Sadness Details --- Apr 11th 8:57 pm CDT
posted by JoshLindquist
Nibris has provided a few new details on their horror game for Revolution. First off, they were sure to let us know that the game is not an action title and we should not expect "liters of blood". The game is only meant for "adult players with strong nerves" and the storyline will involve topics like schizophrenia.
However, probably the biggest announcement involving Sadness is that the game will be played entirely in black and white. A Nibris staff member defended the idea saying that they were following Nintendo's example of setting new trends.
Nibris plans to launch a new website later this week which is supposed to include new information on their two titles, Raid over the Rivier & Sadness. Stay with DSRevolution for the latest news from Nibris.

This sounds pretty cool. I like the black and white idea. It could add to the scariness of the title. It's not about HD and storage space...its all about creativity.

Do liters of blood scare you. I find it comical. I'm sure there will be blood just not gushing excessive amounts whenever a charecter nicks his finger. Besides how can you hate on something before you try it. Frankly theres nothing at the moment i'm excited about on the PS3 at all. The 360 looks alright. And there are a handfull of things to look forward too and it currently has a decent library. If you're not into Racing(sim)/Sports or MGSolid what is there to look forward to on the PS3. Hopefully E3 will shed some light. At right now though i'm in the middle. But seriously the new Zelda game the 3 other titles from the people making this, Red Steel. And a bunch of other titles that have been hinted at I don't see how you can think Nintendo will keep the kiddy image. Do you really need to see Mario beating a hooker to death.

Honestly, Silent Hill (at least SH2) doesn't exactly have what I would call "liters of blood." I have yet to be nearly as freaked out by any other game.

Indeed! Seriously, Skelah, do you think that gallons of blood is the only way to make a game scary? Eternal Darkness has comparitavely little blood in it (save for one very bloody scene), even with it's nightmarish creature design, and I still say it's the scarriest game this generation, and the best horror-themed game in general. If you think that blood is the only way to make a game "not kiddy," then I defy you to play Eternal Darkness and come back and say the same thing. Even with it's low amount of blood, it's by far the most genuinely "mature," "adult," and "grown-up" horror game ever created.

What?!?!
Because a game can be scary without the use of gore and blood that instantly makes it a kiddie game (and therefore a kiddie system)?!?

Wow, making a game solely in black & white is a huge financial risk. This game sounds somewhat interesting to me (although there's not nearly enough info yet for me to look forward to it or anything). I really think making this black & white though is going to kill the sales numbers for this game. The general public isn't going to go into a store pick up the box and say "Cool, black & white!"

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I'd say it depends on what kind of black and white. If it's really worked on to make it a creepy, grainy B&W, it could be a great effect. If it just looks like an old Hitchcock film, probably not so great.
But low budget development usually leads to either low quality or high risk, sometimes both. Has anyone heard if they've picked up another publisher yet? I know they had a deal a few months ago that fell through.

Earlier today, NIBRIS Project Manager Piotr Orlowski notified Revolution Report that the new design for its Web site is nearly ready for launch. Alongside the new site layout comes more details about the developer's games.
Here is a preview of NIBRIS' updated Web site layout, with a new logo adorning the top left corner:
In addition, NIBRIS provided some details regarding its titles in development, which will be available on the new site when it officially launches towards the end of next week. Please note that all information is recited vebatim from Orlowski's report.
About Sadness:
Sadness (working title)
Category: Horror
Platform: Revolution
Date of Release: 2007 (tentative)
"...In my head there is a voice, different from the others. Whenever it answers it overwhelms the remaining voices, it mixes up thoughts and destroys peace. It tells me that I'm only mixed up in a thought which yearns to prove its own existence. The voice which whispers that I'm not really who I am and the perceived reality is only an abstraction created by my own mind. It is the original voice, which wants to free itself from my head, to free itself from the logic and reason it is being stifled by. The voice of animal endurance at all costs, which forces into unimaginable things. It is the voice of chaos which is now screaming frightfully in my head for me to take an axe resting against the wall and cut off my father's head."
~Maria Lengyel
The study of fear and the borders of human imagination... A trip to the darkest corners of consciousness, in all of us... A trip to the hell of the subconscious and not necessarily to return...
This gothic-horror (atmosphere) is not the an action game. If you're counting on shooting, liters of blood and piles of dead bodies then unfortunately you won't find this here. We are preparing for a mood which will not leave you until the very end of the game. An irregular scenario decides on such issues as schizophrenia or narcolepsy. Apart from an extremely complex and rich-in-shock-factor scenario, the power of our production is an innovative use of the Revolution controller.
Imagine driving away rats with a torch, throwing a rope (as a lasso) when you want to climb over the wall, or slitting the throat of a persecutor with a piece of glass... All of this with the help of the Revolution controller. And this is only the beginning... We'll take you on a journey to which no one has taken you before. The only question is are you ready to experience it?
Attention! Game only for adult players with strong nerves.

