View Full Version : Just spent $75 on a new game! Whats that make me?

I feel kind of weird just paying $75 to order a copy of MLB 2k6 for the xbox 360. That price tag is just ridiculous. Gaming prices are getting out of control and it is starting to piss me off. Getting to the point where I have to pay $75 to get a new 360 game when it launches.

Sure the price could have only been $65 if I use standard shipping, but I'm thhe kind of person who likes to get the new games ASAP so I use overnight shipping. And as you may or may not know I live hewe in winnemucca Nevada and my only gaming retailer is wal-mart. And the chances of them getting MLB this week are slim to none, and slim just left town. (A little quote I heard today) Hell my wal-mart hasn't even got in kingdom hearts 2 yet, which is also pissing me off.

Anyways back on point, $75 to get a new game is out fucking stupid!

So why the hell did you buy it? Did someone hold a gun to your head and tell you that you are to buy it or else your brains will be blown out? Was a hot chick offering you a "full meal deal with all the fixings and desert" just to buy it? Okay then I doubt either happened (especially the second one) so if anything you are the one who is fucking stupid since nobody but yourself made you buy it for $75. Yeesh there are far better priorities in life than a game - especially a baseball game that within a year will be in a discount bin.

LOL.

Yes, that's a lot to dump into a game.

But what's even crazier, it's a sports title. It pains me to pay $7.50 for a sports title since they drop so fast, let alone $75.

To each his own though. As long as you're happy about the purchase, that's all that matters.

Actually $75 games were quite common in the days of the SNES. I believe $75 is what my mother paid for Street Fighter II when it first came out. I think Chrono Trigger was $75 as well. The most I ever paid was $70 something for a new Tales of Destiny II from Defender's old site and $79.99 for Growlanser Deluxe. I don't make a habit of spending that much but as long as you enjoy the purchase that's all that matters.

If you lived in the old days you wouldn't be complaining... And why are you complaining on CheapAssGamer of all places. This is a place to find cheap stuff, not buy things at full retail price when they can be had for lower.

And the game is $59.99, the extra for shipping is due to your own impatience.

It's an Addiction I have loved sports all my life, basketball, football, baseball, I love them all dearly. I have other opinions on gamers who hate on sports, but thats not what this thread is for.

And to answer another user about it being my fault for spending $75 I am fully aware of that. It is an addiction to buy all the new video games, and I think by spending $75 on one game I realized my addiction and just how sad it is that developers keep jacking up prices and I keep paying them.

There is a major difference between "Chrono Trigger" and "MLB 2K6." The former is still worth its price since its a great classic game. The other one... well.... consider yourself lucky if its worth $5 in three years.

The problem is that the game costs $60... and you probably could have used a $5 off coupon at Best Buy to get it for $55... instead, you paid $20 more than you had to. It's not about what kind of game it is -- it's the fact that it's easily obtainable for far less.

Yup yup reminds me of the SNES days as well. Worse I ever did was spent $75 plus tax on a preordered Final Fantasy VI. Worth every damn penny though.

Last week I blew $70 on Oblivion Collectors Edition. And dammit, that was worth it too.

Overall though... I'm conflicted. I don't blame the developers for charging $60, NO MORE THEN THAT, for new 360/PS3 games. Since... looking at these games, they just GOTTA cost more to develop, yeesh. As a cheapass, it annoys me to no end. But usually... I just wait til the prices come down and never pay full retail.

It's gonna suck when $30 is the new Greatest Hits price though. THAT will piss me off if it comes to pass.

It is unfair to compare a common regular average sports game that will decrease in value within six months (MLB 2K6) to a much harder to find RPG that will only further increase in value due to a limited run (Suikoden II).

Honestly, you have no right to complain.

It was your choice to get the $15 overnight shipping instead of waiting the extra 3-5 days for normal shipping or till Tuesday when Wal Mart would have probably gotten it in stock.

