View Full Version : Enough about the damn name, Wii's final secret?

OK I think its time to close the book on shitty puns regarding Wii and start accepting the name and coping with it. It was fun while it lasted boys, but one more oh-so clever 'play with my wii' comment is going to make me puke. Personally I think we will all get used to it and possibly the name has a more significant meaning that will make more sense after all aspects of the Wii are revealed at e3.
On that note, I am sorry if this has been posted but it seems very interesting:
http://mozlapunk.web-log.nl/log/5681487
I know its kind of lame to speculate this close to e3, but dammit its fun. What do you guys think? I for one am not convinced of some mindblowing 3D projection device being the big secret (not that I dont wish it was), but you really can never put anything past the big N.
So whats the secret? Interviews have stated that once you play the Wii, the name makes perfect sense. Maybe the secret will give the name a greater significance? Thoughts..

I don't have to accept something I don't like. I can understand the getting tired of the jokes, but the quote "playing with my Wii," is something we're actually going to have to say, the only joke in that is the fact Nintendo really named it the "Wii."

Wow, thanks for the insight. Save the name hate for the other 1000 Wii threads on this board. This one is to discuss the possible unannounced features of the Wii and their possible relation to the consoles name. It helps to read the post before replying.

I doubt the new features will have anything to do with the name, I think the name is already covered by the wireless networking.
I'm really curious as well, but it mught be as simple as the secondary controller also having the frehand movement capability.
Quatli
04-29-2006, 10:22 PM
yea could be, but I hope not. The only reason I think the name might refer to a yet-unannounced feature is the emphasis on the ii, with the W having no pictoral or metaphorical meaning. I am probably just looking too deep into it, but its always a possibility. Also, what do you all think about that article? I think the recent Kodak Theatre = Mushroom Kingdom revelation adds a lot of credibility to the source.
"Think hard about the controller and what type of graphical presentation would suit it best! It’s so easy! Oh, and the controller is indeed meant to attract the casual gamer, because they'll so badly want to experience what they're seeing!"
What could he mean? A new type of graphical presentation? Well there is always the ever-mysterious little door below the disc slot...

I don't think the Mushroom Kingdom = Kodak Theatre thing is a reason to believe this guy. Kodak Theatre is also Yoshi's Island and Hyrule. Kodak theatre is split up into sections and only one section is Mushroom Kingdom. And I'm not sure if you know this, but an accelerometer has been confirmed to be in the nunchuck controller, and Nintendo said that was a very small secret compared to what they are going to show.

the wierd thing to me is the fact that Nintendo seemingly predicted such a negative outburst by revealing the name 10 days before e3. What company reveals a product name early to "let its fans vent"?? Nintendo like every company must have spent a lot of money consumer-testing the hell out of the name, so they obviously knew what was going to happen once they revealed it. The question remains: Why? If Nintendo wanted to emphasize simpicity, they would not choose a name that had to be explained to make sense. This leads me to believe that there is something else involved in the choice. Whatever it is, I am sure that Reggie will make me cream my jeans when all is announced May 9.
Never underestimate Nintendo.. There is definately more to Wii and we will just have to wait to find out.

I think we already know what the name means--it's right there in the video. Two "I"s equals two controllers. Wii equals We. Wii also looks similar to WiFi. I think we're going to see Nintendo make a huge push into co-op online games. Or maybe not. That's still not the "big secret," but then I haven't heard a thing that sounds likely to me. Some people were saying it was a microphone or camera in the remote, but neither would be exactly innovative since we have them now for systems.

That first link, well, it's always fun to read that stuff...just like it was a blast last year talking about the possible headset stuff. That said, it still seems too far fetched but really, I think Nintendo is going to give us something very exciting at E3. Usually when they feed some hype (as their reps have been doing over the past couple of days in interviews, talking about how surprised fans will be and whatnot), they deliver. This is going to be one of the most fun E3s to follow in a long time, I'd wager.

Interview with Matt Alwood: http://gameinformer.com/News/Story/200604/N06.0427.1154.38678.htm
It is only addressed in one question, so I'll copy and paste it also.
GI: It’s been rumored that the new big Revolution secret is the fact that the nun chuck controller is also motion detecting…
Atwood: Really. That’s interesting. I would say 9:30 in the morning on Tuesday of E3 will be filled with surprises and I would just show up. Because there’s been a ton of speculation. Some of it’s right. Some of it’s not. We’d say that if that’s the only secret you’re expecting you’re going to be very surprised.
I'm not even going to try and guess what the Wii's last secret is. As much as I try, I cannot think like Nintendo.

