View Full Version : Revolution Name Revealed - Nintendo Wii? WTF?
mr ryles

After thinking about this for a couple hours, I've come to this:
Revolution SOUNDS cooler, but Wii LOOKS cooler. Yeah, it sounds dumb, but it's a much better logo. I never liked any of the fan-designed Revolution logos and trying to come up with a compelling visual concept using a long word like that is difficult, if not impossible. Wii offers infinitely more possibilities in that department. But there's no getting around the fact that it sounds silly when spoken aloud.
Ya it is pretty hard to summarize "revolution" into a picture/logo.

The average consumer, on the other hand, will look at it and pass it right by. Names and name recognition matter, plain and simple.
I don't see why consumers would pass it right on by, any more so than if it were to be called any other name (Revolution, Mariobox, Carmen Electra Vag Simulator, etc) as long as they associate themselves with the name through marketing. They'd do that for any console name. Wii will just be another name that consumers will come to know...and that said, again, I think it's a cool choice considering the visual appeal it can have along with the simplicity of it. The recognition will come.

Well, Sony now offically owns the only console name this coming generation that makes any sense. We h ave the Microsoft "Right back around to where we started" and the Nintendo "Urine-Joke Machine"
That being said, it's something that people are going to remember. Grandma will probably ask, "Oh, is that the thing with the two i's I saw in Time?" And that, my friends, is what Nintendo cares about.
However, I just got the news about 10 minutes ago, and the unending stream of terrible puns and useless jokes are starting to hurt me...

This may actually work in Nintendo's favor. EVERYONE is talking about Nintendo's new system now. You've got this flurry of activity right now, and then E3 in a month so Nintendo may actually have a lot more name recognition this time around... and yeah, it's a lot differentiated than Playstation or Xbox so old people might catch on too.

ZOMG SO MUCH DEPTH.

You've got this flurry of activity right now, and then E3 in a month so Nintendo may actually have a lot more name recognition this time around... and yeah, it's a lot differentiated than Playstation or Xbox so old people might catch on too.
And THAT, I suspect, is the point.
I'll admit, I wasn't enthused about "Wii" at first (though if I can play with a fucking "Wonder-swan," I can sure as hell play with a "Wii"). But after a very informal poll, I was amazed at how many non-gaming co-workers first reacted to the name with: "Sounds cute."
So no, if you're the kind of person who picks your next-gen console based on the number of games it has where you get to kill hookers, you're not going to like the name. But then, you probably weren't going to buy a Nintendo console anyway.
If, on the other hand, you're a girl who probably doesn't game, or an oldster who finds these systems too off-putting or complicated ("What's a 360? A model number? Is that important?"), or even a middle-aged dude who just doesn't give a shit what some twelve-year-old on the internet thinks ... then yes, the Wii might be the name that reaches out and grabs you.
Hey, I would have prefered the previously-posted "Cockdragon," but then, I already game. Nintendo has repeatedly said that it's going to be more inclusive, rather than catering to the tastes of the people who already buy the competitor's systems, and that's just what it's doing.

I kind of like the name; it makes me laugh. I like that since it uses 2 i's I keep thinking it's pronounced "WEE" with 2 long E sounds (which translated literally in japanese, is what it would be).
Of course, if you hadn't read the article you might think it was pronounced "WHYYYYYYY!!!" The Nintendo Vice-President had a good point about yahoo and google. Once people get used to the name and hear it enough it won't matter anymore.

I have no problem with the idea of Nintendo WE, its the spelling of Wii that worries me. Clearly everyone is going to make Weeeee and Wee Wee jokes and that doesn't really help Nintendo's image any. The concept of WE being all part of the gaming experience and WE being actively involved in the games more is actually quite good.
I never thought the name Revolution would stick. I liked it, but just seemed too extreme for Nintendo. They might be trying to adult it up a bit, but a Revolution doesn't really sound good for the kids. Especially in the political climate that exists today. Parents might not dig that.

This whole thread is a joke. Does the name of the console really change what it can do or will do? Many people were hyping this system just 24 hrs ago. Now they are pissing all over it because it has a name that they don't like or understand. I'm convinced that people just need something to complain about or their lives would not be complete. It is what it is. Live with it.

