View Full Version : man the PSP let me down big time..

finally got my first psp and was ready to play it..

took it out of the box.... am i the only one who thinks the slot that you put the memory card in can snap off very easy... its barly even hanging onto the system when you open it up...

the system doesnt have a REAL ON/ OFF SWITCH you got to hold the button up till the system turns on / off (what seems could break very easy)

the disc tray is spring loaded (again could break very easy)

i popped in PoPoLoCrois... took almost a 30 seconds to a min for the title screen to pop up and then again 30 seconds to a min after you hit new game... the loading times are freaking awful ......

i can pop in mario partners in time without a loading issue but on the PSP its loading after loading after loading (dont even get me starting on the WWE Psp game....)

lucky i got it at Best buy and you can return the system for a full refund within 30 days (even if opened) if not i got the 2 year warrenty on the system (what allows me to return it within 2 years- if something breaks or goes out)

overall i was waiting since thanksgiving to get a Psp cheap (best buy wouldnt price match the 199 vaule pack meijers was selling)

either i overhyped this system or maybe it will grow on me... BUT right now i will take my DS any day over the PSP...

every button on the PSP seems it could break very easy why the DS just seems like it would be a tougher system

also how well are those screen protectors... i got some intech for buck each will they damage the screen cause the PSP screen is insane to try to keep clean (dust free)

total price out of pocket with 2 year warrenty was 210 bucks + tax (or 222)

Ds system i think its worth the 150 nice made system
Psp System 200+ i dont think this system is even worth 99 bucks ..... glad i got the return policy... again maybe the system will grow on me but right now i hate it : (...... and i had high hopes for it

already own every USA RPG for the psp (i grabbed them all cheap before i got a psp, so i had something to play)

I can't even read that jumbled fragmented mess in the OP. All I see is that "Blah blah blah look all this stuff could possibly break blah blah load times on 1 game blah blah".

Yea, every system could possibly break, I could possibly push the stylus too hard onto the DS and it could break, or the hinge that holds it together could possibly break.

I can name about 15 PSP games that have little to no load times compared to your two (and WWE Smackdown is just a shitty shitty port). This thread reminds me of being back in March 2005.

And here's another thing: ELLIPSES DO NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF A PERIOD.

so the system is a firm piece of hardware.... i didnt like how that memory card thing seemed so loose everytime you opened it... again i only played it for around 1 hour so i can let the entire system power up...

and yes i complain alot about the newer RPG cause they are nothing more then clones of each other ....

there are a few games that i like but most of them i cant stand ... funny thing is the games i like others call junk...

Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Demon Seal---- love this game
Lunar for the Ds ----- again loved the game
Tales of Phantasia GBA loved the game
lost magic Ds ---- like the game

mostly i was saying for a 200 buck system it seems that it was very cheaply put together.....

also should i put a screen protector on the screen or not (will it damage the screen)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
haha, guess you shouldn't have bought all those games before you even got the system...i'm enjoying mine, too bad you don't enjoy yours

i dont worry about the games cause i know i can get 80-100% of the cash i paid for them back very easy.... picked up all the rpgs for around 13-15 each..... most would fetch that or higher on ebay even today...... hell i still got a Sealed Y's for the psp i paid 14 for

Oh snap!

Anyways, I love my PSP so far. No complaints yet. As for screen protectors, most people will agree that the HORI is the best. I have one on my PSP and it's almost invisible and takes some glare off. I got it through J&R Computers through Amazon.com for $7.

Don't blame the system for long load times; blame the developer. There are plenty of games that load just as quickly as any DS game.

I've never had any problem with the PSP durability, or lack thereof.

Who cares if the system doesn't have a "real" on/off switch? So you hold it down for a second longer than it takes to flip a switch. Is it really that big a deal?

I'm currently playing Legend of Heroes and am enjoying it more than any DS game I've played other than Castlevania: DoS or Mario Kart. I really think it is a tremendous game.

It's no secret that the PSP got off to a slow start, but it has definitely started to pick up steam and its outlook looks bright. It's going to get some really great games this year.

swetooth9
05-02-2006, 09:42 PM
oh yea, about the whole holding the power switch thing; that's just an improvement, nothing to complain about...to turn the system on, you just have to flick it up, just like you would with a GBA...to turn it off, you hold it up for a few seconds, if you flick it up, it will put it on sleep mode if you are on a little 3 minute break or something...dunno why you're complaining about a good feature, but to each his own...plus holding the power switch up for a few seconds verifies that you indeed want to turn your system all the way off just in case by accident you touch the switch, it puts it on sleep instead of shutting all the way off like a GBA or DS would

I agree with the OP on some of his points, I just can't get into gaming on the PSP, I've had it since day 1, but I've never really had a OMG fun gaming expericence on it. I remember bashing the DS for being gimcky and underpower, and praising Sony and the PSP, but now I'm feeling the total opposite.

I've had many, many hours of great gameplay on the DS, but with the PSP it's always a load time, or a bad control setup, or all the other little things here and there that add up to an overall bad expierience.

I dunno, it's not bad, but I wish it were better.

I don't see a problem with the memory stick slot being the way it is unless you have to open and close it constantly, even then mine isn't loose to the point where I'm afraid it will fall off.

And can somebody post the link to the video of Gripshift side to side with WWE SD vs RAW to compare the loading times? That was sad, yet hilarious.