I don't think there is any final "big secret," I think Nintendo's going to show us some kick-ass games, but I severly doubt any of this virtual reality nonsense is going to be what Nintendo's offering. Speculation and hype is the greatest especially before E3... however if Nintendo pulls something like that out of the bag this year Sony and M$ are really going to be scrambling to make their consoles seem next-gen.
I agree it does seem a little weird and I'm not sure how well it would work but the future of gaming has always been pushing towards virtual reality. Something like that seems like a huge step into that direction.
I am anxious to see and hear Nintendo's big news. I'm just not sure it will be something that big.

What if it's not all out total immersion, but just the fact that the controller can take the form of the various tools used in the game? For example the video that shows the demo of the guy with the light saber, flower, and even an axe. Maybe they can do that with the Wii controller, it's not the most major thing ever, but it certainly would be cool to almost feel like you're swinging Link's sword in Zelda or like you have a knife and are chopping broccoli. Although this would begin problems with parents and their kids swinging make believe swords at their siblings or even pointing hologram guns at people. Either way I'll be at E3 and I'll get to play it before 99% of the world. Wii indeed!

Well they can't actually make you see those 3D images, they're not projections on the actual table in that demo, etc. That kind of technology is way beyond what anybody is capable of, the total immersion technology can simply add 3D objects to live video. It would be like a camera putting you on the screen and then the controller is represented on the screen as link's sword and is fully 3D and interactive.
Still cool, but I think people are mistaking those immersion demos as actually somehow projecting that 3D helicopter and those tanks onto the table, which they're not. They're simply added into the live video stream with their technology.

Well it wasn't a video of a screen, but the objects are added into the video feed. He, nor anybody in the audience could see those things (besides the screen they were playing the video feed on).
The breakthrough in that technology was that they could add 3D objects into live video feeds that would interact with what was in the video (like the terrain on the table).

No.
This is not merely green screening.
It's putting something into the video which interacts realistically with real world objects. I.e., render a car into a camera feed of your kitchen. When you drive it around, it actually recognizes AND hits the legs of chairs/tables/etc. It can navigate behind objects, detect depth/volume objects, etc. All without having to program it. The car just sort of knows.
That is absolutely new technology.
For example, your fat head is in your avatar. With this technology, when you put on the Naruto headdress and you run your hand across your real-live not-headdressed head. Yet, in the video, the hair actually reacts to your hand with real physics. It bends back and then springs into place. All without being programmed to do so. It just reacts.
//not to be taken offensively, but c'mon, that was goddamn funny

Different Drew Carey show (is that cancelled already?), but this was a video from 2004 and probably something cheaper or otherwise better than other versions of it.
Was the stuff in that show 3D? I remember it looking shitty, that's about it. The stuff in that demo seems way beyond that.

No I saw a episode the other day and it was in fact 3D much like the guy in this video. A actor had a stick that as I saw was turned into many things(ie: sword/hot dog/plant) No green screening, maybe green objecting? Yes Im pretty sure the show was canceled, it was funny the first few times I saw it but the actors laughed more then I ever did. Well unless you're a total idiot - and I have my doubts about several people on this site and in humanity in general - you'll probably say "I'm going to play (game title)" or "I'm going to play Nintendo" or "I'm going to play Revolution." I'm sure the number of people actually saying things like "I'll be playing with my Wii" will be staggeringly low.

It's the equivalent of going into the 360 forums and in every thread making a joke about the size of the 360 power supply.
To summarize: if a thread is about the name "Wii", then go ahead, continue to make fun of it. If it's a thread about something other than the name, it's unnecessary. Go to aforementioned thread about the name and make your jokes there.

If this thread was merely about speculation regarding the final secret then why did OP spend the entire first paragraph of his post telling everyone to quit making fun of the name? OP set the tone.
Well now you're just reading what you want to of the OP and ignoring the rest ;) My guess is he said that so people wouldn't continue making fun of the name in his new thread, which it seems has backfired on him; and at the time of his posting, just about every other thread was making fun of the name, so he needed to differentiate a bit.

Don't be surprised if they go this route..with the 3D projector and screen.

That would explain why we never see the television in the official Revo controller trailer. Maybe there is no television...

I don't get that. What would be the big deal about a system that projects an image onto a white screen? So what? Buy a projector.

Yeah, seeing images of it doesn't really do anything for me. If they talked about what it actually DID (other than shoot out lightning bolts), then I might be interested.

It helps to read the ENTIRE post before commenting on it... At the time I posted the only thing on these boards were 1000 iterations of the still unfunny 'play with my wii' line and I had to differenciate. I came here ready to regulate with some pimp slaps, I even got the baby powder out and everything, but it seems the thread is back on track.
Back to the matter at hand, I think that technology shown in the video is extremely cool but highly unlikely for the Wii. I just cant imagine it being practical whatsoever and the set up involved is exactly the opposite of the 'anyone can pick up and play' philosophy that Nintendo is going after.
The Futurna, while most likely fake, is more in the direction I was thinking. OK so its definately at the far end of the spectrum of possibility, but you really can't underestimate Nintendo and if they really do have some kind of 3D projection in store... Damn. Back to my origional idea, could the W or the name Wii as a whole somehow tie into this secret, if it is in fact 3D projection? The futurna picture features some kind of additional screen device with the controllers... is this the W? I dunno, you guys got any thoughts?