Hence the name "Wii."
In all seriousness though, I think most people in this thread just think the name is stupid, but are still planning to buy the system. There's a few idiots who think that everything is different now, but the vast majority of people are just having a good time making fun of a dumb name while still planning to support the product.

As I stated before, I don't like the name Wii because 'Revolution' sounded a lot better. Just think of the marketing that couldn't have been used with that name! It worked so well on so many different levels that 'Revolution' was perfect. I still plan on getting a Wii (hee-hee) in the future, I just prefer 'Revolution'.

04-27-2006, 08:23 PM
Okay, everyone understands that other consoles have had lame names and that Yahoo and iPod were "weird" names, too. (Revolution would've been the first console name I actually thought was cool.) The problem here, unlike with those other names, is that this name has the potential to make people feel stupid when they say it or ask about it. Wii (har, har) will all get over it and get used to it and enjoy the games, but the non-gamers are the ones who care more about what's cool and shit like that. If you want to reach out to the dumbasses who were too embarassed to play their GBA in public or whatever, calling your console "wee" is a pretty fucking dumb.
I know the pee/penis jokes are juvenile, but non-gamers who hear about it for the first time later on will have the same first reaction we all had. Also, it will always be kind of weird when used in certain situations like "I got a Wii, dude!" "Man, I'm gonna go home and play my Wii." Yeah, it's dumb, but it's the truth. I like how the logo looks and that they were going for something different, but would it really have been that difficult to avoid a name with a negative double meaning?
Nintendo sure doesn't make it easy on their fans, do they? Yech. Actually, that's a better name for it. The Nintendo Yech.

Just wow. I'm sure this was pushed by Corporate in Japan who think it's a fantastic name <for the Japanese market>, but I'm sure NOA will welcome as much buzz as they can get over the system--especially free publicity going into E3 where they're supposed to let go with all the vagaries and secrecy on the next gen and more.

It can do other things, believe it or not. One of them happens to be playing new games! NO WAI! Or maybe it is a reference to Pangya Golf? That is one game, and the contol on the PC will be different. AKA, it is not a port. Sorry to bash the 360, but I need an example. Guess what! Call of Duty 2, Condemned, Oblivion, GRAW, and many other 360 games can be found on the PC but with the same feel/controls! And if you're really into getting free things, you can always get them for free off the internet. Unfortunately for companies, PC games are easy to find on the internet.

Because everything of any importance is told before E3. It's been the way of the world for years, sadly. Those fun video packages and items "unveiled" are shown off days before E3 to press with the floor showing the next week/later that week.

ROMs? Besides those being illegal, that is only one of the Wii's selling points.
If the word "Revolution" were to be dropped from most internet sites, I could digest this much easier.
Wow, what a post. Again, my comment was directed towards someone who said SPECIFICALLY, that he wanted the Revolution to play SNES and Genesis games. If he said he wanted it to play those games AND Revolution games, I wouldn't have said anything, since he would be buying a NEXT GENERATION system to play NEXT GENERATION games. And that 360 debate is so tired. I have a PC, so that means I can play GRAW, Condemned, and COD2, and not notice a difference? Funny, my PC can't even play 2 year old baseball games! With a 360, I don't need to dick around for hours configuring video cards, drivers, screen resolutions, etc. etc. I have always hated that "It's on the PC too!" debate, I prefer my gaming to be pain-in-the-ass free.
And ROMs, illegal? Yawn. When was the last time someone went to jail for downloading a copy of Pocky and Rocky?

considering this name will become rather commonplace in the coming weeks, or the coming months to non-gamers just hearing about it through the media, I'm totally confident that any sort of negative connotation of the term will die out COMPLETELY.
That's what I'm hoping will happen.
Anyway, I officially like the new name. I just talked to a couple people about it on the phone, and I think actually talking about it and saying it helped me get used to it a little bit more. So yeah, I think it's cool. Whether it's the best name from a marketing standpoint is a different question, but since I recieve no share of Nintendo's profits, I don't fucking care about that.

