Hi,
I've finally started Oblivion for the 360 and I've come across this serious problem...
Everytime I'd go into the menus, or open a chest, or talk to a person, otherwise interact with the environment, the game stops and thinks for a bit. It could range anywhere from 2 seconds to 10 seconds.
I've cleared the cache and I've tried putting my 360 vertically and horizontally. The powersupply is in the open (on carpet) and I moved the 360 onto the floor. It's in the open as well.
Any suggestions?
Could it be that it's in close proximity to my original Xbox and connected in the same outlet as a bunch of other stuff?
Thanks!

I doubt proximity to xbox and same outlet and stuff, may just be a 360 or game fault. I get the samething (once I started playing it wasnt like this, but now is) for when I try to take items and food in or out.
360 error, such as my 360 freezes whenever I try to play a oxm disk, didnt happen with my first disk, but now does.
Possibly try erassing the cache like 5 times in a row, while loading other games and stuff. Or try removing the HD and see if it still does this (to see if its a hd error)

My PC does this too for about a second. Cant say why because it does it even with low settings. My best guess is its trying to think up what in the chest and then it has to find the artwork for it.

Argh, this is frustrating. My 360 is brand new, I've turned it on twice in the past 2 weeks since I've had it. turned it on to make sure it works...
I hope I don't gotta ship it back or anything.
I've noticed that it freezes for long periods when tutorials pop up, or when the camera zooms into someone when they speak to you or you speak to them.

Not to alarm you or anything, but I suggest you try a different game (different title I mean) and see if you get any other problems (like a system locking up).
I noticed the same problems w/ Oblivion you're talking about even after doing the cache trick thing, but my games eventually completely locked up and I got the red lights yesterday.

Arr. It is slightly alarming ;)
Do you have a newer generation 360? And if any problems sprout up, I actually would rather them happen now rather than later, seeing as I didn't spring for the extended warranty...

Build date on mine was 12.01.05.
I didn't get the extended warranty through MS either, but I called and even though it was past the initial 90 day warranty I initially thought you were given, they didn't even ask a question on when I purchased it. They just put me through some diagnosing steps and said they'd send me a box.

Hmm, I've had this happen to me a bit when I first started playing-- like when the Emperor talks to you right away in the prison. The game would just stop, and then do the zoom in thing. It has since gotten much better, but what helped was clearing the cache and then starting over with a new character from the menu. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest trying another game, and seeing if you have similar problems

Relax, its just fragmented. All you have to do is hold the "A" button down until the bethesda logo shows up. This is well documented both here and on Bethesda's site.

He said he did that and STILL has the problem....do people read the first post anymore?
I still have freezing issues, but was a bit better last time I played.

Even thought I seriously doubt that it's the problem, take it off carpet, it might help

I received a response from Bethesda's support team. I explained my situation very carefully, and I got a copy and paste of their FAQ page.
I bit after that, I tried taking it off the carpet. It seems to work better, but I don't know, maybe it's just my head.
I put it vertically on top of a cardboard box so it was a few inches off the ground. I think I might try doing that to the power supply...
I'll let you know the results.
Oh yeah, I don't have any other 360 games yet, only OXM demo disks, and those worked fine, last time I tried em.

I did read the OP, but I'm saying (poorly, apparently) that he may not be doing it right. Doesn't anyone find it odd that the problem he describes is exactly the problem caused by a fragmented harddrive? Are you sure you did it right OP? If you have a wireless controller, it doesn't always work since you would need to be holding the A button in during the controller binding routine. My best results came when I plugged the play and charge kit in, then did the defrag.

Well I've tried every possible method, holding it down before the system starts, turning the controller on and then holding it and then turning the console on. I'm pretty sure I have done it correctly.

Try buying a memory card and not using the hdd. And, if you have both just remove the HDD like I do.