Just call it Nintendo. I'm playing Nintendo, if it bothers you that much. Don't get worked up over trolls or the thought of trolls. If the price is going to be sub $200 you would be a idiot NOT to buy a Wii, considering the franchises alone. I'm a tough critic of Nintendo but at least it seems they want to correct some of their mistakes this time around.

I did read the entire first post, the second post (the one I originally quoted), and beyond actually. If you don't want something discussed in a thread then don't mention it in the OP. Posting something ahead of time about "don't do _____", well you might as well just put up a sign asking for it. Its like the old analogy of telling someone not think about elephants. Now you're thinking about elephants... The easiest way to make something go away is to ignore it, not give it more attention by addressing it BEFORE someone even mentions it.

So, this could add a little fuel to the fire. If you look at the screenshots for the upcoming spongebob game you can see 2 guys holding sponge bob in their hand. Kind of like the video in this thread with the lightsaber and the hummer and all. What really adds to the speculation is the fact that the title of the screenshot specifically lists it as being a Wii screenshot. The description also says it will feature new gameplay elements.

Yeah, but clicking "Next" doesn't change the title from "WII" and the ad there says "PlayStation 2" and "GameCube". So I wouldn't count on holding Spongebob in your hands.

Holograms and projectors were the first thing I thought when thinking about the i's in Wii, but I doubt they can sell any system for a reasonable price that could do either of those well. Most consumers won't have the setup for a screen or clear space on a wall to project it, and I seriously doubt hologram technology has advanced enough to make fun games out of them at a sub-$400 price point.

The article kind of contradicts the fact that we've already seen screenshots of Ubisoft's new game, which goes to show we will NOT see games in way's we've never imagined since you know, that looked pretty much how anybody could imagine a lightgun-esque game.
well to play devils advocate here, keep in mind first party gamecube titles support progressive scan tv making them have very clear graphics to maybe the 'games on my living room table' bit is only first party at first
and ubisofts game is esentially a gamecube game wtih a spiffy controller?
i think its possible
that would be very cool, a company can develop using the on the table gaming
the moving control gaming
gamecube gaming
or EVEN old school gaming thru the virtual console......
lots of options

I personally think that this would be awesome. Right now a projector is a little too much for me too afford. So if there is some sort of projetion encorporated with the system I would be very very pleased. And if it could play DVDs also would be sweet. I guess we will see.
I love all of these rumors. I get excited each time a new one is proposed. But we have no idea if they are true. It is kinda funny. I am just picturing on Tuesday when they reveal the big surprise that it is a new mario Game. I am sure it wont be but there is so much hype surrounding the announcement it might be hard to live up to if it is not something like projection or VR.
I also could not see that Spongebob Picture. They must have taken it down. Interesting. 8-)

EVEN MORE fuel to the fire. The picture is up less than a day and then magically dissapears? I honestly can't think of a reason why the picture would disappear like that. Its even gone from the images section of the game's Wii page of gamespot...

I dunno, remember that one site linked on here that had a revolution logo on it? They pulled down that image and replaced it with plain text. I'm guessing too many people were making a big deal of the image so they pulled it, just like that revolution logo.

I think it might be the release date... Nintendo cant ship around the ps3 well I guess it could but I don't think that would be a smart move it would just be passed up for a PS3 by 98% of people. I doubt they would pull an Apple and say Hey you can get this starting tommorow but I would not be suprised at all for a Early q3 date..

Anyone want to bet a Wii system that that picture is not a in game screen shot or hologram? It's fun to speculate and think stuff u but come on! No way is there a projector that good inside or included with the Wii. If thats the case we should have a full on Holo-Deck ala star trek by the next generation hardware.

I just remebered a little rumor I had heard about 8 or 9 months ago.
It had something to do with a couple gyroscopes in the remote that would spin super fast and make the remote want to level itself out in midair creating a sort of force feedback making it feel as if you were actually manipulating something that isn't there.
Or in the case of a racing game the remote would be held nes style and you would turn it like a steering wheel and it would feel like it was trying to center itself like an actual wheel.

A good idea/rumor, but I heard that it would more or less be impossible to pull this off and still conserve battery life, given the amount of power it would take to successfully pull it off.
'Course, maybe Nintendo has figured out a fix for that.

Yeah that would be rough on battery life. But with lithium ion rechargable batteries you just put your remote on a charging cradle after playing and it's good to go on your next session.
Only problem then would be if you went on a marathon gaming session and the battery died midgame.
