I know it's a ways off, but I'm pretty interested in this game. I may be one of the few who loves FPS games and prefers them on a console... TXB has a new trailer comprised entirely of footage from the 360 version of the game, and I honestly can't tell the difference between this and the PC trailer. I'm curious what kind of multiplayer options there will be. I'm keeping this on my list to watch for, anyway.

Excellent thread. I had my eye on Prey for quite some time. The graphics are definetly a plus, and it does seem be a decent Doom-like game. I just hope that the game isn't just a medium for the cheesy gimmick of being able to exit your body. That child getting murdered is just too shocking, to not be interested in this game.

I don't really follow PC titles much, but the "re-veiling" of this a little while back caught my eye. I was very happy to hear that it would be coming to 360. Xbox was definitely the console for FPS lovers, and 360 looks like it will follow in those foot steps. I'm already in love with the console with a launch that included PDZ, CoD2, and Condemned.
Now the wait for Prey, Halo3, and Gears of War...

New news and some mp teasers. This game sounded incredible before, no the multi-player is beginning to sound like it may prove as interesting as single player. Can not wait.

I strongly recommend any doubters of this title to pick up April's OXM. On the disc there is a short feature on the game and IMHO this could be up there with HALO and Half-Life. It looks great and brings some new innovative features. I wasn't really looking forward to this game, but I'm a little excited now.

that's what people say about every FPS before it comes out nowadays...then the game is always average.

New "super trailer" up on IGN. I really can't believe this game isn't getting more hype than it is. The level of detail in the videos, and the number of pretty innovative and creative features makes this game really exciting. All the video looks to me like they're gonna hit it out of the park too. I admit, my expectations are getting pretty high for this game. I'll probably end up dissappointed, but I can't wait to find out...

"Prey for June 22nd!
June 22nd is a date that an awful lot of gamers will be waiting for. On that day, the Prey Demo will be released.
Available that day on the PC as well as in the Xbox Live Marketplace will be a 5 level demo containing both single player and multiplayer modes of the game. The size of the demo, which levels, what time it is to be released has yet to be determined, but June 22nd is Prey Day - you're going to want to keep an eye out for that!"

Agreed this is going on my PC first.
I played the Multiplayer Demo at E3 and was even in a tournament but got my butt handed to me. Anyways I had lots of fun because you can shoot enemies on the ground while you are on the ceiling. Then you can warp through areas and pick up unique weapons. Overall I had a great time with Prey and the graphics are amazing in actual gameplay.
I saw the preview of Prey the first time at E3 2005 and thought this game is going to be great even though I wasn't into FPSs as much as I am now.

Ever since it was brought back from the grave (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6122678.html), Prey has been one of the most anticipated first-person shooters for the Xbox 360 and the PC. The console demo is slated to go up this Wednesday, June 21, on Xbox Live at 9 p.m. PDT (Thursday at midnight EDT/4 a.m. GMT/5 a.m. UK). According to codeveloper 3D Realms and publisher 2K Games, it will be a five-level demo that will show off both single-player and multiplayer modes of the game.

Fuck you MS. You really need to get your shit together.
I'm beginning to really dislike how the "announce-wait-certification-delay" process works...
from George Broussard at 3D-Realms, this afternoon:
"We do not want 360 people waiting up for the demo or having false expectations.
The 360 demo will not appear on Marketplace tonight.
I'm still waiting for specifcs, but I'm being told that it's still in testing at Microsoft. From what I understand this isn't Microsoft's fault, and is more likely just an issue of timing.
I'm hesitant to give any estimates for a release, but I've been told it should be reasonably soon after the pc release, but could be as long as a few days.
We will post an update as soon as we have more solid information."
So guess what kiddies, if it don't come tomorrow, you don't get it till monday, soonest.