Some of the greatest movies of all time were in black and white.
I think the point is that this game could be the coolest game in the world, but has the potential to fail miserably because retards will be thrown off by it not being in color.

I think I need to explain this for a lot of you people
If you're counting on shooting, liters of blood and piles of dead bodies then unfortunately you won't find this here. We are preparing for a mood which will not leave you until the very end of the game.
Key words are "If you're counting on" And take note of the next sentence. There saying it's mood driven and if you like shooting and killing hundreds of people as well as copius amounts of blood that you see in the likes of Motal Kombat 1, and Killer7 then this is not the place for you because you won't find it here. They probably will show blood because for one thing it would be wierd for it not to be there in certain scenes. And second it's black and white and already M rated so who cares.
Seriously people. Put in one sentance.
There will be blood because what they said was refering to mood and what type of game it will be. So stop taking things out of context.

Damn straight! I'm sick and tired of developers thinking that I'm mature and can handle an intelligent plot with well-written characters! Fuck that. Just give me some blood and let me play in my own filth like a real adult.
Seriously though, this game seems awesome. I'm looking forward to more developers taking risks like these to provide new gaming experiences.

Yeah, please don't misunderstand my comments on it being black & white; they weren't meant to speak on the quality of the game at all. I was purely talking about how making this game black & white almost certainly (in my mind at least) means that this game will not sell well with the general public.
If it's a good game, that means we'll see a quick price drop and us CAGs will be able to pick it up cheap. If it's a bad game, we've all just wasted our time even talking about. Either way, I'll definitely be waiting on this one to have the price drop it is screaming for.

I don't get why so many people love Eternal Darkness so much. I played through it (one out of the three times) and it was good enough for me not to quit playing I guess but not so good as to make me want to play through it two more time to get the super duper ending or whatever... I felt like the combat and magic systems were kind of broken... It wasn't horrible or anything just slightly above average to me...

I think people are attracted to all the things that happen "outside" the actual gameplay... Did you play through the green? path which in turns allows you to see more of the "extras"?
Or did you keep your guy pretty well stocked full of magic, health and whatever else it was called?

if the development costs are low enough, they wont need to sell a million copies to see a return. And Depending on the size of the print run, it may do the opposite of dropping in price.

Thanks to fart_bubble for the heads up on this look at the game:
For anyone not following Revolution news (and that's still apparently just the code name for the system), it's going to include a controller that looks a lot like a TV remote but can sense movement and rotation in all directions. So when Nibris talks to Revolution Advanced about having you slit a character's throat in the game, throwing a lasso, and waving a flaming torch around, you aren't going to be doing those by pressing a button, but instead by performing the actual motions you'd imagine. Slowly slitting a throat by moving your hand...that all sounds rather grim. Perhaps too grim.
Still, describing the game as "Gothic Horror" and saying that it's not going to feature piles of dead bodies suggests a much slower and psychological game than most, so throat slitting is probably a rare occurrence. Combine that with the very interesting graphical direction the game is taking, namely being rendered entirely in black and white, and Sadness sounds like it could be a very striking game.

Well I'll give you that the magic system was broken and furthermore the insanity system in the sense that soon enough it was TOO easy to replenish magic and insanity just via certain spells. I wish there would've been items you collect to replenish it or they had NO magic constant replenish spell. Mostly for me it's the plot but I guess you don't like Lovecraft.
