View Full Version : 3rd Person Hack and Slash with Leveling.

After remembering how much I liked the ground combat in Drakan, I was hoping to find a good 3rd person hack+slash adventure game with some form of leveling (ex. killing things makes you stronger, not killing things earns you money to buy stuff). However, I don't want a Dynasty Warriors type of experience where I can kill 10 or so guys with a swing of my sword, and I don't want a Morrowind experience where I fight 1 guy. Also, finding loot, exploring, and little side-quests are always good.

I don't really know how to distinguish between these two types of games, but I can give examples of what would be good and what would not. Gauntlet games are 3rd person hack+slash, but thats certainly not what I mean. Fable on the other hand is exactly the kind of thing I mean. I'm not looking for a clone of said games, just something with simular elements.

I hope I've made some sense.

Also, final question, I've seen a game called.. Kingdom Under Fire or something like that, and that looked pretty decent but also pretty simular to dynasty warriors. Any thoughts on that game?

Thanks again.

Kingdom Under Fire is a decent game that's one part RTS and one part Dynasty Warriors. The game takes some getting used to, mostly because of the control scheme, but is lots of fun if you stick with it. As you fight, you gain experience and gold which can be distributed among your units to increase their strength and equipment. Still, I don't know if it quite fits the game description you're looking for.

It hard to distungish games with 3rd person hack and slash with rpg elements such as level up and items. There so many of them.Devil May Cry,Onimusha,Dynasty Warriors,Castlevania, oblivion and etc.I will prefer getting devil may cry 3 greatest version,Onimusha and Castlevania Double Pack. All the game are very fast pace, low degree of difficulty and low learning curve.

I can't really say about Kingdom Under Fire because I'm a war nut.I love military stategy games like Romance,Advance Wars,Military Madness,Dai Seiyku,Age of Empires,Starcraft, and Warcraft.Kingdom Under Fire is a combo of Shogun for pc with the miliary movements and hack n slash of Dynasty Warriors, the hack part more like Kessen instead. The strategic movement add a bit of stratgey in that game. The biggest weakness is the hack n slash part.Very little attack combo I think 3 combo per character. The story is very good,a little too much lotr resemblance.

Oh yes! I forgot about this. I remember reading that they had some pretty good production values and some good voicework. Thanks for reminding me.

If you don't mind difficulty you should try "Enclave". It's a pretty good dungeon crawler with multiple characters to play with and upgrade.

There's also the games like Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath and the Bard's Tale which sound pretty much like what you're looking for.

Sudeki was pretty good I thought, very much the same control/feel of fable.

If those games are acceptable to you, and you feel like venturing outside of the high fantasy setting, I'd also recommend the 2 Hunter the Reckoning games. You can pick them up for like $10 each. They control soo awesomely too! Left stick runs around, and the right stick points your weapons, and the triggers fire. So you can get that Robotron/Smash TV feel where your movement and firing are completely independent of each other.

Demon Stone was cool, and so was that Dungeons and Dragons game that came out a couple years ago.

It's funny you should mention this. I had been wanting the first Hunter: The Reckoning game since it came out, and found a few weeks ago at EB for $7.99 used. My brother-in-law and I played about an hour of it 2 weeks ago. Pretty fun, but I haven't figured out how to use any of the other special powers ("edge"). Do you only start with 1, and then gradually receive the other abilities later in the game? I only have the Heal ability, but my bro's character shoots this beam that kills anything in it's path.

I think we had this same exchange in another thread the other day! lol

iirc, you get points that you can invest in your edge powers. Either that, or you raise your ability scores, and when they reach certain levels, you earn a new edge power... Its been a while for me. I dont remember there being more than 2-3 edge powers per character tho.

Definitely loads of fun with a friend. My wife and I blew thru these games in a few days each back when we picked them up. The modern gothic, werewolf, vampire, rave kids, theme was refreshing for me. After playing Baldurs Gate 1&2, and Champions of Norrath 1&2 I was getting tired of fighting goblins with swords...

Also try Otogi 1 and 2 (xbox) and Blood Will Tell (ps2)...

I Second Dungeons and Dragons Heroes. There is also Arx Fatalis you should look into. And the Three Lord of the Rings games (The EA games, not the Vivendi one).

The Baldur's Gate esque games are the type of game that I want to stay away from. That includes the Hunter series. While I have nothing against those games, it doesn't have the right kind of feel. Maybe its the camera?

Heres some more examples in an attempt to describe the type of game:
Dark Cloud
3D Zelda Games
Mech Assault 2 (like... replace sword swinging fellows with the mechs)

I guess its like.. 3rd person camera that is centered behind the character, action is relativaly realistic (no crazy jumps off walls or flying through the air ala Devil May Cry) with the understanding that magic plays a role. So its a slow-paced action game where blocking and looking for openings plays a more important role over mindless hacking.

Jade empire and Sudeki.

Yeah, good call on Jade Empire. Everyone calls it an RPG, but it's honestly a hack & slasher through and through. Once I had Paralyzing Palm to go with my Thousand Cuts, I just alternated between them, tapping Light Attack all the while, and I could beat everything in the game (except the last boss) without breaking a sweat.

Oh, and the thing I liked about the Hunter games was how well animated the characters were, in spite of their small size: they had knife twirls, no-hand cartwheels, and one handed reloads, if you looked closely. Good times.

I saw a video on Sudeki, and that looks pretty sweet. Only problem is that camera.. it pans out away from the action so you can see more than usual. I want that camera squarely centered on the character's shoulders. It feels so impersonal when the camera isn't right there with you.

As for the computer.. I realize this is the xbox forums, but obviously I have a computer or have use of one.. care to suggest a couple titles for the PC?

Sidenote: Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I'm not ignoring the posts of those who I don't specifically respond to, I just add your games to my "check it out" list and offer you my thanks here.

As for Jade Empire, another awesome game which I have played and beat many times, but again the camera zooms way out when in battle.

Thought of another good example. Rakion: Chaos Force by the Gunbound people is a perfect example. Camera is nicely locked behind the character, blocking plays an important role, theres stat lvling and armor and weapons to buy..

The camera never bothered me, the only thing crappy about it was a fairly weak story, but I did beat it. I like the fighting system, hopefully they release a sequal. If you love Jade and Fable, I think this is the one you should try.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned (unless I missed it) Lord of the Rings: ROTK. It's very hacky and slashy and has levelling up of the various characters you play - still it's pretty far removed from a true RPG.

I worshiped it for 6 years. I had to uninstall because it was preventing me from playing any other games.. much like Guild Wars now lol. Hellgate London looks awesome though.

Alright, I bought Enclave and I'm happy to say it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Good hack n' slash combat where blocking is required and the camera is right behind your character at all times. Cheers to Professor Oreo for suggesting it!

Glad I could help buddy.;)

I really enjoyed the game myself even though some parts were frustrating as all hell. Getting 100% of the gold in each level is no easy task, but you feel like a goddamn superhero if you can pull it off. And just so you know, I thought the "dark quest" was even better than the "light quest". So once you beat the game, you can start over from scrath as the bad guys and it's like a whole new different game.