Alright, I downloaded and played through a good chunk of the PC demo...
Hell yes. From what I've played, Prey definitely delivers. The first thing that's apparent in the demo is that it looks damn good. Essentially, think Quake IV, but with a lot more detail and much more creativity in the environments. The developers succeeded in creating a world that truly looks alien -- the art direction here is simply phenomenal and it definitely makes the game look a hell of a lot more interesting than your standard sci-fi FPS. The sound is well done -- I noticed a good use of the rear channels so for those of you who have surround sound, it will be utilized here. The voice acting was surprisingly good and the music was pretty moody and fit the scene well... it's more subtle music kind of like what FEAR had, but that really makes it work well. The other thing that's readily apparent is the emphasis on storyline and I really think that Prey takes the right approach to storytelling. The dialogue is well written and this is the first FPS I've played where there's a focus on the characters of the story. From the very start, the game feels a lot like a movie in how it unfolds and again, you can tell that the developers put a lot of thought into the storyline. I'm positive that the game's really going to have one hell of a story to tell in the full version of the game and it's nice to see a greater emphasis on storyline in a genre where story is typically secondary.
And of course, there's the actual combat. And it just... feels really good. The guns feel as though they really have some power behind them -- you take down enemies with a reasonable amount of shots rather than having to pump an obscene amount of lead into an enemy to kill them. That's good because that's one of the huge factors that made games like Quake IV and Halo feel really repetitive. In the sections I played, the areas where combat takes place were set up pretty well. Shootouts leave you with relatively limited room to work with so you have to be a little more strategic with your plan of attack -- circle strafing wasn't an option in the initial sections of the demo which was definitely a good sign. The areas where you weren't in combat were equally well done. There's a lot of creative touches pretty much everywhere that really help make the environments feel like they'd belong in an alien ship. Like with the graphics, the attention to detail in the gameplay is excellent so far.
Anyway, these are early impressions, but I'm definitely happy with what I played. If the demo was any indication, then I'd expect that Prey will live up to people's expectations... I personally can see this game ranking among games like FEAR and Far Cry in terms of quality which is saying a lot. Prey seems as though it avoids the trap of being another generic FPS and it feels like the game that Quake IV should've been in a lot of ways. So yeah, definitely check out the demo as soon as you can because this game has a hell of a lot of potential.
And some notes for the PC boys: The game is well optimized. I'm running a 7800GTX which I realize is high end, but the game ran at a constant 60FPS with everything maxed (AFAIK.)
Phew, time to sleep.

That was pretty fun. I like how when you die you have to fight spirits to get back alive. The guns aren't too great. They need a bigger bang.

I took these 3 screenshots while playing the demo. Epic!
**Minor Spoilers**
About halfway through the demo or so, you hit a switch and the entire room basically opens up:

And this is the same room, but upside down:

At one point in the game, you are spiritually transported to another realm. Looks alot like the Grand Canyon too:

I played through the PC Demo as well.
Like Chacrana said, the art direction is amazing. The ship is full of little details that really draw you in. They've also taken this idea to level design, with the ship full of gravity effects and portals that really make you feel like you're in this super-tech place. I never felt like I was running past "monster closets" or anything like that. The guns feel nice, and the grenades are very "Oddworld: Stranger"-esque.
It's well worth the 500mb d/l, and I hope the 360 demo comes out soon. It's very very cool.

I got really good speeds at Fileplanet (http://www.fileplanet.com/164821/160000/fileinfo/Prey-Demo) and they have a download manager because you have to wait in line for it but it comes down faster then what I got at Gamespot or Download.com. Another alternative if you don't have it yet.

My PC is my number 1 system and its loaded with the newest shit. I ran the prey demo at full on everything and MAN the game is not only gorgeous but amazingly fun. At first it seems really normal than you learn about your "spiritual" traits and it gets really cool. I'm totally digging it and i'll probably pick it up for 360 just cause of achievments. Even if your PC sucks still download it and turn down the settings, i ran it on a shitty system for the hell of it and it ran. At least you'll get an idea of the game.

I played the PC demo last night. Even though it ran kinda crappy, I did get a good feel of the game. It felt a bit too much like Quake 4 (which is bad IMO) but I didn't get to play it too long before I got fed up with the crappy framerate. So I'll wait until the 360 demo before I give judgement. The intro was pretty freakin' sweet though.

