View Full Version : Really enjoying Resident Evil DS (after RE4)
I just finished Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube. It piqued my curiosity about the older titles in the series. A lot of people basically said you CAN'T go back to the older games. Well I did...and I'm enjoying it. It isn't RE4 but since I never played the original and expected worse I'm finding myself sucked in.
I know a lot of people don't like the controls but they become natural after playing for 5-10 minutes. Once you feel comfortable running and turning around it becomes fun. I think the quick turnaround probably helps a bit too although I don't find myself using it really. It is slower than RE4 but I can definitely see how the series evolved.
I'm digging that the DS version has basically no load times (not sure if the playstation or other versions have them). It's nice to have this game in portable form...where I seem to have more time to play these days.
I think once I finish classic mode with both characters I'll try the rebirth mode. I may also be picking up the the other games for the cube. Good stuff!

quick question-- does it still show the door opening every time you enter a room?
if not, i might pick this up.

Yeah, RE4 was definitely a big step forward for the series, but that doesn't instantly make the older games suck - they had their moments. I do find it hard to go for RE DS after REmake on the GC, but that has nothing to do with mechanics - just the beautiful graphics of the GC version...
And it's "piqued", not "peaked".

It shows it, but there are no load times. You can skip the door sequences.

Yeah you can skip them...a press of the action button stops them all together. I watched the door and stair sequences a few times because it was cool the first few times....now I realize how great it is that you can skip them.

The nostalgia alone made me get this game and enjoy the hell outta it. I was also impressed at how well I did the first time through, beat it in about 4:30 with 3 deaths, with Chris. Still a great fun game in its own right.

I would argue that RE2 is a better overall game than RE4, but it's a tough call. I've never heard anyone say it's tough to go back to the old titles, despite how much ass RE4 kicked. I'm glad to hear everyone is enjoying RE:DS, though--I was a little nervous when I saw the original screenshots. I'll probably pick it up eventually.

Well I played through RE4 three times before I took REDS for a spin, and RE4 didn't "dilute" the experience for me at all.
But then again, I am an RE fanatic

Hows the multiplayer on RE DS anyways? Does it require multi carts?

Do you have a GameCube? If so, throw RE: DS aside and pick up Resident Evil for the GameCube. Its so much better my friend.

OP, was the game at all scary when you played? I mean, when you put on headphones and are in a dark place and playing at night, does a portable game have the potential of being frightening?

So, I'm confused. Which RE game is this a remake of? Or is it a brand new story?

It's not really a remake. It's a port of RE1 with new features that make use of the touch screen.

Anyways, I'm kind of stuck and I have no more bullets, so I think I can allow myself to ask for some help here. Btw, I totally suck with the knife, it seems to do 0 damage to zombies. I have the acid shells but no launcher. Anyway, I got the coin from the dog collar, and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it (along with the emblem and blue gem and wooden mount). I tried to get the mansion key in the ground and replace it with the coin but it didn't work.

I do have a gamecube. I also own the Resident Evil Remake. I played RE4 first without ever playing any RE games because almost everyone I know who plays games asked me why I haven't played it yet. So I dove in and LOVED it. I seem to have more handheld time so I picked the DS version ...I figure since the Cube version is different and better it wouldn't hurt to play it after the DS version. Now I'll probably get 2 and 3 as well. Maybe even 0 and veronica as I am enjoying these games.

Not really. I think I'm also a little more accustomed to looking out for zombies and what not.

Quick question to anyone who has RE: DS. Are there any slowdowns or frame rate problems at all?!

Well, I had it for awhile before I traded it away. Its cool that its portable and you can skip the door sequences, but...once I realized how many times I have played RE1 in the past I just couldnt bring myself to play all the way through it again.
Oh yeah, I also thought the touchscreen tapping parts in rebirth mode were well...annoying.

Yeah, I pretty much have that problem perpetually...I'm pretty trigger-happy, so I spend most of the time running from zombies like a little girl.
No offense to little girls, who are probably better at the game than I am...

None that I've experienced in my first play through.
