It looks like there are several versions not counting just Lunar 1 and 2.. specifically which one would you recommend that I get? (Actually, be curious to hear any opinions, good or bad, on the series).

Get the one for DS, I dare you. :D
Since you've never played them, get Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for the PS1. Then, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete. If you enjoy both (and you will) and are in need of more Lunar, you can always find a Sega CD and get both games for that system. Lunar Legend and Dragon Song weren't that great...

Agree with Rig. Get lunar SSSC for the PSX, enjoy it then try out Eternal Blue for the psx. the sega cd versions are good as well, but the PSX versions were a bit better. Dont go cheap and play the GBA lunar legend though, its basically a cut to hell version of silver star story. Dont go near dragon song, thats for sure.

What is the best Sega version (saturn or segacd?)

They never released a Saturn version of Lunar in the US, so unless you know Japanese and have access to Japanese Saturn games, you will have to get the Sega CD versions.

...Which are of considerably less quality compared to the PSX ones.

Well...yeah, which is why I said above to get the PSX versions. He asked which of the Sega ones he should get.

I understand, I was just emphasizing to him that he should get the PSX version.

Well I was going to try and get a ROM for the Sega CD one (since they don't sell it anymore and I don't feel like coughing up $150 to a collector on Ebizzle).
But now I'm hearing that the Playstation ones are much better? I'm trying to make a big decision here as I hear the games are very very long and I really doubt I'll play both. How much should I expect to pay for the PSX one?

Ah, I see. :D
And OP, the Lunar series ain't cheap. I'd scour ebay and see what you can find, as that's your best bet in finding a copy nowadays. (Or check the boards too.) I'm not exactly sure of their going rate anymore, because I haven't needed Lunar for a few years now. IIRC, Lunar 2 goes for a bit more than Lunar 1.

That's precisely why I was interested in checking out the SEGA CD version as an ISO, to see if I like the series before I jump in at $150!!! (Well, I wouldn't pay $150 for any game, I'm CAG, but you know what I mean).
Japanese RPG's are very touch and go with me. I still have DQ8 and Grandia 3 totally no where close to being finished.. probably will never finish them. I like the 2-d appeal of the Lunar series, although some of the songs I heard on various net jukeboxs sounding pretty wretched.

Hmmm...well, I can't say the opening song is the greatest, but I loved the music they had in-game. It was very catchy and memorable. And, Luna's boat song was pretty cool.

I have heard that music is quite good, in general. I've also heard the cutscenes are really well done. I like cutscenes if they propel the story and are used in a reward fashion.
however the sega cd has a much better battle system.

well seeing as all versions have totally ancient graphics, what is it the PS versions have that strikes (most of) you guys as outclassing the others? gameplay or story??