The best demo I can recall playing in some time. Interesting to say the least and I'll probably look to pick it up soon after release.
I would disagree wtih some comments above. The combat itself isn't all that great. It's decent, but it not anything that you haven't seen before. The first gun you actually get is pretty basic been there done that.
The art direction is ok, but the game is probably a bit too Quake IV looking altho they throw the Indian theme stuff in there. The animations and stuff didn't seem that great (not bad tho), but maybe it's a bit of a case of my machine not being that powerful.
What separates this game from just another fps are the gameplay twists.
Instead of dying you go out of body into the spirit world and eventually are suck back in-body to where you left off.
You also enter spirit mode to solve puzzles and kill enemies. You essentially become a ghost anytime you want to. Your powers are limited by your spiritual health.
The whole portal and perspective bag of tricks is quite interesting and fascinating too. You're walking on walls and ceilings and turning rooms upside down and sideways and walking thru portals to different parts of levels. It's confusing, but in a fun way.
And last the story telling is a slightly different take than what I've seen before in a first person shooter. Think HL2 except your character talks. It works well. And the game has an Indian theme to it besides the Quake IV stuff.
In the day age of getting alot of pretty yet run of the mill games, Prey dares to branch out in other directions as well. Interesting and promising demo.
SP rocks, MP sucks. Bonus points for Barracuda.

Well the combat's not as good as what you'll find in FEAR, but I can see the whole "enemies on the ceiling" concept being sweet further into the game. As for the storytelling -- I think it's much, much better than in HL2. HL2's conversations were just... boring... I like Prey's character analysis and I really think that this is the direction that FPS games need to take in order to be more effective with their storytelling.

I thought the game was pretty good, the best moment for me was the tiny planet. i'd like to see some more open areas and diverse environments though. if the game varies in this way then i'm sold. I definitely enjoyed that small demo more than all of doom 3.
It's definitely original, which is pretty uncommon for games these days, I'll probably play through the demo again, but it definitely has the doom 3 "feel" to it so far which isn't a good thing IMO.
I HOPE, the entire game doesn't revolve around metal, or fleshy corridors!

My Babbages (which coinsides with a gamestop on the otherside of the mall, and an EB outside the mall) is still called Babbages, and one of the employees recentely told me none of the stores were going to close, so maybe they're just keeping the name so they don't have the same store twice in the mall.

I have played it and it's just another run of the mill game to me. Sure the graphics are great, sure the weapons are new and interesting, and sure it runs smooth, but it's one of the lamest storylines I've ever heard/seen. A native American using a magical/futuristic bow and arrow and other highly advanced weaponry to kill aliens and save the world? To me it's just another weak story combined with good graphics and a run n' gun gameplay.
Ledhed
06-28-2006, 09:50 PM
If you can't see that the story is meant to be tongue-in-cheek and ridiculous from the moment the aliens abduct you, then yes, this game is not meant for you. That is, those of you without a sense of humor.

Well if you think there is more to a shooting game than just bigger and badder guns and better graphics, then this game is not meant for you. That is, those of you who jump on the bandwagon about the same type of game that has been released during the 11 years of this game's development.

Quoting myself from a thread I started. I guess I was too blind to see this thread :-)
OK, so I know that Prey basically looks like a mindless shooter with the same drab, overly gross art as Doom 3, but I have to say that I really enjoyed the demo. Actually, I am amazed with how much I enjoyed it.
Even long after I had run through it, I was still looking back and thinking "wow, <this or that> was really cool!" I wouldn't call it particularly innovative, but I would say that it is pretty creative. I'm not sure if it is 3D Realms' influence, or purely Human Head, but all the little touches make it great. If it is the doing of 3D Realms, then I have to draw the parallel to Duke Nukem 3D. Quirky weapons like the shrink gun totally remind me of little things like the sniper scope on the first gun. It may be nothing more than a clever animation, but the first time I used it I exclaimed "holy shit!" then proceeded to switch back and forth over and over again yelling at my little brother, "check this out!". Then you have all the funny comments from the character as well as the toilet interaction. I really hope the final version plays up the puzzle solving elements.
I couldn't care less about running around shooting guys, but exploring the environments, walking on gravity paths, and solving puzzles like the one where you send your body on the conveyor while in spirit mode
make the game stand out IMO. Anyway, it's not like I have never seen things like this in a game before, but I do think that they have presented them in a cool way, and i am really looking forward to playing through it.