As I've said before, there is no real problem here.
1) No gamer is going to turn down fun because of a non-sensical name. I'll tell you right now that you are not a gamer if you think so.
2) For everyone else, the non-gamers, we never had them anyway, regardless of names, graphics, games. Nowhere to go but up.
But hey, think of all the innovative naming schemes:
Castlevania: Wind of Incandescant Illumination
Advance Wars: War of Ignited Irritation
Ice Climbers: Wicked Ill Ice
Warioware: Wario's Impure Impulses

I havent read through the whole thread but heres my opinion. I don't like the name. I really like Revolution and it was around for so long (longer than Dolphin and other code names before it) that it stuck. I think Nintendo shyed away from that because of what the worth meant. The new name is a risk and I think another mistake to chalk up for Nintendo. But also I really can care less about the system name if the system itself is good. I mean I own a system called Playstation. So a name is only a name. I dont think this helps them out on the people who think Nintendo is kiddie and what not. I really doubt they will change it but oh well.

I was at work when I found this out, and now the thread is too long to read, I'm sure I can guess what most of it is.
Anyway, the Nintendo rep came in and told me the name, we had a good laugh but both agreed that we would still be buying it. Which I think most people will end up doing, I doubt many people will not buy it for the name, anyone who does is a moron.
Anyway, the rep also said that some of the revolution games are going to blow us away at e3, as in big suprises games that nobody is expecting... soooo sounds good to me.
I want Wii.

To me, the name would only be "kiddy" to people who were thinking like a child.
To an adult, "Wii" has no meaning. Nintendo's marketing will give it one.
If you're thinking "wee wee" or "piss", then you have the mind of a child, imho.
This could work just as well as eBay's "it" ad campaign, people just need a definition of what "Wii" represents, to allow them to form an idea of what it could mean to them.
The console looks slick, and more sophisticated than the others, imho.. So the name could turn into somewhat of a indication that the console is a secret that people will want in on.. just so they can say that they understand it.
Maybe I'm a little too optimistic, given Nintendo's previous marketing trackrecord, but I definitely think there is potential in a quirky name like this.

But were the people who thought Nintendo was kiddie really gonna buy it anyway? Nintendo probably got rid of Revolution because the name may have been a little too "hardcore" for the parents and girlfriends and whoever else they wanted to reach out to. The Nintendo fanboys will buy it no matter what it's called, so this is probably their way of being accessible to the other people they wanted to reach out to. The "Nitedn0 is kidy wee wee!" people are irrelevant since they'll be the people dropping $500 for a PS3 or 360 because those are "bad ass" and "cool." Really, after the initial shock and flood of toilet-humor graphics wore off, I think the name is pretty cool.

I don't like the name, but I think it is part of Nintendo's blue ocean strategy. The gaming industry, with a few exceptions, is pretty stagnant. It's all sequels, FPSes, polycount, normal mapping bullshit. Most games that are out right now are just shinier versions of last year's cookie cutter crap. That sits just fine with the average gamer - they eat up Madden and Rainbow Six like Louis Anderson at Golden Corral.
Nintendo is trying to do something completely different. They are trying to bring back the fun in gaming. They are trying to reach a demographic that isn't interested only in visual bling. They are doing that now with the DS which people wrote off as a gimmick because of the dual screens. Well guess what? That ugly brick with the touchscreen is doing quite well, thank you, and stomping Sony's sexy portable all to hell in Japan.
If someone is willing to pass on a console because of the name, that is someone that Nintendo is not interested in. I only see the "macho" or "hardcore" gamers really complaining, and Nintendo could give shit one about them. They know they'll be content to play on their 360s and PS3s while a whole new category of gamers try out "the little system with the remote."
Nintendo may completely fail in this endeavour. It is a bold move to release a system so different from the others and with a name so...unique. They've got my support - it's refreshing to see something new being tried for the first time in a long time.

