But I DO plan to talk like a leprechaun.
All the time.
And daroga, fear not! For I shall sell them to you at inflated prices! It's the lephrechaun way! A ho ho ho!
How else do you think leprechauns end up with that hefty pot o' gold?

Just watched the little Wii video again... and I noticed the i shooting and dodging rolls into ball...JUST LIKE SAMUS.
...
Sometimes I wish I did drugs to explain the random crap in my head
So, my brother, who was interested in the REV and has bought every Nintendo system near launch has just said he is NOT going to buy a Wii. Several of my friends are also pissed. Not to mention I explained it to my mom(she's 60 and one of the demographics Nintendo is trying to reach), and even she said it was stupid. Congrats on fucking up, Nintendo.
Didn't think I'd ever say this, but Nintendo has shown that they really are a loser company. I could tolerate Gamecube, but this is too far.

Ok, I'm throwing my hat in that Wii is fake. I eat humble pie if I'm wrong. I don't think that Revolution will be the final name either, but Wii is NOT going to be on the box when I buy my system this Autumn.
So you are gonig to buy a lot of whiteout?

Wow I didn't know that changing the systems name would change everything else about the console enough to piss people off and make them not buy it.

Obviously you underestimate the stupidity of people. I suggest you watch at least one Bush speech a day so you can learn. :-P

The stupidity of people not buying a system because of the name or the company that named it such an obscure name so people won't buy it??

The first one. It's a pretty stupid name, IMO, and Nintendo could've gone with something better, but it's just wii, it's not a big deal, it doesn't even have a definition. It's not named the Nintendo "Whoever buys this is a cockgobbler."
It's infinitely more stupid to not buy something simply because of the name.

True - having slept on it for two nights, the name Wii and Revolution are interchangeable. Still prefer Revolution but at least saying Wii doesn't make me go

I hope that doesn't mean you're thinking of still BUYING this thing. Comeon, the name sucks! It's all about the name!!!
Oh wait... could it be about the games? Nah. Wii blows.

So I brought up this revolutionary (ha) new name for the Nintendo at work today.
"You guys hear the new ghey name for the Revolution?"
"Nope."
"Wii."
"We what?"
"No, that's the name."
"What is?"
"Wii."
"We? As in people plural?"
"Yeah, that's the one."
"Noone's going to respect that name. They should have the slogan 'Wii...coming soon...no, wait, not like that, you *!@#$ing perverts.'"
Laughing ensued. Poor Nintendo. If they decide to etch "Wii" into the entire side of that console, I'd like a insert/sticky decal made to put over it with a logo of Reggie, please.

"Have you heard about Nintendos new console?"
"No, whats it called?"
"Spelled W-i-i, It's pronounced as "We". It should be the equivalent of a DS on your TV"
"Sounds cool" Explanation of controller ensues. I've done that ywice at work so far.
If you go in trying to get a negative answer,
you'll get one. If you talk like its something normal, oddly, people dont think its too fucking stupid.
Oops! I did it again.

Yup...that's pretty much how it's been when I've brought it up to people. Asked if they heard the new name of the Nintendo console, they said Revolution, I said it's called Wii, spelled W I I. People usually think it's interesting or quirky...I have yet to hear any one I know start in with the "OMG Wii like WEE WEE?" stuff.

I overheard a funny conversation about it today b/t a guy and his girl...
"you heard the new name for the Revolution?"
"Nope...what is it?"
"they're calling it the Wii."
*silence ensued*
I thought it was cool...no knee jerk reaction, they just kinda contemplated it :)

... Oddly, I told my wife the name and she laughed.
I think I will probably wait to see how the system does during the first year or so, before buying one, just based on this naming decision.
Now, I don't /hate/ the name. However it makes me concerned about how... competent their marketing team is.
Which makes me worry that the games and system may not be presented in the most optimal fashion.
Which makes me worry that /buying/ the system may leave me with a console with few third party games I am interested in. *cough* Gamecube *cough*
I'm /not/ buying another Gamecube.

Exactly. If you preface it with "Did you here teh GAYZORZ!!1 name for Nintendo? The one that (please put your mind in 1st grade mode) sounds like pee?!?!? HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!11 WEEEEE!!! Wii." of course you're gonna get asinine feedback.
Luckily, the real world isn't anywhere near as stupid (at least on the surface) as the Internet and this name, should it be final, will do just fine.
Some time yesterday it finally just clicked in my mind. It's not that I think it's a great name, but I'm just SOOOO tired of the bathroom humor and people arguing about it that I think I finally accepted it. I'm still holding out hope that it's all a marketing joke, but no longer holding my breath. And no, being a grown man, I'll have no qualms about going to a store and asking for the Nintendo Wii. You know why? Cause it's going to have killer games, that's why. If you have issues with that, you need to seek some professional help. You obviously have issues they need to be worked through.
I'm /not/ buyin another Gamecube.
Just curious on what everyone's beef with the GC is. It has the biggest variety of killer titles of all 3 systems in my opinion (which is just that, my opinion, speaking from my taste in games, disagree is you want, it's all good :) ). If we get the same wide assortment of games on the Wii that the GC had, or hopefully more, all will be right with the world.

Everyone I know knew the Rev name, it worked great. Now they have this thing and people go "Have Nintendo lost their minds?" Even gaming companies are coming out and saying how lame a name that it.
I love this quote...
"It certainly has gotten a lot harder to evangelize the thing to casual and non-gamers. The story used to be the controllers and the virtual console. Now it's the bafflement over the name."
Before all the talk was about Nintendo cool new ways and what the VC would have. Now that Nintendo shoot themselves in the foot it's about a crazy ass name.

They've had people talking about the System and controller for a long time now. The same people making retarded wee-wee jokes are the same kind of people who have been "in" on the Wii's development since the beginning. When the public starts getting advertised to, and they see Mario/Zelda/Metroid/weird ass games along with the name "Wii" they will think of it as a system, not as a lame joke told over and over.
To me the name is still weird, but it doesnt change the fact that Nintendo's console will do some amazing things. To the average Joe (the ones that matter for once) Wii will only mean what they are told to think it will mean.

A lot is going to depend on how Nintendo advertises this thing. If they put out adds that just say "Wii" and then some phrase...it will get people talking.

Yeah beef with GC, from the lack of titles. What has the GC released over the last two years in quanitity compared to say, the XBox and PS2? The only killer ap they had was imho was Resident Evil 4, and then it was ported over to the PS2. I love RE4, it was one of the best games ever released this gen, but that doesn't stop my train of though that the Gamecube had little to no support over the last two years. Nintendo could have pulled the plug on the Cube and I wouldn't have noticed. I look forward to the Wii because the control scheme is something new and the titles are bound to be sweet, but after the lack of third party support for the Cube I'm not holding my breath for the system to top the 360 in sales support in the US.

So you're saying you work at Hot Topic?
If I tried to broach the subject with my coworkers in the adult world, the conversation would go something like this:
Me: Did you hear about the new name for the Revolution?
Coworker: A revolution? In what country? I think I heard something about that on Morning Edition as I was driving in.
Me: No, no. The Revolution. Like the video game console.
Coworker: I'm sorry. I'm not following you. You did say "revolution," right?
Me: Yes. The new console. From Nintendo.
Coworker: What's a "Nintendo?"
So you see...

Just to move one step closer to debunking any of this "It's a fake name" crap, the trademark showed up today, registered on April 27th, with a priority filing date of 11/11/05, meaning they decided on the name at that point.