Well if you think there is more to a shooting game than just bigger and badder guns and better graphics, then this game is not meant for you.
Comedy anybody? Crazy ass portals? Scare factors? Decent stories?
Seems to me like somebody is just a FPS hater.
That is, those of you who jump on the bandwagon about the same type of game that has been released during the 11 years of this game's development.
This game hasn't been in development for 11 years.
The original Prey was first announced in 1995 and put on indefinite hold in 1999. In 2001, 3D Realms bought the Prey licence back from Infogrames and handed development duties down to Human Head Studios.
So while the idea of Prey is 11 years old, the current edition that is going to retail later this month is only 4-5 years old.

FPS games are about intense action and fun gameplay and MULTIPLAYER. I love a good story but that's secondary. Halo and Halo 2 are arguably the best console FPS games out there, and not because of their stories. Portals = new concept. Wallwalking = new concept. Spirit walking = new concept. Death walking = new concept. There are more new ideas in this game than perhaps any FPS I've seen or played in a long time. If they're well executed, I think it will be very hard to disregard this game as just another run of the mill FPS. I could be wrong, and I admit I haven't played the demo yet, but it seems to me that your arguments - even if true - do not do anything to take away from the potential of the game.
Good or bad, I'm excited that something unique is being attempted.

Seems to me like somebody is just a FPS hater. Oh really? I guess I should return over half my collection of games now that I realize that not liking Prey means not liking every single FPS  Sounds to me like that was a bad conclusion.

So while the idea of Prey is 11 years old, the current edition that is going to retail later this month is only 4-5 years old. You know what that whole argument boils down to? The game - whether it be the idea, the graphics, the story, the levels, w/e - has been in development for 11 years.

That's great that you think Halo 1 and 2 are great games, but I don't. You know why? I think you do because you already said it: dumb stories. I'm glad that both you guys and everyone else who is jumping for joy about Prey are willing to throw down money for this game, but I'm not. It's also fun to read these arguments because they accomplish nothing. You're trying to tell me my opinion is wrong and even saying I hate FPS because I don't enjoy this game? What is that? If I don't like the game, get over yourself, I'm not going to stand in the way of you enjoying the game. I'm sorry if I don't bite on every "brand new FPS" that is released, because I see the same shit over and over just added with portals and wallwalking!!!
Bottomline: If you don't like my opinion, that's nice, but don't tell me it's wrong. By you liking a game that I happen to not like does not make it a good game, because it's all opinion. I never said anyone was ignorant for liking this game, all I said is that I am glad I am not wanting this game so I wouldn't be joining the ranks of whiners complaining about no demo and who will probably complaining after they get the game.

I didn't state that your opinion is wrong. Nor will I. It's an opinion, and therefore can not be. I'm glad to hear that you're not a big fan of the Halo games as well, because that gives me another idea of your game tastes. Obviously they're not the same as mine - or most of the other people who are anticipating this game. I am curious though, what FPS games are you a big fan of? I would love an FPS with the production values of Halo and the story of detail of KOTOR something along those lines, but I can't think of one I've ever played...

I am curious though, what FPS games are you a big fan of? Well like many have said, it's hard to find a game with a pretty cool/awesome storyline, so many times I have to settle with just the top FPS to get my shooting fix. Tried Halo and Halo 2 and like many people, just went to multiplayer after a while because the single player got boring. As of late, my favorite shooter has been Far Cry: Instincts Predator because the story keeps me playing for hours and hours, plus it always keeps me on the edge of my seat.
I was going to pick up FarCry, mostly for a multiplayer fix, but this seems to be getting a lot of praise and I think I'll hold off for this.Even though I just said that I think the game is amazing, the online community is just dead for it. The only games you'll find are kids with crappy custom maps and horrible servers, it's quite sad. You'd be better off with Prey if you are looking for people to play with.