Always wise to pre-order something you know nothing about. I think I'm gonna go put down $50 on the Xbox 720 as well.
Tell that to anyone who preordered the Xbox 360, which didn't have a launch lineup finalized until about a month before its release. Hell, it's hardware wasn't set in stone until the July or August before (maybe a bit earlier, but I know devs didn't get final kits until approx. Sept.-Oct.)
Revolution, nay, Wii will have it's launch lineup fleshed out in two weeks. Aside from that, the highest estimate on price puts it over $100 cheaper than the 360 is or the PS3 ever could be, and we know it's going to launch at or around Thanksgiving. We also have been hearing since TGS last September that most developers cream their pants when they even think about the controller. I think a preorder after the E3 announcement, when I assume that stores like EB will begin taking orders, is a fairly safe bet.

What are the chances that he gets a Wii and only plays retro games? Unless he specifically said that he ONLY wants to play retro games, would you have a point. That would be like buying a high end gaming PC to play Solitaire. I doubt this person is stupid.
Believe it or not, having a game on PC and another console counts as a multi-release. You can change it to fit with your situation, but it doesn't change the facts. Those games can be played with two different machines.
Last time I checked, not being prosecuted for a crime doesn't make it legal.

Yeah, tons of gamers can, will and have been making fun of it. However the marketing logic is good. Revolution is one of those things that really sounds kind of generic and could apply to anything or any product.

As I posted on Digitpress:
The difference between an Ipod or Amazon.com is that Wii has alternate meanings when you pronounce it. It doesn't just sound bad, but it means piss, penis, and tiny. Look, we're all going to buy it because of the games. That's us though. We know it's about the games.
What of the mainstream crowd Nintendo is trying to pull in? You know, the people that DON'T play games? Say someone is working in an office and in a casual conversation, they say "Hey, wanna come over tonight and play my Wii?"
Awkward? Believe it. Maybe Ipod sounded bad. Maybe Dreamcast sounded terrible. Maybe Xbox 360 doesn't roll off the toungue. The difference here is meaning, and the first things in my mind were the three alternate meanings, long before I grasped the whole "togetherness" aspect.
You can't sell a console named Wii to a soccer mom no matter how used to it we get. From a marketing perspective, it's a mess.
Dr Mario Kart
04-28-2006, 03:01 AM
that may be(it technically has yet to be seen, because it hasnt been tried, regardless of how insane it is), but you cant sell or havent been able to sell, ps1/2, xbox1/360 to those same people with any known marketing techniques anyway, so that leaves us basically at the same starting point, since gamers will buy the Wii anyway, regardless of being a little pissed off.

In all honesty, a lot of time and effort has been spent on the Revolution name. "Nintendo Revolution" already has brand awareness. They probably should have stuck with that, at least for the US market.
Might have a situation like Sega where nobody at NCL listens to NOA. Somebody at NOA had to have thought this was a bad idea, if they even heard about it before we did.

Yeah, so...I'm not sure what to think.
On the one hand, the comparison to words like "iPod," "Yahoo," etc. is a fair one. Also, from what I understand, "ii" (or something to that effect) means "good" in Japanese, so it makes sense there.
On the other hand...it's call "Wii". iPod and Yahoo were pioneering new things; let's not kid ourselves, Nintendo's new system is going to do all sorts of great new things, but it's still a videogame machine, and the name is a little too out there for that.
I'm sure we'll get to a point where it sounds fine, and this does nothing to diminish my excitement for the system...but still, it's probably one of the worst names I've ever heard.

I think we are all being hosed...no pun intended. Let's think about this scenario:
They come up with the name 'Revolution' because they are taking a different approach to this generation than Microsoft and Sony. All along we are meant to believe that games should be less focused on the bells and whistles of technology and more about being fun. Any consumer should be able to pick up a controller and play. The focus should be on the games.
Then 3 weeks before E3 someone comes up with the idea "Hey, let's come up with the most obnoxious name we can. One that everyone will hate" Wii. We will solicit feedback from IGN, Gamespot, Cnn, CAG (ok maybe not CAG but who knows). They create such fervor about how the name is SUXORS, how can Nintendo F over the consumer...whatever other negative publicity they can come up with.
Then at E3, a surprise announcement from ReggiE3 (thanks Botticus) that "Nintendo has heard from the fans, and Nintendo is all about the Fans, Sony and Microsoft are about HDTV and Nintendo cares...blah, blah, blah." They decide to rename Wii...The Revolution! Revolution...They have come full circle...Cue applause, cue the PR department about beholding the awesomeness that is Nintendo!! Nintendo changes the name based on the public opinion...that we matter! We all flood the boards about how all our petitions worked and the actually listened to us! Then we hit all the stores to pre-order the Revolutuion!!!
Reggie is a genius!!!
OK, I spent enough time on this...gotta get back to Oblivion!

