You just need a TV capable of a 480p display (not hi-def) but your TV is more than capable. You need special cables and a Gamecube with the right port on the back. They stopped manufacturing them with the progressive scan capability about a year or so ago so it depends on how new your GCN is...

Unfortunately for you, yes. The difference in clarity and detail is like night and day.

The problem you're going to have these days is getting component cables, thats IF youre gamecube even has digital out.
The cables are sold out from Nintendo, and they told me they wont be re-stocking.

The Nintendo store in NYC has them...

Mine does.
I think they stopped putting it after they did that Metroid Prime w/ Echoes demo bundle a while back. I remember reading about the bundle in IGN and it warned that new Cubes would not have the digital out.
I'm glad I got one with the digital out, the improvement is welcome but I wouldn't say it's like night and day... more like, night and dusk.:)

It makes text alot more clear and makes signs in games readable. But it can show jaggies more too.

yeah i bought the mario kart paltinum bundle and mine doesnt have those ports. playing video games in high def is a huge difference. clearer pictures, more bright colors.

If you call Nintendo and tell them you want to get a Cube with the Digital Video Out port, they will be more than happy to do a swap of your cube for a refurb with the digital out port. They also give you another year warranty. And finally, they'll ask you if you want to order the Component cables. Overall, it's an extremely easy process if you don't mind not having a Gamecube for a couple of weeks.

Let us know how it goes. Im curious as to whether nintendo will swap cubes anymore since they supposedly dont even have any more cables and have no plans to stock them in the future. Thats what the rep i spoke to said, and others have reported the same.

I'm expecting the revolution to be able to play these games at 480p, if not use the same component cables as the cube. Since I can barely make a dent in my backlog of games, I'm not missing out yet.
And if the revo isn't backwards compatible 480p, I'm still not convinced the difference is that huge on most games. Anybody have screens to compare?

I don't think the difference is major. I think if you have a new TV, that in and of itself, will make the games look alot better. I think that's where half the difference comes from. If I play games in my living room on my Toshiba TV then they look at lot more clear than playing them on my el cheapo TV upstairs. And both are 480i.
The other half is because there is a certain higher clarity to progressive scan. The picture isn't as fuzzy because it doesn't have all the artifacts that interlaced TV brings. The biggest difference I noticed is text is displayed about as clear as on my pc monitor.

I'm not an expert, but the current Gamecube does support S-video cables, which I think gets you pretty close to a component cable-quality picture. You can get s-video cables from the Nintendo store for $16.

I don't have an HDTV so I don't know for sure, but I would think S-Video would only be close to Component quality if the game doesn't support Progressive Scan (which is turned on by holding B upon startup of the game).

It's actually not that different. Aside from the colors being a little more uniform in zelda and the text being a little clearer, the difference between Component and S-Video is not that big.

I'm actually slightly suprised you even had to replace it, those things are sturdy mo' fuckas.

Actually, if they create component cables for the Revolution, they'll probably work with the Gamecube. Nintendo tends to use the same video outputs on their systems.