It isn't like you were trying to get some game that is exclusive to Japan or some game with a 10,000 print run; it's MLB 2K6. It is guaranteed to be at every place that sells 360 games within a few days of being released and drop at least 50%+ in value within 6 months.

blah sports. Its your own damn fault for supporting the phenomenon by buying it.

most 360 owners are such impulse buyers/traders that you can find used versions of any 360 game a week or two later.. i've seen it with ghost recon, fight night, oblivion, call of duty, condemned, far cry... etc.

I vow not to buy any more brand new 360 games cause idiots tend to buy them and trade them the next week.

I paid $80 for Street Fighter II & Final Fantasy III the day they came out. I remember all or most of the SNES RPGs being $70 when they came out and alot of other SNES games being $60-70. And how cheap getting Suikoden seemed when I got it for $43 at Circuit City when it came out after being used to how expensive RPGs were on the SNES.

Precisely :)

That's how I felt about Street Fighter II also. Even though I paid $80 for it I played it almost everyday for about a year so I figured I got my money's worth. I probably spent plently more then that playing it at the arcade.

sports games are the best ones. If he is an idiot for doing this then what does that make people who bought Rhapsody and Persona 2 for $75.00 only to have them reprinted. Yes i know they didn't know that would happen at the time but oh well. Same with people who spend $90+ on suikoden ii and valk. profile. DO you consider them idiots? I would much rather pay $75.00 for a baseball game i can play over and over to no limit, than pay $50.00 for a game that has an ending and then your done.

Personally i consider paying $420 for a 360 stupid. I don't consider people idiots for doing it but to each his own i guess

That's not a fair comparison because rarity for Suikoden II doesn't compare to a sports game.

Plus, some RPGs have multiple endings and side quests, so you could have lots of replay time too.

And if someone had bought Suikoden II or Rhapsody when they were first released, they would have paid 45-55 dollars or so.

Your comparison isn't really fair.

Most people who buy a suikoden 2 or a Final Fantasy 3 probably let them sit around collecting dust and say " Hey I got RAREZ RPG and spent $100.00 on it, am I cool now"?

Yea the comparsion wasn't really fair since a sports game has way way way more replay. :)

Here's what I don't get... you say gaming prices are out of control, yet the game's MSRP is only $60... you paid $15 for overnight shipping, so maybe it's shipping prices that are out of control?

Maybe the problem isn't that game prices are expensive, it's that you live in the middle of nowhere, and pay out the ass for the conveinence of overnight shipping?

You say $75 to get a new game is fucking stupid, yet you yourself pay that extra $15 for a conveinence... you're acting like everyone has to pay $75.

Well overnight shipping is only $10 the other $5 was taxes, the average person pays about $65 for a 360 game so I only payed $10 over retail. And for the services of Shipping a game to my house overnight half way across the counrty, $10 ain't bad.

And for the record I never really complained about any of this. Just trying to make an overall statement that gaming prices are getting out of hand. I just had to defend myself because all these other peeps start calling me an idiot and hating on sports games.

I'm confused about this whole thread. Actually, I think CAGers were pretty restrained in their insults considering that the title of this thread invites insults.

If you wanted to complain about the price of games you should have just kept the thread limited to a discussion of $60 price tags for 360 games.

Personally I figure I'll be paying $15 for most of the 360 games that I buy (if I ever get a 360).

I don't think the OP is an idiot . . . actually, I'm glad there are people like him out there. We need plenty of big spenders to help grease the wheels of the industry. I'm content to cheapass my way through this hobby but if games only sold for $5-15 nothing would get made.

There are some games you just have to get as quickly as you can. I had to have Kingdom Hearts 2 so I payed $50 for it. I found a mint complete copy of Valkyrie Profile for $58 so I had to have it. Maybe It was stupid but I am glad I own these 2 great games. However, besides NCAA 2006, I have never paid near this much for a game. There are just certain games like the Final Fantasy series that I would pay this kind of money for. I don't think anybody is truly an idiot based on their game purchases but it is amazing at what we will drop on these things.

What will be the price of Kameo in, say, 2 years? Most likely $20.

If BB still has the GGC that makes it $15. Or, taking advantage of a sale (or some other kind of coupon) will bring it down to $15. Maybe a used copy.