Nintendo wants to get the fanbase they lost to Sony back. That would be about 20-30 year olds. Naming the console Wii in which no one will know how to pronounce it doesn't help. Then once they find out it's "We" they will laugh there asses off like the majority of the gaming world is doing now.

Our petitions will only have worked if it gets named the Reggie (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92325).

Actually you've missed their whole point, apparently. They want the fanbase that NO ONE HAS. They know that Sony fans will get the PS3, they know that MS fans will get the 360, and a lot of them will also get the Wii. But their main goal is to get the people who don't have any interest in spending $500+ to play games. The same people who are buying the DS in droves in Japan and here to a lesser degree. Whether this name will aid or hinder that goal, we don't know. But I stopped laughing at the name after a few hours. If people are still laughing at it a few months after hearing about it, then either they have problems, Nintendo has problems, or both.

4cr sounds off... of most note is Octorok's comment:
Nintendo Wii. Hmm… I like it. It seems Nintendo has hired some really good marketers this time around. The fact of the matter is this: Everyone can make as many PeePee jokes as they want, but that only further illustrates the brilliance of this name, and I’ll tell you why.
In the subconscious of the social collective-mind and community, any press, good or bad, is good for a new product brand. Why? Because the brand gets distributed to potential acceptors. The more people talk about and discuss your brand, the more widespread your product’s branding becomes, and the more effective the iconography will be. Good or bad, it doesn’t matter. The fact is that the more people ‘talk’ about it, the more people will ‘hear’ about it, and the more ‘distributed’ the brand becomes for potential acceptors. The name “Wii” is bound to evoke discussion and debate all over the Internet, and eventually in many other circles, and this is exactly what Nintendo wants: Widespread showcasing of the Brand to the greatest possible pool of brand-acceptance candidates. Now, to fail from this point on, Nintendo’s “Wii” brand would have to launch poorly and with lackluster reviews. If in fact “Wii” launches strong, the brand will be a homerun!

When I first saw the name, I didn't even think of the name being a euphomism for dicks or piss. It's Wii, not Wii Wii. How many people say "I'm gonna go play my PS2 PS2." The novelty of the name will wear off. Shoot, it already has, all these "Wii Wii" jokes are pretty stupid.

What of the mainstream crowd Nintendo is trying to pull in? You know, the people that DON'T play games? Say someone is working in an office and in a casual conversation, they say "Hey, wanna come over tonight and play my Wii?"
I'm not sure about everyone else, but when I invite someone over to play videogames, I typically ask "Do you want to play some games?"
Maybe some people say "Do you want to play some 360?" or "Do you want to play some PS2?" In that case, the person you are talking to already knows what game systems you have.
I remember one night my neighbor came over and saw me playing my DS. The conversion went something like this:
"What the hell is that?
"Nintendo DS"
"Nintendo wha?"
"DS. Dual screens? Nintendo's new handheld. The bottom screen is a touch screen."
"What? Really? What game is that?"
"Mario Kart"
"Cool. Can I try it out?"
Imagine that same scenario except someone comes over to your house to see you controlling a game with a controller that looks like a remote and is responding to the way you move it and hold it. How long do you think the name "Wii" will be relevant?
It definitely doesn't have the same natural feeling as saying PS2 or 360, but in time it will...or maybe we'll just say "Want to play some Nintendo?" ;)

The name killed Nintendo.com yesterday. Newsarama.com, PVP, Penny-Arcade and MANY other websites all have PAGES worth of talk back.
This is the second (major) time that Nintendo has dropped info on people and this time it seems to be even more noticed than the controller.
Imagine the amount of discussion during E3. As internet gaming fans we'll get an incredible amount of info to feed on. For the non-gamer I'm pretty sure Nintendo will be attacking the press with more than just a press release (Can't wait to see more Reggie and Kaplan on TV).

