Wow , I didn't expect to be able to do this.

Opera Software, a world leader in Web browser technology, today announced that Nintendo's much anticipated new generation game console, Wii, will use the Opera browser.

Users of the Wii console will browse the Internet using their consoles. Navigating via the innovative new Wii Remote controller, users can visit Web sites in between gaming sessions.

This is kind of old. I'm surprised that you found out now.

I knew about the DS browser .
I never heard anything about being able to browse with the Revolution [Wii].

When Iwata announced it at the nintendo press conference no one even flinched because you cant understand a damn thing he's saying. I remember thinking did he say that? And looking around and no one reacted.

It will be a nice addition. It won't be such a hassle like the dreamcast where you have to put in a seperate disc, its just right there on the console.

Oh joy, web browsing on NTSC/PAL displays.

I'd suspect they originally got Opera to produce this as infrastructure for the display and interactive components of their online services such as the sales end of the Virtual Console. From there it wasn't a big deal to allow full browsing. But this will be a miserable excuse for a web browser in terms of the display limitations. You cannot even properly call this equivalent to plain old 640x480 VGA due to the interlacing. It will be more full featured than the Dreamcast browser but hardly any better. On top of the display issue there is the lack of a hard drive for caching. You do NOT want to use the flash memory for this purpose as the limited write cycles of flash can become a problem under such use.

i agree that this isn't superfantastic, but it might be nice for a quick email check or a looking up one code, faq or whatever online.

Spend some time with an NTSC web browser, even with a real keyboard. You'll soon be cured.

I used the Dreamcast browser pretty often , I guess I need to be "cured" .

Apparently it's masochism that needs to be treated. Or acute visual impairment.

How will text input be handled? I suppose with the D-Pad... it'd be hilarious to try to do it with the Wiimote.

I'd imagine that, without a keyboard, you'd bring up an on-screen keyboard and point to the letters with the remote. It could work a little better with a built-in guessing system like a cell phone, but yeah it would be annoying.

The pics of the Wii I saw showed 2 USB ports on the back .

I suspect we'll see both an onscreen keyboard option for use with the Wii-mote, as well as a third party USB keyboard (hell, maybe it'll be able to use current market PC USB keyboards) or even a first-party peripheral.

If they did it for GameCube (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=75&products_id=2518), which had almost no software to justify it, they'll certainly do it for Wii.