I agree with you OP. The PSP is a very delicate piece of hardware. The D-Pad is pretty awful and the analog nub really loosens up over time. They did a good job of shrinking the playstation down but you can definitely tell where they skimped a bit. The DS although somewhat clunky looking ( I don't think so but most tend to think so) feels really solid in my hands. You can tell that through years of engineering they really know how to make a handheld that will hold up.

I think solid state media is also the way to go for a handheld. The UMD execution is pretty good but just like its bigger brother (PS2) the load times are quite annoying.

As for the games there are some good ones out there you just have to be very selective on what you buy. Check for the load times and the control issues.

I like my PSP but my DS sees way more play time. I might trade it in if nothing at E3 really excites me.

Actually it has more to do just with him being Slidecage actually. Personally, I look forward to every one of his posts to see just how badly the english language can be butchered.

He could post a thread saying every video game system is the best and it would probably end up like: "Every video game system good... I buy all and like" and I would, personally, still make fun of it not because of the message.

However I did buy one at launch and went through a period of about six months where I thought about selling it.

For the life of me, I cannot understand the gripes against the PSP. I absolutely love mine, and I play it all the time. My DS has been shelved in favor of the PSP. I don't feel that it is shoddily made, or that the games are crappy. Sure, there are quite a few ports, but I don't mind that. My favorite console games on-the-go? Yes please!

Also, the upcoming games list for the PSP is impressive, to say the least. I love mine. And I am not some Sony fanboy or anything like that. I just find it to be far superior to the DS.

I'll take your PoPoLoCrois slidecage, since I badly want that game.:)

Anyway, I completely disagree with everything you just said.

I was really wanting a PSP around launch, since there was around 8-10 games that interested me. Well, I didn't have the money, so I kind of held off on it. I thought about getting one around the Holiday season, but I got caught in the Mario Kart DS hype, so I ended up getting a DS. I did enjoy my DS, but I admit that I started to wonder whether I should have gotten a PSP first.

Well, since there were tons of appealing games I wanted released for PSP in 2006, is was killing me for not owning one. I found a used one, kept in excellent condition with box and everything with it, for a good price on an online forum at my college, so I decided to go with it. All I have to say is that I was very impressed with the PSP when I first got it and I'm still just as impressed, if not more, right now. I really love the features the PSP has to offer, such as playing games, listening to music (I don't have an iPod), internet browser (I don't have a laptop), so it's a terrific all in one device for me. I truly love the PSP's screen, which is probably better quality than any TV in my house. What really impressed me was the games. My first game was Wipeout Pure, which I got a Best Buy for $20. It blew me away when I first played it (I've been a big Wipeout fan for years) and I still love it just as much when I first got it. Loving it motivated me to buy 7 more PSP games, for a great price, and I ended up loving some of them just as much, while liking others more. Personally, I love the UMD despite the longer loading in some games. I just love the high quality cineams, anime sequences, etc., just like I see on a console. The sound system in the PSP makes it hard to believe I'm playing a handheld, since the quality is so good. Most of my handhelds, fail badly, because I find myself quickly losing interest in it while playing. With the PSP, I see myself playing it for a few hours, then wanting to play again later.

Basically from what I said, I'm extremely happy with the PSP and couldn't be happier. Although there's no denying I'm very big into many of the Playstation brand games, but the PSP turned out to be just what I wanted, and ended up exceeding my expectations. I always wanted a handheld that plays Playstation type games, and I definitely got it.

Talking about the PSP has made me want to buy more great games to play.

Oh yeah, as far as the usual problems I hear about PSP, here's what I have to say about them:
-Personally, I have no problems with the d-pad, since it feels just like the d-pad on a DS2 controller, which doesn't bother me at all (most of my 2-D fighters are for PS2)
-I feel the PSP is sturdy enough for me, but that's because I take very good care of my things. I have a screen protector for my PSP does not get scratched up.
-I don't have any problems ejecting a UMD.
-I like the power on/off switch waiting, because I don't accidently turn on/off my PSP, unlike the DS.
-I feel the buttons are responsive
-The analog nub might have felt weird at first, but I've learned to use it and glad it was put on a PSP.

Flame on, bitches.

This and many other gaming websites are over-run by Nintendo fanboys. There's nothing wrong with the PSP. I agree with everything you said about the PSP, except the part about it being far superior to the DS (cause I love my DS too. :D )

I agree, but my only complaint against the PSP is the price of the games. I don't believe handheld games of any kind should be anywhere near $40. That is just insane.

That is just insane.Well, PSP games are using a UMD format, which is quite different, so I kind of expect $40. Personally, I don't care about that for most games, since most of them are $40 quality, like Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, Ridge Racer, etc.

Yeah, I agree. Even the $34.99 DS games are too much. $29.99 should be the upper limit for all handheld games.

I agree with that, but only when handheld games were such a step down from the consoles. With the DS, and even further with the PSP, handheld games are actually starting to become on par with the home systems, and development costs must be higher, so I expect the higher price tag.

I mean, when I see a console game ported to a handheld, I expect something similar to what I get at home, and not a largely bastardized version.

AFAIK it has to be plugged in, maybe 100% would be enough tho.

No this is even FURTHER reason why they should not even go up in price but rather stay the same or even go down. Sure you can argue higher development cost but the negligible cost of UMD's when compared to the Flash Cart's of the DS makes this point mute to some extent.
