Just announced, a couple sequels to Lumines and, of primary interest, Meteos: Disney Edition. Bizarre, but potentially very cool:

If it's WiFi, yes, I'm in... cause Nintendo evidently owns my willpower and has disposed of it.

Wait, you're asking me to read something outside of the Nintendo forums? But...but...that's MADNESS. ;)

If it has wi-fi then I won't be ashamed to be 24 and picking up a disney themed game.

As much as I love Meteos, I fucking hate Disney more than I hate sports and professional athletes. And that's a lot of hate!

Someone painted a compelling picture in a comment following the story on 1up:
Launching Goofy onto orbit and hearing his "Yah-hoo-hoo-huey!" yell... Genius!

If it has Stitch, I'll own it. Hell, I might get two copies so me and my GF can play it together (depending on how good the single cart MP is).

I can see it being like Kingdom Hearts a little bit, in that instead of traveling to different planets, you travel to different Disney realms. So there might be a Nightmare Before Christmas board, a Lilo & Stitch board, and so on, each with its own unique meteos, playfield, music, and sounds. I think it could work quite well, actually.
You know the gameplay's going to be there. The theming is going to be a bonus to some (like me) and an annoyance to others, but I think if the developers go the extra mile and throw in Nintendo WiFi support, they'll sell scads.

Good lord. No.
Please. No.
Please. No.
Why not Nintendo themed, like Tetris? Hell, I'd take Meteos 1.5 over this crap.
Not Disney. Please. No.

Reading the article on planet gamecube, Buena Vista Games is going to publish this. Thus, I'm not surprised that it will be Disney themed since Disney does in fact own Buena Vista.
Plus, the theme of it shouldn't discourage others as long as the gameplay is still Meteos-like.

I actually thought the Nintendo themes in Tetris were kind of lame. Not that the source material itself was lame, just that they implemented it badly and unattractively. So reserve judgement on the new Meteos -- Disney and all -- until you actually see how they handle it.

as long as it has Aladdin and Lilo and Stitch, I'd get it.....I still have yet to get a DS though.

I was trying to picture how it could work....and this makes a lot of sense. Moroever, I think it is a *good* idea. I remember thinking before that as much as I love Meteos, I'm not sure I would re-buy it just for wi-fi play or minor updates (the same reasoning is why I have not bought Tetris DS). Having a well-implemented (big assumption, perhaps) application of Disney theming where you have really cool music and fun graphics (not *just* pictures of characters in the background) along with wi-fi would be enough to push me into buying.
Hopefully they'll recognize the popularity of the Steamboat Willie world in Kingdome Hearts II (not that I've played it--but I hear people love it.....I would love to play it, but since Kingdom Hearts and Katamari are about the ONLY reasons I'd buy a PS2, the Cheapass in me hasn't bit).

Another thought: This makes me wonder if Meteos didn't sell well....it seems like they know they have solid gameplay, but are looking for more ways to get it noticed. I suppose Lumines sold better, and that's why they aren't bothering with the Disney theme? Or is the PSP too "mature" for Disney.
Hmmmm

The techno music and backgrounds along with the gameplay sold Lumines. The gameplay sold Meteos, not the multiple planets bit.

The Wi-Fi and extra modes (especially Push) are actually worth it.

Whatever, I'm a grown-ass man and I'll admit that I like Disney. Sure, the Disney Channel sucks, as have some of their more recent movies, but the majority of Disney's feature-length animations and early cartoons are some of the best things you could ever watch.
...and I, too, want to send Goofy into space.

That's cool, Disnazi. Some people don't like those retarded-looking characters. Live with it.

Regarding Tetris DS:
I respect your thoughts...but for me I just was never *that* into Tetris to begin with...and the WiFi is a minor selling point for me. I *have* gone online a few times for Mario Kart and Metroid Prime Hunters.....but every time I have been absolutely crushed. I don't need to win all the time, but coming in last place every time isn't superfun either. It's not a fault of the games--just a matter of fact that I suck :-)
I haven't played a Mario Kart game since the SNES and have never really played first person shooters....so it would take a lot of time for me to get good enough to even compete on Wi Fi.
The same would be true for Tetris and most any game, as I am a casual gamer...so I just don't find Wi Fi a big selling point for me (even though I have a sound connection at home). Again though, that's true for me and won't be for lots of others.
The Wi-Fi and extra modes (especially Push) are actually worth it.

I'm not sure what's worse, this or "Wii".
I find myself hoping each is an April 1st thing.
But we'll have to live with "Wii" (which we'll get used to) and "Disney Meteos," I will never accept.

Between KH2 and now this, I'm sorta feeling like going to Disneyland this year.

You guys obviously haven't heard: Disney is cool now. I mean, they killed two people in the last year on Mission: Space alone; an old lady and a little kid, no less! According to the GTA school of social politics, that makes them pretty bad ass.