I came up with a better name in less than a day.
Nintendo wanted to have a name that would mean something everywhere. They wanted something with "i"s because it looks like a remote. Wanted something different and cool.
The Nintendo iVi
The "i"s are silent, so it's just V. V is 5 in Roman numbers, most everyone on Earth should know that. Plus going to a store and asking for a "V" sounds a lot better than asking for the "We".
So let's call call it the iVi, then maybe Nintendo will use it! It's not too late!

No... if people aren't impressed by Wii at E3, then the name will be irrelevant. It will lend itself to easier jokes about a crappy system, but that's about it. If people really like the system, then that's all there is to it. But everyone will WANT to see it to figure out why the hell it's named Wii, if nothing else.

I think the name is pretty irrelevant anyway. When people say "well, at least everyone is talking about Nintendo" its stupid because its E3 time - everyone will be talking about Nintendo ANYWAY, regardless of what the name is. Even as a non-fan I'm interested to see the Revolution/Wii/Whatever. You can't help but be interested when details of a new console are revealed regardless of how you feel about the company behind the console.

Damn dude. Wii.
Ive been chewing it over for the past day and it still hasnt sunk. I understand what they are trying to do in establishing a unique brand name like 'google' 'yahoo' or 'amazon' but those names have some hard consonants and strengh to them. Wii is just... wiik. The REVOLUTION was a name that made you want to flip over your table, punch someone in the face then get a triforce tatooed on your arm. They better have a damn solid marketing strategy to convince the American public that its legit, because with a name like Wii people will find it easier to shove it aside as a niche novelty item. I still have undying faith in the system, but I hope the rest of America dosent dismiss it as a joke. The Big N better have some savage shit to blow our minds with at E3 if they want to make up for this, which I expect they will.

If Nintendo has a good showing at E3, the other guys will be going wii, wii, wii, all the way home. har har

I think the following snippet (from a GI interview about the name change (http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200604/N06.0427.1154.38678.htm)) bears more importance on the success of the Wii than the name:
I would say 9:30 in the morning on Tuesday of E3 will be filled with surprises and I would just show up. Because there’s been a ton of speculation. Some of it’s right. Some of it’s not. We’d say that if that’s the only secret you’re expecting [that the nun chuck controller is also motion detecting] you’re going to be very surprised.
So it would appear that they've got more than one more trick left up their sleeves for E3, more reason they wanted to get the news about the name out of the way early.

I think the following snippet (from a GI interview about the name change (http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200604/N06.0427.1154.38678.htm)) bears more importance on the success of the Wii than the name:
So it would appear that they've got more than one more trick left up their sleeves for E3, more reason they wanted to get the news about the name out of the way early.
True, E3 is going to be a blast to follow. Can't wait to see what's up.
walking around town talking about your Wii is not cool. It sounds immature and childish
I just don't think people are going to be as hung up on Wii being the OMG PEE thing that a lot of people are doing now. Why would everyone not accept Wii as equaling "the new Nintendo console." That's what it is, that's what the name will mean. I can't help but assume that the "going Wii" jokes will die out within weeks, among most people. The name will stick...and once it does stick, that's when the benefits of having this name will be clearer (short, simple, different, makes a cool logo, etc).

Uhh, yeah. I'm not the one whinning about the maturity level in the thread.

That'd be gawd-awful hilarious if this all turned out to be some sort of massive prank. Talk about causing brand confusion - but it's certainly created a HUGE amount of press and there's more than enough time to firm everything up by launch.
And with regards to risking the ire of the general public, I doubt the name has gotten out to that point of causing too much heartburn.

I want to believe it's fake. I can't say for sure, but the lack of trademark, the lack of domains (nintendowii.com, wii.nintendo.com, etc.) leads me to believe that it just might be fake. Granted, I may be completely wrong, but this is a brilliant...
Oh, Nintendo.com still has a "Revolution" graphic at the top page...

If it DOES CHANGE, I dont see it as necessarily going back to Revolution. However, they cant exactly make name announcements at E3, because then we have another massive shock that takes focus away from games. If they're going to change the name again, they better do it, 10 minutes ago.
Will the explosion that happens during the moment of punkdom be smaller or larger than yesterday?

