All right guys,
Like Robert Hamburger, I'm pumped!:bouncy:
I've been a fan of Star Control since I rented the first one on my Genesis. Great game. Fast forward to the year 2000. My eBay addiction is running fierce at this time. I end up purchasing Star Control 2 for the only console available - the POS 3do. The 3do was about $40 shipped with two controllers but Star Control 2 was around $90 shipped.
Totally totally worth it. Better graphics! More fighters! We were matching every day. At one point we had about eight regular friends stopping by to get in on the fun. Not to be too Hordey;) but it was cool to have the "only copy in town". One time I remember coming home from work and two of our buds had let themselves in. While in the furious throes of melee and unable to turn his head one friend says, "I hope it's <dammit!> cool, we let <bastard!>ourselves in." How could I be mad - they had the fever.
To be honest, I'm afraid to say I never delved into the campaign mode, although I've heard great things about it. Alas, our 3do died in 2002 and the skies were silent.
I mentioned before, I'm pumped. Pumped because my housemate/fellow Star Control ][ addict friend has a 56" TV with 400 watts of sound. We're getting another 3do on eBay (don't bid against Coltyhuxx!) and playing this mutha on the BIG SCREEN!
So, let's hear it, favorite ships? Favorite versions? Stories? Tips/tricks?Thoughts on the 3rd Star Control? Enjoy the campaign?:D If nothing else, I hope this thread convinces ONE of you to go out and find this amazing game!
I used to love the Ur Quan: "Lalalalalalaunch fighters, laun, lalalalala laun laun launch launch fighters!" <hopefully some of you get this>

I never tried it, but isn't it free now for PC? It was released as the Ur Quan Masters or something; heard it was good.

I first heard about it in GameSpot's "Greatest Games of All Time" and downloaded the remake (Or PC port of the 3DO version) "The Ur-Quan Masters." It was great, I played it up until I beat the lengthy single-player campaign. The characters were interesting and humorous, they all had great voices, and the game was fun to play, even if there was a somewhat steep learning curb for battling. As for my favorite ship, the Utwig ship and its shield are excellent, especially against those annoying Mycons.

Star Control....The first TWELVE MEG GAME ON GENESIS. Take THAT, Strider, you little EIGHT MEG GAME.
Kind of funny to see that worked so heavily into the marketing campaigns. Everyone was going nuts for Strider's "8 MB of memory" probably not even knowing what it is.
Loved Star Control, never played the sequels. Downloading Ur-Quan Masters/SC2 is one of those things I always intend to do "someday."
Was the third one any good or no?

Star Control III, which was not made by the same team who did SC2 (Accolade wanted to make a quick buck by releasing a sequel quickly), is widely considered by fans to be the black sheep of the series. In fact, the fandom has even struck it from the continuity because it was so bad (And inconsistent with the storyline). There are plenty of reasons why the fans of the series hated it, some of which are listed at these sites:
WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!

I looked through the first web site's SC3 section, and I noticed one of the problems right away. Rather than using SC2's cartoonish graphics, the designers of SC3 chose to use animatronic puppets, and needless to say, all of the returning aliens look hideous, especially the Orz and Arilou. Also, the Mycon puppet looks cheaply done, as it's just pink, flower-shaped paper on a pedestal. And after reading through a synopsis of the story, I can see why the fandom kicked this game out of the timeline.

Hmmmm
I never did finish Star Control 2 on the 3DO. Might have to fire it up. Hope my 3DO still works.

Oh man, you guys, seriously, get the game. I can't believe not that many have played it. You'll love it, especially for the melee against a friend. It's the kind of game where matches take 10 seconds - 5 minutes and you could prattle on endlessly about strategy.
I was always intrigued, reading EGM and others back in the day, by the screenshots of the animatronic puppets used for SC 3.

Star Control 2 is the best game ever made. Period.
Pickup a copy for your PC (yes, it will run even on YOUR PC), get Dos Box and run it. It's an absolute trip.

Well the system is, usually, the less expensive part. There are, if I recall correctly, three different models and one suposedly really sucks and the drive dies regularly. I don't think they were built very well, as ours burned out (granted it was used) after a year of pretty tough play.
But, seriously, if you're sitting on that disc get THEE TO A 3dO!!

I have the panasonic flip top model. Always worked pretty well. I'll have to hook it up some time this week. Always hated the save space on it though. The 3DO did have a few gems on it, but not many.

Absolutely, you could do it in the first one as well. The "chomp"-ing sound when they attached to a ship was hilarious, the only game I remember from that era having "real" sounds (the other being Toejam & Earl). In fact, the "launch fighters" thing became such a point of amusement thanks to the sound that my friend dubbed it "launch the lunch" and I've referred to it by that name for about 15 years now.

I love flying the torch in super melee. That's the shit! You can take out almost all the big ships with just a little skill. The Earthling cruiser is cool because it seems like something humans would really build. It can kick a lot of ass with semi-reliable nuclear missles but it can't get out of it's own way.
Edit;
Friggin hate having to fight a juggler. His weapon kicks ass and needs no power.
Nothing more fun than sending a doggi after a juggler or a mauler, or having an avatar flying into the plasma exhaust of your torch and knowing he can't do shit to you. The ships are very well balanced for the most part in a paper rock scissors kind of way.
Also, it really sucks fighting the spathi with a Yehat Terminator. It just isn't quite fast enough and can't turn well enough to catch the basterds

Occasionally there are stalemates or "you are basically screwed" matchups.. but one of the things that can really make a game extra kickass, IMO, is when you can still pull some amazing moves out of your ace. I've used the little Spathi and (ok, ONCE) beat my friends Ur-Quan warship just by launching little pea shots at it and dodging Ur-Quan blasts that would kill me in one hit.

That's generally accepted as the best strategy to use with the Spathi ship, since it's quick, but its weapons have a pathetic strength. As such, you need to use guerilla tactics with the BUTT homing bomb. In fact, there's really no better way to beat the Dreadnaughts early in the single-player campaign.
