the time as my cheap ass tries to force myself to spend the cash and buy the full thing. Always lots of people playing the demo. :D