I'm certainly not that hot to play any of the 360 games that I've seen to buy them for full price right now.

Outdated? If a game is worth playing, it will still be worth playing 2 years from now. Is it only the flash of graphics that is making people spend $60 for a game?

This attitude makes me all the more convinced that I'm better off waiting with this new generation of systems. Let the dust settle and the prices come down and then I will join in.

I'm still happy with the current games and I have a backlog of $5-$15 games to play.

I don't mind spending $75 on a game if I know it's a game I'm going to get a lot of fun/use out of. I paid $70 for Oblivion CE, and I've gotten over 50 hours of enjoyment out of it and I'm nowhere near being done. It's pretty sweet. The hitting takes some time to get used to as well as the pitching. The controls ar pretty standard. I figure it was a good purchase as Me an my friend will be playing a bunch of epic matches. I like the replay feature. Liek If a good play happened in the 4th inning, when that guy is up to bat in the 9th it will show the replay from back in the fourth. It adds realism.

I have a mem card, but I have a bunch of stuff and I don't think they will all fit on the mem card. I have 7 different gamer profiles on my 360 and all the downloaded stuff I would have to download again, and some data can't be transfered such as DOA4. And I have all characters and all outfits unlocked. I would hate to lose that. I'm going to see how much I can fit on my card though then decide if it is worth it or not.

Deepdiscountdvd allways has free shipping, but they dont have many games. Overstocks free/cheap shipping isnt too bad for me because they ship from SLC. I get most stuff in a couple of days.

edit: I know amazon has a shipping depot in either Fallon or Fernley. Regular ground shipping would be free and get to you in a day or two. But you will still be stuck with tax.

Exactly! On top of that old gamers know of a day in the 16-bit era when $69 carts were the norm. Basically any Square game was at least $69, if you got it at Babbage's you were looking at $74.99 minimum. Same thing for Ogre Battle and tons of other RPGS.

I new the hate on sporting titles would come, theres nothingnon sport fan gamers love to rip on more than spending money on a sports title.

People hate on sports games because game studios repackage the same crap from the year before with pretty new menus, an updated roster, and a few added baubles. Major portions of the underlying code is essentially the same as the previous umpteen incarnations. It bothers me that publishers charge full price even though most of the game is reused, and the only way to change this and promote creativity is not to buy it. Knowing this, I would rather give my money to a completely new game in a totally different genre.

In your case, since it is the first year of a baseball title on the 360 I can understand why you'd buy it since that is what you love. However, just knowing how fast sports games drop in price, I could never bring myself to even spend 19.99 on one, let alone 75 dollars.

Or you could search around and find that slow harddrives and freezing are usually caused by two things, poor air circulation for both the system and the power brick . Or a fragmented drive, which can be fixed by holding in the A button during boot. Back on topic? Why the fuck did you buy overnight shipping? A little late for that, but I love it now. After I fixed my freezing problem and can actually play my franchise mode it is great! It took about 5 games to finally get passed the learning curve but once I got over that hill i love it. A worthy purchase now and will probably be playing it until all ends of the night for the next few days.

Hopefully a patch comes out soon though so I don't have to keep taking my HDD out every time I want to play this game. Supposedly 2kgames is already working on it though so that's a good sign.

Although I cant speak personally for the OP, I am in about the same situation in a very rural Northern Nevada town. In these areas, some of the top employers are the government and mines. Right now, prices for precious and commodity metals are at all time highs. The mines pay alot of money, and the cost of living in these smaller towns is much less than in a bigger city. Although I havent looked at Winnemucca in a year, last year you could get a 3br house for about 70-75k. That is ridiculously cheap. And couple that with entry level mine jobs paying 50k/yr or more, you learn to live with some of the incoveniences. I work in healthcare and can work anywhere in the US, if not most of the entire deveoloped world. I make about 2.5x working in the country than I did in a big city. Plus my housing costs are super low. I bought a house recently for 125k. Where Im from originally, that wouldnt hardly get you a lot within 50 miles of town.
