blech, that goes against everything metal slug stood for...online deathmatches anyone?

looks like SNK is moving away from 2D...that's a shame.

First Bomberman, now this... some devs need to realize just because you CAN make something 3D, doesn't mean you have to.

Some series should REALLY just stick to 2D (Street Fighter, Castlevania, Megaman). Metal Slug is no exception to that statement.

At least it's got some of the stylistic elements right. Metroid survived the jump to 3D, so who knows; maybe it'll work.

I loved both megaman legends. they are very well made, now for fanboys it probably made their penises shrivel a bit. But I enjoyed playing through them

As for MS3D, will it be in arcades?

NO! Metal Slug was great because it was 2D. Cancel this title immediately!

Huh, I actually didnt even look at the images till now. It doesnt look that bad. I'd still say stick with 2d but I WILL give it a shot (pun intended)

It COULD work. It really could. They'd have to do something like map movement to the left stick, and aiming to the right. And it'd take a hell of a lot of talent by them to make it work... oh gawd it's very likely it'll be HORRIBLE. But heres hoping they pull it off. Cuz to me, the screenshots look fun. *puts on flamesuit

Sure it could be good, but it won't be Metal Slug. It'll be <insert generic 3rd-person action/shooter title here>.

MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!! Castlevania 3D = Crap. Worms 3D = Crap. Mortal Kombat in 3D = Crap. Metal Slug can only follow suit.

Now hang on. Castlevania: Lament of Innocence was good. Oh, but yeah, the rest I suppose work.

So was Curse of Darkness... if you liked Lament of Innocence, CoD is much improved over that.

Mortal Kombat in 3D is alot better then the 2D games, were every character had the same moves and 800 ninjas looked the same.

The new MK may be my most anticipated game this year.

Lots of games have transitioned well to 3D... at least give SNK a chance, I'm happy they are trying something new rather then recycling the same 10 year old sprites.

There are also 2D games that made a successful leap into 3D, such as Mario and Ninja Gaiden. Metal Slug 3D could be a good game, but I can't tell from a few screenshots.

I totally agree that most 2d games should stay 2d because the gameplay mechanics involved with those games do not translate well in 3d. Great franchises like Castlevania, Final Fight, Contra, Worms and Megaman were butchered in the transition. But if it was done right you'll have excellent games like; Gran Theft Auto, Mario 64, Metroid Prime, Zelda, Metal Gear and Maximo aka:Ghouls n Ghost

I gotta disagree... as was noted earlier, Megaman Legends wasn't that bad, and certainly did not "butcher" the series. The 3D Castlevania's people either love or hate... I personally love them.

Final Fight could EASILY be done in 3D if Capcom gave two shits about the series. Rockstar made The Warriors work extremely well, so everyone knows beatem up's can be done in 3D. I hard Urban Reign really wasn't that bad, either.

Worms is an abomination in 3D, Contra could be done with alot of work (but earlier 3D efforts were horrible).

I really don't think gameplay mechanics like "whip candles and bats" and "punch people in the face" are things that can't be translated to 3D. The only reason Metal Slug will fail is because SNK dosen't have alot of experience with 3D, not because it can't be done.

Yeah, I'm also a little surprised this one resurfaced. It's been in development forever - Mega is the developer, same people who made Metal Slug 4. They're Korean. I talked to them a bit way back at the 2004 GDC, and even then the game had been in development for a while. I'm also skeptical of whether the game will turn out to be any good, but I'll give it a chance. I'd PREFER 2D, but I'll still try 3D Metal Slug. Can't be worse than KoF's transition to 3D.

Oh, and Metal Slug 5 is quite good Strider! One of the best in the series if you ask me. MS4 is not as bad as people say either, it's very much an homage to the original MS. I kinda appreciate that, instead of the wacky aliens and zombies themes of MS3 and 5.

As for MS6 - it's announced for PS2?!?!?!? Seemed inevitable, with all the other Atomiswave games making it to PS2. But still, official word would be super super nice!

Well, I wouldn't say they were terrible games but the overall game designs were a step down from MS3 & X.

they should just have a 3d version with 2d control... it would make both the animators/developers and gamers something to emjoy.

Hey, at least they are trying something new(er) with the series. At least give them credit for taking some sort of risk.

I must have missed the part in Metal Slug where you were commanding an army. Though the graphic style is similar, I don't expect it to play like Battalion Wars. Battalion Wars was good (though not as good as Metal Slug 1-3), this will not be (though neither were Metal Slug 4-5).

EDIT: I'd also like to add that the only series that have improved when transitioning to 3D are Grand Theft Auto, Prince of Persia (not on it's first try though), Metal Gear, Indiana Jones, and Mario Kart. While other series have had good 3D games (Mario, Zelda, Monkey Island), they have been inferior to their 2D roots.

I was sooo hoping this was cancelled. There were a few years where the Metal Slug 3D just disappeared, and I was hoping it would stay away. Poo. The game doesn't really look better than it did back then, either.

Maybe the supposidly amazing next-gen Metal Slug Evolution will be better.

And at least Metal Slug 6 is still 2D.

No....Metal Slug was great because it had good gameplay and was challenging(well some Metal Slugs >.>).

Granted some games suck ass when they try to make the jump from 2D to 3D, i think just as many high profile franchises have done it right too as many have said.

The first Prince of Persia was godly. I don't think they improved it with PoP: SoT (I am assuming that you are talking about Prince of Persia 3D being the first 3D PoP game right?) I also think that Ninja Gaiden improved on the jump to 3D, but the new Ninja Gaiden and the old ones are really different I guess so it does not count.

I think a 3D Metal Slug game could work if it was on the Revolution, but not on any system out now.

I think people are speculating way too early. Nobody's even played the damn game. I say that anyone can say what they want once there's been at least one hands-on report.

I want to point out though that the textures look too much like PSP textures... slightly muddy. Plus marco is freaky as hell in 3D.

Novel idea - DON'T KEEP PRESSING START TO CONTINUE IF YOU DON'T WANT UNLIMITED CONTINUES!!!!!!

I'd much rather have the option to continue than to not have it. Use some self-restraint, man. I personally like to try to beat my best record for least continues used. If I can one-credit it, awesome. But I'd rather be able to credit-feed through and use 17 continues to finish the game and see everything, then go back and play it again to get better. I'm not really into the "oh, you used up your three continues - back to the beginning of stage 1" school of thought.

Of course, I'm not one of the jackasses who thinks that "beating" a game means you should never touch it again. I've played through the original Metal Slug dozens of times, and I'm much happier having been able to continue my way through than I would be if I had limited lives and no option to continue. I'm the one spending the money on the game, let ME decide whether I want to continue or not.

Ah, but is that being released here?

If you're a fan of SNK, surely you know by now that it's time to start importing... right?

With all the time some people complain about crappy US releases, SCEA "anti-2D" policies, and SNKP USA's incompetence those same people probably could have earned enough money to buy a Japanese PS2 and the entire library of SNK Japanese releases. Of course, if you want to deal with the long wait for slightly cheaper US ports (that may or may not come), that's your call. It really isn't that hard to get into imports though.