Are we playing the same game?
The graphics are late xbox at best, it's just slightly better than Doom 3 and Riddick. The main character annoys the hell out of me (hey guy, we get it - you have no clue what's going on - shut up now), the enemies barely react when shot at other than a simple flinch (I love how the guy just kinda flinches after I hit him in the head with a wrench), the "interactive environment" consists of an on-screen cursor playing video poker and the ability to spin a barstool and interactive computer screens similar to Doom 3. The voicework of the main character is flat ("oh... my... god".. in a sarcastic tone). The guns look cool (but are more or less the same guns in every other game), the portals are pretty mindfuck and the wall walking is alright, but this thing screams Doom 3 with different enemies, slightly better graphics and a gimmick that leaves the game pretty dull.
And what part scared the shit out of you? The only thing scary here is that the walls are glossy and tend to make shit sounds when an alien pops out. If this scares you, please, steer way clear of Fatal Frame and Silent Hill.
I'll give it a rent, I guess, but there's no way i'll get this at launch.

I agree with the wrench thing. I wish HHS would have paid attention to Condemned. They got melee weapons down perfect.
Interactive environment is being able to actually change channels on the tv, using the soap dispenser on the wall, flipping the lid to the toilet and a whole bunch of other shit reacting the way you would expect it to when you interact with it. And there is more then video poker there is also video slots, jukebox (when didn't work in the demo  ) and a working Pac Man sim.
Guess I should have mentioned I scare easily in games. Doom III freaked me out and Fatal Frame scarred me for life. :D

Yea 3drealms games always had a little odd-ball interactivity that was their trade mark. I'd be sad if this game was 100% serious, and left out all the crap I loved from like Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior. You need just a little humor in there.Anyway. I LOVE the single player portion, the mp, is "eh", but I can live with it. It's more like playing a late 90's FPS than anything, fun, but not what I pre-ordered the game for. Fair enough. What's a little ironic is that I bailed on Far Cry Instincts: Predator near the end of the first campaign. I thought the story was predictable and lame, and while I really liked the early steathy forest levels, I kinda felt that it pretty much went down hill from the beginning and ended up being exactly the "run of the mill" type shooter you feel Prey is. All's cool though. Different strokes...
I'm DL'ing now. I'll be on to try a little mp later. I kinda feel that with most FPS games, a great campaign is a bonus. If the mp knocks it out of the park, the game's a winner. Halo 2 is a great example of that. I enjoyed the campaign, but it's by no means the reason it stayed in my xbox for nearly a year....

I like it, but I'm not blown away either. It's solid and fun. I enjoyed Doom 3, and I think this will be a little better in terms of variety. I can see a lot of potential in it, and I hope the vehicle sequences and puzzles will be a lot of fun. I like having to search the environment and pay attention to the surroundings a little more than the typical FPS. Overall gameplay is tight. Graphics are pretty good, but I'm a lot more impressed with the artistic style and detail than the graphics themselves. Human character models aren't the greatest. Melee definitely could've taken a chapter from Condemned. The wrench feels a little useless. IGN's remarks do state that the graphics and puzzle element become more impressive as the game progresses.
Multi-player is fun and dissorienting with the wall walking and spirit walking adding some fun twists to the genre. I got a little lag in the games I played, and couldn't connect most of the time I tried. I hope this is a demo bug that doesn't show up in the final version.
I'd probably agree with a 7 score for the demo. 7.5 maybe... I'm still hoping for more like an 8.5 from the overall package. I'll be keeping my pre-order and looking forward to it.

Having played the PC demo a lot I was very surprised to see how much different the 360 version looked. Also there were less options. I was playing in the same room as the kids (same as when the PC demo came out) so I chose to turn off all the bad language on the PC demo, well that option was not on the 360 version.
Other than that though the game felt different than the PC version, I am not just a hyper huge FPS fan on PC, I have played a load of them but I would opt for a 360 version before the PC in most cases. Here though with the differences I think I might be getting this on PC. I would rather have it on the 360 though due to achievement points and 5.1 system and large TV.

Multiplayer is better than I expected, but it seems to lag half the time. Still, everyone running around on walls and ceilings is fun.

I am personally sick of this game engine. It only looked good in Doom 3. Impressive, however, is the level of presentation. I could turn on the hot and cold water in the bathroom? Awesome. I also think the portals and wall-and-ceiling-walking add a whole new level of strategy. It's too bad the characters in multiplayer move too fast.

Best part of the game - the jukebox in the bar. I couldn't care less about Ted Nugent, but that album cover cracks me up every time.

I thought it was going to take forever being I havent at the best of luck downloading demos. But mine took about 5-8 minutes. So for once no problems for me.
