According to PS3Updates anyway:
You've probably heard of (or experienced) the Xbox 360 madness when the console came out. There were no units available at all in many stores! So I guess the logical thing to do if you're after the much-anticipated Sony PS3 is to make sure your name's on the top of the pre-order list.
Too bad that's not going to happen any time soon.
Gamestop/EB Games will not be taking pre-orders for the next-gen console until October. So hold on to your money first and don't go all psycho just yet. It just might be worth waiting for the PS3; after all, you've been waiting for its release for what feels like forever. Or you could always consider buying a Wii instead...
The fact that they didn't site a source makes me kind of doubt this, but it's an interesting rumor to say the least.
I personally think they should allow more preorders than systems like with the 360, just so long as people know they won't be getting the system launch day but will get it ASAP. I mean, it's nice to know you'll atleast get one soon and not have to come in everyday to see if they got more in.
