View Full Version : Any Wikipedia addicts out there?

I admit to being a fully fledged Wikipedia freak. Not only can you get lost for hours just clicking on links from one page to the next, but it's fun to edit a page when you see it's missing crucial info. Anybody else love to do this?

I just love looking at random articles. I learn more on there than I do at school (senior year of hs).

Yeah, i've noticed that I have a new-found addiction to wikipedia. I used to never use it all until I noticed how useful its been in finding out important info. Then it escalated. I'm not constantly using it for each inquiry I have about anything.
I use it for enrichment studies, much like I use imdb.com for film knowledge... but not as often as I use imdb.com.

There's some kid in my astrophysics class that comes to class every day but doesn't pay attention. All he does is read random wikipedia articles about the most random things... Ever since the beginning of the semester I've slowly progressed my seating closer and closer to him. Now I sit right behind him.... I feel so bad, I allow myself to get distracted from the lectures by reading the wikipedia article's that he's reading :(

Put me down as addicted to Wikipedia and CAG.

Not addicted, but I do edit the occasional article. I was also a strong advocate for the non-deletion of the article on McMahonism.

They took that down? I remember watching that RAW and seeing the article for McMahonism about two hours later.

Nope, it's still there. Some of the people who want it deleted amuse me, personally.

I'm addicted, and I hate when articles are vandalized. It's not the reverting to the original article that gets me since that takes literally two seconds, but the thought of someone stumbling on an article missing key information infuriates me.
Am I weird? :)

I have been addicted for several years now. I love the fact that you can look up "Wilkes-Barre" and about an hour later, end up on "smegma".

lol for the past month I have been on that site. I like it so much that I go to it every time I want to look up something about anything. Too bad this site is not listed on there :(

I try to read wikipedia now and then, but the writing style of many of the articles frustrates me to no end.
I've found Howstuffworks.com to be a much more enjoyable way to waste hours of my time.

I use it for ALL of my research papers.
By the way, how the hell do you cite it in MLA and APA formats?
I just put "anonymous" for author and etitor and stuff.

I always use it for school and I like to go on there and read articles about bands it's like behind the music.

If you're being serious, you don't. You should cite the original source, which, in theory, should be cited in order to prove the verifiability of information on the Wiki. You really shouldn't use Wikipedia as a source since well... anyone can say whatever they want, with the possibility of misinformation not being noticed.

Every now and then I'll be looking up something on Wikipedia and next thing you know, a couple hours later I'll still be looking stuff up. Heh.

You really shouldn't cite Wikipedia as an authoritative source. Cite what they cite or find the information you're trying to cite from another source.

genocidal and dafoomie are right...while wiki is fun to read and can be informative, you should be skeptical about using any sources that allow anyone to edit the entries. you may as well cite the CAG boards in your research papers while you're at it.
Yaeh, I'm addicted to it. I'll just look up one pertinent article that I'm interested in or for my studies and then just be washed away and start clicking the links that come up and find more info. Once I was looking somthing up for an astronomy project and somehow managed to get into the realm of Xmen. It was kind of weird.

Yup. I only use Wikipedia for personal enrichment (I don't know about, oh, The Genocide of xxxx, so I look it up). However, I try not to use it as a source on an essay.

sometimes, if the entry has been well-edited, they'll cite their sources. if you are in luck, you'll get a peer reviewed source...it's one in a hundred, but still worth checking at the beginning of a project.

I love wikipedia. Best place to read up on every and any game....especially those plots you just don't get.
I find the talk pages to be sometimes even more entertaining that the main article
We do have a thread to link any interesting articles you come across:

It's really amazing how high quality most of the articles/pages are... I also am blown away at how thorough the site is, at such an infant stage! Can you imagine what it's going to be like 5, ten years from now??
I <3 Wikipedia.
I learned a lot about bears and Milli Vanilli on it.

I'm hooked on Wikipedia.
Yesterday, I discovered the featured pictures section:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Featured_pictures
There are some amazing pictures listed on that page. It's a great place to find desktop wallpaper.
There's also a page with a list of candidates to be added to the featured pictures section: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Featured_picture_candidates

Yeah, imdb & CAG are the two places I go immediately after checking my email. But, I have found myself on wiki, look at the clock and say to myself "Damn, I've been reading sh*t on here for three hours already".