Ok, I'm throwing my hat in that Wii is fake. I eat humble pie if I'm wrong. I don't think that Revolution will be the final name either, but Wii is NOT going to be on the box when I buy my system this Autumn.

I'll go ahead and side with it being fake, but only because I love conspiracy theories, I dont actually care if it changes or not.
If the keep it Revolution, then I dont think they can sell it under that name in say, China.

NintendoWii.com was registered by NoA, yesterday! It seems a little odd to me that they would risk someone else snatching the domain up before them, you would think they would register it weeks before the announcement.
Another interesting thing is that... they only registered the domain name until 2008, where as Nintendo.com is registered until 2014.

i love how a particular sect of gamers believes that anything nintendo does is brilliant...
first, the damage control and explanations why Wii makes so much sense and how it's "brilliant"
then it's, OMGZ Wii is fake!! most brilliant marketing idea in history.
REALITY:
if wii is real: it's a retarded name
if wii isn't real: nintendo is fucking with people and has to resort to deceitful marketing blitz to get its console attention.
the only thing nintendo seems to be consistently "brilliant" at is brainwashing people.

Ha, now that would be hilarious. I bet the reaction (from us, the random gamers interested in this) would be pretty positive. For those who hated the name, they'd probably let out something of a sigh of relief and love how hilarious of a trick that'd be. For those who like the name, I think we'd all just enjoy the fact that Nintendo managed to absolutely HOOK us. Hopefully the new name would be as cool.
Anyway, that whole theory is a bit too far-fetched for me (the explanation of the name just makes too much since - the whole thing has not been silly enough for me to believe it's just a joke, in fact, it really has not been silly at all), but it'd be cool.

Deceitful marketing... like the ps2 delivering toy story quality graphics? The ps3 creating the (dramatic reverb) 4TH DIMENSION? The xbox 360 having a normal 3-5% consumer electronics failure rate?! Well, I guess that wasn't technically marketing. If this was all a ruse, it would be some of the most successful guerilla marketing ever. That being said, the name is awful.

Is it sad that I'm not nearly as pumped about the Rev now as before this announcement? The Revolution sounded fast, cutting-edge, and well, revolutionary. Wii sounds like a fictional japanese fisher price toy they would have on South Park as a long-running joke.

If a stupid name affects sales negatively, fewer games will be made. This may be bad for you and me, despite our purchase of the system being unaffected. Or I could just be talking out my ass. Good sir, you be the judge!

yup image matters. look at the gamecube. when it was launched it was purple, had a handle, was small and had a lot of safe "kiddie" games. Even though it was more powerful then PS2 and was the easiest console to develop for, the cube was left with a third place finish in this console war (by most accounts). Revolution was such a good name, or even N5... Wii??? As good old Stone Cold would say WHAT?!?!

Ok, image matters. Look at the system , look at the logo and look at the controller. All 3 things have gotten people talking.
System - VERY nice design. Looks like a very expensive piece of hardware.
Logo - To the point. "Cute". Destinctive. Animated :)
Controller - Simple. Elegant. Retro yet futuristic.
Try and say "Wii" as a name. We. Dont use a questionable conotation when said, use it the same way you'd say "Yahoo", "iPod" or "Audi"...as a noun.
"I'd like to get a We game please" as long as you arnt talking like a fucking leprachaun, you should be fine.

Nicely said. I'd say Nintendo is playing its cards very right, thus far.
I didn't realize that MS or Sony were getting op-eds written about them in a lot of major publications since yesterday. But I could be missing something. Nor did I see any 400+ post threads in the Sony or MS boards recently.
MS isn't releasing details on a new console at E3 are they? Their biggest news is going to be Halo 3, which is great, but isn't as BIG as new consoles.
Sony will have PLENTY of articles and 400+ post threads written when they give the details of the PS3 at E3.
Like I said - Nintendo was going to get attention ANYWAY, they're showing everything really for the first time (I don't count them showing the casing at last year's E3 - that answered no questions). This whole name thing isn't really bringing them any more attention than they would've gotten, its just bringing it early.
