View Full Version : Zelda: A Link to the Past -- Which version's better?

I was wondering whether the GBA version or SNES version of Zelda: LTTP is better in terms of graphics, sound, and content. I have absolutely no interest in the multiplayer only Four Swords, so this is based entirely on the single player game. Anyway, does one version stand out as being better than the other?

I like the original SNES one better, if only because
1) You can play it on a TV
2) You can use the SNES controller, and most importantly
3) They don't have that retarded Link voice everytime you swing your sword.

Go with the SNES. Using the R button run fast is kind of uncomfortable, though I wish you could have used that in minish cap.

Umm,those are meanless if you got a gameboy player, use the voulme control and snes controller is horrible when its a flat with crappy dpad.
you can check the changes in gamefaqs. Most of them are very small changes."SNES/GBA Changes FAQ"

I would rather pick the gameboy version because of the convience of playing in gba,sp,micro or ds rather then bring out the snes.Plus,it portable so you can play it in the jon(not recommended) and extra quest is pretty good if you got the mulitple pepple.Aww,this reminded me of the Eb old mourning. The game sold like $7 and some change for it.

They're basically the same graphically and content wise, though the GBA version adds a voice to Link, and slightly changes some of the dialogue. Personally, I'd rather play it on the go, so I prefer the GBA version (the Four Swords game included on the cartridge is also really fun, though it requires at least two GBAs and two game packs, though one could be Minish), though you could probably find a used SNES version for a bit cheaper.

SNES all the way.
Mostly because it feels more nostalgic, to me.
But on the other hand, I'm much more liable to play a GBA game than an SNES game, for convenience purposes.

The Ice Temple was also made easier in the GBA version wasn't it?

I only own the SNES version, but if I ever catch the GBA version used for under $10, I'll jump on that.
I'm hoping it will be available on the Revolution virtual console, myself.
um the GBA version added a new dungeon and a new move. I will take that version over SNES.

No it didn't. You're thinking of Zelda DX.

I only have the SNES version. I bought it last year at EB, And when I Started playing it, all other games were put on hold. Awesome game. If you want more nostalia, get the SNES version. But if you want the complete game (case, manual), you could pick up the GBA version. I had this same choice to make last year and I chose the SNES one, and I'm not regreting it.

Nope. The new dungeon is inside the Pyramids of power, with Dark Link as the new boss.

That dungeon was short and stupid, though. Seriously, it felt very tacked on.
I'm still right; SNES all the way.

Hmmm, this make me want to break out my copy on my GameBoy Player.
Anyone have an extra Hori Pad for the Gamecube that they'd like to sell or trade me? Shoot me a PM if you do.

Games look much, much better on a SNES than Gameboy Player (I have both and I've compared LTTP & Super Mario World). GBA games were simply not meant to be played on big screen.
The games are basically the same, it just depends on whether you want to play portable or at home more.

Couple things I want to note:
First, portability means absolutely nothing to me.
Second, was the extra dungeon available without playing Four Swords or do you actually have to play through that in order to get it? I don't really care about the inclusion of another dungeon if I'd have to bother with 4 Swords.

They pussified the Ice Palace in the GBA version and and added the whiny screams from Link. I say SNES all the way...

I played and finished both SNES and GBA versions of LTTP. And I like both versions equally. Although the GBA version is good in that I can play it while watching TV. I couldn't do that with the SNES version.

If portability means nothing, get the SNES one. You have to beat 4 Swords to get the extra dungeon.

I think the SNES versions don't hold saves anymore, do they? I think you'll have to crack it open and replace the battery inside of it. If that's the case, go with the GBA version to avoid all that hassle.

SNES games will still save games fine. You might find some that wont, but the majority of them still will. If you want to play the game for what it was originally meant to be, play the SNES version. If you want something to play on the go that is basically the same game (who care about the extra dungeon, it DID suck) then get the GBA version. Both are amazing, so whichever choice you make will be a good one.

The sound is better on the Super NES version. That Sony sound chip was a masterpiece.

Yeah the sound just seemed off on the GBA version. it's good, but only for portability. The SNES version is superior.. if only because I spent so much of my childhood with that game, and any change throws me off.
